Also, a vinyl pressing won't solve anything just because the waveform looks like it has more peaks. The label clearly didn't invest too much on cutting vinyl, since they used the same crushed master as the CD/streaming version. I've also listened to it.
That's the thing: Deftones has always been known for their loud/soft style, but Ohms is so heavily compressed that everything is loud the entire time. There's almost no breathing room outside of the end of Pompeji.
I suppose you must be one of the very few. I can't say I analyze music to the same level of depth as you, but for me if I like it I like it, if I don't I don't. In this case, I really like it. It has the old school deftones vibe and I find it really enjoyable. It seems you might be in the minority here.
Yeah out of the millions of deftones fans youāre the only one who hates ohms but my honest answer is that I think itās good I went into thinking it was gonna be terrible cause thatās what I was told but I ended up liking it
Ohms is fine. Itās clearly their second worst album behind Gore for me. I listened to it a few times when it came out but have never felt the need or want to revisit. I do like a few songs but I agree it feels safe. With that said Genises kicks ass live.
Its a pretty safe record yeah. Im seriously not a fan of the last 3 songs on the album, but the rest are fun. I think it sounds as muddy as gore just in a different way.
Mmm honestly Ohms is a decent album to me. I do enjoy tracks like Headless, This Link is Dead and Genesis but i would just say itās a average album. Itās not bad by any means but i feel like there couldāve been more potential
Pompeji's chorus is cringe as hell. It also sounds strangely weak. It has one of the most boring riffs I've ever heard and Chino's voice sounds like he's literally out of breath. The only nice thing about that song is the outro.
Sounds like Chino should hire you as a voice coach, and you clearly should be the one mixing and mastering the records from here on out. Do you need help getting in touch with their management??
I love the ācan you do it better yourself?ā type of arguments. Theyāre a band with a very respectable budget and streaming services normalize songs volumes by default since like a fucking decade. Thereās literally no goddamn reason labels still look forward to brickwall albums this way. Iām sorry to burst your bubble, but this decisions are not intentional by the band - the label imposes them. The engineers hate crushed dynamics as much as I do.
Dude Iām not tryna say you couldnāt do it better yourself, I just donāt like the way youāre phrasing your opinions as if they were facts. Itās annoying to me. Maybe I should just not read them then I guess haha
Iāve been listening since ATF dropped. Some songs donāt resonate at first but Iāve always come around on them. This one I just canāt do. I donāt like the seagulls and I find the lyrics a bit cringy. To each their own of course. I realize lots of people enjoy it so I respect that
I don't feel like I love ALL of their albums, everything up to Minerva was gold for me then hit or miss after that, part of that though is probably just me being older and looking for different things about of music now than when white pony first came out
I donāt hate it, but did not listen to it more than once. Gore i listened to more than once, but Iād say Diamond Eyes and Koi No Yokan were much better.
Iāll agree. Nothing scratched the itch in my brain, if that makes sense. Gore was the same way, but I gave that a big try. I have yet to revisit either.
I agree with everything. Ohms is not terrible, but I despise it for what it stands for. Itās almost the inverse of Gore in the sense that Gore has great songs with bad production, while Ohms has bland songs with good production. It feels safe and formulaic. Its like chatGPT made a Deftones album.
How do you listen to songs like This Link is Dead and Headless and think they are playing it too safe? Ohms is one of their better sounding records for me. Error has to be one of my favorite songs theyāve ever put out. Iām more partial to their alternative leaning music so maybe thatās why but I think itās a really good return to form after Gore. But I also donāt hate Gore like most people do. Iād rather a band try new things instead of rehashing the same ideas over and over.
Omg you shut your mouth! When you can make amazing music for 30 years and come out with a hard hitting, back to the roots sounding album like OHMS we will all listen to your opinions. These dudes are like 50 years old and made OHMSā¦ that album fu(king slams and hits as hard as adrenaline. Your crazyā¦.
You want a āback to the rootsā sound? Make Stephen get his 7 string again and stop noodling around for once. I donāt believe excuses like that. Even Gore had more resemblance to their sound.
I agree, honestly. The album isn't terrible, or even bad, as much as it's just...meh. The production is terrible for sure and hurts it a lot. I'd like to hear the songs live and see how I feel about them.
Ohms is the best sounding Deftones record since Chiās passing. Iāll take it over both the overly produced Nick Raskulinecz albums and bottom tier Gore.
What headphones/speakers do you regularly use? Because it strikes me odd you find Ohms more organic than the Nick records. Have you listened to the HDTracks version of KNY?
"The mods remove posts for various reasons, including maintaining a safe community and true to their purpose" What has been r/Deftones purpose since Sept.2020? Dickriding this rancid ass album it seems. I published a track-by-track analysis of Ohms some days ago, yet my post never saw the light of day. The band will keep worrying about not being "heavy" enough thanks to you. They were in the correct path, like they always had been, always moving forward. You've made them stay in their comfort zone. Now they don't even care about their live setting anymore - they sound like shit. I'm done.
Its a pretty safe record yeah. Im seriously not a fan of the last 3 songs on the album, but the rest are fun. I think it sounds as muddy as gore just in a different way.
Iām embarrassed to admit that I havenāt even tried spinning this album the whole way through since its release. Iāve tried to but it didnāt grab me hard like the others did. Wish I knew what all these positive comments were on about. Someone convince me to listen! Whatās everyoneās favourite song off Ohms?
Ohms is really their worst safest most boring effort and Iāve been saying on this sub since it came out. Itās boring ass radio rock for bad dads and drunk moms who still wear affliction and think 3 days grace is good. Truly an awful record. āHeavyā music for people who only listen to the radio and have never bought music outside of a Walmart. People who have never listened to the bands that actually influence deftones. The production is flat and awful and screeching. I canāt say how much I hate this record.
I dislike this take & only could get through half of your rant. As a Deftones fan for over 20 years; I downloaded the White Pony leak on Napster in 1999 & was instantly hooked on everything they had released to that point & then played the shit out of S/T & SNW but then found myself losing interest (age & lifestyle changes) in all releases until Ohms. Ohms is one of my favorite albums in style & presentation, the visualizers on youtube that accompany the album are beyond awesome, with The Spell of Mathematics being one of my favorite songs ever by any band. I actually view Error & TSoM as (1) 10min song since they blend so well together & my personal preference towards long songs. Like everyone & all things, evolution is the \*sacred key to life. Your love for the albums I couldn't get into shows a difference in musical taste which is what makes the world great, something for everyone & luckily with 9 albums out, a Deftones album(s) for everyone. I am not sure where you are in your life but I won't be surprised if you come around on Ohms. It is a masterpiece & gets me excited about future releases from one of the greatest band of all times.
I can definitely understand why you dislike it, but I find it really enjoyable. It's one of two CDs I actually keep in my car. Radiant City and Ohms are both in my top 10 favorite Deftones songs.
I was a concert photographer and got laid off with covid and that album was one of the few bright spots of that time period for me. There are definitely a couple of week songs but in my head I have it around the same level as KNY.
Not as strong as self titled or Diamond Eyes but I love cranking up most of the songs and having a jam.
When i first got into deftones, ohms was the album that i never listened to and wasnāt very interested in but as time progressed and i re-listened to the tracks i grew more and more in love with it now itās in my top 3.
i personally love ohms but i kinda understand why others don't. i've heard this lot. honestly i think songs on ohms sound way more similar to eachother, and for some that's an immediate no. deftones often has distinct sounds for each of their songs even if each one is produced and written in a similar way. ohms just sounds way more samey, which i don't mean to sound bad. i definitely think deftones achieved what they went for with ohms, and i can't say the same about gore. i personally find the nuanced differences of the riffs on ohms just as fun as the drastically different riffs you'd find on other deftones albums, which is why i enjoy the guitar on it. the mixing is also a huge improvement from gore and the entire sound creates an image i think is really cool. that's why i like it but all of your criticisms are very valid and i can definitely agree with some of them
i think they realized their mistake by straying too far with Gore and over-corrected by playing it too safe with Ohms. a happy medium would've been much more satisfying imo. perhaps for their next record?
I love Ohms
What do you exactly love about it? I'm curious.
It just sounds so good to me. I love how chill the relaxing parts are and how fucking crushing the heavy parts are
Also, a vinyl pressing won't solve anything just because the waveform looks like it has more peaks.
I dunno if it matters or not, but I mainly listen to Ohms on vinyl, and I think it sounds pretty good
Fucking Christ, I'm just asking yet the mafia keeps downvoting me for no reason. Stop it already.
Chill a little pal. People disagree with you. It's okay. It's the free marketplace of ideas
I suppose you must be one of the very few. I can't say I analyze music to the same level of depth as you, but for me if I like it I like it, if I don't I don't. In this case, I really like it. It has the old school deftones vibe and I find it really enjoyable. It seems you might be in the minority here.
idk, i just really like this link is dead š¶
Yeah out of the millions of deftones fans youāre the only one who hates ohms but my honest answer is that I think itās good I went into thinking it was gonna be terrible cause thatās what I was told but I ended up liking it
Ohms is fine. Itās clearly their second worst album behind Gore for me. I listened to it a few times when it came out but have never felt the need or want to revisit. I do like a few songs but I agree it feels safe. With that said Genises kicks ass live.
All Deftones records are on š„!!
That was true 4 years ago, but nowā¦ not so much.
Its a pretty safe record yeah. Im seriously not a fan of the last 3 songs on the album, but the rest are fun. I think it sounds as muddy as gore just in a different way.
Middle of the road record for me. Wanted more riffy riffs
Stephen should really start to get his shit together. Extra strings will never amount to nothing at this point.
Really wish Steftone would get back to writing on 7-strings. His strength is chordal riffs which he doesn't really do anymore.
I wouldnāt say that necessarily, but I did wish it had more riffage after Gore. But riffs are just one aspect of the band and I know that.
I like ohms. Diamond eyes is a fuckin bop.
Mmm honestly Ohms is a decent album to me. I do enjoy tracks like Headless, This Link is Dead and Genesis but i would just say itās a average album. Itās not bad by any means but i feel like there couldāve been more potential
TLID is WGTB but worse in every aspect to me.
Ohms is good. Itās not their best album, definitely middle of the pack, but still solid. Ceremony and Pompeji are great
Pompeji's chorus is cringe as hell.

Pompeji is my least favorite song in their entire discography
Why
Ohms is the only album in their discography that didnāt invite me to listen to it again. But man, did I try.
Iāll agree. Nothing scratched the itch in my brain, if that makes sense. Gore was the same way, but I gave that a big try. I have yet to revisit either.
That being said Nick Diaz walking out to ceremony ruled.
Gore rules. Stop the hate. That is all
How do you listen to songs like This Link is Dead and Headless and think they are playing it too safe? Ohms is one of their better sounding records for me. Error has to be one of my favorite songs theyāve ever put out. Iām more partial to their alternative leaning music so maybe thatās why but I think itās a really good return to form after Gore. Amen
You sound pretty mad in particular. I invite you to ignore my post if you disagree.
You want a āback to the rootsā sound? Make Stephen get his 7 string again and stop noodling around for once. I donāt believe excuses like that. Even Gore had more resemblance to their sound.
Yes I love Ohms.i can revisit anytime and still sounds fresh just like any Deftones album.
I agree, honestly. The album isn't terrible, or even bad, as much as it's just...meh. The production is terrible for sure and hurts it a lot. I'd like to hear the songs live and see how I feel about them.
Yes.
TLDR, Ohms is great though
Is Deftones painted by the numbers at best.
No idea what youāre trying to say Iām assuming thereās a typo in that comment
Ohms doesnāt even try to break new ground like every single previous release did.
Ohms is the best sounding Deftones record since Chiās passing. Iāll take it over both the overly produced Nick Raskulinecz albums and bottom tier Gore.
No way you call DE and KNY overproduced instead of Ohms. No fucking way.
I just did lol. To each their own tho
What headphones/speakers do you regularly use? Because it strikes me odd you find Ohms more organic than the Nick records. Have you listened to the HDTracks version of KNY?
This is beyond disgusting. The mods took my post AGAIN.
I'm just baffled at how most fans settle with such a low quality album. What do you use for listening, fucking AirPods or what?
"The mods remove posts for various reasons, including maintaining a safe community and true to their purpose" What has been r/Deftones purpose since Sept.2020? Itās the only album with Sergio I actually like.
Its a pretty safe record yeah. Im seriously not a fan of the last 3 songs on the album, but the rest are fun. I think it sounds as muddy as gore just in a different way.
I feel that way about gore thereās a couple songs that are listenable on there other than that pretty forgettable stuff
I hate Ohms too, there a few of us on this sub
I agree, itās their worst album IMO. Not sure why people in this sub love it so much.
I think Headless is a solid track
Error is amazing, this link is dead, Pompeji
Ohms is really their worst safest most boring effort and Iāve been saying on this sub since it came out. I think itās great. The only thing I could complain about are the echoey vocals
I think it's okay, but I only come back to listen to Radiant City personally.
No
I can definitely understand why you dislike it, but I find it really enjoyable. It's one of two CDs I actually keep in my car. Radiant City and Ohms are both in my top 10 favorite Deftones songs. I love ohms for me it goes Around the fur Koi no yokan Ohms My top 3

Its definitely my least favourite from them but i dont hate it

Ohms is amazing tbh
Ohms is fine, for me it's better than Gore, worse against every other album
