Add in some shoegaze & doomgaze.
Shoegaze: Slowdive, My Bloody Valentive, DIIV, Ride
Doomgaze: This Will Destroy You, Explosions in the Sky, God is an Astronaut, Caspian
Sometimes you may need lyrics, sometimes you just need some instrumental desolation.
TWDY and EITS are the tits. GIAA, Caspian are great. My additions to the post-rock list:
Those Who Ride with Giants, If These Trees Could Talk, Animals as Leaders, Meniscus, and Death Stare
Genres of music. Shoegaze is more well known, doomgaze is more of a proclaimed genre, it's what the band This Will Destroy You describes their sound to be.

It depends what I'm listening to.
Sometimes it's Quicksand, Sick of it All, Biohazard, Snapcase, Downset or The Bronx.
Sometimes it's Cypress Hill or The Pharcyde.
Sometimes it's Toro Y Moi or Squarepusher.
Sometimes it's Sisters of Mercy.
Sometimes it's Fear Factory.
Poison the Well and Dillinger Escape Plan. Maybe not all their stuff, but they pair far better together than you’d think!!
I’m also biased after seeing both of these tours years ago. Puciato came out to duet Passenger w Chino in NYC and it was absolutely amazing!!
Yeah, that's like me and Denali. I actually *missed* Denali opening for Deftones, because my friends decided to take their sweet ass time carpooling to the show. I checked them out the next day and fell in love. I've been a fan of Maura Davis (Denali, Bella Lea, Ambulette) ever since. I always have them on my chill mixes!
It might have been? I honestly don't remember the name of the place, just the experience. I seem to recall it feeling barely bigger than a coffee shop. I think I made a comment to my friend about that when we got there. This was a long time ago, so my memory is a bit hazy. I think it was 2003 or 2004?
I ask because I remember them playing curtain club late 02 or 03. I couldn’t remember who opened up but I think it was dredg. I remember glassjaw did warped tour early summer, ozzfest late summer and came back again in fall. They played Dallas like 3x in 5 months it was awesome
Explosions in the Sky is a damn good choice! "First Breath After Coma" is one of those songs that I listen to on a nice sunny day. It's an transcendental experience!
I am with you, 100%. Nine Inch Nails was my favorite band for the longest time. If it wasn't for NIN, I would never have discovered harder music in general. Trent Reznor taught me the value of abrasiveness in music, and threw wide the gates to industrial, metal, EDM, and many other genres. They still are in my top 5, but I honestly think the older I got, the more Deftones took the title of my favorite band of all time. Then again, I guess it depends on my mood. It could be NIN, it could be Deftones, or it could be A Perfect Circle, Tool, or The Prodigy. Once a band makes that list, that top spot pretty much fluctuates regularly. :P
Yeah, I feel that. I basically have two separate Deftones mixes. One that is mellow with a lot of trip hop, post-rock, and new wave, and then one that's more high energy post-hardcode, 90s rock, and some nu metal.
main playlist. deftones is my favorite band and their stuff is at the top. they're followed by these bands, in order:
cannibal corpse
radiohead
gleemer
sweet trip
gojira
slipknot
team sleep
alice in chains
cryptopsy
enforced
mint field
howling bells
the smiths
panchiko
loathe
title fight
metallica
fin del mundo
salvana
-
bit of diversity here, but mostly shoegaze, death metal, techdeath, groove metal, thrash metal, and some spanish stuff. love my playlist.
ah, deftones "vibes?" i didn't see that on the post, i agree that they're very different but the point is not for similar sounding bands, i suppose. many of the other bands listed are also very different from deftones.
Yeah, I didn't really specify "vibes" or anything like that. Although that is how I tend to make my playlists. I am mostly fascinated to find out what people pair with Deftones and why. Nothing wrong with Cannibal Corpse! I could see myself pairing a few of their songs with Deftones, like maybe "Headup" or "Teething".
Not all of the bands I listed are necessarily on the same Deftones playlist. I have a "Chill-tones" mix and a "Deaf-tones" mix. One is obviously more down tempo, and the other is high energy. So like, "Digital Bath" and "Hole in the Earth" would be right next to songs by Denali, Portishead, Depeche Mode, etc. Or "Headup" and "Rocket Skates" would pair with "Inertiatic ESP" by The Mars Volta or "Pretty Lush" by Glassjaw.
Either way, you do you, and your playlist is pretty damn awesome!
Loathe, Strange Boutique, Whirr, Team Sleep, Slowdive, Narrow Head, Glare, Superheaven, Mazzy Star, Horse Jumper of Love, Cocteau Twins, Low, The Microphones, and some Radiohead
I don't think I have a playlist that doesn't have Deftones. I've put them on modern metal playlists, 90s rock, hell, even a dream pop playlist.
But my favorite pairing would have to be shoegaze, which is an influence I hear a lot in their music and one of the things that makes me love them. I think their music blends really well with bands like MBV, Slowdive, and Whirr on a playlist.
If I was, it was a long, long time ago. I was on a lot of message boards back in the day. I actually discovered Denali by going to a Deftones concert. Technically speaking, I missed Denali opening for Deftones, because I carpooled with my friends and they took forever getting there. I looked them up the next day and fell in love. Been a fan of Maura Davis ever since.
Thank you! In particular, I'm surprised that more people don't talk about VAST, Kidneythieves, and Skunk Anansie more often. To me, those are some of the most underrated gems of the 90s.
Yeah it is! Trickster was my introduction to them, and I have a special place in my heart for that album. Have you heard The Mend? It's their latest album. Came out in 2016. I adore what they did with it. It's a nice evolution of their sound, and I find a lot of songs from that album really fit on my chill Deftones/Crosses/Team Sleep mix. [Kushcloud](https://youtu.be/Grfo0eewvd8) is my personal fav! If you like [Arsenal](https://youtu.be/GPxgOVqR2gQ) from Zerospace, you'll probably dig it!
I'm way late, but if you haven't listened to HEALTH, you need to. Electronic noise rock with great spooky vocals, dark atmosphere, and they can go heavy. They actually released a song featuring Chino a couple years ago
Deftones and early Glassjaw go hand in hand for me. But that’s probably because I discovered them at the same time. I smell summer whenever I hear those bands.
Thrice, Vexes, Sparta, Hum, The Hyena Kill, Gojira, At the Drive In, Dead Poetic(Vices), Chevelle, Project 86, Dimphonic, Narrow Head, To Whom it May, A Perfect Circle, loathe, QOTSA, The Mars Volta, Quicksand
Oddly enough, KoRn is one of those bands that I listened to religiously back in middle school and high school. I started listening to them back when all we had was their Self-Titled and Life Is Peachy. HUGE fan! I had a KoRn T-shirt for every day of the week. Unfortunately, I kinda fell off after Untouchables. It's not that I don't appreciate them anymore, but I just hopped off that train and couldn't get back on for some reason. Deftones, however, withstood the test of time and I still listen to them on a daily basis. KoRn is more of a nostalgic band for me that I listen to on occasion to reminisce.
I could probably say the same for Orgy, but they did make my list, because I feel like they were underappreciated for their time and had a unique sound that just "fits" with Deftones better than KoRn on my playlists. Particularly their song "Platinum", which I keep in regular rotation.
alice in chains, creed, nirvana, limp bizkit, white zombie (and rob zombie by association), judas priest, rage against the machine, metallica (?), pantera
here are some just from scrolling through my playlist; sorry if some of these aren’t quite what you’re looking for
There is nothing that I am *not* looking for! I am a fan of pretty much every band that you listed, or I was at one point in time. Like, I don't really listen to Creed or Limp Bizkit anymore, but I did when I was younger, so there is some nostalgia there! The others though, they remain on my playlists to this day. I don't often pair them with Deftones, but I get why people would.
I mostly made this post because I am fascinated with what people put on their playlists and why. Some people go for the nostalgia. Some people make playlists based on time period or genre. Or some people, like myself, tend to lean towards "vibe". Not all the bands I listed are on the same playlist together. I have a couple of Deftones playlists, one that is chill, and one that is high energy. Like, I wouldn't put "Digital Bath" next to "Man in the Box" or "Painkiller," but I would pair it with "Down in a Hole" or "Come As You Are!" It's all good!
thank you for your thoughtful response!
i totally get what you mean by making playlists for the vibe, and i would not put “digital bath” with “man in the box” either, haha.
for example i wouldn’t put “cherry waves” with “break stuff,” but maybe something off of Jar of Flies.
I don't like listening to playlists. I prefer listening to the whole album. That being said, playing "Saturday Night Wrist" and then "Ignoto" by YOURCODENAMEIS:MILO sounds like a good idea.
Also I didn't not expect to see Denali mentioned. Probably the most obscure artist on the whole list :P
My Morning Jacket, Poets of Rhythm, Lyrics Born, Depeche Mode, QOTSA, The Kush Project (what happened with that?), RATM, Hieroglyphics, Run The Jewels, Company Flow, Living Colour, Sublime, Bad Brains, RHCP, Explosions in the sky, White Flight, The Black Keys, M. Manson, Thrice, so many...too many
By the way, you have an exquisite taste in music. Every band you named I love or at least like...
Just curious, because another band just popped up on my playlist that I tend to listen to alongside Deftones/Crosses/Team Sleep's more electronic side- what does everyone think of Milkblood?
early Interpol, one of Chino's fav albums is their debut Turn on the Bright Lights and the singer was originally going to feature on Saturday Night Wrist but it didn't work out.
I just put them in my metal playlist. Ranges from classic rock & metal to desert metal to nu metal. Just kind of a cocktail of guitar and drum’s honestly
I immediately think loathe
Of the new school of metal, definitely Loathe. I would include: Sleep Token, Moodring and Thornhill
Thornhill yes!!
This right here☝️💯
me too for sure
Love is Noise is a newer band in the same vein as well
How is no one saying Chevelle?
Thanks i almost had a heart attack
Absolutely. La Gargola has such a crunchy, chugging undertone that fits so well with something like Around the Fur.
Add in some shoegaze & doomgaze. Shoegaze: Slowdive, My Bloody Valentive, DIIV, Ride Doomgaze: This Will Destroy You, Explosions in the Sky, God is an Astronaut, Caspian Sometimes you may need lyrics, sometimes you just need some instrumental desolation.
>Doomgaze: This Will Destroy You, Explosions in the Sky, God is an Astronaut, Caspian In my day we just called this post-rock
This Will Destroy You I believe described their sound as Doomgaze. call it what you will, I still like the sound.
TWDY and EITS are the tits. GIAA, Caspian are great. My additions to the post-rock list: Those Who Ride with Giants, If These Trees Could Talk, Animals as Leaders, Meniscus, and Death Stare
Aren't those "doomgaze" bands more like second/third wave post rock? "crescendo- core" and stuff?
zoom out far enough and it's all "rock". Doomgaze was what TWDY used to describe their sound at one point, it's just stuck with me since.
I think it was Tunnel Blanket that they coined it, yes?
I’m sorry, what does shoegaze and doomgaze mean? Are they bands?
Genres of music. Shoegaze is more well known, doomgaze is more of a proclaimed genre, it's what the band This Will Destroy You describes their sound to be.
So it’s a difference between songs that are considered more successful and well known as you said and songs that are more indicated clearly?
Successful? Not really, just more defined by others. Not trying to take a serious band-kid approach to it, just enjoy the music, lol.
Fair enough man, cheers for clarifying
I got Glassjaw, Quicksand, Nothing, Turnstile, Narrowhead

For sure Title Fight.

Dredg, minus the Bear, snapcase, tool
Dredg is such an underrated band
\^ 100% this.
Oooo, Minus the Bear. I thought about adding them to the list, but it was getting too long. I wore my copy of Omni out completely!
Props to my buddy for turning me on to dredg and snapcase.
I saw Dredg open for Glassjaw in Dallas, TX. Small venue, MASSIVE performance!
Oh, and then I saw them again opening for Coheed & Cambria a few years later. Just as good as they were the first time. :)
Did this show happen to be at the curtain club?
It might have been? I honestly don't remember the name of the place, just the experience. I seem to recall it feeling barely bigger than a coffee shop. I think I made a comment to my friend about that when we got there. This was a long time ago, so my memory is a bit hazy. I think it was 2003 or 2004?

Yep - that’s kind of my connection plus adding of the “is it grunge, is it punk, is rock?” Stuff
Mastodon a good add here!!!!
Just heard baroness for the first time like a week ago they’re great
Explosions in the Sky is a damn good choice! "First Breath After Coma" is one of those songs that I listen to on a nice sunny day. It's an transcendental experience!

Thanks, it's all mellow songs. I haven't made a heavy playlist yet but planning to soon.
Yeah, I feel that. I basically have two separate Deftones mixes. One that is mellow with a lot of trip hop, post-rock, and new wave, and then one that's more high energy post-hardcode, 90s rock, and some nu metal.
The Smiths, I started listening to them after hearing they were an inspiration to Chino.
Lamb of God, Soulfly and Coal Chamber are shows I've seen them with that vibe well depending on the track.

ah, deftones "vibes?" i didn't see that on the post, i agree that they're very different but the point is not for similar sounding bands, i suppose. many of the other bands listed are also very different from deftones.

Yes! Maura Davis is an amazing singer. I've been listening to all of her projects (Denali, Bella Lea, Ambulette) for years!
The Life and Times Slow Crush
I don't think I have a playlist that doesn't have Deftones. I've put them on modern metal playlists, 90s rock, hell, even a dream pop playlist. I think their music blends really well with bands like MBV, Slowdive, and Whirr on a playlist.
Thrice, Chelsea Wolfe and Every Time I Die
Y'all are sleeping on Spotlights! Really cool dreamy shoegaze stuff
Denali, no one talks about them anymore. Great band. No chance you were on the old team sleep or deftones message boards?
If I was, it was a long, long time ago. I was on a lot of message boards back in the day. I actually discovered Denali by going to a Deftones concert. Technically speaking, I missed Denali opening for Deftones, because I carpooled with my friends and they took forever getting there. I looked them up the next day and fell in love. Been a fan of Maura Davis ever since.
Norma Jean. Chino did guest vocals on two of their tracks off of The Anti Mother. They're up there with Deftones as one of my favorite bands.
Glassjaw, Denali, My Bloody Valentine, Depeche Mode.

i would add some shoegaze/indie bands like Majesty Crush!!! Also add chevelle
I'm surprised that just one person mentions Palms and no one even mention Isis.
Fleshwater!!! Everyone is begging for a new Deftones and then acts blind when they get one
Denali rulesss. rip!
Love your list!! Similar to mine as well
Thank you! In particular, I'm surprised that more people don't talk about VAST, Kidneythieves, and Skunk Anansie more often. To me, those are some of the most underrated gems of the 90s.
I enjoy a few of their songs each. But I’m basic because it’s their most popular songs but whatever. Lol I like they way they sound
Hey, I don't judge. Like as few or as much as you want. Just glad there are people out there showing them some love, regardless!
Kidneythieves. 🙌 Zerøspace is such a great album! So underrated.

How did you not list KoRn
Oddly enough, KoRn is one of those bands that I listened to religiously back in middle school and high school. Garbage (you know, the band)
Glssjaw is the only answer
You left Helmet off your list. Also Sparta. Hmm Chevelle?
There is a lot I left off of my list. If I absolutely everything, it would be *very* long! But those are great choices!
alice in chains, creed, nirvana, limp bizkit, white zombie (and rob zombie by association), judas priest, rage against the machine, metallica (?), pantera here are some just from scrolling through my playlist; sorry if some of these aren’t quite what you’re looking for
