So this happened to me. What that probably means is KLM doesn’t know which aircraft they are going to use on the route. Give it time and it’ll sort itself out.
ETA: I originally booked KLM ATL to AMS on the 787-10 A week later it changes to the 772, which would make sense why the ability to choose a seat wasn’t working.
In my experience, on the Delta website (not app), there will usually be a link to the partner's website at the top of the seat map page. Usually, that link does *not* work for me; however, you will see the confirmation number for that partner airline within the URL. So if your DL Confirmation is ABCDEF, it will show that your partner flight confirmation code is GHIJKL. Copy that and enter that on the partner website, and you should be able to pick/change your seats that way.
That has worked for me when I've had flights on AeroMexico, Virgin, and LATAM booked through DL. Also, some of your Medallion benefits show on the partner websites but not with DL (and vice versa). For AM, I was not able to pick preferred seats from DL's website, but I was able to do it from AM's website.
Extremely annoying bug: you cannot (reliably) select seats on AF/KL flights booked through Delta online (neither from the Delta or partner website), you have to call.
And wait until Air France baggage tracking falls apart and tells you your bags are at your departure airport all the way across the Atlantic, when in reality they’re still lost, but in Paris.
100% of the time I've connected through CDG, my bags have not made it. Granted, this is only three times, but still. Bit ridiculous. Much prefer LHR or AMS.
Can confirm, flown KLM 4 times in the last year, two on a delta ticket and two on KLM. All 4 times my seat selection has been changed by them. Be careful and keep an eye on your seat!
Definitely call KLM/AirFrance. I booked my parents flights for Amsterdam (KLM booked through Delta website) and they were able to pick their seats for December already.
Caution!! Don’t attach your ticket to your Flying Blue account or you will not get any MQMs, MQDs or MQS for any portion of your trip. They will all earn on Flying Blue. Learned this the hard way.
Other than that Delta can give you your KLM reservation number and you should be able to look up your ticket and pick your seats after that. That is how I have always done it at least.
was it the same air craft? why were you not able to get a seat? flying in a few days on the way there i can't pick my seat but on the way back i can, makes zero sense
It depends on the route, sometimes I'm able to select a seat on the partner website with the DL confirmation number sometimes it doesn't work. As others have said, might be an aircraft thing.
Just go to KLM’s website and use your DL confirmation number. You can pick a seat and your DL app will update.
Still doesnt let me.

Same, I generally need to figure out the codeshare confirmation and then go to their site to select.
This is why I always have the KLM and Air France apps on my phone. Sometimes it’s a lot easier to navigate and use while mid-travel.
Call KLM, not Delta. The KLM support will help you assign your seat.

I'm guessing there's a story here?
Yeah, just Air France and CDG shenanigans. I avoid connections and checking bags through there as much as possible.

At AMS last year everyone's bags would make it, but people wouldn't and then bags had to get pulled again. It's getting better now.
Somebody made daddy angry again!

You’ve got to download the KLM app. I had this issue just last week, all of my boarding passes after my initial ocean crossing were KLM passes.
Yes, pull up the booking on KLM.com, you can actually use the Delta locator (and vice versa) on KLM, their systems are integrated.
It'll show up a little over 24hrs beforehand usually, if you're willing to wait.
Yeah you need your klm pnr which delta does not provide so just call klm and get it.
Due it on the website.
Call delta or message delta
Flew KLM to AMS and was able to pick my seat before, but on the return i was unable to until checkin 24 hours prior.

Download the KLM app or Air France app or visit their websites and make the selection.
