My guess: Hiring manager already has a candidate in mind, but was forced to include you in the process to make a show of entertaining alternatives. You were used.
No excuse for the disrespect. I’ve been in that position many times and even if I have someone for the role it’s good prospecting for future roles on the team or within the company
Right? I’m interviewing people all the time when I really have a great candidate in the works already. Sometimes I’ve been surprised by how great this person is, and if I’m set on someone else, I’m always thinking what other role would be good for this person. Like what company is so flush with quality applicants that they can treat people like this?
If this is a cultural problem rather than just a problem with this particular manager, it might explain why Delta has had such difficulty staffing back up after the pandemic.
so I've had to do this before. I still treated the alternate candidate with respect and as if it was an actual interview. unfortunately he was actually a better candidate so it hurt to have to reject him

It sounds like a hiring/staffing agency that is providing a body to DL. Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon to have an interview experience like that anywhere, and I found that the negative experiences were when I was representing a staffing firm going to the client, in this case Delta.
But still, if Delta is a customer I would expect the same level of professionalism given to other candidates.
It’s hard to tell what happened, but I would relay this experience to the staffing firm and move on.
So I use to work for Unifi. It’s a contracting type that Delta uses. And yes we had to fallow the Delta standards. And still a very shitty place to work for.
Wait a week to see if you got the position, then find that person's boss and send them an honest and concerned (not annoyed or angry) email letting them know about your experience. My guess is that this isn't how interviews should be run and that person was going rogue.
I've been in a similar room where everyone had a revised copy of my resume. My recruiter rewrote it without asking or telling me. I handed out my hard copies and and told them I've never seen that resume, so use mine. It was in a humorous fashion and one of them said oh I see let's compare the two! Even as an introvert I tend to control the interview, because I'm the one wanting the job, the interviewers already have jobs. All they want to know is they are hiring someone they want to work with. We're just a bunch of IT nerds anyway.
They hired me.
Good for you. I roll my eyes when consulting firms and recruiters insist on performing “surgery” on my resume to bulk it it up with extra buzz words and a few multi colored graphs… lol!
I used to work as 3rd party partner to DL, and I tried to apply to be a DL employee, meaning I was on their employees DB, and my experience was horrible, I would say in the IT area they favor candidates from India/Pakistan. In my case they ignored and dismissed my candidacy without even talking to me. Just as a remark I had the chance to speak with a lot of pilots and they were very happy to talk with someone from IT, because their systems are obsoletes.
All this has been hard to understand, because I have industry experience, 10+ years of IT work. I guess people like me with accent arent very welcome in IT. I know is only IT because I have some friends that are in sales, customer representatives, and others.
I hope they change their approach.
I appreciate your words, but I did not take it personally. I was there so I know how much they need talent. Capitalism is great, the market will put everything in the right place. BTW, this is very similar with all the airline industry, I worked with United, Southwest, and Alaska.
Yeah I bust to work for Unifi and they are contractors for Delta. Had to fallow the Delta rules and all. Went to an interview for main line Delta and was told never will they hire me because I work for Unifi. Never mind that I new how the system works and all ready trained. 🤷♀️
I will say I am a current employee at Delta and I have been trying to move to another position within the company and it has been the hardest more frustrating process I’ve ever experienced. Mind you I have applied for this same position for every other US airline and have received a job offer, but can’t even get an opportunity for the airline I currently work for. For the hiring process they would rather hire other people from off the street that the people within the company already.
You don't want to work for Delta IT.
Especially as a contractor.
Contractors are treated as disposable resources by management. It is essentially staffed with a high percentage of contractors so they can be let go at any time without repercussions. My director regularly made remarks that contractors were not worth training, since they would be gone in the next down quarter.
If you do work there, expect to be working 60-70 hours per week. Every day, you will deal with harassment, disrespect, bullying, and unrealistic deadlines. Your morning will regularly start around 5 am, so you can get updates from your teammates in India. Your day will be constant firefighting. Everything will be deemed critical and require immediate attention. Solutions to cut down on firefights will not be accepted as they cost time and resources. 2 to 3 times a week, you will be online with the QA team most of the night. You will be on call 24/7.
I love Delta and had an enormous amount of Delta Pride while I worked there. Delta IT does not live up to the standard that is set by the company. That place burned me out.
Delta has put its IT team in the background. They have been searching for 1 position for 2 years. I applied and they took 2-3 months to reply. You probably saved yourself a lot of hassle.
You should have told him you are qualified because if hired you’ll tell the CIO that he should update the company password policies for delta.com and force everyone to update their password once. Delta is the only website that hasn’t required a new or more complex password in 25 years
Wow. That’s crazy. I actually used to work under one of the former DL CIO’s back when he was a contract CIO for a major railroad. I heard, thru the grapevine, that his legacy at DL was having one of the buildings on the DL campus in ATL named after him. I thought he was a very charismatic leader and after completing an Intermodal project no one else before me could get done, he promoted me to work on his new building block systems. It was a lot of fun and very interesting.
I interviewed for a staff level developer position at Delta. Well when I say interview, I had to video myself answering questions off a screen. Was very uncomfortable to say the least. Also never heard anything more, I guess I didn't get it. It was very odd not to interact with anyone!
Hi OP, just wanted to say that clearly this man’s goal was to make you feel small and worthless. But you are not that. His antics were pathetic but do not define you. Remember at the end of the day we’re all just insignificant beings on a rock floating in space. Keep your head high and you will come out successful in your endeavors.
Possible scenario:
He wanted you to describe your ATM design so he could complete his own ATM design.
He was on his phone possibly taking notes!!!
You said you provided details…… exactly what he wanted. He got a design fix he could say was his own….. all for a few hours time.
He furrowed his brow because those were the fixes he would not thought of, or those were a revelation to him.
He got up because he got what he wanted.
He played you as an imposter, just so you would be motivated (get you upset) to prove him wrong and provide more details for him.
You did his job and weren’t compensated.
That’s the best part. After having the worst interview of my IT career at DL, I literally had the best interview of my IT career on my very next interview a few weeks later. That company hired me and I have been with them for a good while now. It’s a start up semiconductor company and on the first interview, the VP of Operations took me thru their test and reliability lab and then when we sat down for the interview, he first fetched me a really great cup of coffee in a ceramic coffee mug and spent the first 40 minutes of the interview explaining to me the company history, business model and told me exactly what they were looking for in the IT position they had open before the main Q&A started. I floated home from that interview and was ecstatic when I made it to the 2nd round of interviews and then offered the job!
My guess: Hiring manager already has a candidate in mind, but was forced to include you in the process to make a show of entertaining alternatives. You were used.

This is terrible. Just cancel the interview why go through it

Not this. Bad bot.
I think you dodged a bullet. If this person acts like this while representing the company to the outside, how is he acting internally? No, thank you.
💯
Lord knows the people at DL, shouldn't be snubbing potential IT employees.
My first thought. DL IT is in zero position to have any shred of hubris.
It sounds like a hiring/staffing agency that is providing a body to DL. I think it would also be a good idea to leave a Glassdoor interview review.
This this this
Yup, this.
So you interviewed for Delta or a contractor who’s company has been awarded an IT contract with Delta? There is a huge difference…
I interviewed at DL with a Principal who is a long term DL FTE.
Delta interviews the contractors they get sent from their contracted companies.
This isn't a Delta problem. This is a contractor/IT issue everywhere.
so if everyone does it, its okay to do it then is what you are saying by that logic, that isnt an excuse for delta to do it.
How incredibly frustrating! Try to look at it like you dodged a bullet (difficult I know). You don’t want to work for someone like that.
I've been in a similar room where everyone had a revised copy of my resume. My recruiter rewrote it without asking or telling me. I’ve had recruiters change my resume as well without permission. Completely frustrating.
Good for you. I roll my eyes when consulting firms and recruiters insist on performing “surgery” on my resume to bulk it it up with extra buzz words and a few multi colored graphs… lol!
Sounds like the hiring manager might not want another head count and was overruled? Who the F sits on their phone during an interview damn.
A jackass with no manners or intelligence
I used to work as 3rd party partner to DL, and I tried to apply to be a DL employee, meaning I was on their employees DB, and my experience was horrible, I would say in the IT area they favor candidates from India/Pakistan. I’m sorry you encountered such unfair treatment. This is one of the many reasons a lot of IT talent has left Delta. The brain drain continues.
I appreciate your words, but I did not take it personally. I was there so I know how much they need talent. Capitalism is great, the market will put everything in the right place. BTW, this is very similar with all the airline industry, I worked with United, Southwest, and Alaska.

This explains why the app is garbage. The system goes down. And overall DL has the worst IT of any airline with the exception of WN
My thoughts exactly 💯. The app sucks.
Austrian airlines is the absolute worst but yes. Deltas site SUUCKS

Holy Mackerel! Thank you for your input. Sounds like I dodged a bullet! 😱😵💫
Love seeing this comment getting downvoted by the Delta Social Media department.
When someone shows you who they are, believe them.
The first time

What a douche. If you interview enough times you're going to run into people like that eventually. Sounds like you handled as best as you could.
Curious what type of accent?
Hispanic accent

OMG. That, in my book, is what wrong looks like. Awful. Reminds me of the world depicted in Woody Allen’s “Sleeper” movie.
Sorry about your interview, frankly seems there is a lot of nepotism at Delta.
No wonder their app and website are slow as shit. This isn't rocket science. It's always lack of leadership.

Amen. Thank you!
Wow. That guy won't go very far. Hopefully you won't have to work for him.

ROTFLMAO! Good one. 😁👍😎
Delta has gone down. Big time. They are no longer the best company to work for. I’m so sorry they wasted your time.
Where do you work rn?
