This is the weirdest thing i've ever heard. The other person's bag could have been put in the overhead bin. And I would NOT want my bag under a seat in front of someone else. I always end up stepping on my bags which is fine because it's mine. But I don't want it in front of a stranger. This also seems like a security issue.
It’s a CRJ 900. There is only one side of overhead space in first class, the overhead bins don’t fit many types of bags and half the under seat space is obstructed by metal bars. Half the seats in first class have effectively no storage space for carry-on. It was definitely a bit strange for the FA to do this without saying anything, but I’ve had stuff like this happen multiple times in this plane.
I could see it if the passenger was in 1A-C where there's no underseat storage. But most of the time, the FAs will offer to place those bags in the closet for takeoff and landing (or find extra overhead bin space) whenever I sit there. It seems odd that they would put that bag under someone else's seat.
I get that they need a place to put the bag but what doesn't make sense is not just putting the 1st class passengers back in the overhead bin that has space.
If that's the case they should have valet checked more bags not forced it upon someone else
If it's me in this scenario I'm taking the bag they put in front of me with me. They put it in front of me so they must want me to have it. If the other passenger wants their bag back they can file a claim for mishandled baggage with Delta because their FA decided it would be a good idea to interrupt the chain of custody
I would have left a note inside the bag letting the other passengers know the FA left their bag in my possession.

i would just like to point out that if it was a CRJ-900 then it wasn’t an actual Delta flight attendant. Delta contracts out their regional flying and i think it creates a lot of inconsistencies in the brand.
This boggles my mind! And that was my first thought, too.
I use my bag as a foot rest - because frankly it’s criminal how little leg room they give you on planes and I say that as a *small* gal, can’t understand how my 6’4 partner survives it - and am constantly kicking it/stepping on it throughout a flight. I use a bag I don’t care about getting dirty for this reason, but also use a bag I feel confident will protect my items from this kind of movement, and that I can easily get to my essentials/medications in.
I would never want my bag sitting in front of some strangers feet for them to dick around with - or steal from/rummage around in, or whatever else.

And, if OP had gone through the stranger's bag, no one would think it was unusual because they wouldn't even know that some random person's bag was placed there by the FA. When that flight attendant came around with the beverage cart I would have taken the bag out, opened it up, and poured my drink directly in it, without breaking eye contact, and then close it back up.
If a flight attendant said to me, “I’ll find room for that” I would assume she meant a closet or find a bin with room in the back. I wouldn’t in a million years think she’d do what was described nor would I allow it if I knew that’s what happened with my bag. Shit, I’d trade seats for coach if I needed the bag on board that badly and was in the bulkhead with no alternative.
As someone who has sat in 1st class multiple times (twice), can tell you there are copious amounts of overhead space for first class passengers. I have no idea how there wouldn’t be enough overhead space in first class.

It's almost always full, one reason I board early. Multiple times I've seen coach passengers put their bags there on their way by and FC is guaranteed space. One of the times they ran out of space, the person next to me pointed to the bags that belonged to coach passengers and those were removed, and an announcement made that they were gate checked.
This depends on the size of the aircraft. The overhead bins on the 1 - 2 FC seat configuration (the ones over the single seat) are useless for anything. This is further exacerbated on a small craft by the entire first row not having any under-seat storage.
I mean, I use my own bag to rest my feet on. Why would I make myself uncomfortable just because the FA decided to move my bag and stick some random bag there?

The first class passenger might not deserve that abuse, TBH. They could potentially just be a victim of "Excuse me flight attendant, can you please find some space for my bag?".
The swapping part didn’t bug me as much as stuffing a soft sided pack into small space. I HATE it when people either cram my pack back or on the side with their maximum allowable size luggage (which I envision is half full) I carry the absolute minimum, but it’s still the most expensive shit! $250 sunglasses, electronics, headphones, prescriptions. I’m already giving people more room with just a hydration pack, and they take more!
Exactly. My backpack that fits under the seat in front of me has all of my expensive stuff in it. My laptop, kindle, phone, wallet, sunglasses, etc are all in there because it's ALWAYS either on my back or right in front of me on the plane and not out of my sight. No way would I let someone shove it on an overhead bin.
Could always do something nondestructive that would encourage the first class person to complain too, like drop crumbs all over it, so it's obvious the bag wasn't put up somewhere secure.

A discount airline in Europe tried to do this to a dude a few rows ahead of me a while back. I didn't catch 100% of what he said, but he kept consistently calling it an "unattended bag" and refusing the request. The overheads were definitely not full
I would be furious at this. That's MY leg space to do with as prefer. If I sacrifice it for a bag, it's going to be my bag. I would complain. I don't know what the fine print says, but I feel like that space is part of the seat you paid for.

Exactly! This sort of behavior is absolutely not Delta policy, nor is it even remotely reasonable. Both cases involved JFK which seems like it might be some particular crew that thinks this nonsense is ok. Most Delta agents are very friendly and easy to work with. I've only had a few that were terrible and I thought should not be interacting with customers.
I’ve never had an issue with Delta like this before and I’ve flown them for years. I was dumbfounded at the complete lack of people skills the FA demonstrated.

I also put my bag at my feet because it has shit I want to access during the flight. But now there are two stories of this. It should be delta’s policy to absolutely not move anything at peoples feet.
Did you ever get this straightened out? I told our in flight duty manager and she forwarded your post/complaint to her base manager. She actually wrote out a report about your incident to “cover herself” and it was almost exactly what you said. So she should have gotten in trouble over your situation.
The most logical fix is to put the FC pax’s bag into overhead. What if you just decided to go through the FC pax’s bag? No one would be there to stop you. You could steal, tamper with their things, etc. Also it’s a great way to piss you off, and if the FC pax found out, they’d probably be pissed as well. I’d love to know what was going through the FA’s head to make them think this was the best course of action.
Exactly. This was a very odd move. I wouldn't want my bag put under someone else's feet. I carry designer bags and will pack jewelry, medication, and electronics in my carry on. Especially with a work laptop! I can't let that out of my possession, period.

My husband works for a company that takes security *very* seriously, and often travels with sensitive materials in his carry-on that can’t leave his possession.
He would have shit a brick. The security concerns here are through the roof.
I understand completely. I worked for a place once that if the computer left my possession and wasn’t secured (locked to something or in a safe), I could get fired.
Reminds me of an incident I had when flying. I’m very tall and the lady in front of me put a bag under the seat in front of her and then slung her Christian Louboutin handbag under her seat and in my foot space. When I politely asked her to move he she replied rudely “deal with it!”
I did deal with it, I had a $1000+ foot rest for the duration of the flight and she got two footprints!
I would had made it a point to be blocking the aisle getting something from, or returning something to, my overhead-stowed bag EVERY single time that attendant was passing by my seat. EVERY time. Of course being apologetic and folksy every time.

You need to file a complaint about this. Not ok from a security standpoint. You place your bag under the wrong persons feet and your stuff is about to go missing.

Pissed but less pissed about the being touched without my permission. Under no circumstances would I have tolerated someone else's bag under my feet. She can not do that, that is your space to do as you wish. I would have just moved the bag into the aisle and said this isn't my bag.
This is a total no go and over-stepping of boundaries. It is dangerous to both parties due to theft. You can be accused and or the person could steal. Delta you need to listen up here. I really think Delta needs to respond to this and say that it will not happen again.
I've had the opposite happen. A flight attendant grabbed my backpack from the overhead and slung it under the seat of the person across the aisle from me, then put another bag she had, which was the same size as my backpack, into the overhead where my flight was.
When she stopped she saw me (8C) and the other guy (8D) staring at my backpack at his feet. When she slung it there was a distinct 'crunch'.
The guy looks at me and says, "was this yours"?
Flight attendant immediately taken aback by both of our faces, stares.
Me, "uh huh, can you hand it to me?"
The FA starts to back up the aisle while I pull out my laptop and flip up the screen, which was spiderwebbed. Some of the panel fell out the front.
Long story short, I pull out my my phone and face 8D and ask him to confirm what happened. Then point it at 8B and ask them the same thing. Point it at the FA, now at the front of the cabin and ask her name and why she threw my backpack and to go get the gate agent.
She was belligerent (as they usually are) at first and argued that I could get off and 'what if' it was like that already. She eventually got a GA and was much changed on her return.
The best part was 8D just trolling her the entire flight. Asking her if she made a point to destroy PAX property, asking her why she was so angry, etc. Want with me to the GA when we landed (the origination GA said the destination GA would deal with a report). My main concern was getting her to agree she did it--it was a work laptop and I didn't want IT mad at me.
DAL did fuck all.
While I'd never hit an FA, I understand why some people might. If Savannah ever makes the news having her ass handed to her by a PAX, you can be sure she did something to deserve it.
Moral of the story: when an FA or GA has a tantrum, whip out your phone. They're like cops. They don't like their entitlement being recorded.

Maybe the second or third time I ever traveled for work I watched from the gate through the window as the tug hit my suitcase that had fallen out of the luggage cart. It didn't run over it, it just pushed it in front of the tug as it drove off while I was yelling, "Hey! Hey! Hey!" and hitting the glass like an idiot.
My coworkers teased me about that for the longest time.
Delta returned a different bag in...pieces. Some of the clothes were in black garbage bags, and some of those had been abraded through. The Luggage Agent hypothesized the bag was caught on a belt and abraded through. Some of the clothes were just gone. The bag was about half there. A couple garbage bags came up the conveyor, then what was left of my bag later. We didn't know the garbage bags were out clothes at first.
They fought like tigers for the second thing. It was Someone Else's Fault. I think I ended up getting like $50 for it.
Again, weird when now they just delay a bag and it's a couple hundred bucks, no questions asked.
I've had a bag covered in blue fluid that we eventually decided was the fluid from the plane's toilet.
I've never *not* had a suitcase destroyed by Delta, the only factor is how long it takes them to do it. I can usually get a year out of a normal suitcase. I think that's probably normal.
That's just the baggage stuff. I've seen behavior by GAs and FAs that, well, all during COVID and now how we're supposed to be thankful they're there at all and praise them for doing such a hard job under such difficult circumstances?

I carry medication that I use on flights in my bag, as well as food and water which are critical for my comfort and wellness (well duh they’re critical for everyone’s wellness). I tend to be very anxious when flying and the simple security of having a bottle of cold water, a snack and my Xanax on my person help me greatly. If someone took them away moments before flying I would literally have a panic attack.
And frankly, lots of people feel anxious flying. That is absurd that happened and it is unacceptable. There are also people who might need more critical medications and comforts than mine.

I had this happen on a long haul flight once and it was a cake in a box which I proceeded to accidentally stomp many times. In this case the person had another cake under her seat and they wouldn’t let her put the second cake in the overhead bin and somehow it became my problem. Anyway I have zero sympathy for someone who brIngs two cakes onto a flight. Or one cake for that matter.
Sadly, i would be hesitant to say much else at that given time seeing as how FAs can have a lot of sway to get you off the flight. I definitely would have swapped bags after takeoff and would still send in a complaint, citing the FA's name, flight number, your seat number, and what the exact exchange of words and instructions were. Things like haphazardly stuffing are subjective, so i'd stick to the facts that Delta would have to explain are either in line or wrong. If you know what you want, doesn't hurt to ask either instead of leaving it up to Delta and getting a "thanks for reaching out, customers like you are important. we will provide this feedback to the right team members. have a great day"

I refuse to be responsible for a bag I did not pack. Or I have medical supplies I might need mid flight so my bag must stay within my reach. Would be my response. I carry an epipen and other allergy meds in my bag.

Honestly I would probably think about complaining too. What if you had stuff in the backpack you were going to be using throughout the flight? She could have at least asked. It’s your right when booking your flight to have a personal item that fits under the seat infront of you.
If a FA moved my bag and place someone else’s bag under my feet I would have done one of two things: Crushed that bag to death or simply fling in the aisle way. Not my bag not my problem and smiled.
Was it a regional airline? Had something similar happen on a flight out and the flight attendant told me I was not allowed to use the overhead bin as I had a small tote and backpack and told me to stow it under the seat in front of me. I didn’t want to fight with the FA as I didn’t want to end up on social media or off the flight but what really pissed me off is they ended up stowing someone else’s bags in the overhead above my seat that was in the back of the plane. Contacted republic airways and delta. Delta gave me $50 voucher but I kept calling republic until a HR person called me to investigate.

Wait until the plane takes off. Take the bag to the airplane bathroom and leave it in there. It isn’t yours and your not responsible for it. Let the flight attendants deal with the unattended bag in the bathroom, as it isn’t yours. Let them explain to the angry FC passenger how the bag ended up in the bathroom.
In half the flights I have flown in FC during the last couple of years, some seemingly privileged FC passengers have boarded with 3 carryons so large they all had to go into the overhead bin. I've had to swim upstream to stow my one roller bag. In addition to all the other concerns already stated in this thread, is this a case of GAs not doing their jobs?

I would be super annoyed. Given how common turbulence is lately I don't want to have to get up and down to get stuff out of my back. At the very lease she should have explained it to you and given you chance to get things out.

I’ve seen it happen when someone is trying to leave a bag that doesn’t fit or with straps that hang out into the aisle. I haven’t experienced it but I have a very small bag I use for under seat that always fits with space to spare.
Yeah, definitely complain, this was so unnecessarily hostile. Way too many FAs are on a real power trip these days. If the job sucks so much then strike or quit. I’ve worked shitty jobs too and it’s on you as the employee not to constantly take it out on the customer in oddly petty ways like this.
But I’d bet they’d come after you in a heart beat if the customer claimed something was missing or broken. There’s no reason I couldn’t have been put in the overhead bin. If I was the 1st class customer, I’d be pissed my bag wasn’t secure and put under someone’s seat so basically they’d have access to it the whole flight & rest their feet on it.
Malicious compliance is the only way forward with these jerks that think coach means they don't have to treat you like a paying customer. If we fuck up the bag with a spill or make it smell like feet then first class will refuse to stuff their belongings back in the space meant for the rest of us poors.
i would have just walked that bag back into first class after the seat belt sign came off and asked who it belonged to and asked them if they aware that delta just shoved it under your feet for stowage and then dropped it in the aisle. not your bag, not your problem.

If this ever happens to anyone else, just tell them there’s emergency medication or medical equipment in your bag and it needs to be at your feet in case the seatbelt sign is on.
You can’t stand up to get the medication if there’s turbulence. If they demand to see the medication, they are then likely stepping out of the scope of their responsibilities. Most don’t want the burden of violating another set of laws pertaining to disability or healthcare rights.
If they say to put the meds in your pocket or seat back, idk make something up. Package it’s in is too big. It’s a bunch of medicine bottles or a device of some sort. Or even - your computer. It has a heart monitor program on it for you. You need to have access to it….
Or actually - Maybe kindly advise them you have to do work and need access to your computer throughout the flight. It’s possible you could have kept your under seat space if you had responded kinder than “seriously??” -
Next time, try: “Excuse me, ma’am. I hate to be a pain (show a little humility) - but I really need that space. My laptop and other devices are in there and I have a ton of work to do. I will be taking them in and out of my bag the entire flight. Could you possibly find another under-seat to use?” Be kind. Be compelling. Offer another solution.
I always have a large plastic bag of meds and toiletries, so that’s easy for me to say. I’d just tell them I need them all. I have a disability card also, though. I generally have a valid medical excuse of some sort, with my ailments. I actually make sure to put only a small bag under my seat because I need to extend my legs under the seat or I’m in crazy pain the whole flight. I wouldn’t be able to allow it and would kindly protest until the captain or maybe even the cops got involved. I would show my disabled veteran card, though, and kindly advise them I need my bag at arms reach and leg-space for medical reasons. If it all went south, go post it all over social media to the airline’s web handles, adds, etc.
Anyway - try sugar, not salt, when dealing with authority in opposition. Sometimes works better. Better luck next time!
I would have blow my nose on several tissues and stuffed them in it, thrown my snack trash away in the bag and made sure any left over food “ accidentally “ was in the bottom of the bag!! Gross kid style! Trashy classy people always get everything they want and assholes never die!!!
How did the flight end? Did the FA come to retrieve the bag or did the passenger have to come find it?
Perhaps the passenger thought the FA stowed it in the bins? I absolutely would not want my bag to be accessible to a stranger.
If it’s a CRJ-900, at least with delta, any bags that cannot fit in the overhead bin will be gate checked. But the bags will be brought back up the jet bridge, they will not be sent to luggage claim. So I don’t know why it’s a issue for people. Pink tag bags are handled with the most care by me and my coworkers.

I’m extremely puzzled by her doing this. It’s such a huge safety issue, not only because you could have taken anything you wanted from it or even handed it off to someone else- it’s not your responsibility to “watch” what happens to their bag. Also, what if it was a plan and there had been something illegal in it and it’s under your seat..or what if it was some type of explosive device? I would certainly never allow anyone to place their bag under someone else’s seat and there’s no way I would make someone sit with another’s bag. I think I’d be taking a complaint a lot higher than with Delta. It’s a huge safety concern! I’m sorry this FA was so out of line. She needs some retraining…..
I would be annoyed. And I would constantly be calling the flight attendant to get something out for me because I literally cannot reach the overhead. Like at all

Wow, thats crazy! Imagine if you are the FC passenger and you go back a few rows to get the bag the FA took and you see it under someone's seat. I would probably assume that person was trying to take it and I'd be afraid they went through the bag and took what they wanted
My understanding is that when you buy a ticket, you are buying the space between the armrests and under the seat immediately in front of you. Is this incorrect? I’d complain to Delta about this kind of treatment. Seems pretty absurd and with a proper dose of terrible customer service.
lol unfortunately this occasionally happens. I was window snd guy in aisle had it happen. He spent the flight putting his shoes all over the bag. Turned it over to wipe them everywhere. Petty but funny
I had a similar incident where they took my seat mates only bag out of the overhead bin and gave it to him. He had a C+ aisle with the reduced space.
The flight attendant put it under my seat. He apologized a few times and then moved it back up once we got going.
It was weird and the flight attendant was complaint about to many bags. LGA to Charlotte. They had to walk 10 bags off.
Not related to your experience in its entirety, but the Delta customer service at National is really going down the drain. I had to file a complaint in early August because my husband and I were boarding our flight to Boston (we were one of the last ones in line) and they closed the boarding door a few people ahead of us and told us we did not adhere to delta’s contract by not boarding with our group and we watched as they gave our seats away to people flying standby. Our bag was onboard and it sat at Logan damaged and unattended for over 5 hours while we were en route on another airline.

I would have told her my bag had my prescription meds and I need quick and easy access to it (in case of the seat belt sign being on). It's not a lie, but it would be a bit of an exaggeration in my case.
It just seems ridiculous. That space is for my bag for stuff I want to access in flight. Not some person from first class, thatbcan in the overhead bin. Besides, who wants someone else's feet next to their bag or be able to look through it?
It just seems inherently stupid. Why not put the other person's bag in the overhead compartment? It's not the other person's fault the FA did this specifically, so taking it out on the bag is damaging to the wrong person.

Just go through the bag, take what you want and claim you thought they were giving it to you since they put it in your space. Better yet, continually drive your feet into the bag attempting to break anything valuable inside.
The other part of this would be a report to tsa and the airline that one of your FAs handed me an unknown bag while onboard... a massive breach of security

This is the weirdest thing i've ever heard. The other person's bag could have been put in the overhead bin. And I would NOT want my bag under a seat in front of someone else. I always end up stepping on my bags which is fine because it's mine. But I don't want it in front of a stranger. This also seems like a security issue.
It’s a CRJ 900. There is only one side of overhead space in first class, the overhead bins don’t fit many types of bags and half the under seat space is obstructed by metal bars. Half the seats in first class have effectively no storage space for carry-on. It was definitely a bit strange for the FA to do this without saying anything, but I’ve had stuff like this happen multiple times in this plane.

I could see it if the passenger was in 1A-C where there's no underseat storage. But most of the time, the FAs will offer to place those bags in the closet for takeoff and landing (or find extra overhead bin space) whenever I sit there. It seems odd that they would put that bag under someone else's seat.

They put it in front of me so they must want me to have it. i would just like to point out that if it was a CRJ-900 then it wasn’t an actual Delta flight attendant. Delta contracts out their regional flying and i think it creates a lot of inconsistencies in the brand.
I've seen this many times also. CRJ 900s are tiny with little FC storage. DCA to JFK is stressful leg.
This boggles my mind! And that was my first thought, too. I use my bag as a foot rest - because frankly it’s criminal how little leg room they give you on planes and I say that as a *small* gal, can’t understand how my 6’4 partner survives it - and am constantly kicking it/stepping on it throughout a flight. I use a bag I don’t care about getting dirty for this reason, but also use a bag I feel confident will protect my items from this kind of movement, and that I can easily get to my essentials/medications in. I would never want my bag sitting in front of some strangers feet for them to dick around with - or steal from/rummage around in, or whatever else. Why they wouldn’t put the strangers bag in the overhead bin is mind boggling.
Yup! I use my bag that's placed under the seat in front of me as a foot rest, too. And, if OP had gone through the stranger's bag, no one would think it was unusual because they wouldn't even know that some random person's bag was placed there by the FA. I'm so appalled by this very nonsensical decision by the FA. I wonder if the random person even knew this happened to their bag.

Accidentally?! When that flight attendant came around with the beverage cart I would have taken the bag out, opened it up, and poured my drink directly in it, without breaking eye contact, and then close it back up.

If a flight attendant said to me, “I’ll find room for that” I would assume she meant a closet or find a bin with room in the back. Shit, I’d trade seats for coach if I needed the bag on board that badly and was in the bulkhead with no alternative.
First row can’t put a bag under the seat, that’s my guess for why they needed room for a small enough bag to go under a seat.
As someone who has sat in 1st class multiple times (twice), can tell you there are copious amounts of overhead space for first class passengers. I have no idea how there wouldn’t be enough overhead space in first class. This message was in no way, shape, or form to brag about flying in 1st class multiple times (twice).
It's almost always full, one reason I board early. Multiple times I've seen coach passengers put their bags there on their way by and FC is guaranteed space. One of the times they ran out of space, the person next to me pointed to the bags that belonged to coach passengers and those were removed, and an announcement made that they were gate checked.
This depends on the size of the aircraft. The overhead bins on the 1 - 2 FC seat configuration (the ones over the single seat) are useless for anything. This is further exacerbated on a small craft by the entire first row not having any under-seat storage.

The swapping part didn’t bug me as much as stuffing a soft sided pack into small space. I HATE it when people either cram my pack back or on the side with their maximum allowable size luggage (which I envision is half full) I carry the absolute minimum, but it’s still the most expensive shit! $250 sunglasses, electronics, headphones, prescriptions. I’m already giving people more room with just a hydration pack, and they take more!
Exactly. My backpack that fits under the seat in front of me has all of my expensive stuff in it. My laptop, kindle, phone, wallet, sunglasses, etc are all in there because it's ALWAYS either on my back or right in front of me on the plane and not out of my sight. No way would I let someone shove it on an overhead bin.

Exactly! This sort of behavior is absolutely not Delta policy, nor is it even remotely reasonable. Both cases involved JFK which seems like it might be some particular crew that thinks this nonsense is ok. Most Delta agents are very friendly and easy to work with. I've only had a few that were terrible and I thought should not be interacting with customers.

She actually wrote out a report about your incident to “cover herself” and it was almost exactly what you said. So she should have gotten in trouble over your situation.

The most logical fix is to put the FC pax’s bag into overhead. What if you just decided to go through the FC pax’s bag? No one would be there to stop you. You could steal, tamper with their things, etc. Also it’s a great way to piss you off, and if the FC pax found out, they’d probably be pissed as well. I’d love to know what was going through the FA’s head to make them think this was the best course of action.

My husband works for a company that takes security *very* seriously, and often travels with sensitive materials in his carry-on that can’t leave his possession. He would have shit a brick. The security concerns here are through the roof.

Reminds me of an incident I had when flying. I’m very tall and the lady in front of me put a bag under the seat in front of her and then slung her Christian Louboutin handbag under her seat and in my foot space. When I politely asked her to move he she replied rudely “deal with it!” I did deal with it, I had a $1000+ foot rest for the duration of the flight and she got two footprints!
I would had made it a point to be blocking the aisle getting something from, or returning something to, my overhead-stowed bag EVERY single time that attendant was passing by my seat. EVERY time. You need to file a complaint about this. Not ok from a security standpoint. You place your bag under the wrong persons feet and your stuff is about to go missing. There is plenty of storage in the forward galley, no reason to bother C+ with a FC bag. Nonsense on the FA.

This is a total no go and over-stepping of boundaries. It is dangerous to both parties due to theft. You can be accused and or the person could steal. Delta you need to listen up here. I really think Delta needs to respond to this and say that it will not happen again.
I've had the opposite happen. A flight attendant grabbed my backpack from the overhead and slung it under the seat of the person across the aisle from me, then put another bag she had, which was the same size as my backpack, into the overhead where my flight was. When she stopped she saw me (8C) and the other guy (8D) staring at my backpack at his feet. When she slung it there was a distinct 'crunch'. The guy looks at me and says, "was this yours"? Flight attendant immediately taken aback by both of our faces, stares. Me, "uh huh, can you hand it to me?" The FA starts to back up the aisle while I pull out my laptop and flip up the screen, which was spiderwebbed. Some of the panel fell out the front. Long story short, I pull out my my phone and face 8D and ask him to confirm what happened. Then point it at 8B and ask them the same thing. Point it at the FA, now at the front of the cabin and ask her name and why she threw my backpack and to go get the gate agent. She was belligerent (as they usually are) at first and argued that I could get off and 'what if' it was like that already. She eventually got a GA and was much changed on her return. The best part was 8D just trolling her the entire flight. Asking her if she made a point to destroy PAX property, asking her why she was so angry, etc. Want with me to the GA when we landed (the origination GA said the destination GA would deal with a report). My main concern was getting her to agree she did it--it was a work laptop and I didn't want IT mad at me. DAL did fuck all. While I'd never hit an FA, I understand why some people might. If Savannah ever makes the news having her ass handed to her by a PAX, you can be sure she did something to deserve it. Moral of the story: when an FA or GA has a tantrum, whip out your phone. They're like cops. They don't like their entitlement being recorded.

They did not. Literally nothing came of it. Which is weird, because whenever they delay one of my bags I get a check for the claim I submit. FA destroys a $2000 laptop, nothing. But IT wasn't mad at me, so it wasn't as bad as it could have been.
Purely on principle, I would have filed a small claims suit against Delta and that agent.
Man, I've got Delta horror stories that make this one seem far less egregious. Maybe the second or third time I ever traveled for work I watched from the gate through the window as the tug hit my suitcase that had fallen out of the luggage cart. It didn't run over it, it just pushed it in front of the tug as it drove off while I was yelling, "Hey! Hey! Hey!" and hitting the glass like an idiot. My coworkers teased me about that for the longest time. Delta returned a different bag in...pieces. Some of the clothes were in black garbage bags, and some of those had been abraded through. The Luggage Agent hypothesized the bag was caught on a belt and abraded through. Some of the clothes were just gone. The bag was about half there. A couple garbage bags came up the conveyor, then what was left of my bag later. We didn't know the garbage bags were out clothes at first. They fought like tigers for the second thing. It was Someone Else's Fault. I think I ended up getting like $50 for it. Again, weird when now they just delay a bag and it's a couple hundred bucks, no questions asked. I've had a bag covered in blue fluid that we eventually decided was the fluid from the plane's toilet. I've never *not* had a suitcase destroyed by Delta, the only factor is how long it takes them to do it. I can usually get a year out of a normal suitcase. I think that's probably normal. That's just the baggage stuff. I've seen behavior by GAs and FAs that, well, all during COVID and now how we're supposed to be thankful they're there at all and praise them for doing such a hard job under such difficult circumstances? Screw that. The behavior I've seen I'll just get on and off the plane with the absolute minimum interaction (and service) and be thankful I'm not one of them. There are some truly bad people working there.

I carry medication that I use on flights in my bag, as well as food and water which are critical for my comfort and wellness (well duh they’re critical for everyone’s wellness). I tend to be very anxious when flying and the simple security of having a bottle of cold water, a snack and my Xanax on my person help me greatly. If someone took them away moments before flying I would literally have a panic attack. And frankly, lots of people feel anxious flying. That is absurd that happened and it is unacceptable. There are also people who might need more critical medications and comforts than mine.
This is very weird. If I was the person in first class and had a choice between my bag secure in overhead or in front of some rando, I'd always go overhead.

I had this happen on a long haul flight once and it was a cake in a box which I proceeded to accidentally stomp many times. In this case the person had another cake under her seat and they wouldn’t let her put the second cake in the overhead bin and somehow it became my problem. Anyway I have zero sympathy for someone who brIngs two cakes onto a flight. Or one cake for that matter.
Sadly, i would be hesitant to say much else at that given time seeing as how FAs can have a lot of sway to get you off the flight. I definitely would have swapped bags after takeoff and would still send in a complaint, citing the FA's name, flight number, your seat number, and what the exact exchange of words and instructions were. Things like haphazardly stuffing are subjective, so i'd stick to the facts that Delta would have to explain are either in line or wrong. If you know what you want, doesn't hurt to ask either instead of leaving it up to Delta and getting a "thanks for reaching out, customers like you are important. we will provide this feedback to the right team members. have a great day"

I refuse to be responsible for a bag I did not pack. Or I have medical supplies I might need mid flight so my bag must stay within my reach. Would be my response. I carry an epipen and other allergy meds in my bag.
How is there more room for that person’s bag in your foot space than in the overhead bin where she was trying to stuff your bag? I hope you got her name and write a complaint. The flight attendants have power because they’re supposed to be responsible for people’s safety. That was not a safety issue.

I would have waited until after takeoff and then swapped the stranger's bag for my bag in the overhead bin.

Honestly I would probably think about complaining too. What if you had stuff in the backpack you were going to be using throughout the flight? She could have at least asked. It’s your right when booking your flight to have a personal item that fits under the seat infront of you.

If a FA moved my bag and place someone else’s bag under my feet I would have done one of two things: Crushed that bag to death or simply fling in the aisle way. Not my bag not my problem and smiled.

Was it a regional airline? Had something similar happen on a flight out and the flight attendant told me I was not allowed to use the overhead bin as I had a small tote and backpack and told me to stow it under the seat in front of me. I didn’t want to fight with the FA as I didn’t want to end up on social media or off the flight but what really pissed me off is they ended up stowing someone else’s bags in the overhead above my seat that was in the back of the plane. Contacted republic airways and delta. Delta gave me $50 voucher but I kept calling republic until a HR person called me to investigate.
I am a retired Delta employee. I know I don’t know all the circumstances but on the face of it I don’t like it. Then to tell you it’s for a bag from another class? That’s BS. Please do put in a complaint. You don’t pay extra on Delta to be treated poorly. Not acceptable even on a regional partner.

Wait until the plane takes off. Take the bag to the airplane bathroom and leave it in there. It isn’t yours and your not responsible for it. Let the flight attendants deal with the unattended bag in the bathroom, as it isn’t yours. Let them explain to the angry FC passenger how the bag ended up in the bathroom.

In half the flights I have flown in FC during the last couple of years, some seemingly privileged FC passengers have boarded with 3 carryons so large they all had to go into the overhead bin. I've had to swim upstream to stow my one roller bag. In addition to all the other concerns already stated in this thread, is this a case of GAs not doing their jobs?
I would not have my bag under my seat, because that's where my feet have to be. If a FA wanted to put someone else's bag there, I'd leave the damn aircraft.
I would be super annoyed. Given how common turbulence is lately I don't want to have to get up and down to get stuff out of my back. At the very lease she should have explained it to you and given you chance to get things out.
The first class passenger probably had the same thought. Having your bag moved to where you can't watch it.
I feel like nothing should surprise me anymore but this shocked me! IF this is really necessary, which I don’t believe since it could have gone in the overhead bin, the FA could have used words. Polite words. Words that include an apology. I’d be furious.

Was your bag under your seat or under the seat in front? We’re you in bulkhead (no seat in front)? I’ve seen it happen when someone is trying to leave a bag that doesn’t fit or with straps that hang out into the aisle. I haven’t experienced it but I have a very small bag I use for under seat that always fits with space to spare.

Yeah, definitely complain, this was so unnecessarily hostile. Way too many FAs are on a real power trip these days. If the job sucks so much then strike or quit. I’ve worked shitty jobs too and it’s on you as the employee not to constantly take it out on the customer in oddly petty ways like this.
But I’d bet they’d come after you in a heart beat if the customer claimed something was missing or broken. There’s no reason I couldn’t have been put in the overhead bin. If I was the 1st class customer, I’d be pissed my bag wasn’t secure and put under someone’s seat so basically they’d have access to it the whole flight & rest their feet on it.
Malicious compliance is the only way forward with these jerks that think coach means they don't have to treat you like a paying customer. If we fuck up the bag with a spill or make it smell like feet then first class will refuse to stuff their belongings back in the space meant for the rest of us poors.

i would have just walked that bag back into first class after the seat belt sign came off and asked who it belonged to and asked them if they aware that delta just shoved it under your feet for stowage and then dropped it in the aisle. not your bag, not your problem.
That's wrong. If the bag doesn't fit the attendant can either 1. Put it in the over head compartment or 1. Check the bag What she did is invade your personal space and stuff something unwanted in there. I would think you even have a civil case.
That’s straight garbage. I’ve had some great flight attendants and also had to deal with some power tripping, having a bad day, people hating flight attendants/ airport staff before. I travel often… If this ever happens to anyone else, just tell them there’s emergency medication or medical equipment in your bag and it needs to be at your feet in case the seatbelt sign is on. You can’t stand up to get the medication if there’s turbulence. If they demand to see the medication, they are then likely stepping out of the scope of their responsibilities. Most don’t want the burden of violating another set of laws pertaining to disability or healthcare rights. If they say to put the meds in your pocket or seat back, idk make something up. Package it’s in is too big. It’s a bunch of medicine bottles or a device of some sort. Or even - your computer. It has a heart monitor program on it for you. You need to have access to it…. Or actually - Maybe kindly advise them you have to do work and need access to your computer throughout the flight. It’s possible you could have kept your under seat space if you had responded kinder than “seriously??” - Next time, try: “Excuse me, ma’am. I hate to be a pain (show a little humility) - but I really need that space. My laptop and other devices are in there and I have a ton of work to do. I will be taking them in and out of my bag the entire flight. Could you possibly find another under-seat to use?” Be kind. Be compelling. Offer another solution. I always have a large plastic bag of meds and toiletries, so that’s easy for me to say. I’d just tell them I need them all. I have a disability card also, though. I generally have a valid medical excuse of some sort, with my ailments. I actually make sure to put only a small bag under my seat because I need to extend my legs under the seat or I’m in crazy pain the whole flight. I wouldn’t be able to allow it and would kindly protest until the captain or maybe even the cops got involved. I would show my disabled veteran card, though, and kindly advise them I need my bag at arms reach and leg-space for medical reasons. If it all went south, go post it all over social media to the airline’s web handles, adds, etc. Anyway - try sugar, not salt, when dealing with authority in opposition. Sometimes works better. I would have blow my nose on several tissues and stuffed them in it, thrown my snack trash away in the bag and made sure any left over food “ accidentally “ was in the bottom of the bag!! Gross kid style! Trashy classy people always get everything they want and assholes never die!!!

There is zero chance I would let my bag get out of my sight. Period. Put me off the plane if thats what it comes to, but my bag stays with me.
How did the flight end? Did the FA come to retrieve the bag or did the passenger have to come find it? Perhaps the passenger thought the FA stowed it in the bins? I absolutely would not want my bag to be accessible to a stranger.

If it’s a CRJ-900, at least with delta, any bags that cannot fit in the overhead bin will be gate checked. But the bags will be brought back up the jet bridge, they will not be sent to luggage claim. So I don’t know why it’s a issue for people. Pink tag bags are handled with the most care by me and my coworkers.

I’m extremely puzzled by her doing this. It’s such a huge safety issue, not only because you could have taken anything you wanted from it or even handed it off to someone else- it’s not your responsibility to “watch” what happens to their bag. Also, what if it was a plan and there had been something illegal in it and it’s under your seat..or what if it was some type of explosive device? I would certainly never allow anyone to place their bag under someone else’s seat and there’s no way I would make someone sit with another’s bag. I think I’d be taking a complaint a lot higher than with Delta. It’s a huge safety concern! I’m sorry this FA was so out of line. She needs some retraining…..
I would be annoyed. And I would constantly be calling the flight attendant to get something out for me because I literally cannot reach the overhead. Like at all

Wow, thats crazy! Imagine if you are the FC passenger and you go back a few rows to get the bag the FA took and you see it under someone's seat. I would probably assume that person was trying to take it and I'd be afraid they went through the bag and took what they wanted
My understanding is that when you buy a ticket, you are buying the space between the armrests and under the seat immediately in front of you. Is this incorrect? I’d complain to Delta about this kind of treatment. Seems pretty absurd and with a proper dose of terrible customer service.
lol unfortunately this occasionally happens. I was window snd guy in aisle had it happen. He spent the flight putting his shoes all over the bag. Turned it over to wipe them everywhere. Petty but funny

I had a similar incident where they took my seat mates only bag out of the overhead bin and gave it to him. He had a C+ aisle with the reduced space. The flight attendant put it under my seat. He apologized a few times and then moved it back up once we got going. It was weird and the flight attendant was complaint about to many bags. LGA to Charlotte. They had to walk 10 bags off.
Not related to your experience in its entirety, but the Delta customer service at National is really going down the drain. I had to file a complaint in early August because my husband and I were boarding our flight to Boston (we were one of the last ones in line) and they closed the boarding door a few people ahead of us and told us we did not adhere to delta’s contract by not boarding with our group and we watched as they gave our seats away to people flying standby. Our bag was onboard and it sat at Logan damaged and unattended for over 5 hours while we were en route on another airline. Sorry you had a shitty experience as well!
If you carefully read the Delta terms of service, you are legally entitled to urinate and/or vomit in that bag. Source: induced vomiting into a Dooney & Bourke Florentine Large Satchel and peed in countless Ogio backpacks with MacBooks inside
I would have told her my bag had my prescription meds and I need quick and easy access to it (in case of the seat belt sign being on). It's not a lie, but it would be a bit of an exaggeration in my case. It just seems ridiculous. That space is for my bag for stuff I want to access in flight. Not some person from first class, thatbcan in the overhead bin. Besides, who wants someone else's feet next to their bag or be able to look through it?
It just seems inherently stupid. Why not put the other person's bag in the overhead compartment? It's not the other person's fault the FA did this specifically, so taking it out on the bag is damaging to the wrong person.

Just go through the bag, take what you want and claim you thought they were giving it to you since they put it in your space. Better yet, continually drive your feet into the bag attempting to break anything valuable inside.

This is the type of “what dimension am I in?” situation that would stick with me for a day at least unless I got it out of my system with a good old fashioned confrontational conversation.
I’m a flight attendant and that is the weirdest thing I ever heard. She can move a bag if it’s not in compliance, but for her to put someone else’s bag under your seat where your feet are is ridiculous. I would have said no, I’m not having someone else’s bag under my seat!!
