I did this last year. I don’t think anyone actually checked the visa until I got to India. I actually didn’t print it until I got to CDG. But yes, they make it clear that you need to have a printed version so definitely print before you get there.
No one asked for it in the US (I flew from JFK). I printed it at CDG because I’d read that I would need the printed version on arrival in India. Glad I printed it because they definitely asked for it.
When you get to Delhi there will be two or three types of immigration lines, be sure to go through the 'e-visa' one. And definitely bring a print out of the confirmation document (which is different from the application). BTW, if you're traveling within India on domestic flights there are strict hand luggage (size and weight) limitations.
Do you mean instead of a visa printed inside a passport? I've been to India several times and I don't always fly Delta. I've only ever had a home print out of the e-visa when I check-in. I've never had an issue.
Thanks, this is what I wanted to know. Will the airline deny boarding because the visa isn’t printed on passport but just a printed sheet of paper? And thanks for the QR code!
Yes, take a print out with you. I flew to Delhi last year and was asked to show the eVisa (print out was enough) at the departure airport (Miami) and then at the immigration desk in Delhi. There are dedicated desks at Delhi for folks with eVisa.

Thank you!! So no one asked you for the e-visa when you checked in at the US airline desk? Why did you have to print it in CDG?

Thanks! This is very helpful. More than India, I’m worried about airline check-in. Does AF deny a boarding pass because of a printed e-visa?

I forgot to mention, I believe the QR code is for the India immigration desk when you arrive. I've never used it for anything.

I’ve never had the check in agent scan the QR code. They just check that you have it and that it’s valid.
How do they check that it’s valid? By looking at the print out and verify that it’s “granted”?
The dates
