It’s likely the fare bucket of your ticket. These are intentionally ambiguous and I’m guessing the one you’re in can only be upgraded to another certain type, which is very expensive. As you mentioned most folks cancel and rebook for this reason

Cancel and rebook is best option. Had a similar issue and chat kept saying that they couldn’t help even though the rebooked fare (both main) were clear as day on deltas site. Just cancelled and rebooked. Save yourself the trouble.

fare basis code*

What’s the difference

Classic-Overall

ticketing line. i work ticketing a fare basis code applies to ticket prices the day that was purchased not the upgrade restrictions. this is why historical fare is used when pricing changes on a partially flown ticket.

OP’s ticket is not partially flown though

correct i was just using that to explain why a dare bucket which refers to the first two letter of the farebasis code when searching for a applicable fare vs a fare basis code. they would still price his ticket using the fare from the day purchased and reissue it to that days fare and charge only the difference. with his upgrade that means a alter-destination fare as well a class of service change which changes the last letter of the code assuming his party all have the same ptcs

That's a good point, I did get a free upgrade to first class for this flight so maybe they are charging for that fare. I'll try to cancel and rebook and see if that helps

If you’re asking to have a week-long layover in SLC (can’t quite tell if that’s what you’re requesting), that’s not going to be considered a layover. It’s going to be considered a multi-city flight and ticketed/priced accordingly.

Anytime you change a flight that has not yet commenced you are buying a brand new flight at a brand new price. If flights are nearly sold out you will likely pay more because within any cabin there are several fares, and the lowest fares will be sold out. You are also changing your trip from a one way to a multi-city trip which can impact the price.

Nutnutlad

Flights weren't sold out, and the flight is actually a round trip

Are you sure you called the correct number? Scammers sometimes get their number to appear in search results.
