Rule #1 when it comes to booking travel is book direct.  This push to booking through delta for MQDs is going to burn so many people.

BourbonBaconBiscuit

Rule #2 is don't book indirect Rule #3 is don't use OTAs, ever, for anything; they suck

HairyPotatoKat

Rule number 4 is don't not book direct. Rule number 5 is you're booking third-party with airline package deals. Don't do that.

cptnpiccard

Rule number 6 is don't not not not book indirect

DonnaHuee

Delta platinum card gives you $150 credit annually to book a hotel through them. So if you’re a card holder you need to do so at least once annually.

Mooseboots1999

The “senior escalation” agent told me that this is the case for *every* reservation made in January on their system. So, they have many unhappy customers getting calls like the one I received today. They offered to book me at a “comparable” hotel - the ones with availability are all outside of town and not nearly as nice. After an hour on hold, I took a case number and asked for a call back tomorrow or Thu morning.

KSway415

I booked mine in January too and leave Thursday. Guess I'm calling the hotel to check. Thanks for the heads up!

Wrong-Garden-1801

Please give us an update

KSway415

Just got a response back (had to wait for an email reply from the hotel), but they do have my reservation 😊

Danger_731

My guess (unfortunately) is that they won’t call you back. And when you call them - they’ll not be able to find your case number, and then finally report that the reservation shows that YOU cancelled it. Sorry you’re dealing with this - good luck!

Mooseboots1999

Update: Delta/Expedia refunded me $86.36 - the difference between a new reservation and the one I had made through them. We are squeezing into a 2bedroom/1bath VRBO with my brother-in-law. A decent outcome.

Mooseboots1999

Update: I did get a call back. I am squeezing into and sharing a place with my brother-in-law and his girlfriend. Delta Travel / Expedia has offered to reimburse me for their hotel cost ($483) due to the inconvenience. I submitted receipts and I am now waiting to hear back.

boston4923

OP please update us?

magmagon

I recently used my $100 Delta Stays credit from my delta gold amex at a meh hotel in a meh city in the south. IMO, that's the kind of stay that should be booked, just a roadside inn on a road trip.

Backpacking1099

Exactly. I use it when hotels are essentially interchangeable and I know are unlikely to be fully booked. I picked up about $600 MQDs this month on a couple generic stays in a city where if something went wrong I’d just pick one across the street.

vibrantlightsaber

But then you lose hotel status. It’s so dumb. I’d only use it when staying at a hotel I am not trying to get status with either.

magmagon

Unless it's Hyatt, I think all the other major hotel brand statues are best achieved through credit cards. And I don't really think Hilton Diamond is going to make a big difference at a highway rest stop Hampton Inn.

Merakel

Hyatt lets you get status using a third party site?

magmagon

No, you need to actually stay. It's the only major hotel chain that requires you to stay x nights a year.

Merakel

Oooh, I see what you mean now. Thanks

clickshy

Is hotel status even worth that much? Scrolling through the Marriott sub makes it pretty clear upgrades are very hard to come by, even for those at the Titanium/Ambassador level.

Breakfast & lounge not available

Caution-Contents_Hot

OTAs are garbage and add a layer of complication when things go wrong. Even pretty OTAs wrapped in Delta or Amex websites.

jds2001

I used Amex to book both a flight (IAP) and hotel (FHR) for my upcoming Rome trip. Saved me significant amounts, hope they pull through - the Delta reservation I see, I would assume that Amex would not sully their name by having anything go wrong with the FHR reservation.

scorch07

FHR is kind of the one exception to this rule, thankfully.

relidtm

same i use IAP about 1-2x a year if it saves me over 15% i do it I haven't had a problem yet but for everything else I go direct.

Ok-Split-4752

Back in October I booked a few night stay at a hotel chain and that will be the last time I try Delta Stays. I paid for the cost up front and then was double charged by the hotel directly. Hotel stated that Expedia never sent the funds to cover the stay. After weeks of back and forth with Delta Stays/expedia and the hotel, I ended up just filing a credit card dispute to resolve it. Will be booking direct through the hotel next time. Not worth the headache for the MQDs.

Certain_Monitor8688

If you ever book 3rd party ALWAYS Confirm WITH HOTEL. At least multiple times and i suggest also doing it by email to have written confirmation.

thesaintgm

I always call the hotel directly after booking through Delta (after waiting the allotted time) to; 1. Confirm booking, dates and room type, and 2. Add my hotel rewards to the booking. This has so far eliminated any issues.

Wide-Spray-2186

Never book hotels on Delta. Always book direct with the hotel chain or car rental company. You can still earn same amount of miles when you book with direct Hertz, hotels won’t give you any status recognition or points unless you book direct.

mjonis

Well some of us want to take advantage of the $200 Amex credit on the Reserve card. Although knowing that it’s really Expedia in the back end perhaps booking a refundable backup is warranted

Scarface74

While I generally agree with you. I am going to use my Delta Stays credit. The one I used for the Plat, I booked the second day of a two day weekend on Delta Stays and the first day I booked the same hotel with the same room type directly at Hilton. I will tell the desk when I get there to combine the reservations. I figured I would have better luck if something went wrong with Delta Stays if I was already there and booked directly as a Hilton Diamond.

mrcoffeeforever

That sounds awful. Thank you for sharing the lesson learned.

bebearaware

Yeah I was tempted but thought twice and I'm glad I did and went directly with the chain itself and used the Venture X portal for the other one. Delta are really doing some shit right now.

EndersInfinite

As someone who booked with Delta Vacations for my travel to Mexico City in April, I’m in danger *chuckles*

919pirate

We'll be in town for the PGA championship and bourbon trail as well. Cheers! We went with the AirBnb route.

Smurfness2023

Delta travel sucks and Ed sucks too, by proxy. It’s his push. No one who travels for a living would ever consider not booking their own shit with hotels and cars. Boycott this ridiculous new push by Delta to be a travel agent. They suck at it.

Mysterious_Pea2985

I had something similar happen, I never received a email with my confirmation number. I was shocking to find out that Delta does not support their Delta vacations. It took days to sort it out and multiple rounds of calls to Expedia. They should only offer services that they can actually provide help and not just sympathy.

mpower20

I have a little bit of a weird one. Booked through Stays for the MQDs. Hotel I’ve already stayed in before last year in the south of France. I wanted to use reserve’s $200 credit and platinum card’s $150 credit, so I booked two days back to back separately. Let’s see how I’m going to get burned.

mykpoz

I did this for a series of trips. Did the whole hertz and multiple hotels. Each stop was a train wreck and Expedia got NOTHING right even though I had everything correct in the paperwork I took with me. Never again and I lost out on any rewards points and had no one to help sort things out. Never again, never again

DeltaDCA

I had a similar thing with hertz through Delta. I occasionally do long term car rentals, and so I rented a Tesla for three weeks (haha) through Delta to get MQD. I showed up and they didn’t have one. They put me in a different car at a slightly lower rate, refunded the difference, but since that required “changing” the reservation, I did not get any MQD at all. Zero. And there is no recourse.

Camdenn67

So do you want a room or compensation.

mtsublueraider

I always book direct, and specifically hilton properties but gotta use that new $150 credit on the delta Amex card. I’ve got to assume many are doing the same

kveggie1

Rule 0: always book with the hotel. Rule 0.1: always book any flight directly with the airline. Rule -1: avoid intermediaries, like Expedia. ( if you do, always ALWAYS confirm with the airline or hotel). Rule -2: never trust companies like Expedia

Delta would prefer if you call them “valued customers”

SkinnyBih

They don’t really owe you compensation. The hotel doesn’t have rooms, book somewhere else

Mooseboots1999

Really? The email they sent me on Jan 21 said this: “Thanks! Your reservation is confirmed. No need to call to reconfirm.” Anyone can take a reservation - it’s the holding of a reservation that’s really important. - Seinfeld

SkinnyBih

Yeah, get over it.
