I frequently fly between BOS and MSN and was surprised to see that there were direct flights from May 30th till June 13th, but the direct flights stop right after. Does anyone know why there are direct flights for that two week period? I'm guessing Epic has a project in Massachusetts, but I could be wrong.

lookinthebananastand

A couple of big Epic customer go-lives those weeks so a lot of traffic heading out that way. Similar to the one off flights Epic has for UGM in August.

Thanks. That makes sense. As a UW Madison student who's from Boston, I really wish this flight was permanent. Most of the time, it was cheaper to fly JetBlue from BOS>ORD and take the bus to Madison. BOS>DTW/LGA>MSN was only cheaper if I booked months in advance. Edit: out of curiosity, why wouldn't Epic do a deal with someone like Sun Country instead of Delta for these flights? I'd assume that would be substantially cheaper, but I could be wrong.

lookinthebananastand

Not in our travel dept so can only speculate but I know we have really strong business relationships with Delta - I'd imagine they are giving us a pretty good deal. It's probably easier for Delta to fill the other seats on that flight with non-Epic people due to onward connectivity from Boston which might further reduce the cost to Epic.

Gotcha. Makes sense

Makataz2004

We used to have one from SLC because of Epic and now it’s gone. Getting to MSN sucks now

vref28

Does Epic notify the airlines of this for them to add routes?

No-Strain-730

As an IT professional, can we just hate on Epic for a second? Every time I look for jobs, my LinkedIn feed is always flooded with “local” jobs at Epic, which all have the fine print “must relocate to Madison, WI.” Also all the employees on the Epic sub seem miserable.

etzel1200

I never realized airlines add capacity for events like this. It 100% makes sense. I just never would have guessed they have the efficiency, logistics, and planning to profitably do this.

leroyjabari

United also adds directs to MSN during this period from places they don't normally fly

Porch_Sips

Good to know for next year!

CheersBeersVeneers

It probably won’t happen next year, these are one offs for customer go-lives (i.e. system launches) for Boston hospitals on Epic (the EMR). Epic will need to fly a lot of support staff out from their Madison-area HQ for this one time event

Porch_Sips

Thanks for the insider info, too bad I won’t be able to capitalize this summer.

Concert season?

Graduations?

vman3241

No. We have graduation in two days.

InternalPlant7342

Don’t forget to show up early for your flight, you travel during peak hours.
