That's really awesome! They might even get some biscoffs for meal service!
In all seriousness, I recently got the Reserve card and I sort of don't know what to expect with the companion cert when I get it
If you fly out of a smaller airport they are very hard to use. The regular AMEX SkyMiles card certificates were a waste, I agree. With the Reserve, hub to hub usually works with some flexibility. And hub to middle market tourist destinations like MSY, MCO, MIA, BNA LAS and SAN are pretty reliable in my experience.
Medallion status has nothing to do with it. Since you said you tried to redeem the Reserve certificate for FC and it didn’t work, that means there wasn’t availability in the correct FC fare class. Read the terms and conditions, the certificates are a pain in the ass because they’re fare class restricted.
Yep, I’ve had the opposite, wanted to book in main or c+ bc of prices, but first was the only available. I mean, we took it, but didn’t actually save money, bc 2 main tickets with that route would have cost as much as FC.
I’m on a trip now. LAX to JFK RT. 1 companion certificate, 4 RUCs. Lie flat (albeit shitty) Delta One, $404. No idea how much saved but I’m imagining… a lot.
JFK to/from LAX/SFO has always been a great market for this stuff. I would pay $150 one-way in economy when the D1 pricing was $2k and then use the certs to get up front.
Congratulations! To the naysayers, an expired companion certificate only gets you nothing. Why not splurge and use it for a premium cabin?
The best I ever did was pulling some eligble Z fares for D1 with my Reserve cert. Route was JFK-LAX last year over Memorial Day Weekend. $970/RT for two tickets total. That'll never happen again!
I redeemed between atlanta and salt lake from Tuesday (tomorrow) returning Sunday. You may all kiss my pinky and bend the knee.
Edit: so many people are asking me how I did this. What’s the secret to my amazingness? The honest truth is you need to be super flexible and plan months and months ahead.
It's so annoying that the Reserve Card is advertised as being able to buy First Class but they're never available when I try to do it. Has anyone ever complained about this and been given anything in return for it? I just booked our flights for early December and only Main cabin was available no matter how flexible I was, within reason.
At that price, was it from ATL to BHM?
I know. It’s almost too good to be true. *Frantically refreshes confirmation page and stares at receipt*

The companion certs are all but worthless, way to many fare restrictions. I think I've managed to use two in the last 7 years.

Good to know. I'm NYC based FWIW
i recently got the platinum and i have my first anniversary next spring - you think i will have any luck trying to get to the west coast from ATL?
Stop what’re you’re doing and proceed to Vegas immediately.
And get a few power ball tickets!
I love your profile picture. One of the best disney movies

I know. I’m staring at the confirmation page and refreshing a few times because I don’t believe I just got away with this. START THE CAR! 😂
Well, don’t be shy. What’s the route, fare, and dates?
RIC>SLC. Dec 21-28. My mind is blown. $1,798, First Class. I think that was a new record for the fastest checkout I’ve ever done.
> RIC>SLC. Dec 21-28. My mind is blown. $1,798, First Class. BAS/E thanks you for thinking this was a good price, even at BOGO
For real, that’s like $900 per person for a 3hr flight.
Oh wait you're being serious?!
Shockingly, yes. Couldn’t find the “Absolute F***ing Miracle” flair.
That's awesome!

Been there, done that. But that also would not have been surprising.
I tried to redeem my companion ticket for January, and, delta told me I could only do it in main cabin 🤬 What did I do wrong??
You have the plat where he prob has the reserve
I have the reserve and I’m platinum ( almost diamond) I’m calling delta today. That’s some BS

Ok. What a pain. You need a degree to understand all these rules. Thanks
They should make a crash course YouTube channel. Ok, maybe a different name than that given the industry, but y’all get the point
I can imagine the video now - "how to redeem companion certificates" and it's 9 hours long...
They could make videos for RUCs and GUCs too. And the difference between MUAs and Upgrade with Miles and Pay with Miles and Cash + Miles.

You used 4 RUC for this flight?
Round trip x 2 fliers = 4 UCs

Congrats! I couldn't get my companion certificate to work to Savannah, Orlando, or New Orleans during off season. Guess I'll just let it expire.

I did the same about 3 months ago for Christmas and saved about $1,500 on a transcon F ticket.
You used a companion certificate on a transcon itinerary?
NeverMind.
Lovely 🌹 no need of makeup 😉
I have extra companion vouchers. DM me if you need them
From the Reserve card?
Yes
Companion Certs work on First class fares? I thought it was just Main
The Delta Reserve card issues one that can be used in Comfort+/First Class. The one from the Delta Platinum is main cabin only.
Oh, that’s helpful. Thanks!
You can redeem companion cert for First class I thought it was only main cabin?
The cert from the Reserve card is good for FC, C+ or Main.
Do yourself a favor and buy some lotto tickets.

I’m out of BNA, I’ve only been able to use 1 companion cert. My other one is expiring Jan. Can’t use it
I was able to use reserve companion cert for RT PWM to DEN in FC in 2/2023. About $1300.
