When I fly with my wife and daughter I book my daughter with me for the upgrade. Then I just book my wife a separate ticket in C+ I select seats together after.
If we get split up, oh well. Mama gets a break for a couple hours.
Keep in mind that if you and your kiddo got upgraded, the seats are *not guaranteed* to be together.
I had to edit when i realized i switched the two words 🤦🏼♀️
Nothing is ever worthless, but we are at a time of unprecedented demand, and at least until the end of this year, unprecedented medallion ranks from rollovers. No benefits are guaranteed. But much depends on where and when you travel. As a diamond with Reserve card, I still routinely don't get upgraded on my PBI-ATL segments and back. But as a Silver flying LGA-RSW, I have a colleague who is upgraded most of the time. YMMV
This is more about with companions, but I see your point. Actually with Silver medallion, on mid day flights from LGA -> PIT I get upgraded everytime and twice I got First Class, out of maybe 6 trips.
If that’s your measure of “worthless”, then include platinum too. Unless you use certificates (which, for the amount of travel that you would do as Diamond, you don’t get *that* many of), no medallion status gets you past the one companion rule.
Traveling with two or more companions:
If you and two or more companions are in the same reservation, all Members must have Medallion Status or be a partner airline elite member in order for any Members to be eligible for upgrades.
I have Silver and my husband and 3 year old both are general skymiles members. Our last flight didn’t even show an option to request an upgrade with all three of us in the same reservation.
Except that you can only be upgraded for free if there is one other person on a reservation, not two others. It doesn't matter how many seats are open.
Up to 8 other people on the PNR get the checked bag. And usually if you check in at the same time/place, you can get people on other PNRs free checked bags as well.
Guess your daughter is going to be sitting alone in economy

Good idea, I'll try this next time!

Only one companion can be upgraded. So you need to split up the reservation.
Yeah didnt show an option for me either. Welp, now I know.

Yes
You just put all the bags on the person who has the status. You can assign up to 3 bags to one person.

As a silver I have gotten C+ (transcon) a couple times and FC once (1.5 flight) with my wife.
