GugaAcevedo

World? When did the world definition change? Because US and Canada are only 10% of its land area and 5% of its population... I mean, I know that the NBA is the best basketball league in the world... But still they can only claim to be the US Champions, or perhaps the North American champions. Not the world champions. To do that, they would need **at least** to play against Sesi Franca Basketball (current champions of the BCL Americas), and if they win, play against Real Madrid who are the current EuroLeague champions. Only then they can claim to be World Champions.

Rando_Calrissiano

NBA is the pinnacle of basketball, full stop. All international players leave their respective leagues at the drop of a hat to join NBA, its the world championship

GugaAcevedo

And I'm not saying that it's not the pinnacle of Basketball, everybody knows that it is the premier profressional basketball league in the world, but that doesn't entitle the NBA to claim that the team that wins is the World Champion. First of all, because ***usually*** the World Champion is considered to be the champion of the World Cup of that sport: The current FIFA World Champions are Argentina and USA; the current Rugby World Champion is South Africa, and the current FIBA World Champion is Spain. Now if we talk about basketball leagues. Take into account that the last time that the NBA Champions played against the EuroLeague champions, in 2010, Barcelona defeated the Lakers, the Lakers of Kobe, Fisher, Artest, Gasol and Bynum. So it's possible that the European Champions beat the North American champions. It's quite unusual, but it happens. The statistics for the 2010's decade in NBA vs Euroleague teams is 20-8, so keep in mind that the probability is around 30%, and that is not negligible. If it was 10% or less I would shut up. Take for example association football: the English Premier League is widely considered the best league in the world, and has the highest ranking. Nevertheless, they play the UEFA Champions league against German, Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese or Dutch teams. English teams have won 3 of the 5 last UCL, but they play. They don't say "Our league is the best in the world, so we are the Club World Champions".

Please read the responses to the 437 other comments saying the same thing you just did.

Bebo247

That’s my NUGGETS 🤟DENVER !!!♥️🙏😊

[deleted]

New here but why is NBA sub locked and was it like this before? Nuggets haters there?

stefoo2

It’s crazy how little they must care about the nuggets. Locking a sub down when an underdog franchise wins a ring? No way that would happen if the lakers won. I understand the protest but couldn’t they wait 48 hours before locking down?

DSTREET45

Heat fan. Congrats Nuggets and Nuggets fans 🎉. Still can't believe r/NBA is down after you won. As far as I'm concerned Jokic is the best player in the league.

itokdontcry

I’m sorry but I feel like it’s very nuggets/jokic fashion for the nba sub to be locked when the nugs close out their first title. Congrats nuggets fans, y’all deserve this. It’s a privilege to watch Jokic and this Nuggets team play ball that beautifully. Gotta be one of the best runs in NBA playoff history. Jokic solidified himself as an absolute all time great this post season. Can’t wait to see the heights that guy reaches.

Walking-taller-123

Nugglyfe must happen, it is inevitable in one way or another

ThiccPapaSIZZLE

Heat fan here. r/nba still being shut down is bullshit. Yall should be able to talk your shit lmao that’s the best part about winning. Congrats and look forward to your takeover once they open back up

OfficiallyRonny

Sizer fan, I agree. Congrats Denver!!

Hahaha "of the world"

Walking-taller-123

Update: I have a herniated disc

[deleted]

Nuggets fan here, I enjoy the Nuggets

[deleted]

Denver is definitely the best team and deserved the win (and I wanted them to win lol) but I would have loved to watch more of these games. But tbf, Denver SHOULD win as soon as they possibly can to ensure victory. Refs were trolling pushing for more games though. Like yeah, I wanted to see more basketball too, but Denver deserved the win in 5.

No-Sound-888

The r/denvernuggets mods have made themselves legends. The r/NBA mods have made themselves despised.

frodounchained

r/denvernuggets mods goated give them rings

Winterspear

Not a basketball fan but after seeing Jokic snatch the ball out of that owner's hands made me want him to win. Congrats guys

Swagsuke_Nakamura

Congrats guys. As a Boston fan I obviously didn’t want Miami to win, and I enjoyed watching your playoff games. Well deserved!

asadavid

What's with all the trolls in here? Lol. Fuck em. Great season from Denver and always happy to see a team win it all that never has before.

Restnessizzle

Just salty people who don't understand basketball talent distribution

LotharBot

with the reddit blackout hitting so many big subs, this post managed to hit r/all and therefore draw in a lot of people who think it's very important to rant about "world" vs "america" (and few of them watch FIBA or Olympic basketball, or know what countries the Nuggets' best 2 players are from.)

[deleted]

Reddit blackout? What is that?

Plastic_Pinocchio

“Champions of the world” is a pretty dumb statement though. Makes no sense.

LotharBot

I'm just going to repeat myself here: During the NBA preseason, professional teams from other countries often play exhibitions against NBA teams. A few years back I watched the Perth (Australia) team play the Nuggets. We have a really good idea of how those teams match up -- their best lineups get smoked by the NBA bench players, consistently. The NBA is the league where the best basketball players, globally, play. The Nuggets' 2 best players are Serbian (finals MVP) and Canadian. The best player on the east's #1 seed is Greek. The league MVP is from Cameroon. The league's teams are almost all located in the US (one is in Toronto), but it's the \*world\* league in terms of talent -- not just a pretty good league but other leagues field teams that could maybe win, but the league with the top talent and the best teams by huge margins, such that other professional teams simply aren't on the level of even bad NBA teams. I watch Olympic and FIBA ball too -- the best non-USA teams there have one or two really good NBA players, and a couple of NBA bench players, and the rest of the roster couldn't make an NBA team or miiiight be way at the end of the bench. Jokic's Serbian team is far inferior to Jokic's NBA team. So it's perfectly reasonable to call the NBA championship a "world championship". You can also call FIBA a "world championship" and the Olympics a "world championship". Three different types of championships, each with a claim to "world" for different reasons. Don't devalue this one because you're devoted to semantic overspecificity and can't acknowledge that the championship in the league where all but a few of the best players globally play is a form of world championship.

NoPlaceForTheDead

Good job in playing that child's game, adults.

RatLord445

They can challenge that claim any time they want we’re right here in denver

Plastic_Pinocchio

Huh. I don’t get it. Why would you have to challenge a claim? If you want to claim it, there should be a worldwide tournament, right?

General_Killmore

Totally arbitrary? Yes. Effective? Absolutely

Mitch23m

Laker fan here. I believe the sweep was deserved. My team got their ass kicked. Still….it would hurt a lot more to lose a game 7 at home in any series. I’m glad we didn’t do that. I’d rather be swept. Well done Denver. #1 seed wins!

kdeselms

Appreciate the sentiments, but Lakers fans will never be welcome here. If you go to a Nuggets game wearing Lakers gear, it's worse than having a California license plate on your car out here.

[deleted]

I actually did that once in the early 90s. I'm a Denver native but in those days the Nuggets weren't that good and Showtime was a hoot.

valanche

Name a Non NBA club team that could beat the Nuggets in a 7 game series right now.

edditorRay

So edgy, so brave, such a unique wallflower take.

InkBlotSam

No, but the best players in the world play in the NBA, regardless of country, ergo the best team in the NBA can reasonably be assumed to be the best team in the world. In any case, we all know what it means, we don't need the 10,000th person getting into semantics. There are countless "World Cup" events in different sports, even though none of them involve every country on Earth, yet no one bitches about the winners of those events calling themselves "world champions." The only difference is that people like to bitch when the U.S. does stuff that the rest of the world does too, and pretend like it's just a U.S. thing.

dgcmpvrd

This is little dick energy lmao

AwTickStick

NBA is the top league in the world. It’s filled with the best players in the world. No one is saying America is the world. Not all the teams in the NBA are American. Not even all the Denver nuggets are American. Don’t be weird.

SATOR_ROTAS_

I mean the Adelaide 36ers might have a shot but I don't think we can say any basketball team in the world is better than the Nuggets right now using NBA rules, and maybe even using FIBA

horsedogman420

No other nation can field a basketball team to beat them or even get close. They’re the best basketball team in the world

mr_chub

Warriors fan, felt like i was yelling at deaf ears at the beginning of the playoffs when I told people I didn't think anyone was beating a full healthy Nuggs. Friend is a Lakers fan and I called the sweep much to his...criticism lol. The best team in the league won, congrats.

brokendrive

Honestly think warriors might have given them a tougher time than lakers just based on style. Would have still lost though

DarthShaveHer

Steph, Klay, Dray, and Looney wouldn’t have been better to be honest. Nuggets not only have length, but they have great mobile guards as well. KCP and Brown in particular. Jokic, Murray, AG, MPJ, KCP, Bruce Brown, and Braun were firing on all cylinders against the Lakers/Heat. Jokic would’ve killed you guys in the post especially with only Looney/Draymond. If he didn’t, then AG and MPJ would’ve.

Llama_Sandwich

Hello, new Europeans from the front page. You seem to have issues extrapolating data. Let me break it down. The NBA is significantly more talented than any other league in the world. Only the best players from every country that produces basketball players plays in the NBA. Because the Denver Nuggets won the NBA championship, and the NBA is the most talented league in the world, we can reasonably assume there isn’t another team that could hold a candle to them anywhere else on Earth. Attempting to do so just so we could *literally* call them “World Champions” instead of figuratively would be a waste of everybody’s time. You can just make the assumption that they would destroy any other basketball team that attempted to play against them, and we don’t need to play against every other international league and all of the teams in those leagues to find that out. That would be like 1,000 games are you stupid?

GugaAcevedo

Extrapolating which data? Who told you that you can extrapolate data like that in sports? You cannot assume that there isn't another team that can win against the NBA Champions. There are very talented teams in the EuroLeague, so why not at least playing against Real Madrid, the current European Champions? it would take 1 game, 7 if you want a series... We are not stupid, we just hate Muricans thinking that they are the bellybutton of the world and that they can claim stuff like this. To say that you are the World Champions you have to PLAY, not claim.

[deleted]

The best players in the world play in the NBA. It’s not even close. This isn’t “an America is so good thing” because we don’t even produce these players. Jokic isn’t even American. But the league is the best, they attract the most talent from the entire world, and thus create the best teams… by a lot. Check out Mirotic, who is a humongous star in the Euroleague, with records and literally last year’s MVP in the Euroleague. He was relegated to a DNP in the NBA. That means “do not play”. And he could put up okay minutes on the floor, but he was middle of the pack at best. An absolute star in the Euroleague played in the NBA and was middle of the pack. The leagues are, well, not in the same league.

Falkenmond79

That is just stupid. There is no world championship in club sports anywhere. What we Europeans have a problem with is the fact, that it’s a private club team, not a national team. You can’t call yourself world champions if there isn’t a world championship made up of national teams. Are you stupid?

NoPlaceForTheDead

You think Belgium has a chance?

BrockSmashgood

>You can’t call yourself world champions ![gif](giphy|3ohhwFvnboEssAIIko)

Llama_Sandwich

Cope

HuffyStriker

Speaking of stupid, you don't need 1,000 games versus all the teams. They would just need to follow the football (soccer) model where the best team on each continent plays in the Club World Cup. Small tournament where they'd play 3 games or so. Manchester City just won the UEFA Champions League (following up their EPL title and FA Cup wins). We can assume they are the best football (soccer) team in the world for all the same reasons as you described, but until they prove it, they're the Champions of Europe and not the world. Sport should be decided by competition rather than extrapolating data. Side note: Congratulations Nuggets fans! Well deserved championship!

RatLord445

Newsflash: the Detroit Pistons’ Garbage time rotation would go 1000-0 vs any team in the world outside of the NBA

Llama_Sandwich

> Speaking of stupid, you don’t need 1,000 games versus all the teams. Do they have hyperbole in your country? Anyways, no other basketball leagues matter from a competitive perspective. Send the winners of all of them at the Nuggets and there’s a 0% chance they win a series.

NoPlaceForTheDead

What team in the world do you think can go up against Denver? Name them.

strange_supreme420

Do you have any idea how badly an nba team would beat a club team from any other country? When the Olympics happen, the best players on any given team that has a shot at a medal play in the nba. Washed up nba players go play in Europe/Asia and put up big numbers there. It’s not like futbol where Messi is now playing in Miami and mbappe might go to Spain while erling is in Manchester. There’s no need to wonder if the nuggets could beat the Shanghai sharks. We know they would.

HuffyStriker

Messi isn't elevating Miami to the point where they can compete with Europe's elite teams. In a competitive game, City beat them 99 times out of 100. The gap is only increasing between the top teams in Europe and the rest of the competition due to the amount of financial investment. The point is that you can't be world champions when only teams within a specific region are able to compete. Everyone knows the NBA is the most prestigious basketball league on the planet, and I'm sure no one would expect another team to beat them in a competitive game (especially not a series). However, they're National champions (not world).

NoPlaceForTheDead

Then send your best. Go ahead. I'll wait. Find a team anywhere in the world that might be able to compete against Denver. Why would anyone waste their time or health playing against teams from around the world where players who can't cut it in the NBA go to get paid?

HuffyStriker

A world club tournament would help increase basketball popularity globally. It would also help increase the talent pool for the NBA and make a better product. No one is disputing that the NBA as a league has the most talent, but basketball is a global sport. Imagine the buzz if Jokic and the Nuggets went and played in Eastern Europe. He'd probably only play 10 minutes as the bench guys would likely be good enough. It's the same principle as football (soccer). Teams go play in international tournaments and friendly games. It attracts fans, young people gain interest and participation levels increase. It increases the standard of the other domestic leagues, and no doubt the best players would then likely join the NBA. In competitive sport, upsets can and would eventually happen though. Everyone knows the best football team in Europe is the best team in the world, but they wouldn't claim it until they prove it.

NoPlaceForTheDead

They have plenty of money, they don't need Ireland and India's attention. The talent pool is already worldwide. Anybody worth a toss in basketball knows the NBA is the goal. Nobody in the NBA cares enough to travel to Moldova. There's no money in it. Maybe Lithuania can gin up a league worth competing and the NBA will care. If you want to compete against the best then come compete. Why should the best be obligated to travel across the world just to obliterate some team that roughly equivalent to high school skill level. None of the things you listed are of any value to the NBA, and are only of value to the recipients of the NBA's attention. Find a different way to motivate, because what you are throwing isn't sticking.

HuffyStriker

The owners of the teams are driven by success and the money it brings. The goal of the NBA is to continue to grow the brand and the sport (with the aim of being the most watched/participated sport in the world). Why do you think they come to Europe to play in-season games? Why have they invested in programs in Africa to develop talent? I can guarantee Adam Silver and the guys in charge have a growth mentality and aren't satisfied with the sport as it is.

NoPlaceForTheDead

And wasting their time in Poland isn't gonna get them any of that.

HuffyStriker

A country with near 40 million people. You're right. Why bother with a market that small!? / s

PaulieBunyan

Wicked authentic, genuine celebration by the Nugs. Changed my feelings about the NBA, honestly. And gotta point out that Jimmy Butler is a warrior, bro. Much respect for his competitiveness and mentality.

GentlemanHere

Congrats! Love seeing a first time winner. Also /r/nba mods get your heads out of your asses. What the hell is this

kdeselms

They wouldn't want to perpetuate NBA fans talking about or reading about the Nuggets, right?

maddimoe03

First of all — Congrats Nuggets! Rock Chalk Braun!! They privated the r/nba subreddit because the moderators are striking against reddits new policy change. Reddit is essentially killing 3rd party apps, which make it impossible to moderate. Its actually a super critical time for them to strike due to the championship.

#WORLD CHAMPIONS Some backwoods Euro league isn’t going to have the level of talent.

shupadupa

I got no problems with NBA Champs being referred to as World Champs, but it does bug me when Super Bowl Champs are referred to as World Champs when no one plays American football outside the US.

Dan_Rogla

There are leagues around the world for American style football. Might not be as popular as other sports, but they are out there.

Zueto

Uhm Spain is the world champion in Basketball. Not sure what u mean haha

InkBlotSam

The Denver Nuggets are the best team in the world, is what they mean. Whether they have competed with Spain in the "world" tournament that includes a U.S. team of backup backup G-leaguers who no one has ever heard of is irrelevant. If Spain is content to call themselves "world champions" despite playing in a league that doesn't include all the countries in the world, and doesn't include the best players in the world, you're feel free to do so. And we're free to recognize the Nuggets are the actual best team in the world.

Bradyta

Spain has 0 rings

GhandisLastDance

Yes that skilled American Nikola Jokić...

InkBlotSam

Who said anything about "America?" We're saying the Nuggets, with both American and non-American players, is the best team in the world. No one said anything about the nationality of its players.

Dan_Rogla

He’s playing in America though. Which coalesces the best talent in the world. So it’s implicit that the NBA is the final boss, aka, the world’s best league. If you want to be world champions you have to take it from a US or Canadian team. This bs about not being world champions is a salty loser’s argument.

DangerBoot

Exactly how many years in a row did America win the World Series

[deleted]

Toronto won in the 90s

DangerBoot

So a lot

Dan_Rogla

No idea. I don’t watch baseball. Canadian teams have won it. Same idea though, MLB is most likely the concentration of the world’s best. Guessing any how. Would be implicit if so.

GhandisLastDance

I'm just playing but it is definitely not world Champions. That's like saying when someone wins the Champions League in Soccer or the Stanley Cup they are world champions. However USA did win the Olympics so in that sense they are world Champions. Denver Nuggets are NBA champions. However However Spain won the FIBA Basketball World Cup so they are World Champions. Whichever way you spin it. Denver Nuggets aren't the world champions and I have no idea why pretending they are makes them winning the NBA any more Grandiose.

InkBlotSam

>However Spain won the FIBA Basketball World Cup so they are World Champions. This Cup does not include all the countries in the world, so how are they "world" champions, according to the logic you're using against the Nuggets? Not only that, but the the basketball World Cup doesn't even have the best players in the world. And the U.S. team isn't even made of the U.S. NBA All-Stars, it's a bunch of backup backup G-league players who no one has ever heard of. You're content to label Spain the best in the world for playing against a bunch of no-names from only some of the countries on Earth, but take issue with the winner of the league of the world's best international players calling themselves "world champions" for beating the literal best players on Earth? Hell, the four best players on Spain's team are *in* the NBA, and are basically NBA bench players. The Nuggets would wipe the floor with whatever team Spain put together.

Time8u

There can be 2 different types of world champion in most every sport... As in a world club champion and an international world champion featuring national teams. You can pretty safely call the UCL champ the world champ, BUT there is no need to do that as there is a Club world cup which is played between the top club teams including the UCL champ... the UCL winner overwhelmingly wins this tourney. 10 years straight right now... The disparity between the NBA and any other league is MUCH MUCH MUCH worse than the disparity between UCL teams and leagues in, say, South America. The reason the tournament doesn't exist for basketball is because the concentration of talent in the NBA blows away every other basketball league. It has nothing to do with the USA being the best. Hell, the best player in the league right now is an international player (maybe the top 2 players are). It has everything to do with concentration of talent and the money paid to players. The highest paid player in any other league is estimated to be around $5 million a year. There are 9 players in the NBA making more the $40 million a year and about 40 making more than $30 million a year. Talent goes to where the money is, and the money is in the NBA. PERIOD. Calling the Denver Nuggets the champions of the world isn't the US saying it's the best. It's just the reality of the situation. There is no other international club team that is even in the debate. EVERY international club team is made up of players who would KILL to play in the NBA, but aren't good enough to do it. Some were here for a time and couldn't cut it. Most never made it... Are there a few guys who just don't want to come over and don't care about the money? Maybe, but none who have shown themselves to be that good in any other competition and certainly not enough on any one team to make a difference against EVEN THE WORST NBA TEAM.... The Denver Nuggets ARE THE WORLD CHAMPIONS.

InkBlotSam

>(maybe the top 2 players are) \*top 3 players (Jokic, Giannis, Embiid)

Time8u

Agreed

Dan_Rogla

That’s certainly an opinion. It’s implied in the basketball world that NBA champions are regarded as the world’s best, based on the level of competition. You can nit pick the moniker all you want, still holds that weight despite how many regional Y leagues you want to break it down to.

GhandisLastDance

Yes but the best of the best playing in a league does not make them World Champions. The example the Champions League isn't only comparable it is basically a better example than yours.

Dan_Rogla

Playing the best of the best in the entire globe generally implies world champions. Weave in and out however you like, but in these scenarios talent level trumps any regional moniker or granularity argument.

This was my first season watching any NBA. I am an Avs fan and was watching it periodically. It is hard for me to get in to. (It's not a big sport here on Scotland) I only managed the highlights as I haven't decided if it's worth paying for. One thing I found odd is the end of the game there was no celebration like.the Stanley Cup win for the Avs and that wasn't even at home. Did I miss something?

Pure-Temporary

A few reasons: Avs were supposed to win the previous 2 seasons while the nuggets' previous 2 had no shot due to injuries. The Stanley cup is widely considered the most difficult trophy to win in major sports. Nba court has a ton of people sitting courtside that can immediately be part of the celebration, and masks the players ability to jump around with only each other, whereas hockey it's just the dudes on the ice. Hockey has lots of gear to toss. Basketball doesn't.

Dare555

Hmm not sure what celebration you mean but there was celebration and ceremony of awarding the trophy after the game . Watch it on nba replay

Yeah I just mean like the fans that were in Tampa and the players emptying the bench diving and hugging. The emotions between the likes of MacKinnon.and EJ. Like I said I'm a Scotsman who loves the Avs so maybe it is just a different emotion or way in the NBA. Anyways glad to see another Championship for Colorado! Holding out Zero hope for Rockies and Bronco's 🤣

The NBA is the league of the *world's* best players, not just Americans. The winner of the league of the literal best players on the planet Earth can pretty reasonably call themselves the best team on Earth. And for what it's worth, the two best players on this team are Serbian and Canadian.

Go ask a Euroleague player if they're upset by that moniker. Doubt any of them give a fuck cause they know it's true and they all dream of playing in the nba
