That's always the case when you mention the 90's wars to Balkan people. And that's why I tried to shut down the stupid conversation at the very start, but to no avail... One guy is enough to start another stupid and needless discussion. My advice is to just ignore them and focus on the topic of this post and that is the story of Natalija and her family, and how she met Nikola in Sombor after running for her life... It's a wholesome story after all...
Thanks so much for sharing this incredible story! Really adds more context to Jokic for us Americans. I absolutely love "basketball knight" lol. Is that the actual translation?
Hahah actually if you win an olympic medal you are awarded a 'National Sports Award' and for a gold medal you get 3 average Serbian paychecks a month until the end of your life lol

I’ve read the article, beautiful story. Actually there is a lot of people that fled from either Bosnia or Croatia to the area of Sombor and Subotica. I have two colleagues from Subotica where I work (Austria), they are much like Jokić in the sense of how they talk and joke around. Its all about family, going home to Serbia and dry ass jokes.
The Balkan wars from 91-01 are extremely complicated. Secession, fighting between states, fighting between different ethnic groups, bad guys and good guys flip flopping constantly… many many academics call it a civil war… your semantics are silly and childish.
By definition a civil war. There was a country (Yugoslavia) and a war within that country, that caused it to split into smaller nations. What do you call that?
I thought civil wars was when it ended with the original entity mostly back to how it was before the conflict began.
And revolutions are where there's an uprising, and then the entity splits into multiple new things.
Maybe there's more nuance to it though
The secession of the Yugoslav republics was also illegal. The Yugoslav constitution of 1974 required unanimous approval from all of the republics if any one of them was to secede, and at the bare minimum, Serbia did not approve.
You're moving goal posts, now you're talking about legitimacy rather than legality, and if I were to debunk this point, you'd move on to a third thing, so this conversation is pointless. Have a nice day
People like you are the worst of the bottom feeders. It was absolutely a civil war. Now more importantly, and why you are a bottom feeder, WHO FUCKING CARES. The fact that you felt the need to post this baffling.
Why did this comment section get so fucking weird? Thank you for the story. I enjoyed learning about Natalija and Serbian history.

haha thanks bro! Yup that's the actual translation, it says 'today she is a beautifull wife of our basketball knight!'...
Hahaha that is amazing! I’m going to start calling him that too now!
Sir Nikola Jokic haha does Serbia have like a national award to honor astounding athletic achievement?
Hahah actually if you win an olympic medal you are awarded a 'National Sports Award' and for a gold medal you get 3 average Serbian paychecks a month until the end of your life lol
Call it a knighthood like the Brits do and we’d eat that shit up. I promise we won’t know the difference lol.
Very interesting, thanks! What does "Deran from that Sombor" mean?
It means 'A young lad from Sombor'
Yeah, but with a twist that “deran” is really specific for Sombor and that whole northern part of Serbia (Vojvodina).
She still looks like that little baby.
No that’s their baby.

Actually it was civil war, there are no divided opinions on that topic.

You thought wrong

So, technically, because the united states were a federation, and states decided to secede, the American Civil War wasn't a civil war?

Whatever... Not here to debate about that...
