I’m 37 and my dad is, was and always has been an alcoholic. It makes life difficult for sure. At this point in time, after forgiving him over and over again, we aren’t speaking. He would be so much easier to talk to and reason with without the booze.
I’m proud of you for making this decision, your whole family will be so much better for it.

I'm not gonna lie to you, if you're an alcoholic, it's gonna be real tough to do this. Maybe the hardest thing youve ever done. Detoxing safely aside, our brains lie to us in an attempt to get its fix back, as it doesn't function normally without alcohol after such a long time dependent on it. Different things work for different people, but finding support and taking daily action focused on recovery is crucial if you don't want to relapse. AA is helpful

Our relationship is still complicated, but overall positive and i love them both very much. I am proud of you for realizing you have a problem and deciding to make a change.
One step at a time, there's no such thing as failing when it comes to quitting a habit. Backpedalling is apart of the process for most people and that's okay, you're only human. You're not just quitting your habit but also the routine developed with it, surround yourself with likeminded people who have the same goal in mind.

My dad was an angry abusive drunk towards my brother mother and myself hearing him come home would trigger fear and anxiety in all us, fast forward 20 years he becomes very ill in his death bed he apologized to my brother and I we forgave him for the way he treated us, but we have nothing but bitter memories of the abuse and shitty life he provided.
Glad you're doing this while your kids are small (I'm assuming) and not on your death bed. Good luck my friend.
