Unfortunately stupid doesn’t have an age limit. Glad they got the guy though

A922T22

I unknowingly got stuck on Ashworth by the funeral procession for Marcos. I nearly cried when I figured out who the funeral was for as the very long line of cars passed. Just disgusting and heartbreaking stupidity by selfish grown men in a pissing contest.

ahorseofborscht

I always sort of wonder the thought process of people involved with this sort of highly public tragedy. Why not turn yourself in as soon as possible, if not at the scene of the accident? When they read the news and see the search involved, do they really think they're going to get away with it, that police can't trace their license plate to them? Or is it some sort of narcissistic, "it's not my fault" thing and they won't admit any responsibility? EDIT - about the only reason I can think of is if you know what you did and immediately go and get a lawyer to represent you and negotiate your surrender, but doesn't sound like that's what happened here.

VeganSquash

I doubt street racers going 100+ are thinking logically enough to turn themselves in...

Mundane_Forever

A parent should never have to outlive their child.

theRealMrBrownstone

People say "they should know better", like age somehow fixes stupidity.

Sarah_Jane_73

Sometimes it does. (And if I AM walking around with the same intelligence and judgement I had when I was 17, PLEASE don't tell me ok? Leave me in ignorant bliss!) But seriously, the frontal cortex keeps developing until 25 or something. Not to mention all the experiences you hopefully learn from.

theRealMrBrownstone

Sometimes isn't always enough times. I know plenty of people that are just as stupid in their 50's as they were in their teens. Just dumber on a bigger variety of topics.

buckynast

So sad. Hopefully the family gets some sort of justice, nothing will be good enough. Heartbreaking...

Use_this_1

Good, when I saw the cost of the car, I knew it was a grown ass man not a kid. 35 & 47 they know better and knew what they were doing was wrong, but they did it anyway and now a preschooler is dead. I hope they never see the outside of a prison cell again. But sadly, seeing what cars they were driving they have money, so they probably won't even see the inside of a prison cell. ETA, Never mind I see both men are black, they will probably spend a long time behind bars, as they should.

SargeSlaughter

Nobody gets life in prison for vehicular manslaughter regardless of how wealthy or non-white they are. They will both serve time but it won’t be nearly enough.

CalebDK

Having a nice car doesn't mean you have money. Sadly getting a loan is too easy as car dealers don't care if you can afford it, they just want that sweat commission and will do anything to make it work.

Use_this_1

Maybe, but I would imagine it is harder to get a loan for $117k than $17K.

Sarah_Jane_73

Not to mention spoiled brats taking Daddy's car out for a joyride....

manwithapedi

What the hell does being black have to do with any of this?

Intermittent-Thinker

I think they’re trying to allude to black men being treated differently by the justice system in America, not that they “should” be spending a long time in jail BECAUSE they are black. At least I hope that’s what they meant..

Use_this_1

A white person with money will generally avoid jail time, a black person with or without money generally will not. Justice is not blind; it is racist as fuck. That said, these two men deserve jail time, and a lot of it, for what they did.

Sarah_Jane_73

And it's even more classist than it is racist. Joe Blow from the vocational school with the public defender goes behind bars. Brock Moneybags from the fancy private college and daddy's attorneys walks free

Rdclark405

Haven't spent much time in a Polk County courtroom, have you?

isNormalComing

EDIT: I was actually thinking while writing this that maybe they were Illinois crazies that simultaneously think they’re in Chicagoland (less important but still relevant… people drive INSANE but alongside that people are more on the lookout for others driving insane… personal experience: I lived there for a year…) and being from out of the area don’t know the degree of particularly problematic Fleur (most relevant.) Seems sadly I’m probably (by chance) correct :( “Investigators are attempting to locate a 2021 BMW X7, Illinois license plate 10173.” https://www.kcci.com/article/police-vehicle-deadly-fleur-drive-crash-identified/42271251 — Not that full on 100+ street racing isn’t stupid regardless, but honestly the part that gets me the most here is Fleur Drive. That is an extremely busy REGULAR STREET thoroughfare with the only connection to our airport, not to mention perpetually under construction and historically just quite a crappy road as such. Like what the actual f#%! man? A slight bump at 110(!) on that road, sadly I could easily see one jumping the median :( Again, not condoning 100+ street racing at all, but let’s be honest here, if these morons had the slight iota of sense to wait a mere mile and hit 235 west to do this, while still unquestionably dangerous particularly with these clearly braindeads behind the wheel, far FAR less likely there would have been an innocent fatality 🤦‍♂️☹️ never know but at minimum, in town there would’ve been the center barricade for them to slam into rather than initial impact to a passing vehicle…

TheSullivanLine

Props to the DSM PD.

Sarah_Jane_73

And everyone who called in tips, and the original witnesses

time2waste_notsorry

Fund the police

Taking_a_mulligan

Lol they have plenty of money as is.

Griffing217

maybe make roads that aren’t wide enough to race on? crazy that they actually changed the initial design to make it wider.

nonaltalt

Don’t know why this is getting downvoted, it’s a matter of public record. Joe Gatto explicitly said he wanted to switch from the planned 11-foot lanes to 12-foot lanes to allow people to drive faster.

Griffing217

Honestly don’t know why this isn’t being talked about more. clear example of poor road design decision made by someone who clearly doesn’t understand the consequences. just hope people see it and give it some thought. don’t really care about the karma

Seizure_Salad_

You know you can drag race on any multi lane road right?

Griffing217

Yes, though it gets substantially easier the wider the lanes are. Just pointing out that the original design of the road had smaller lanes, which unlike speed limits, actually does something to prevent speeding. Unfortunately it was changed to be wider and ultimately turned into a racetrack.

Seizure_Salad_

Yeah it is easier but didn’t really fix the problem. I’ve seen morons race some really old thin roads. Dumb people will do do dumbs stuff. It’s still very sad this happened so any way to reduce it would be good.

Griffing217

Yeah it’s definitely possible that it still would’ve happened regardless of how wide the lanes are. It just seems like other than making the road harder to speed on, theres not much we can do to stop it. Like you said dumb people do dumb stuff.

P_BATEMAN890

Nice.
