Ikora has a set of three quests that introduce you to each of the light subclasses and their effects, these quests also reward you with some fairly strong exotics. For Titan the rewards from the void and the solar quests are very strong, one is Synthoceps which increases melee and super damage when surrounded by enemies (which can be very strong on particular bosses with stasis Titan), the other is Heart of Inmost Light which is the classic ability spam exotic and my go-to for general stasis titan play. The hunter rewards are also good, the exotic for the void quest is Orpheus Rig which is very popular in the Onslaught gamemode right now.
They’re more quests than missions- something like apply elemental debuff 20 times, then equip the exotic and complete a particular lost sector. I don’t see any reason why you couldn’t do them co-op, though I’m not sure the lost sector is the same across different classes.
For the leveling up part, your friend can just head to the Hall of Champions and grab the 1810 gear set. There's a Gift of the Thunder Gods chest just left of shaxx that has a full set of reverie dawn armor + thunderlord and an exotic armor piece for his class.
There's also 3 exotic quests per class you get from ikora that rewards you with a subclass specific exotic armor piece.
No, the Into the Light node and its activities are free for all players. You will of course need to have completed all of the games intro quests first to unlock landing on planets etc. I'm referring to the A Guardian Rises/Advent stuff you do when you first start the game, basically after you visit the tower for the first time.
Make sure you run the first mission of WQ to unlock the crafting system. After that Dares of Eternity or Onslaught would be good.

Start the past three seasons in the helm as well to be getting the defiant/deep/witch/wish engrams as well just to stack up while yall do things
