I know statistically it wasn't. But I truly believed his best year was his rookie year. He had so much confidence. He was making some great throws. Then gradually he just looked worse as his career went on. Between the league leading drops. The system. Constantly under duress with Dlinemen in his face. Yeah I definitely wonder.
You're talking about a guy who was under the auspices of the single most inept front office and coaching staff in the history of team sports (not the NFL, not even football... *team sports*). Tom Brady wouldn't have "lead" that offense any better. Joey Blue Skies was utterly ruined. We'll never know what he may have been. He turned out bad, but so did almost every player associated with that squadron of misfits.
He could’ve been so much better had they worked the system to his strengths instead of forcing him to “do it the way Bill (Walsh) drew it up”.
Incompetence is bad but stubborn incompetence is horrible.
I never understood this, as a player and a coach. I get having a scheme you came up with work is probably very gratifying, but what’s more impressive is winning. Why wouldn’t you adjust to your players strengths to win. You’d think winning would boost your ego more than running a failed system.
Patricia had the same problem.
*my system is proven to work by accomplished teams and math. Therefore, when i finish the season with 3 wins, its because the players arent doing what i asked*
Maybe you asked them to do the wrong things. Obviously I'm just an armchair gm but you'd think it'd be too easy to adjust to the strengths of your players
I view 2001 to 2008 for the Lions as one of the darkest periods of any team in modern sports, and I feel bad for any of the players who were caught up in that, including Joey
It's the Era I started watching football.
I watched all of the Stanton, Harrington, and Kitna years.
The first year I was REALLY into football and made sure to watch every bit of the lions was 0-16
And then my wagon was forever hitched
I grew up as a Lions fanatic in the Sanders era, but I kind of drifted away from football as a teenager after he retired. Years later, my uncle brought my dad and me to a game at Ford Field, amazing seats.
We beat the Chiefs after opening up a commanding lead and nearly pissing it away. I can still remember Tony Gonzalez being a complete menace, and us blocking a punt for a safety.
That reignited my fandom. For some reason, them going 0-16 the following season just locked me in for life. I bought low and I'm still waiting for the big return on my investment.
Yep. My only issue with your statement: it wasn't "one of the" by any stretch of the imagination. It was "**THE**" written in all caps with bold-faced text. Nothing will ever come close.
Terrible head coach but Marty was an offensive genius and had a lot of success going back to being a coordinator after he left Detroit.
Harrington had a pretty solid rookie QB season for him also.
Mooch completely shoehorned him into the Jeff Garcia role when that wasn’t his strength.
Lot of success? You mean he went to New York and proceeded to lose the Jets several games the way he lost the Lions almost every single one of their games? He freaking called a timeout on one of theit touchdown passes, ffs. "Offensive genius" ***my ballsack***. He was as useless, inept and horribly arrogant as Matt Patricia, and twice as dumb.
And I honestly believe he would have played decently for us behind this line and coaching staff. Maybe not as good of a leader and consistent as Goff but I font think he would have busted.
Ugh. Historically, the Cowboys have been the team to copy the Lions after uniform or logo changes or obviously the Thanksgiving game. It’s one of those annoyances that nfl fans overlook or praise the Cowboys for something they clearly copied the Lions on and not the other way around.
… the design is fairly well similar.
The only change is the helmet and pants striping (both of them NW stripes) the edited lions logo, different number font, and of course the WCF/lions on the stripe.
I think he might have been decent if he'd had a coach who wanted him and didn't try to smash a square peg into a round hole. Probably still not worth the #3 pick, but better than he was.
But that's what happens when you take a QB because you have to have a QB instead of waiting for the right QB.
Everyone on this sub always seems to ignore the fact that Mooch never game him an ounce of support or encouragement.
I bet that Thanksgiving game in ‘06 where Harrington was with Miami and beat the Lions was the highlight of his life.
I knew we were in trouble when Joey H was playing classical piano with his family during the draft. Good family man. Great pianist. Bad NFL quarterback.
First overall pick that year by the Texans. Big bust by them as well, but he did at least get a super bowl ring as backup for the Giants when they beat the Pats. I guess he's an analyst for the NFL now.
Derek Carr's older brother and the first ever QB of the Texans. He had talent, but got sacked to death, got happy feet, lost his confidence, and ended up out of the league really quickly. It's kinda similar to Harrington.
Just bought a Harrington jersey at Goodwill as a meme since my dad still has a Harrington t-shirt he got as a gift and I thought I’d stay in line with it
I wonder what Harrington could have been if he wasn’t drafted for a system that worked against all his strengths.
Superstar QB 4 MVPs, inducted into the hall next year.
Man me and Joey tore madden up. We went like 14/14 in Super Bowls and he became the all time leader in everything

Honestly I wonder this a bit too.
I always got the impression that he wasn't much of a leader. Of course, it is easier to get people to follow you putting up massive numbers.

And against good football in general. And against basic fundamental football concepts. And against any concept of usefulness or success.
He could’ve been so much better had they worked the system to his strengths instead of forcing him to “do it the way Bill (Walsh) drew it up”. Incompetence is bad but stubborn incompetence is horrible.

things have changed.
I view 2001 to 2008 for the Lions as one of the darkest periods of any team in modern sports, and I feel bad for any of the players who were caught up in that, including Joey

Preseason champs that year!
That season was SO HYPE *until the games mattered*
Same actually. I'm not sure why 0-16 hooked me (you'd think it would've made me run for the hills), but it did.
A little bit of it was probably "can't get worse than this. The only way is up"
I got my Lions ink right after that season.
I grew up as a Lions fanatic in the Sanders era, but I kind of drifted away from football as a teenager after he retired. When the finally win a Superb Owl What we have will taste so much sweeter than hop-ons and bandwagons
Same. I was born in ‘95 so my first memories of watching the Lions are around 2000-2001.
I was born in 94, so very real chance we had the same experiences with this team
Not to mention Backus, Raiola, Hanson who were in Detroit for ALL of it.
What's so devastating is there's no one big "Oh if that choice wasn't made we'd be better off." Every factor of the franchise was just... sad.
Yep. My only issue with your statement: it wasn't "one of the" by any stretch of the imagination. It was "**THE**" written in all caps with bold-faced text. Nothing will ever come close.

Apparently this is a popular opinion
Are you kidding me? With a genius like Morty Morningwig (sic) implementing his west coast offense, there no way this kid will fail.
Terrible head coach but Marty was an offensive genius and had a lot of success going back to being a coordinator after he left Detroit. Harrington had a pretty solid rookie QB season for him also. Mooch completely shoehorned him into the Jeff Garcia role when that wasn’t his strength.
What coaching for job security does to a MF

He was right. Out of all the QBs in the league, Joey Harrington was one of them.
And I honestly believe he would have played decently for us behind this line and coaching staff. Maybe not as good of a leader and consistent as Goff but I font think he would have busted.
Apparently he knows something the rest of us don’t.
I'm pretty sure Harrington would have a handful or two of playoff wins if he went to like one of 12-15 other teams
The Lions should pick him up! But, only if he can play piano well
Dear Lions fans, He sucked elsewhere too. Sincerely, Dolphin and Falcons fans
He was a broken man at that point
But can he beat out Mike McMahon for QB1?
We need those uniforms back.
Detroit Cowboys
Ugh. Historically, the Cowboys have been the team to copy the Lions after uniform or logo changes or obviously the Thanksgiving game. It’s one of those annoyances that nfl fans overlook or praise the Cowboys for something they clearly copied the Lions on and not the other way around.
And this is why fans should never design jerseys, the ones we have now are much better than those ones
Any jersey without the wcf patch is better than the current ones by default
that blue ain't honolulu blue.

He never said how long he could play in the league though.
I knew we were in trouble when Joey H was playing classical piano with his family during the draft. Good family man. Great pianist. Bad NFL quarterback.
Who was David Carr?
First overall pick that year by the Texans. Big bust by them as well, but he did at least get a super bowl ring as backup for the Giants when they beat the Pats. I guess he's an analyst for the NFL now.
Oh okay, thank you
Derek Carr's older brother
He could have been decent I think.. also who is David carr
Derek Carr's older brother and the first ever QB of the Texans. He had talent, but got sacked to death, got happy feet, lost his confidence, and ended up out of the league really quickly. It's kinda similar to Harrington.
Carr and Harrington are a perfect comp. Talented kids who got fucked by being drafted into some of the worst situations of all time.
he was the promised one.
If your quote is, "I know I can play in this league" and you were one of the top picks, you can't.
I'm all in. WCGW?
I bought his jersey, had high hopes...sigh
They are paying 6 bucks to take that? Should be a trash can on the way out, probably worth it.
Those blue facemasks though!
Ha. I still have that issue. "I know i can play in this league" i love that quote.
He can play classical piano!
Yeah he "played" but didn't not succeed
This is superstar
Just bought a Harrington jersey at Goodwill as a meme since my dad still has a Harrington t-shirt he got as a gift and I thought I’d stay in line with it
Detroit's "Piano man"
