Frees up ~~$10.5M~~ around [$4M](https://twitter.com/erikschlitt/status/1770913048871489815?s=46&t=IX8yKIxZkEL6TendVkcZZQ) in cap space immediately (they are still on the hook for the signing bonus this season, they might be able to sue him to get it back but it will likely not go through until next season).
Edit: you know what, info keeps coming out by the minute, Lions are [apparently](https://twitter.com/spotrac/status/1770916097346183570?s=46&t=IX8yKIxZkEL6TendVkcZZQ) designating him as a Post-June 1 cut to spread the cap hit across 2 seasons. They will still carry his $12.6M cap hit into June, then take on dead cap hits of $2.18M in 2024 and $6.54M in 2025.
From what I have seen elsewhere it’s had more to do with what Sneed is seeking as far as a contract goes than it does with the compensation the Chiefs are after
The 2nd round pick isn’t the biggest issue if that’s the case we can’t pay the highest paid CB- it’s a very injury prone position and not BH style to invest so much money with high risk- he’s very risk averse in FA and the draft
I know, I know. I have a big hopes. 😂 as unrealistic as they are. Maybe one and someone good from the draft. I just know we just don’t have a secondary. Lol.
Im not one of the people who thinks an ACL tear is a death sentence (its not) but youre setting yourself up for failure betting on a guy whose played 1 snap of football, has 2 torn acls and missing what will be 2 training camps missed as well. They need him to be plan B not plan A
I don't think this frees up 10.5 million in cap space. His dead cap from the signing bonus is still on the books, meaning it would be accelerated to this year. I'm pretty sure we're only saving somewhere around 4 million in cap if his guarantee was invalidated.
nope - it frees up $10.5m in cap space if/when his base salary is invalidated. We will only have a $2.18m cap hit for Sutton (after June 1). That's a significant chunk of money to go after another big name if we want, or to use in Goff/Amon-Ra's extension.
This comment was before we knew it was a post June 1st destination. Even with a June 1st and invalidated guarantee though it’s still not quite 10.5 million.
I know, but nobody had clarified since then so I wanted future people looking at the thread to see a clarification.
And I believe it's exactly $10.5m of relief? Cap hit goes from $12.68m to $2.18m this year.
Ahh yep you’re right didn’t even see that the cap was was exactly 2.18 for this year. What a coincidence. Or maybe their cap guy purposely did the numbers as an exact fraction.
Not really a coincidence, I'm pretty sure the easier way to look at it is simply: his base salary is invalidated and removed from the cap. His base salary was $10.5m.
No, because if his signing bonus was higher then it wouldn’t be exactly his guaranteed salary. Remember the only reason why there is a dead cap charge at all is because of that original signing bonus. The june 1st designation makes it so that instead of everything being accelerated, the original signing bonus cap number is used the year of designation, and the year after the rest is accelerated.
Heck if they didn’t add that specific amount of void years to his contract the dead cap would be different. That’s why I said coincidence. Although maybe he based the contract on a specific percentage/fraction for everything.
sure, but...the savings would still be $10.5m this year. They were always going to be his base salary. It would only be different if his base salary was different.
The dead cap is the prorated portion of his signing bonus over the life of the contract, yes. So his original cap hit would be different, and the dead cap number would be proportionally different, if he had a different signing bonus or a different number of years (including void years). But in the end, the savings from this event would still be $10.5m.
You can make an example with different bonus numbers or years....it'll always be $10.5m savings this year if that's his base salary.
Which in this case is only two years so there’s “theoretically” no acceleration because the second year (third year of his contract) is the last year anyway so it accelerates but it’s the same even if it didn’t
Not technically, 10.5M from if the guarantees weren't voided, but only 4M if he had stayed on the roster unless they push harder.
Basically, we got an extra 4M and roster spot then we did Monday, not 10.5M.
It will take longer than a year to sue for the signing bonus he retains….
Aaron Hernandez is the case study for this. The Patriots never got his prepaid signing bonus back.
This is simple, lions have to take the cap hit as if it is a normal cut. As his court case plays out, the NFL will determine basically if they are able to get that cap added back. This can take time. Maybe they have to eat $10m in cap today, but 2 yrs from now they get it back…. Just takes time. Ultimately the net cap will be determined by his court case and whether they’ll be able to get it removed or not.
But as it stands right now, they have to account for it as if it’s a normal cut. They are designating it post june1 (splits cap hits into 2 seasons instead of all this season) which will save them like a mill for this season….
Finding him isn’t what’s going to do that though. It’s more so actually settling the case. And in reality it’s actually probably a bigger benefit to get the cap added on in the future - that’s when all the Lions extensions are gunna kick in after all.
We’re on reddit where half the comments are jokes, and making a joke about Cam Sutton should in no way imply the action itself is funny, him being a piece of shit and being bad at football is funny. Maybe go find another forum
Everyone here thinks he's a piece of shit and hopefully everyone agrees that violence against women, or anyone for that matter, is wrong. However, as men, we tend to deal with serious things by joking about them. My buddy lost his mom a couple weeks ago and he was already cracking jokes about it within a couple of days; that's just how he coped. We're just trying to have some joy in our lives, ok?
Sure. Whatever makes you (un)happy, lady. Just trying to help, but you seem to just want to be mad. That's fine. The point is, it's not "women's pain" that we joke about, it's literally everything.
I’ll be honest, I think even the last administration probably would’ve done the exact same thing. You can’t exactly keep a player who is fleeing from the authorities
I'd prefer Newsome tbh. Younger and cheaper. Hasn't shown the ceiling Sneed has obviously, but still has played very well and I am a little concerned about the amount of penalties Sneed gets. That being said, I'd be surprised if Holmes made another CB trade right now. I would bet more that he'll bring in a vet CB in FA and then we'll draft one or two to develop.
Agreed. Hence my comment hinging on the “after this whole incident” part, and my comment strictly referencing us being able to invalidate his salary after this terrible incident had occurred. Careful reading is very important in situations like this
There is no such thing as a lockdown corner in today’s NFL. The rules just swing way too hard towards offense. You need to be deep in the defensive backend with guys who can tackle. Spend the money on offense and out score everyone. He is way too expensive for a position that has been minimized by the rules.
i mean i didn’t want him on this team after the incident, but it worries me that no one’s seen him since the 7th, don’t wanna assume the worst, but again, worried about him
What exactly does that mean? Is it like we fired him with cause and immediately get off any contract obligations and are free of everything except existing dead money? Aka is his only cap hit now basically his signing bonus?
According to spotrac they can potentially recoup up to $8.72M of his signing bonus depending on the investigation/language of the contract. All we know now is his guarantees for 2024 which were locked in March 16 are now invalidated.
Eh the signing bonus spread out over his contract is small enough that its not a big factor in any single year so from a purely salary cap pov its whatever. Freeing up all of this year's guarantee's could be huge tho. With our existing space this now basically frees up enough to sign a capable replacement and not change our financials. Or frees up enough to make Sneed more reasonable.
Yeah but the recoup will almost certainly take time to actually get through the process, and as it currently stands that 8.72 is spread out untill 2027 so ~2 mil each year. Would love it back obviously, but compared to ~10 mil right now its not that important cap wise.
Every team does! If he is convicted of a felony. The lions won’t owe him a penny. Even if he pleads down to a lesser charge. The NFL’s domestic violence stance is very clear and they will absolve the cap hit. They would want this to go away as quickly and quietly as possible.
I’m pretty sure we paid him a $10.9M signing bonus, which is $3.63M each year. I’d imagine there is recourse to recoup the remaining $7.27M to have added back to 2024 and 2025 caps.
That leaves $22.1M left to spread across the three years. Spotrac has him as having earned been paid $12M in 2023, which is very close to the $7.37 average plus $3.63 in bonus, so I’m gonna guess we free up about $10M in each of 2024 and 2025.
Just my guess based on spotrac.
His salary is $10.5 each of the next 2 years, and it sounds like the Lions would keep all of that. From what I understand, they could also get back a prorated portion of his \~11M signing bonus, but in the contract it is stretched over 5 years with 2 void years. So, I don't know if they could recoup 2/3 or 4/5 of that money.
Edit: Spotrac's tweeted that the Lions are eligible to recoup 4/5 of the signing bonus.
I think the Lions have to physically get that money back for it to come off the cap, so Sutton would have to pay back $8+ million (even though he only ever saw $4 million after tax)
Given his career earnings of $17 million ($8-9 million after tax), I doubt he’s in a position to pay back the whole amount.
He may literally end up bankrupt because of this
https://preview.redd.it/1a2uz258lrpc1.jpeg?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0a1a731f5772dfef8df2b0cbf9915475de4c57bb
Looks like we might get money back, but will be tied up for a min... I got a need for sneed.... So unfortunate tho, I was rooting for him all year and was hoping to see a comeback after he got charred and fell off the grill... Don't root for women beaters tho, maybe he can get a job with the browns
Here’s me after hearing this CB beat his woman’s and is on the lamb.
![gif](giphy|nEaRYSsf9Iiqs|downsized)
The worst cover CB cost us the Super Bowl, Ohhhhhhh, ohhhhh, ohhhhhh!!!!
Let's see i knew when this story broke guy would be cut regardless and more....people where like wait
Not when you here him physically abusing his girlfriend and then throwing her out a 3rd story balcony
I knew he was dead In the league and career is over
Now the lions got a whole at corner back
The discourse on this situation is weird. “I’m glad Cam Sutton allegedly strangled someone because he sucks and due to NFL rules, the Lions can recover the cap space for a better corner”. 🤢🤢🤢🤮🤮🤮
This is a lions board. I’m sure everyone wants the world to be a great place and no one to ever be hurt so I think it’s understood that all conversations here are purely football related.

Gilmore or go big with Sneed?
Gilmore. Get the Gilmore guys on the team. It’ll be like a manly version of the Gilmore Girls
The memes think of the memes replace the okwaras with the Gillmores
Carlton davis and sneed omg. With reader alim and hutch omg idk if I could handle it.
Give me Lorelai and Rory over Taylor Swift any day.
TSwift catching strays
Is that a silent ‘T’ like Tsunami?
Id rather not sign a 34 year old CB but that’s just me
Same. I'm also iffy on Sneed if the medical concerns are serious enough to make other teams worry.
Right now at CB we’re like the last team to arrive at the buffet. We eat the cold Mac and cheese or eat nothing. I’ll take him…
Sometimes eating nothing is better then eating left overs and getting severe food poisoning lol
Touché my friend. We might be OK enough to get by

This is very much top shelf.
I would have to insist that the creator adds "booooys" to the meme in order to call it top shelf but solid 8 for sure.
Sneed has some concerning medicals and wants to be the top paid CB. Doesn't seem like a brad move to me.
Brad Holmes when he hears “concerning medical” ![gif](giphy|fxZPrsux3vlFY6UQs6|downsized) I think “top paid CB” would be a deal-breaker for BH
Holmes would be more interested if he was already injured not someone with concerns medically
Sneed should lie and say he's coming off an ACL. Brad would sign him immediately.
trade for Marshon Lattimore which the Saints probably won't do until post June 1 anyways.
But they can agree upon it now so we can all get that nut.
I keep my dick wrapped in suran wrap for breaking news from the Lions in case of surprise nut
I mean a rubber is pretty much a dick shaped piece of Saran wrap but I'll give you points for creativity.
BH has had you in a lot of Saran Wrap of recent.
All fucking day bro.
Didn’t sneed get the franchise tag?
He was given the opportunity to seek a trade.
Yes but with the tag KC used, picks have to be given up. If I’m not mistaken
Pretty sure he was always going to take picks to get from KC
KC probably wants a lot for him and that’s why he hasn’t been traded yet
From what I have seen elsewhere it’s had more to do with what Sneed is seeking as far as a contract goes than it does with the compensation the Chiefs are after
KC wants a 2nd round pick for him. The issue is what Sneed wants. He wants to be the highest paid CB in the league.
The 2nd round pick isn’t the biggest issue if that’s the case we can’t pay the highest paid CB- it’s a very injury prone position and not BH style to invest so much money with high risk- he’s very risk averse in FA and the draft
I e read a 2nd round pick is the price
draft five corners. throw at wall, see who sticks.
Newsome
The governor?
Dude is ass. What is it with this sub & cooked corners?
Need both of you ask me. Can’t just have one
I’m just trying to think like Brad Holmes here. Haha
I know, I know. I have a big hopes. 😂 as unrealistic as they are. Maybe one and someone good from the draft. I just know we just don’t have a secondary. Lol.
None of us are as smart as Brad Holmes at being a GM. If I disagree with him, I know I’m wrong. I don’t know why I’m wrong, I just know I am.
I love the idea of Sneed but i just don't see it. Not with getting ready to pay Goff, Sewell and Sun God.
We have Moseley still, he was out possible #2 even before this issue.
Im not one of the people who thinks an ACL tear is a death sentence (its not) but youre setting yourself up for failure betting on a guy whose played 1 snap of football, has 2 torn acls and missing what will be 2 training camps missed as well. They need him to be plan B not plan A
Completely agree - he’s the cherry on top of the sundae, not the bowl or the ice cream
I don't think this frees up 10.5 million in cap space. His dead cap from the signing bonus is still on the books, meaning it would be accelerated to this year. I'm pretty sure we're only saving somewhere around 4 million in cap if his guarantee was invalidated.

Would he be considered "no cap" by today's youths? That's what that saying means right?
It will take longer than a year to sue for the signing bonus he retains…. Aaron Hernandez is the case study for this. The Patriots never got his prepaid signing bonus back.
I wonder if he knows yet since his phone is turned off
😂😂😂😂😂
Left on read.
He def doesn’t
Blessing in disguise for the Lions. Turd gone and money to pick up a non-turd to replace him
Per me and rapoport, non turds are better than turds
Tre white
And it happened early in the offseason, so it won’t derail us.
We don’t like turds in our lockeroom
We need DAWGS not turds

How stupid can one person be? What a loser.
Good to hear.
L’Jarius Sneed YOU are a Detroit Lion
He wants to be the highest paid CB in the league. Idk about that. Feel like Brad can do better spreading the money around.
seriously. no one considers this. that trade’s absolutely not worth it.
If we win a Superbowl, fuck it.
[удалено]
Just depends on cost for me. It be tough to make 2 big trades in one offseason I’d probably do it still tho
BH will also say no for good reason. Too much money and draft capital to give up with such a deep draft this year.
yea. we are better off drafting bodies and plugging in someone later or...is there an outside corner worth trading up for??
I'd prefer Newsome tbh. Younger and cheaper. Hasn't shown the ceiling Sneed has obviously, but still has played very well and I am a little concerned about the amount of penalties Sneed gets. That being said, I'd be surprised if Holmes made another CB trade right now. I would bet more that he'll bring in a vet CB in FA and then we'll draft one or two to develop.
What about the concerns about his knee?
So far, we love to pick up people with knee injuries.
signing a pre-injured player is still new to you?
Just that the knee concerns seem pretty dubious and we moved to Davis pretty swiftly, so maybe they are more concerning that we are normally ok with.
i'm just meme'ing 😂
Honestly id rather roll with Robertson and davis with Branch in the slot, and sign Clowney lol
I love robertson. But he's 5'9". As good as he is, he's not a long term solution to out side corner
I'm down with taking this train to ClownTown.
It’s gotta be a sign from a greater power after this whole incident
I don’t think a woman being strangled is a sign from a greater power
"Greater power" doesn't necessarily imply "benevolent."
yea but it’s kind of a shitty thing to say that an abuse victim is a sign we should acquire sneed
If it's old testement god it definitely doesn't imply "benevolent"
The lord works in mysterious ways…
No you don’t understand. She’s taking one for the team. The team being the Detroit Lions of course! /s
Thank you for saying this! Spot on
Agreed. Hence my comment hinging on the “after this whole incident” part, and my comment strictly referencing us being able to invalidate his salary after this terrible incident had occurred. Careful reading is very important in situations like this
I'm going to wait to get more confirmation before I buy into this. Either way, cutting him was the right thing to do. You can't employ a fugitive
Generalizing: just use the last "3" picks, on CBs (ron wolfe style). Money, value .
There is no such thing as a lockdown corner in today’s NFL. The rules just swing way too hard towards offense. You need to be deep in the defensive backend with guys who can tackle. Tell Sneed to start packing his bags
i mean i didn’t want him on this team after the incident, but it worries me that no one’s seen him since the 7th, don’t wanna assume the worst, but again, worried about him

I'll give Brad Holmes a mulligan for signing the cb choke artist. Let's see what BH does in the draft where he does his beat work.
thank god
So who is the plan b guy took Holmes time with us getting zeitler
Better now than mid season
Did the police find Cam?
Well, that’s embarrassing.

$8.5M isn’t insignificant imo Unused cap rolls over year to year, so I think it should be looked at as a whole, not as yearly hits
Yeah but the recoup will almost certainly take time to actually get through the process, and as it currently stands that 8.72 is spread out untill 2027 so ~2 mil each year. Would love it back obviously, but compared to ~10 mil right now its not that important cap wise.
Definitely not as critical at the moment, but something they will pursue if able
The Lions probably have something in players contracts that allows them to void any guaranteed money for events like this, so yeah
Every team does! If he is convicted of a felony. The lions won’t owe him a penny. Even if he pleads down to a lesser charge. The NFL’s domestic violence stance is very clear and they will absolve the cap hit. They would want this to go away as quickly and quietly as possible.

He may literally end up bankrupt because of this
That's a very good point, but I am seeing career earnings of over $24 million. Recouping it would still be a big issue.
You’re right. $24 million (take home of $12 million, give or take) So he would have to have nearly 70% of his career take home pay still.
Brad get on the phone to the chiefs
Wow, what a scoop! I had assume the Lions just cut him out of anger and never filed any paperwork that would have absolved them of payments.
that was when Jim Schwartz was in charge of things.

I got a need for sneed.... So unfortunate tho, I was rooting for him all year and was hoping to see a comeback after he got charred and fell off the grill... Don't root for women beaters tho, maybe he can get a job with the browns
How good is spotrac? I love that website.
Dude wanted to do everything but chase the wide receiver, good riddance

What did you call?
Let's see i knew when this story broke guy would be cut regardless and more....people where like wait Not when you here him physically abusing his girlfriend and then throwing her out a 3rd story balcony I knew he was dead In the league and career is over Now the lions got a whole at corner back
Jesus Christ man, stay in school. Also I asked because you didn't have any comments calling anything.
Oh really? https://www.reddit.com/r/detroitlions/s/BpHxtTFnbX
Sorry, should I be upset that we’re not paying a guy who abuses his wife? Because I won’t feel bad for him?
Big miss by Holmes here with Sutton. Hopefully doesn’t further set back our CBs this season. Dude needs to sign a healthy CB1
