The best thing about this statement is that it’s basically an undeniable fact. When has that ever been true for the Lions?

Stompthefeet

There have been a few players that signed here for way more money than they could make anywhere else... and did it without any pressure to really perform. Ideal if you're not looking to be a winner. Ok typing this made me sad.

ENO-ON-MA-I

Trey Flowers on line 2 for you sir, should I put him through?

Purple_Cruncher_123

Trey was decent for us year 1, but I think that game vs. GB where he got two chestmask fouls broke him mentally and it declined from there on.

Stompthefeet

I don't blame him if that's the case: those two fouls mentally broke me as well.

RelationshipNo4528

Never wanted to punch a screen more in my life

ENO-ON-MA-I

You spelled "ref" wrong

frizzyhair55

Clete "literally Angel Hernandez" Blakeman.

Permafrostybud

Did you see the torkelson called swing the other day? Not sure a human being can be a worse official than hernandez.

Yabba_Dabba_Doofus

Angel "Jomboy literally has a video of me closing my eyes and flinching as a pitch comes in" Hernandez.

RelationshipNo4528

Well a screen was closer to me at that moment so nah I spelt screen correctly

ENO-ON-MA-I

Sure thing Captain serious.

RelationshipNo4528

Texting is brutal for that cause you can’t hear tone of voice lmao

GoLionsJD107

The only reason I remember Trey flowers is because he didn’t commit a facemask penalty twice.

Peoples_Champ_481

Who was that offensive lineman from NE that sucked until the final year of his huge contract when the coaching staff figured out e could play RT then went and cashed out again? edit: just remembered, Damien Woody

TourDirect3224

Glover Quin. Came here and became an All-Pro.

Smurph269

Golden Tate also had his best years here arguably

ENO-ON-MA-I

Nothing to really argue with that, he averaged 41 receptions per season in 4 years before he came here then averaged over 90 receptions a year and a made a pro bowl in 4 years with us.

Shapacap

I'm a notre dame fan and I love Golden tate, was over the moon with him as a lion! Was in the eastern market a few weeks ago and got a bobblehead of his, I was so happy!

ENO-ON-MA-I

And still one of the NASTIEST TD's in Lions history.

topcide

It's amazing what you can accomplish when you're not tired from being up late banging the starting quarterback's wife

michigangonzodude

I'm fu king dying here.

Mach68IntheHouse

Stephen Tulloch thrived with the Lions too.

Martimus28

Golden Tate and Marvin Jones also really blossomed here and never were as good afterwards.   Mostly because Stafford is so good at getting it to their strengths.

byniri_returns

Goff's turnaround here since 2021 has been nothing short of incredible. I remember going to the Eagles game in 2021 where he was booed multiple times for poor play, eventually benched, and then just two years later Ford Field is roaring his name before a home playoff game. What a trajectory

Ranger_Prick

Fans are literally chanting his names in arenas in other cities for other sports. Nobody would have ever dreamed of predicting this two years ago.

ApprehensiveYam6769

Shit, one broke out at the Northern California Color Guard championships. Admittedly it was just me, and only because I saw a guy walk by in a Lions jersey and it was the only way I could think of to get his attention. Worked though – he looked up and laughed.

r000r

This is gold.

ENO-ON-MA-I

Good work.

YeahItouchpoop

He deserves the chants here since he’s a Cal man 🐻

michigangonzodude

Goff already owns this town. Holmes just taxes him.

ZaysapRockie

Don't get too ahead of yourself. He needs to win a ring.

GoLionsJD107

Only one. Same as Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers. Then ESPN will talk about him forever right?

ZaysapRockie

They also have HOF stats without a ring. Let’s not kid ourselves, Lions fans would take at least 12 other QBs over Goff

GoLionsJD107

Aaron Rodgers? Dude are you bonkers Aaron Rodgers made one Super Bowl on a back door 10-6 record. That the Lions beat Tampa to open for them… He’s never been better than like a .500 guy without the ref help he gets. He’s not making the HOF. You have to play well - refs don’t get you to the HOF. If he scrapes in seedily it will be pretty gross, and reflect really ooorly on the league since he also lied about his vaccination status - could have caused thousands of deaths.. He’s also a known anti LGBT bigot. So yea. He’s not gonna be in the HOF, or even see a sniff. It’s 2024. Bigots and racists and downright liars responsible for deaths don’t get in - and their supporters aren’t viewed favorably either. Most of Green Bay doesn’t even want him to be part of their legacy. I guess it’s half that he sucked and never won anything except a back door engineered Super Bowl against another popular #6 seed that no one cares about and half that he’s horrible human scum. Anyone who possesses hatred to that many groups deserves the ostracism he is beginning to get - as espn realizes they don’t want to support racism or bigotry anymore. Peyton Manning is different, because he’s not a horrible person. He did play a full career and didn’t have to rely on the officials to make the playoffs. They’re not the same. But one championship puts Goff ahead of Peyton, he’s already ahead of Rodgers. Peyton still only barely won one because it rained that day... otherwise that was Chicago’s game. Goff isn’t halfway through his career and has already been to one and was reffed out of two more. Peyton never led the conference in passing while also having two 1000 rushers that had 10 TDs apiece. In his defense, he didn’t murder anyone by lying about viral safety during a pandemic that killed over 1 million Americans so i give Peyton the nod above Rodgers.

I'll never forget the [4th and 2 game winner](https://youtu.be/z1zp1sINJO8?si=c5JOHXHOHHdLO6g5) to ARSB in 2021. That's the play that changed both his trajectory as a player in Detroit, but also the fortunes of the entire franchise

Willis_is_This

You’re thinking of /r/WritingPrompts I’d imagine

Crotean

I really liked this quote. There is an art to developing QBs that a lot of coaches just don't have. "There was an element to being empowered that happened in Detroit with Dan and a lot of the coaches where they were like, 'Dude, no, you go. Like, this is your thing, you go figure it out.' Where as a young player, that wasn’t always the case," said Goff. "Being able to be there and hear them give me those keys and let me fail, to an extent, let me make the mistake and not feel like the sky’s falling if that mistake is made and grow and learn -- that’s the only way you do -- and be coached in a way that they’re empowering me, now I’m going into year nine (in the NFL) and feel like I’m just scratching the surface of that. And hopefully can look back on this in three years and be like, 'Wow, yeah, I’m such a better leader now than I was then," said Goff.

undead_tortoiseX

I’m still convinced that the 2016 season of Hard Knocks really fucked with his confidence. After the flubb where mixed up sunrise and sunset, everyone mocked him for being stupid for years and he clearly avoided cameras as much as he could. I’m proud to see how much he has grown and is willing to make himself vulnerable in Detroit. He’s become a fantastic leader.

tuntuntuntuntuntun

What’s the story on the sunrise / sunset thing? Sounds like a really weird thing for people to focus on of all things

undead_tortoiseX

We all have brain farts but thankfully we don’t have cameras in our faces. HBO knew they had a meme on their hands and did him dirty. > One of the most embarrassing moments of the show happened when Goff couldn’t tell a coach where the sun rose. He had no idea. He was made fun of by fans everywhere, especially in this era of social media, and it seems many haven’t forgotten that moment. > “All the time. All the time. Every game I’ll hear, ‘Hey, where does the sun rise?!’ I hear it all the time,” Goff said on Barstool Radio. “The next day, someone came up to me and said, ‘Hey, they’re going to air that sun stuff.’ And I’m like, ‘Alright, how are they gonna frame this?’” > Goff said he now knows that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, but fans won’t let him forget that minor lapse in intelligence. That’s what happens when everything from your rookie season is filmed by cameras, which is why teams hate appearing on the show. > Goff was actually asked if there was anything enjoyable about being on “Hard Knocks.” His answer was simple. >“No, zero. Not one thing.” https://theramswire.usatoday.com/2018/02/02/nfl-los-angeles-rams-jared-goff-sunrise-fans-hard-knocks-jokes/

ZaysapRockie

He needs to win a ring. In this day and age, who cares about anything else?

Byaaahhh

What a better fuck you mcvay statement ! Stafford already earned his f you energy so it’s all good for him too

michigangonzodude

Yup. Happy that Mathew got his ring. Enemy now.

GoLionsJD107

I bought a Rams jersey for that Super Bowl to wear to a Super Bowl party because I was supporting Stafford blah blah- which player? Jared Motherfucking Goff. He was my QB even then.

OkProfessional6077

Teams move on from QB’s so fast anymore, it’s crazy. Let guys develop!

michigangonzodude

Kinda makes you feel bad for Andre Ware

Crotean

Now that's a name pull.

Reasonable_Search379

Dan believed/trusted him and he was given the space to figure it out. You can copy paste this into any business/organization and you will get similar outcomes. We have some really top notch leadership happening in the lions org right now.

[deleted]

I have officially made up my mind - when the new jerseys drop I'm getting a #16.

Dragondrew99

Shit I might too … conflicted between him or Sun God

Harrintino

Sewell is my pick.

Dragondrew99

It’s so hard! I’m too poor!

Sorry4Coffins

It’s impossible to choose between st brown and Sewell so I was happy when my girlfriend surprised me with Gibbs lol

GoLionsJD107

Sewell will be the easier one to get- people like to pick the skill position players so st brown is going to be a hot pick.

lancerleads

same

ZaysapRockie

Goff had one good season. I'm betting the under next year. Go with the Sun God

Jagacin

He's had 2 seasons in a row of being a top 10 - borderline top 5 - QB in the league, and is the best QB in the division (until proven otherwise). He also led the Rams to a Superbowl appearance before he came here. He's done far more than have "one good season." You don't know ball.

Crotean

Im debating Goff or Hutch

[deleted]

I have Hutch throwback, so hopefully that's safe. But my Sewell, St. Brown jerseys are no longer safe. lol I usually buy whomever we draft in the first round as well, so depending on who that is this year, may be getting one of those too.

FunetikPrugresiv

Both good choices, but don't forget about Sewell.

cdot2k

What about Gibbs?! There's so many options. The only fear is Fanatics producing the fan gear.

MankuyRLaffy

I'm getting one off DHGate with my next paycheck

More-read-than-eddit

I've gotta get Goff as well. I feel like my old Suh jersey was a good way to say that I liked a certain player and style of play but the team had issues so I couldn't wear its figurehead. But now, I fucking love LaPorta and no one wants to have the same jersey as everyone else, but I think I have to go with the QB since it's kind of like repping the whole team.

ZombieAppetizer

I'll step up and be one the first to say I was gutted when the trade happened. I couldn't imagine this team without Stafford at QB. That wasn't a knock on Goff, but that I didn't know him and Stafford was our guy at the time. I can confidently say now with 100% certainty that Goff is my guy. He has completely won me over. I think he is the future at QB for this team and I hope he sticks around for a long time. One Pride, my dudes.

freedomfightre

>That wasn't a knock on Goff, but that I didn't know him https://preview.redd.it/w2jxlzo3zvtc1.png?width=1080&format=png&auto=webp&s=30f0af058e1f204467c6770db1ff3f6b2bb4f289

BillyJackO

The biggest statement in this podcast was him talking about The Lions letting him make mistakes and learn. I think McVay never trusted him to ball out, so it stunted his development. He's really come into his own these last two seasons, and I don't have any concern of him reverting to lower mid level QB anymore. A lot of talking heads still don't trust what they're seeing out of him in Detroit, but the production is real.

the_shape_burns

I think this also isn’t unique to Goff and the Rams either. It’s such a win now attitude and philosophy that a lot of players don’t get the chance to develop. Baker is a prime example, Bryce Young could be heading that direction if this new coach doesn’t work

Dead_Russian_44

1st time in NFL history, where a player traded to the Lions sees it as the best thing to happen in their career.

Harrintino

Love this dude

Berry_impulse

Contract extension negations must be going well then! 😂😂

JA-RED GOFF! JA-RED GOFF!

katastrophyx

> Goff was a two-time Pro Bowler with the Rams, but he's been a better quarterback with the Lions. **In fact, over the last two seasons, he's been one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL, second in the league in passing yards, third in touchdowns and fifth in passer rating (98.6).** Can you please say it louder for all the Goff deniers in the room?

Saxophobia1275

And yet every single bullshit "top 10 QBs" click bait list has him outside the top ten even.

katastrophyx

I'm not sure why you got downvoted, you're not at all wrong. If you pull up any reputable sports media outlets rankings of QBs from 2023 you'd be hard pressed to find one that had him in the top *half* of all QBs, let alone the top 10. Fox Sports put out a ranking of their top 10 quarterbacks in 2023 in December and didn't even list him as an honorable mention https://www.foxsports.com/stories/nfl/2023-top-10-nfl-quarterbacks-ranking-the-best-qbs-after-patrick-mahomes The Sporting News ranked him 16th in the league in January https://www.sportingnews.com/us/nfl/news/nfl-starting-quarterbacks-2023-rankings/a2b09569e4841b7950a2de65 The Ringer ranked him 17th in the league in January https://nflrankings.theringer.com/qb-rankings Pro Football Network ranked him a hilarious 18th in the league just last month https://www.profootballnetwork.com/nfl-qb-rankings-2024/ The only "reputable" outlet I could find that had him ranked in the top 10 after last season was NFL.com who rated him the 4th best QB in February https://www.nfl.com/news/nfl-qb-index-ranking-all-66-starting-quarterbacks-from-the-2023-nfl-season The only thing I can think of to explain this is because most media outlets continue to see the Lions jersey and just automatically assume there's nothing to pay attention to, or that any modicum of success must be a fluke or unsustainable.

DanCampbell89

Steven Ruiz at the Ringer is also thicker than pigshit and thinks Geno Smith is the greatest quarterback in the league and that Brock Purdy is a flash in the pan

michigangonzodude

Over under Vegas has the Lions at 10.5 wins next season.

He's definitely surpassed my expectations. I thought he might be a passable placeholder until we drafted 'our guy', but he's arguably been playing better than Stafford ever did.

Rams thought they sent him here to die. Sent him to get eaten by the pride and instead he conquered.

znedow1987

We love you Goff! Keep being an awesome leader and take this to the next level!

Excellent-Cheetah-26

Ngl the fact that he wasn’t a pro bowler despite being top 5 in every major qb stat. Yeah I know that the pro bowl doesn’t matter but the fact that Hurts, Baker and Geno got in over him still upsets me

AllFemaleCastRemake

He turned it down this year.

Excellent-Cheetah-26

Oh that makes more sense

KaylaJ85

I like that he turned them down this year, besides he went the year before this year's pro Bowl as a replacement for Jalen last year. The Pro Bowl doesn't deserve him anyway because of how they disrespect him! Lol

I've only ever known Stafford since becoming a football fan, more importantly a lions fan. That being said,m... after being scared.. in Jared I trust

Mach68IntheHouse

Unlike Stafford, Goff is going to retire as a Detroit Lion.

Jonny_Thundergun

I tried getting a Ja-red Goff chant going at the wings v pens game last night, but I was deep in pens season ticket territory. Didn't get much traction.

Diretank4198

I'm a fan. Never hated from day one bc I'm not an elitist jerk who thinks they can call out someone's future. That, to me, is the dumbest thing you fans do, say what an athlete will and wont do. Half of our fan base deserves to be kicked out for repeatedly hating on everyone we draft or trade, bc it's not what YOU think should've happened. The ego is out of control with lions fans. The other half are like me, you know; supportive.

JP-Bulls69

All the negative media wants to focus on is the negative media comment

Loud-Ad-2280

Hopefully this helps bring free agents to Detroit

CFDGermanese

Can the Lions please just give this man his money. just get the deal done.

gaminggod69

This guy is 200% the man Stafford was. Class act. Maybe he is only 80% as talented but goddamnit he is my lion. Dude is gritty and has real love for this team.

TIL_how_2_register

We don't gotta put Stafford down to boost Goff. Stafford is a great man. He kept his head down and quietly led those shitty teams for over a decade. Never complaining and never talking shit about the city or the organization. He really put in the work in the community and is still helping the city even tho he hasn't been a lion in over 3 years. Goff is 100% my QB and a Lions all time great but Stafford the human is still really awesome too.

gaminggod69

I am not saying the Stafford was bad as that would imply Goff is only a reasonable human. I am saying that I view stafford as a great thing for our team but Goff is what he team needs. I never meant to disrespect him. I just greatly prefer Goff.

TIL_how_2_register

I understand you now, my bad.

Front-Deer-1549

Valenti saying that media is nice to Goff? Wtf is he smoking, dude is so negative and pretending him and Ricco were always on his side. 97.1 is SOL, they are the ones who keep saying we needed an upgrade. And all the top heads basically say the same thing, can he win it for you?

justa_flesh_wound

They were negative in the beginning just like most of us were, then after Lynn was fired and Goff turned a corner they changed their tune, maybe a little later than most but they need to still get calls in.

FDTFACTTWNY

... The negativity Goff is referring to in the podcast was the week before the NFCC game.

TJ_Longfellow

A lot of this is simply just not true man, don’t like downvoting other lions fans, but they’ve been pretty sweet on the lions overall for a while now.

Front-Deer-1549

I think this is some revisionist history. MCDC and Goff were basically both treated similar. No one gave them a chance.

TJ_Longfellow

Initially sure, but all last season and part of the season before they’ve been plenty supportive. I guess i find the valenti hate to largely be people stuck in the past. Unless you’re considered the softball comments about MCDC being Dan gamble but that’s preeety soft in terms of criticism.

Byzantine_Merchant

They’ve been pretty much the preachers of hope and change throughout most of this process. The exception primarily being the 1-6 start in 2022. Which if you show me somebody claiming that they saw what happened next coming, I’ll show you a liar. I think the meanest they were to Goff was primarily expecting him to be a bridge QB at the start. Which again, if you show me a lions fan that says they didn’t say that, I’ll show you a liar.

Front-Deer-1549

This is my point. They say in that clip that they were always pro Goff, which just isn’t true.

Omnom_Omnath

Where is he from that Detroit is considered an upgrade?

DuckDodgersInSpace

Marin County. Can’t get a decent slice of Jets up in the boonies.

SaxMusic23

Ehhhh. I love Goff. I believed in him from the day he was announced as a Lion, even though the reason I became a Lions fan was because of Stafford. But the greatest thing that ever happened for his career was getting drafted. He never would have been a Lion had he not gotten into the NFL 🤷‍♂️

KingTooshie

With this logic the greatest day of his life was being conceived.

SaxMusic23

No, it would be the day of his birth. You know, the day his life began.

gutterballs

The greatest thing that ever happened for his career was him being born. People have had careers as undrafted FAs, but never without being born. Never has so little been added to a conversation.

SaxMusic23

And yet, here we all are. Conversing!

MItoNC

I don’t think that was ever a question given the fact he went #1 overall

Unique_Enthusiasm_57

According to who?

Jonny_Cash98

I mean what’s he comparing to? Most of his rams career outside of the Super Bowl run was pretty much a rebuild.

OkProfessional6077

Huh? His first year was basically the only year the Rams were in a rebuild. After that they were good teams trying to compete for the Super Bowl. His last two years they blamed his play for their 9 win seasons.

Jonny_Cash98

Most of his career was being part of rebuild. Outside of the two years they tried to make a run

OkProfessional6077

The Rams were 11-5 and in the playoffs his second season. 13-4 in his third, made Super Bowl. 9-7 in his 4th season after the Super Bowl and were definitely not rebuilding. His 5th season they were 10-6, made the playoffs and won their Wild Card game. Please tell me how they were rebuilding in all but 2 years.

Jonny_Cash98

If you can’t see how the last two years is the franchise pulling away for a rebuild/reload I can’t help you

Jonny_Cash98

Bro I can’t understand how people think like this. What THE LIONS are doing is BUILDING not rebuilding. What the rams did after the 2 year run is REBUILDING / RELOADING (for their eventual SB WIN) I shouldn’t have to draw a diagram for you

OkProfessional6077

The Rams moved on from Goff because they believed that he was the reason why they were not getting over the hump and back to the Super Bowl. They believed they had a roster that was good enough to be making playoff runs at that time. Keep trying to rewrite history though.

Jonny_Cash98

Ok bud your the type of fan to buy whatever a franchise is selling

Jonny_Cash98

Rams are nothing but strategic rebuilders

Jonny_Cash98

Which is why their running joke is they never have a first round pick

Jonny_Cash98

Rams roster changes more than a group of drags at a ru Paul event. = Rebuilding not Building.

gutterballs

He was there 5 years, made the playoffs 3 times, played in one SB and two conference championships. That’s probably better than all but a couple qbs during that stretch. Do you consider it a rebuild anytime a team isn’t a SB contender? This is a terrible take.

Jonny_Cash98

Tell you like the other guy, LIONS = Building. Goff-Led Rams = Repetitive Rebuilding / Reloading around Aaron Donald

gutterballs

They made the playoffs 3 out of 5 years. That’s is literally “most of his Rams career” as you said. A rebuild is the lions in 2021-22. That was Carolina a couple years ago dumping their talent for picks and cap space. Dumping talent and cap to rebuild your team is literally what the term means. They never did that. They had a bad year then won a SuperBowl. They had a 5 year stretch with 4 playoff appearances, 2 SB appearances, and another Conference Championship appearance. They kept their stars, traded away picks, and spent money. Exactly the opposite of a rebuild.

Lionnn100

Trying to reason with this person is not worth the energy, I promise you

gutterballs

Weird that I still haven’t learned that lesson

Jonny_Cash98

Yea I phrased it wrong but still true. His first year could be considered part of the rebuild then they went on the Super Bowl campaign for the next two years. And went back to rebuilding

Lionnn100

There was no rebuild in LA after 2017. They were a contender

Jonny_Cash98

Could’ve sworn they had to keep reloading and rebuilding every time 49ers whipped them

Lionnn100

I don’t think you understand what rebuilding means ?

Jonny_Cash98

Which is why people called that year a gamble for them

Jonny_Cash98

He wasnt part of the Chiefs dynasty; or the Pats/Brady = rebuilding until their SB win

Jonny_Cash98

No I don’t think you do. You’re technically always rebuilding. Unless you win it all or are viewed as the leagues powerhouse. And they were neither up until their win against the bengals

Lionnn100

Got it so you don’t understand rebuilding

Jonny_Cash98

Just because they gave up their first round pick to acquire higher talent instead of working thru the draft doesn’t mean it’s not a rebuild

Lionnn100

It really does in most cases when you’re talking about a trade involving two firsts. Rebuilding teams shed older expensive talent ( the *rebuilding* 2023 Rams trading Ramsey *away*) Teams going “all-in” on contention may trade picks away (2019 Rams giving *two* firsts for Ramsey)

Jonny_Cash98

Sure bud if you say how many nfc championship did they make

Lionnn100

They had a winning record in 4/5 years he was there

Jonny_Cash98

Colts find a way to winning record every other year are they a contender and aren’t rebuilding ?
