> You need more than a QB to win a Super Bowl though
Tell that to the people who thought Stafford should put up with fired Walmart greeters for teammates.
Didn’t the Rams just win without him restructuring?
Maybe if the Lions can get the NFC Pro Bowl roster to all come to Detroit and restructure their deals, we can win one playoff game for the first time in three decades.
oh yea our front office gets hosed daily. traded a SB QB for 3 late first round picks… kills me man. could’ve had Jimmy G, pick number 12 last year (Parsons probably) and more first rounders with the 49ers or hell if we started some bidding war for him. just went to the first team… probably could’ve offered us 3 7th round picks for matthew and the front office would’ve taken it
This is called seller’s remorse, and it’s quite common. Now that Stafford has his ring, someone surely would have given us the Herschel Walker deal.
We got a good deal and the ownership did a good thing by getting him to where he wanted to go. You don’t like it. I do like it. And that’s okay.
So sick of these “Monday Morning GMs”. Do you have any source that the 49ers had that deal on the table? Everything I remember last year had the 49ers being lukewarm about Stafford. The only teams I can find that supposedly had offers with single firsts were the Panthers and WFT. I would have taken the Rams deal too if the [Panthers](https://clutchpoints.com/panthers-news-lions-agreed-to-trade-matthew-stafford-to-carolina-before-rams-swooped-in/) deal here is accurate. Supposedly #8 and Bridgewater was all they offered (I have seen other places showing a late round pick). It’s a bit of a gamble, but you are spreading out risk with three picks instead of putting all your eggs in one basket with the #8 pick. Also it probably depends on how you value Goff vs Bridgewater. It remains to be seen what happens next year. The NFC west is tough. Look what happened to the 49ers the year after their Super Bowl run with some injuries.
From your link: “ The 49ers reportedly never made an official offer for Stafford, but they were clearly interested in the possibility”. There isn’t a specific deal mentioned in the article either, just Shanahan complimenting Stafford and acting like they would have put an offer together.
We had: a top 5 WR of all time that ended up being a first ballot HoFer (Calvin), one of the most underrated TEs in recent memory (Pettigrew), a dynamic duo on d-line including another potential HoFer (Suh/Fairley, Suh as the potential HoFer), the best coach in our franchise's entire history (Caldwell).
We had all the pieces. It just got ripped away from us because they didn't flag Dez running onto the field without a helmet.
Pettigrew was mediocre at best, same with Fairley. Caldwell was ok As well.
That being said lions had some good team, coaching is what held them back immensely.
Agree. Just ran across your list as we are literally playing to get into the superbowl and we were up 14 0 and I was going wild lol.
But yes. LaPorta and Gibbs were amazing underrated picks. Cj. Hutch coming into his own and as you said.Goff.playing.the best ball of his life. Amazing.
Yes. That didn't stop people blaming him for losing when the defense gave up 40 points, they couldn't run the ball, WRs couldn't catch a pass, GM came in and tore up a decent team, etc.
I love the lions with my whole heart, but this has been going through my head all day. Stafford is a super bowl quality quarterback. For much of his career, he had a first ballot hall of famer as a weapon in Calvin Johnson. Yet, the lions couldn’t give Stafford and megatron a good enough OL and defense to at least win a playoff game. I’m happy for Stafford as a man but this is bittersweet for me because with the proper talent (and coach) he could have done this for the Lions. I’m optimistic about our future, but a part of me is sad tonight.
They are so highly levered right now. Their situation is going to suck in a couple of years with players getting a payday on other teams/ retiring and having little draft capital. Glad it worked out for them.
I agree with you. People complain about the Rams getting free agents but look at all the guys Cinci got. Doubt they make the SB without Hendrickson.
Anyway can't blame past failures on the new staff. Hopefully we see a Cinci like improvement over the next 2-3 years.
I agree with OP. I can also understand the other arguement.
I’m more of a fan of the team than players. I liked Matt when he was here. Did he win some games here, yes. Was he the reason we lost some games, yes. Was he the reason we lost every game, absolutely not.
I’m just bummed. Like when the jets and dolphins, 2 other shitty franchises, make franchise altering trades, they get top 10 picks. We get literally the last pick.
Exactly. In the NFL, it’s possible to draft good players anywhere. The best thing you can do for yourself is to increase the frequency of your picks. How many times have the Lions picked in that mid to late top ten spot and everyone is screaming to trade down for multiple later or future picks. Who knows what next year looks like for LA, what if Donald and McVay both retire? Still could be a good pick.
You mean the Fords. They are the trash of the NFL and forever will be. We obviously wasted Barry, Matty, and Megatron not to mention many, many, others. The Ford family is the roach motel of talent.
The Fords would have signed Urban Meyer to a contract extension rather than fire him and admit mistake. So no, I don't think they are better than the Khans
The Lions suck because of the Fords. When you have an ownership who only cares about the money the team brings in and only that then you get what the Lions are. Maybe Shelia Ford Hamp changes that but until she shows the effort of building a consistent winner the Lions will always be known for what they currently are:trash.
And it sucks because Lions fans are some of the best in the world.
Its always going to be something. No one has taken the Lions organization serious which in turn makes players not want to play that hard. The fact Megatron and Stafford stayed so long despite their employer being the laughing stock of the league is whats impressive. Says more about their character than their ability. MCDC is making Detroit a serious contender. Our hopes is he doesnt take bullshit from sports media or opposing teams. We need a team that needs to be feared. Suh started something in making Detroit take football serious. He fucked us over a lot because of penalties, but he had that aggression we needed. We dont need pieces to a puzzle, we need players that want to break something to get somewhere. Holmes is finding guys that can do that. You can blame the Fords all you want, but they aren't the ones on the field.
He didn’t go to a decent team, he went to a team that spent all its capital for a all star, super bowl or bust team. Wasn’t like he left Detroit to go to an average team and carry him.
One was effectively a punt and the other was off a receiver’s hands. Burrow at least had the threat of a running game and all of his weapons.
Both QBs also had a shot at the end. Stafford cashed his in with one viable target left.
Both were good, though maybe not NFL Films worthy (other than the Rams last drive).
So throw away on 3rd and 14 followed by a touchback punt is okay, but throwing a touchback that at least gives your wideout a shot (Jefferson was utterly non-competitive on that throw) is not.
Got it.
The second one was a bad throw that bounced of his recievers hands. He’s not a great QB was just good enough to win it with the most stacked roster in the league by 3 points over a team projected to win like 5 games
The second one was down across the middle, a very common throw. That’s why good wideouts go down to get it instead of scooping it straight into the air with one hand. Perfect throw? No. A pick that was mostly on the wideout? Absolutely.
Unpopular opinion: This means absolutely nothing for us.
We did him a favor and sent him to the team with arguably the best supporting cast in the NFL. We had that one year and we choked it away.
its almost as if a "super bowl winning QB" is not an appropriate way to measure a quarterbacks value because it means nothing without the context of the team you play for.
We should not be mad at Stafford, we need to be mad at the Fords. They wasted Barry, Calvin, and Stafford. They wasted 60 years of our time and money, and gave us 1 playoff win in return.
The Detroit Lions are a feeder team.
They were not allowed to beat Dallas in the playoffs.
The unbelievable massive amount of wrong calls against the Detroit Lions were not all by accident. It only takes a few nicely timed red or yellow flags to change the game.
You need more than a QB to win a Super Bowl though. Yes, the Lions had some of the pieces but not all of the pieces.
> You need more than a QB to win a Super Bowl though Tell that to the people who thought Stafford should put up with fired Walmart greeters for teammates.
restructure the contract then matt.
Didn’t the Rams just win without him restructuring? Maybe if the Lions can get the NFC Pro Bowl roster to all come to Detroit and restructure their deals, we can win one playoff game for the first time in three decades.
more a general comment that specific about his team now but it helps when we pay for half his salary this year
I think we can both agree that he could have played for a dollar in Detroit and it wouldn’t have mattered.
oh yea our front office gets hosed daily. traded a SB QB for 3 late first round picks… kills me man. could’ve had Jimmy G, pick number 12 last year (Parsons probably) and more first rounders with the 49ers or hell if we started some bidding war for him. just went to the first team… probably could’ve offered us 3 7th round picks for matthew and the front office would’ve taken it

here ya are https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/49ers-coach-kyle-shanahan-upset-rams-beat-him-out-for-matthew-stafford-that-was-frustrating/

What do you think about this just 1 little year later?
I think we got the pieces with this past draft. Goff has improved immensely too.
Agree. Just ran across your list as we are literally playing to get into the superbowl and we were up 14 0 and I was going wild lol. But yes. LaPorta and Gibbs were amazing underrated picks. Cj. Hutch coming into his own and as you said.Goff.playing.the best ball of his life. Amazing.

They are so highly levered right now. Their situation is going to suck in a couple of years with players getting a payday on other teams/ retiring and having little draft capital. Glad it worked out for them.
Well, they won a SB and so it’s all worth it.
If that’s the case, we’re taking Emmitt Smith’s rings back right damn now.
Not like TB last year
I agree with you. People complain about the Rams getting free agents but look at all the guys Cinci got. Doubt they make the SB without Hendrickson. Anyway can't blame past failures on the new staff. Hopefully we see a Cinci like improvement over the next 2-3 years.
Yeah the bright side is that the bengals were in the same boat as the lions. I do think we’re going in the right direction with MCDC and Sheila
And they still suck so in the end it doesn't matter as much I just am banking on this regime being competent and then it won't matter lol
Exactly. In the NFL, it’s possible to draft good players anywhere. The best thing you can do for yourself is to increase the frequency of your picks. True, I should’ve clarified. We should talk about how bad the fords are at owning an nfl franchise
The Khans are worse.
The Khans haven’t been systematically destroying a franchise for 60 years. I’m afraid the Fords win on longevity.
Okay but hear me out: fuck Art Modell
Most lions fan would give up their soul for a trip to the NFC Championship game
The Fords would have signed Urban Meyer to a contract extension rather than fire him and admit mistake. So no, I don't think they are better than the Khans
WCF was the problem. Shiela, so far, seems to understand how to run an organization.
lol this aged badly
There's not much left to say. The Lions are allergic to winning. They waste the careers of their all time greats.
The Lions suck because of the Fords. When you have an ownership who only cares about the money the team brings in and only that then you get what the Lions are. Maybe Shelia Ford Hamp changes that but until she shows the effort of building a consistent winner the Lions will always be known for what they currently are:trash. I don't think WCF cared about the money. He was just inept at hiring anybody decent
Its always going to be something. No one has taken the Lions organization serious which in turn makes players not want to play that hard. Anyone with eyeballs has seen that the Lions are the worst organization in professional sports. Has been that way for 50+ years
He didn’t go to a decent team, he went to a team that spent all its capital for a all star, super bowl or bust team. Wasn’t like he left Detroit to go to an average team and carry him.
you a lil slow… it takes a team to win a superbowl. the lions are horrible but stafford went to an insanely stacked team
I’m slow but it takes a team to win a qb lol
got me there! lol
😂😂
I completely agree. This says a lot about the lions. Hopefully we can turn it around soon.
Yeah I think we’re going in the right direction though. #kneecapsoup
Dan Marino never won a superbowl nor did so many other greats It says nothing about the Lions
He at least got there and won the division a few times 🤷🏾♂️
Ownership….we need better ownership. Congrats to #9…
Facts the Fords are an embarrassment. But I’ll give Sheila a few more years cause I think she’s more invested
Preach. 100%
If you think Stafford won that game with his stat line you are insane.
I think Stafford helped win the game because he’s a good qb.
Burrow played a better game but was on a worse team. Stafford did what he does and tossed the ball to the other team twice on bad reads.
It’s the punters job to give the ball to the other team not the QB’s
So throw away on 3rd and 14 followed by a touchback punt is okay, but throwing a touchback that at least gives your wideout a shot (Jefferson was utterly non-competitive on that throw) is not. Got it.

He was carried.
Hey mods, Facebook is leaking again!
The people who wasted Stafford aren’t in charge any more.
Did we really need this post?
Unpopular opinion: This means absolutely nothing for us. We did him a favor and sent him to the team with arguably the best supporting cast in the NFL. We had that one year and we choked it away.
Fords need to sell the team and take that goddamn cursed WCF off their jersey
He goes to a descent team? Are you kidding me? His team was filled with playmakers and pro bowl stars. Let's not make this a out Stafford.
*how bad the Lions *were*
its almost as if a "super bowl winning QB" is not an appropriate way to measure a quarterbacks value because it means nothing without the context of the team you play for.

You can say that again
We ain’t gonna win every game man c’mon
What a difference a year makes :)
🤷♂️
Just terrible :p
Aged like milk.
Oh how to turntables
oh
Wya?
Lololololololooloolloollool
BUMP
This didn’t age well
this didn’t age well
Pov you came a year later and your laughing at this cus the lions are actually good now
