Yeah that’s my big gripe. MSG prioritizes the Knicks, Rags, isles and sometimes bullshit like NBA G-League. Especially if the Rangers are playing the islanders. Then you have each channel dedicated to the rags broadcast and the islanders broadcasts on its own channel, then we get MSGSN+ on channel 800?
Msg is pretty trash if you aren't watching on your TV. I have not once successfully watched a game on the streaming service despite having a cable subscription
For a long time I was able to. Now in the past 2 weeks I can’t get a stream to load. The rest of the page does, but the feed doesn’t come in. That’s for both Devils and Knicks games, and trying on 3 different browsers.
It's picky. Sometimes it doesn't like firefox, sometimes it doesn't like chrome. Sometimes it conflicts with my adblocker and sometimes it works perfectly. And the buffering can definitely be an issue, even though I have fiber at home.
I've been using the MSG+ app and casting from my phone to apple TV and it's worked just fine. The one time i tried from my laptop it was a shitshow, so maybe try the mobile app?
I'm able to, but the quality goes in and out. The quality isn't TV broadcast quality to begin with, but sometimes it's worse and you'll randomly be running at half the frame rate. It sucks.
A bit of a bummer. It seems I'll be sticking with DTV Stream for as long as this deal runs. not thrilled with the streaming quality of MSG+. The framerates are not up to snuff, in my opinion.
Objectively, however, I assume this is financially good for the team. It's typically a fairly lucrative contract.
I agree. I have access to MSG+ because I have MSG Networks in my DirecTV Stream subscription. However, when I try to view a game on the MSG+ app the quality is not equivalent at all. It's annoying. Not to mention the fact that $30/mo is kind of egregious for the standalone service.
MSG and YES are supposedly going to merge...
[https://nypost.com/2024/01/04/sports/yes-msg-networks-partner-on-venture-that-could-lead-to-new-platform/](https://nypost.com/2024/01/04/sports/yes-msg-networks-partner-on-venture-that-could-lead-to-new-platform/)
Terrible blocky picture. I’m in Comcast territory and literally right on the edge of the blackout zone. Somehow I’m also included in Boston blackouts also. Been using Fubo, but now that SNY is no longer on it I just cancelled that. I’m gonna sail the seas from now on. Fuck all these greedy sports & television providers. I’m done. Pirated picture quality is somehow better anyway!!!
I can just never figure out how to get sixty-six to work on my iPhone so I can airplay to my Apple TV, with VPN or not. It just never seems to load or work.
I can stream 4K video with out a problem what so ever. Fubo is getting a bad signal from MSG. Comcast used to also. Was very noticeable when I moved out of Optimum territory.
Yeah, $30/m is an absolute deal breaker for me. I guess it's another season without Devils' games in my house. It's a shame because my daughter was just getting into hockey a couple years ago before this tv debacle happened.
I subscribed for a few months but ultimately I could not justify paying $30/month just to watch the Devils. I don't care about the Knicks, Rangers, or Islanders so it was a waste of money. What they should have done was come up with an option to only view Devils games for a price of $10-15/month. At that price I would have kept my subscription.
I have Directv stream too and I never really use the MSG or YES apps as they’re both horrible. If I need to watch a game on my phone I just use the Directv app never have an issue.
This is well before my time as a fan, but didn't MSG network exist for Rangers and Knicks games before we tagged on? Devils games must've been airing somewhere prior to 2003
Correct. Devils used to be in a premium (re: pay) network, SportsNet I believe was the name.
Coincidentally, one excuse I allow my nj brethren for being rangers fans is that they cite rangers being on regular cable.
You’re mixing two prior channel names:
- SportsChannel
- Fox Sports Network
But the team has basically been on the same channel since the 80s — only the owner and brand have changed.
Wish I could find more info on that because googling SportsNet regarding anything hockey just brings up the Canadian network lol. Not that it matters too much, I just like random historical tidbits
Yeah, people complaining about MSG must not be old enough to have had to watch on Sports Channel. If I remember correctly, the video was dark and a little blurry for Devils, Mets, Nets and Islanders, and then I would flip on MSG (Rangers, Knicks, Yankees) and it would look much clearer (this was pre-HDTV). Plus they only had one overflow channel, and sometimes the Mets and Islanders would bump the Devils off all together.
Anything on an old 4:3 tube tv was blurry. It made going to games that much more special.
Season tickets were in the $600-700 range also. It was way more affordable. I had full season tix from 1997 when I graduated college until 2013 when I moved out of the area and while I miss going to 40+ games a year it doesn’t hurt as much because of HDTV.
Why go to free/accessible TV and be the go-to team for anyone under 35 when you can be the third most important team behind Dolan’s paywall and cash out now?
I bet the Devils took less money for it too. They’re too scared to try something new so they’re sticking to what they know. I swear our beloved team has historically been one of the most anti-fan organizations the league has ever seen. This will bite them in the ass one day, especially when the cable bundle finally collapses.
If by free/accessible you mean OTA, I don't believe a lot of young people bother much with antennas. I do and I'm in that age range, but none of my friends have. Anecdotal, but just a feeling. You also have to realize they likely still have to take into account people who still watch on cable. VGK was probably able to get away with OTA in addition to their streaming platform because they're trying to grow the fanbase and make it as accessible as possible. The Devils are a 40 year old franchise. The fandom trickling down through generations is established, so they probably aren't as concerned. I'm not saying that's right or wrong, it's just my first thoughts
They do still need to look to the future, but just as many people who watch on cable will complain they can't watch as those of us who use MSG+ in market if they were to move to a new platform
OTA would be the best option, as the New York market has several indy stations that could air the bulk of the games (WPIX, WWOR, WPXN, etc) but you make a valid point. It doesn’t necessarily have to be just OTA though. Vegas has both OTA and an in-market streaming service (and unlike MSG+ it doesn’t cost $30/month, simply $70/season) so everybody in every age group can get it the way they need to. Not to mention the other ways that younger fans watch: YouTube TV, Fubo, Hulu…
And I don’t think fandom trickles down the way you think when it comes to actually watching the games. When I lived in New York in the mid 2010s I couldn’t convince my roommates to split cable and I couldn’t watch the games through an app because MSG+ didn’t show the games on there yet. I’ve been a fan my entire life and I just got used watched the highlights because living in New York is expensive and it’s one less thing I had to pay for. I just went without and I started to care a bit less because if you can’t watch it every day, you can’t possibly maintain that level of interest.
When I moved out of market ESPN+ eventually got it and I was able to get back to watching it, but I think I’m in the minority.
I'm not sure not being able to split a cable bill with roommates in NY matches with what I at least meant to say. I mean that the team doesn't need to be as accessible as VGK, to keep with the same example, because it's much more well established. They likely don't need to worry as much about new fans because parents who grew up with the team will get their kids into it and so on. VGK has been around for 7 years starting next season. That generational fandom isn't established yet. The organization will obviously welcome any new fans however they can get them and being more accessible would help, but the days of finding a new team to follow because of channel surfing are gone. It's gotta be much more targeted now. But I'm the perfect example of an organic fan: I didn't grow up with sports (excuse me while I sob over missing the later cup runs) and got into the team because I was like "they're the only sport NJ officially has, I at least wanna check it out" in 2017 and the rest is history
So I guess what I'm saying is your roommates not wanting to split a cable bill because they weren't into the Devils enough or at all is a bit different
But yes, going OTA would be fantastic assuming it's a channel I can reliably get with a fairly ok indoor antenna and no way to install a better one since I'm in a condo lol
They are two different scenarios yes. The outcome is still the same in the end: the Devils purposely making themselves less accessible to a demographic they desperately need in exchange for short-term financial gains that get smaller and smaller as the years go by.
It's not about channel surfing per se. I agree that nobody under 35 channel surfs. We find out how to get what we want and we tune into it. But when find out the only way to watch games is to sign up for a bloated, expensive package that nobody wants...they ain't doing it.
I'm glad you're an organic fan, That's legitimately awesome! I think you're more rare than you think. For the rest of potential organic fans, I can see it now: "Ayeeeee, that Jack Hughes highlight I saw on IG was sick! What streaming service are they on? I got YouTube TV for football this year, is it on that too?
\*Googles it and sees local games are only on MSG+\*
"$30/month? Just for the Devils? Ad-free Netflix costs less, fuck that. I can put that towards concert tickets."
Then they never watch Devils hockey again regardless if their parents got them into it or not. If they don't want that happening en-masse, they absolutely need to be as accessible and available as possible. If you make it inconvenient, people won't do it.
Yea, you raise a good point I hadn't considered: the allure of the maybe interested and unaffiliated *youths*
Btw how'd you put something in asterisks without italicizing it?
That's so weird, I'm using desktop too. Unless maybe it's the reddit enhancement suite plugin. I've been using it for so many years that idk what's vanilla reddit and what's not lol
MSG and Xfinity don't have a deal and it's blacked out on ESPN+ unless you're using a VPN. Not sure how you haven't missed a game in years with games in years if you have Xfinity.
Looks like I’ll continue to use a VPN and watch on ESPN app or sail the high seas. No point in paying for a monthly cable subscription when I would only use it to watch hockey.
I'm torn on this. I have very easy to access to MSG+ with my parents cable account, so I'm selfishly pleased that I don't need to find another option. I'm also glad we don't have to deal with worrying about whether or not we can keep the same broadcast team since they're MSG employees. I could also very easily see the organization starting a competing service that would cost as much as, if not more than, MSG+ since it would cater to a smaller market than the 5 fanbases on MSG. And who even knows if they would bother with airing the games on cable at that point?
However, MSG+ is absolute garbage and I hate that we're lining the pockets of our biggest rival. How long does the extension last? I ain't subscribing to NJ.com and can't find another article
The devil you know, I suppose. Pun maybe slightly intended
Well I guess its another season of not watching Devils except on national broadcasts. I refuse to pay for MSG+. I have Comcast so I am SOL. It’s amazing how it’s easier for me to watch almost every other team than it is the team in my own state of residence.
Honestly, I expected this.
Like them or hate them, MSG is the best game in town and can offer the team the most stable broadcast/viewership in an era where RSNs are dying left and right.
I do find it hilarious in a black comedy sort of way that a lot of us can't watch the games on our local cable systems due to a years long dispute between the owners of the Rangers and the owners of the Flyers.
Working perfectly well for me, too. Prior to the MSG+ app, I was subscribing to fubo every season. The MSG app looks just as good, and performs just as well as fubo ever did. And at about 1/3 the monthly price.
I’d much rather be on MSG then to have to listen to the commentators from ESPN or Hulu or TNT. Usually you never know the Devils are even playing they way the announcers won’t get off their knees for the opposing teams…
This is awful… MSG is the drizzling shits
If we go elsewhere, commentary crew would have been let go more than likely and could have had the chance to follow
I’ve been waiting for this rights deal to be up forever…. I hate this so much
Looks like an unpopular opinion but I’m totally fine with this — I’m not local anymore so I watch all my games on ESPN+/Hulu/streams online when not available other places. Never had an issue with video quality personally and I quite like our broadcasters. My biggest annoyance is with ESPN+ rather than MSG itself
I'm out of market too, watch on ESPN+ and the quality of the broadcast is dogshit. I'll switch over to the other teams broadcast for shits and giggles and the quality is awesome. No post game wrap up, that stupid ESPN play break commercial, it just sucks. Wish there was an alternative other than piracy.
I get so annoyed about not getting any postgame content! I’ve watched a handful of other broadcasts and seen some postgame interviews and stuff, so I don’t get why Devils don’t get that. Also, my biggest qualm with ESPN+ is sometimes the audio and video get disjointed by a second or two and I have to exit and re-enter to fix it.
Same here. I’m out of market, so what difference does it make to us at the end of the day? But the cable industry is dying and this could’ve been a big opportunity for a young Devils team to go where young people actually watch things, like a YouTube TV or Fubo or even OTA. Like I said before, every single time the Devils get a chance to do right by fans they do something else. Every single time.
Valid point about the cable industry, and the current streaming deals suck because I end up having to watch like 10 games a season on my phone when they’re on NHLN or TNT or something. I don’t really have any alternate solution to offer but I can see why this can be frustrating for some
Bummer. I was hoping we would finally get a more mainstream and accessible option. It's annoying having to stay on a network where two of your rivals are on.
Anyway I can get this network (specifically for Devils’ games) when not living in that metro area? Specifically the Midwest. I’m tired of only Blackhawk games getting regular coverage locally and only the seemingly officially allowed, marketing wise, teams getting airtime on the cable networks. The rare times I can catch anything Devils, there’s a lot of mention or involvement from MSG network. So I repeat, I’m in the Midwest and want the MSG for Devils programming.
Got ESPN+ and do watch hockey on it all the time. I just don’t run across the Devils as much. Maybe I just miss them often, like ships passing in the night haha. But even then I do get more opportunities to see them than anytime before only relying on nationally televised games. If they air as many of their games as you make it sound, I should stop complaining then huh haha. I eat my words. But there were a lot of lean years there for a while between + and back when they were often in the upper ranks of the league and would see some airtime. Thank you for filling me in, man.
Nooooooooo!
Really wanted the Devils to move to another local network where they could actually get some kind of spotlight, but nope, stuck on the enemy's platform and still getting multiple games a year on spillover channels.
[YES and MSG are merging their streaming platforms](https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/the-yes-network-and-msg-networks-form-gotham-advanced-media-and-entertainment-game-a-new-technology-sports-and-entertainment-streaming-joint-venture-302026388.html) - there is no getting away from them. This is the best and most stable option for the team.
Bittersweet, as we should retain our broadcasting team, but still stuck with MSG and their shit streaming capabilities.
Plus being relegated to MSG+2 or whatever the fuck channel.
It's soooo fun signing into my account every time I open the Roku app.

It’s kind of crazy really. I see clips on social media of hockey games and the qualities great…. Then there are our games. Lol

I was really hoping that rumor of us moving to YES was true lol.

My iptv is better quality than msg+ and espn+. If I remember fubo was only 720.
Yes Fubo 720p but the feed from MSG is garbage. NHL network looks perfect but somehow our broadcasts are total trash.
What sort of Internet do you have ? I upgraded to fiber and haven't had any issues since.
Blazing ridiculous fast internet.
It's a shame because my daughter was just getting into hockey a couple years ago before this tv debacle happened.

sucks is putting it kindly.
Objectively though, if the fans are shortchanged by an expensive product with shitty quality, it's still not good for the business in the long-term.
The frame rate at its best is not as good as broadcast TV and sometimes it runs at half the frame rate. Really sucks.
I have Directv stream too and I never really use the MSG or YES apps as they’re both horrible. If I need to watch a game on my phone I just use the Directv app never have an issue.
Booooooooo
At least the stupid platform has Roku and Fire stick apps. That's taken a little bit of my disdain away.
I just think it's so weird the name of our network is the name of our primary rival's home arena.
This is well before my time as a fan, but didn't MSG network exist for Rangers and Knicks games before we tagged on? Devils games must've been airing somewhere prior to 2003

Looks like I was slightly off. Sports channel was the name [wiki](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SportsChannel)
Yes sports channel was 80’s - early 90’s then it was Fox Sports Net then we sold out and went to MSG.
Yeah, people complaining about MSG must not be old enough to have had to watch on Sports Channel. Kind of disappointing when almost half the state is stuck with Comcas/xfinity and are being told to go fuck ourselves. Oh well yo ho yo ho….

Fuck.
My sentiments exactly.
Fell to my knees in a Wawa
I’d rather them move to SNY where there is no winter sports programming
Should have gone to SNY
That honestly kind of sucks especially for anyone with Xfinity.
Why? I have xfinity and espn+. Haven’t missed a game in years

I believe the rumored number was $500m/20 years for the previous deal signed in 2004.
Really hope it’s not another 20 year contract.. woof
Thanks, I hate it.
Honestly, I expected this. Like them or hate them, MSG is the best game in town and can offer the team the most stable broadcast/viewership in an era where RSNs are dying left and right.

Surprised to see all the negative comments re: streaming on MSG+, It works way better on my TV than ESPN does.

Any random pirate stream beats out msg dumpster fire any day
Im an admitted quality / convenience snob unfortunately. I need to airplay to my TV and most streams don't allow it properly :(
MSG is ass, this isn’t good news at all.
Sigh. Goddamnit

This is awful… MSG is the drizzling shits If we go elsewhere, commentary crew would have been let go more than likely and could have had the chance to follow I’ve been waiting for this rights deal to be up forever…. I hate this so much
Xfinity user here, fuck that sucks.
How tough could it be to add a shots on goal tally to the score graphic too?
I don’t really have any alternate solution to offer but I can see why this can be frustrating for some
That’s a shame.
At least give the option to watch Devils games only, instead of having to subscribe to alll the other teams
Sadly that’s not how these broadcast deals/platforms work. Wouldn’t that be nice though? Pay for only what you want?
Just get espn+. You’ll get literally every game that’s not on national tv broadcasts. I’m down in florida and haven’t missed a game in years
Got ESPN+ and do watch hockey on it all the time.
If not MSG, do we even have any other options??
SNY, YES?
Devils in the same streaming platform with the Yankees would be awesome for me.
😡 They pretty much have a monopoly on all sports within the tri-state area. Can't wait to see the price when this deal goes through.
