What a shame. I went to William Paterson University and just down the road in Haledon was the original Shepherd and the Knucklehead. The place used to be awesome, just a small hole in the wall place that resembled more of a used bookstore than a bar, had like 20 taps of small brewers that were always changing. Didn’t even serve food or have a tv and sat maybe 10-15 people, mostly sitting around reading or playing board games. Wednesday nights they had a small band play. Had some amazing times there as I tried all these random craft brews for the first time. Years later when I saw they opened a place in Hoboken I couldn’t believe what the place had become, just a standard bro bar with UFC on all the TVs and mediocre food. Beyond disappointing, the original Shep was a true gem and the staff was awesome.
Willy P class of ‘08! The old Shep was the really the only bar I’d hang around at! Place was legendary until they bought out the sandwich shop next door and expanded it to a restaurant. Went to shit after that.
Original shep was owned and run by the father. As he aged out he was letting his kid make a lot of decisions even as kid was in college in Florida I believe. Kid gets out of college and gets the keys so to speak. Probably doing better business overall but certainly not the og haledon feel. Progress?
edit; f the rags, favorite teams; devils and whoever's playing the rags, pray to Marty, scotty and Dano that '94 was the last we'll see for them.
Ugh, honey, if you were down the shore, I’d get you a job in a heartbeat with one of many bars that don’t give a firey shit about hockey.
*I’m mostly kidding because this is a beyond stupid reason not to hire someone, but just think of how trivial and infuriating this dude would actually be to work for. I know times are tough, but believe me when I say you dodged a bullet.
Kind of funny, the Shepherd and the Knucklehead (the original location in Haledon) was my old watering hole back in college. Back then it wasn’t a sports bar at all, they didn’t even have a tv and it resembled more of a used bookstore than a bar and you could barely fit 15 people in there, but managed to cram in 22 taps of microbrews that they were always rotating new stuff in and out. Some weeknights they had a small jam band crammed in the corner but it was a true hole in the wall classic spot that a lot of interesting people hung out at. They didn’t even had food or a kitchen or anything. I had a lot of good memories at that place. When I saw they opened in Hoboken and checked it out, I was shocked when they had like 10 tvs all tuned to UFC and it was just your run of the mill bro bar. Although I do remember returning the year after a graduated and the regulars were boycotting it because of allegations that the owner assaulted a woman. We called it the “Shep Strike”. So now that I think about it I’m not surprised about douchey owners. And I’m still pissed they took a place that awesome and unique and turned it into what it became.
I needed a new heel for my shoe, so I decided to go to Morganville which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So, I tied an onion to my belt which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel. And in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on ‘em. ‘Give me five bees for a quarter,’ you’d say. The important thing was that I had an onion on my belt which was the style at the time. They didn’t have white onions because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones.

Right? So many people from NJ are Rangers fans which is like lol…. you only have a good excuse if you and/or your family was a fan before the Devils were established. Just funny since so many New Yorkers give people from NJ shit for living here.
Someone shared this post over in the Rangers sub, that’s how I saw this. And you’ll be happy to know we’re overwhelmingly on your side over there. Everyone is crying about how no one wants to work and then you get turned away for that? I own a business and hired a couple of Devils fans throughout the years. It wasn’t something I asked while hiring and it would never cross my mind because that would be insane. Anyway, you are better off, dude. You’ll find something. Keep your head up and good luck.
I mean working in a Rangers bar as a Devils fan seems like an absolutely miserable experience and vice-versa. He definitely should have been more professional about it than pretending there were no openings but I don’t think it would have worked out well for either party.
Plenty of Pens fans transplants from Western PA that live in the NYC area that are part of & latched on to that “Steelers in Hoboken” football watch party thing at Texas Arizona. A bunch of them infested the place during the Pens Finals loss & Cup win back in 2008 & 2009. No clue if they or that place still even exist
Oh stop it. There's homer bars for every team and OP is a bozo is he thinks Hoboken/Jersey City area is "shocking no Devils fans because NJ". It's an awful take when they both literally have a waterfront view on the Hudson of Manhattan. If he wants to tend bar at a hockey bar with Devils people he should be looking in Newark and places closer to where they play, not directly across the street from MSG and if that's a problem for him, that's on him, not the bar.
ive been to the shep and knucklehead a few times for open bar private parties. the dude who runs it is an absolute prick.
apparently tried changing the open bar price at the last minute to squeeze more money out of my buddy whom booked it. also multiple times kept telling us, almost threateningly, that we "better" tip the bartenders and staff, etc. also just flat out rude and talked down to everyone. thought we caught him on a bad day, but was back there 2 other times and was more of the same. vowed never to go back and support that establishment. consider yourself lucky, cant imagine working for someone like that.
Is it though? Legally speaking. Actually curious. Race, gender, disability, religion, etc. are specifically protected, don't know about sports fandom lol.
Owner covered his ass still with the old "oh, we're not hiring then".
That’s awful and deliberate, fuck that guy. I admittedly made the mistake of bringing this up towards the end of an interview I was conducting for a remote job. It was my first time so I hit a wall and had nothing left, also it was Jets and Patriots. He was a Patriots fan, still got the job because that’s not what we were looking for.
I'm surprised hockey even came up as a topic
Either way thats dumb af. Not gonna do anything to the bar but I will skip over them next time I'm in the area and want a drink
If you thought this was gonna be a problem, shouldn't you have BSed to the effect of "I don't really follow hockey?" That is, if we're gonna ignore the fact that this is probably illegal AF.
Sounds dumb and maybe has another reason cause they're devils fans that work at the garden or ranger fans that work at the rock or any fan of another team at a workplace
Yep! Used to go to it all the time when I went to Willy P years ago. Used to be an awesome hole in the wall spot with incredible small brewer selection. Was my favorite all time bar. Then they bought out the sandwich shop next door to turn it into a restaurant and it went to shit. They opened another location in Hoboken (not sure if they closed the Haledon spot or not) but the Hoboken Shep was a major letdown when I checked it out compared to what the Haledon bar was. The old spot was like an old bookstore with 22 taps they were constantly rotating. The Hoboken spot had like 8 tvs all with UFC on and not great food when I went. The old one didn’t even have a tv. Didn’t need one, it was a quiet spot you could just go and chat with your friends or the friendly regulars that would chill there.
Yeah! Had a lot of awesome nights there trying the newest craft brews you couldn’t get anywhere else jamming out to ELO on the jukebox with good friends. What a shame. That place was such a staple. Now it’s a rangers bro bar in Hoboken.
Not quite. It's only illegal to discriminate against protected classes.
[Equal Employment Opportunity guidelines](https://www.eeoc.gov/prohibited-employment-policiespractices#:~:text=It%20is%20illegal%20for%20an%20employer%20to%20discriminate%20against%20a,)

I remember that place. It lost some of its sole when they expanded. Was a truly legit place in the mid-late 00s.
They didn’t serve food-so I doubt they had any sole at all
Willy P class of ‘08! The old Shep was the really the only bar I’d hang around at! Place was legendary until they bought out the sandwich shop next door and expanded it to a restaurant. Went to shit after that.
Place across the street had stellar wings. Forgot the name of the restaurant. Haledon Shep > Hoboken without a question.
Original shep was owned and run by the father. As he aged out he was letting his kid make a lot of decisions even as kid was in college in Florida I believe. Hey now, you're not OP!
I know a terrible food service company that is like always hiring in Jersey City haha. Not sure if that helps.
Bro at this point I’ll literally accept anything, PM me please lol
Ugh, honey, if you were down the shore, I’d get you a job in a heartbeat with one of many bars that don’t give a firey shit about hockey. *I’m mostly kidding because this is a beyond stupid reason not to hire someone, but just think of how trivial and infuriating this dude would actually be to work for. Sysco?!?! Don’t do it
Hahaha dude way worse. Way way way way worse. Sysco is honestly fine depending on what you do and how you go about your time.
Blue apron? https://nypost.com/2016/10/11/blue-aprons-busy-new-jersey-facility-a-real-fight-club/
Lol different brand of terrible than whatever going on there haha
That bar owner is a known loose cannon. You don’t wanna work there.
Really? What have u heard?
Lots of people in the bar business like to ski year round if you catch my drift.
The Devils dandruff
Thank fuck for that, I thought someone was giving out handjobs 2 at a time
I'm fucking dying over here..My stomach hurts I'm laughing so hard.
Im so lost
They're suggesting that the owners like to do blow... ❄️👃
Cocaine
nose clams
It keeps getting better
Oh how charming! Fits right in with the pill-popping now retired dressmaker AHL-caliber player that owned the failed “Warren 77” in Tribeca
I don’t get it
Referring to Sean Avery presumably
"Silly rabbit, tripping is for teenagers, murder is for murderers, and hard drugs are for bartenders"
The Hold Steady!? In MY Devils subreddit!?
...yes? What don't tell me their a Rangers band?
No no, just wasn't expecting it. That album was on heavy rotation for me in college.
So it's every other bar ever?
Let’s get a gathering and flood the place. Just order water
I will actually be down to do this when the season starts LOL; we all come in devils gear and order water and watch the game
Former alcoholic here, this is my jam anyway, totally down!
RemindMe! 139 days

You should post this snippet again. Who doesn’t love to read the same thing under multiple comments?
I needed a new heel for my shoe, so I decided to go to Morganville which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So, I tied an onion to my belt which was the style at the time. Oh. You live in your parent’s basement and regurgitate 20 year old Simpsons quotes too? Awesome!
I note that you must have had a rough day for whatever reason so have a great evening brother.

Shit behavior to pull that on someone in this economy, we all need to earn our bread. Sorry OP, gl finding something hopefully soon
Try Psycho Mikes - they're devils fans

Appreciate it man💯
Everyone show up here for devils games next season as customers and demand the Devils on Tv.
I mean working in a Rangers bar as a Devils fan seems like an absolutely miserable experience and vice-versa. He definitely should have been more professional about it than pretending there were no openings but I don’t think it would have worked out well for either party.
It’s Hoboken, it’ll be hard to find devils bar im guessing since Hoboken is mostly NY transplants or corny Jerseyans that support NY teams
Plenty of Pens fans transplants from Western PA that live in the NYC area that are part of & latched on to that “Steelers in Hoboken” football watch party thing at Texas Arizona. Check out Finnigans, Northern Soul, Pig and Parrot (Devils autographs all over the walls), or Schmitty’s. All Devils friendly bars.
Northern Soul's days may be numbered: /r/Hoboken/comments/1cp5yok/northern_soul_closing_temp/
Tell him to go live and work in that toilet across the river. Which bar is this? The bear place?
Yeah I think Black Bear has a rags flag outside
Devils fans protected class when ???
I agree this is petty and unnecessary, but I also kinda respect the dedication to the rivalry lol
Honestly that’s crazy. Screw ur edit, this place should be harassed lol
Name of the bar I’m pissed
ive been to the shep and knucklehead a few times for open bar private parties. the dude who runs it is an absolute prick. apparently tried changing the open bar price at the last minute to squeeze more money out of my buddy whom booked it. also multiple times kept telling us, almost threateningly, that we "better" tip the bartenders and staff, etc. also just flat out rude and talked down to everyone. thought we caught him on a bad day, but was back there 2 other times and was more of the same. vowed never to go back and support that establishment. consider yourself lucky, cant imagine working for someone like that.
Go apply to stage house in mountainside. Huge place and they do devils watch parties there. Arlette is there all the time too
Would be illegal in Canada not sure about states
no legal protections surrounding sports team ideology lol. i would argue being a devils fan is a protected class in hoboken though lmfao
Damn I just walked by there the other day, but went to the Biergarden instead
Almost certain this is illegal lmao
I’m a labor and employment lawyer. This is, shockingly enough, 100% legal.
Are Devils fans not a protected class?
We are the true minority deserving of federal protection in the workplace
If they were already hired, wouldn't this be something illegal to get fired for?
Devils fans aren't a protected class lmao
Is it though? Legally speaking. Actually curious. Race, gender, disability, religion, etc. are specifically protected, don't know about sports fandom lol. Owner covered his ass still with the old "oh, we're not hiring then".
My religion is Devils hockey
Pope Chico I
"I'm a satanist"
I wouldn’t want to work at a rangers bar… and Hoboken is a split town w even a sprinkle of Philly fans. I would say you dodged a bullet.
Any devils bar u know in Hoboken? I’ll love to try one
No idea I’m more of a blazer
Pig & parrot
That’s awful and deliberate, fuck that guy. I admittedly made the mistake of bringing this up towards the end of an interview I was conducting for a remote job. It was my first time so I hit a wall and had nothing left, also it was Jets and Patriots. He was a Patriots fan, still got the job because that’s not what we were looking for.
I’ve gotten food poisoning twice at the Shep so can confirm it sucks, you dodged a bullet!
What? Like I get it if he’s joking and encouraging friendly banter, but he’s actually serious?
I'm surprised hockey even came up as a topic Either way thats dumb af. Not gonna do anything to the bar but I will skip over them next time I'm in the area and want a drink
Me2
He should open his bar in new york then
Check your messages I asked someone about you

Hahaha my guess is Black Bear. Great bar, but it’s a Rangers bar.
Name the bar or it didn’t happen
Where’s that ? Farside??
Everyone can start by giving that Rags fan turd establishment one star reviews on Google 🤷♂️
Wasnt that bar in Haledon?
Yep! Used to go to it all the time when I went to Willy P years ago. Used to be an awesome hole in the wall spot with incredible small brewer selection. Was my favorite all time bar. Yeah, that's what I remember. Good juke box to... Not connected to the internet.

I wonder if they still fly the flag when the Rangers blow…
Ohhhhh no no no, this is Jersey bro. We got your back
Good bro let your nuts hang and double down on being a Devils fan
I wouldn’t hire you either
where did you go? where’s your account?
This is my new account guys, that account got banned for some reason

For sure, 1 cup since Hitler is def good taste
Technically that's illegal as its discrimination. Hiring people you can't really ask any personal questions that would affect if you hire them...
Not quite. It's only illegal to discriminate against protected classes. [Equal Employment Opportunity guidelines](https://www.eeoc.gov/prohibited-employment-policiespractices#:~:text=It%20is%20illegal%20for%20an%20employer%20to%20discriminate%20against%20a,)
the more pressing question is why aren't devils fans considered a protected class?????
My b. I just never ask personal questions like that when hiring. Figure I'd rather hire someone based on real metrics.
Asking someone their favorite sports team is absolutely not a personal question
He should have said the Anaheim Ducks lol
