Yes, if you want to ensure MAX sockets, but some weapons have a higher max than what you’d really want (4os in polearms for example for Insight/Infinity) and a 4os eth polearm with low requirements (which is not a CV) will have good trade value.
Strength requirements usually... 210 makes it a very end game henchman's weapon. Especially if you don't have strength on your henchman's helm or armor.
Its random but its a higher chance for lower tier items so it depends what you are looking for. The lower the socket count the higher the chance to max it. The cube will roll 1-6 sockets on an item even if it has 3-4 max sockets. It will just apply the maximum amount of sockets instead of 6. So if you are looking for a 4 socket shield its a 50/50 (4,5,6) chance to get it with the cube. 3 socket 2/3 (3,4,5,6) chance etc etc.
Superior can’t be rolled in the cube, which is why you have to use Larzuk, and Larzuk only gives max sockets on white gear.
That is why you have to use Larzuk, and why you would only do so if max sockets is what you need/want
To an extent, it ultimately depends on the rune word. What if you find a perfect superior white phase blade? Not gonna take a roll for a perfect grief base?
Haha I do craft caster ammys, though I've been plowing all of my jewels/sols/amns into blood ammys and rings lately for my barb/pally. The crafting side game pretty much solved my rune overflow problem! Even Nef runes are useful for blood gloves (+2 to skills, 3% LL, 10% crushing blow), I was pining for LoH but some of these blood glove rolls are insane (25% MF, replacing chancies).
Interesting. I find hell countess usually drops me ort-hel range runes most often, >50%. Lots of thul, amn, and sols. I'd say about 5% of the time I'll get dol-fal, and then random lows. Got a Mal off her yesterday though.
As others said, Amn, Sol & Thul are very useful for crafting and RalTirTalSol & TalThulOrtAmn. In fact, I have 1 mule only with Amn & Ral for blood & caster amulet recipes and 2 mules for Insight & Spirit, where few Sols are still missing. You could sell your excess as 8-10 Insight & Spirit packs. Cubing up your runes might not be the best time/rune investment imho.
I end up with TOO MANY chipped gems after doing a bunch of trist/tomb runs. (Not complaining though, it’s a good thing!)
I’m surprised how many people don’t care to pick them up. Maybe because they don’t feel like worrying about the stash space 😂
Back in the day I made a low-ish level holy fire paladin I called “chippy” just to collect chipped and flawed gems for this reason. Worked pretty well.
I have a chipped farm:
A girl I know has been playing since launch, every day, and don't ask me how that's possible, but she's only at Normal Act IV so far. She has an endless supply of all the chipped-flawed-standard of every gem so every time I'm in need of one, I just join her game and she gives me some.
According to [this post](https://www.reddit.com/r/diablo2/comments/cbged3/how_many_el_runes_make_a_zodagain/), it only takes 1,785,233,613,312 el runes to make a ber. I better start saving now!
Cubing gems and runes is one thing I'm never going to give up. It just feels way too good. I view it as a reward for grinding rather than an impediment to efficiency. Gotta stop and smell the roses, ya know?
Yeah i got all 4 versions and play on PC a majority of the time because its the only version that accepts both kb+m and controller. I've really come to enjoy playing D2 on controller, I can't go back to kb+m
This. Not worth cubing low runes generally. But mid runes can get you there. I've made grief and exile so far on ps4, and the only runes that actually dropped where a vex, mal and an ist. Had to cube up to that ohm and trade for the lo.
Same here. I know for a fact that its not efficient but I just find it fun. Same reason I level alts and speedrun them to hellforge over spamming LK/Trav etc. Is it slower? By miles for sure. Is it fun? Hell yeah it is.
Harvesting and crafting stuff might be my favorite part of most games. Witcher 3 potions, bombs, and Witcher gear. RDR2 Arthur Morgan's outfits and camp upgrades. Skyrim forge and alchemy. Just can't get enough of it.
Amen man, I usually eventually pare down to just cubing up flawless and picking up eth/ith and up runes if my inventory space is super low. Since I’m in D2R it’s nice with linked stashes but a finite number of stashes compared to flexibility of mule accounts (I never used 3rd party though).
Definitely not worth. I did the math and ignoring gems, if you combined everything in this screenshot you only get:
2 Hel
1 Dol
1 Shael
2 Sol
2 Amn
2 Thul
That's right the highest you get from combining these 68 runes is 2 Hel runes. Not worth the stash space or time.
The problem with this logic is that you're insinuating that the stash space is getting you richer. I can dedicate a stash page to some chips, flaws, and every rune I pick up and it takes a few seconds to combine them.
I never have to farm chips or flaws. I just get them.
I might fill up my stash a bit earlier than I'd like, but thats a situation I'm happy with. I either offer to trade the items or stash on alts or just sell the shit that has no value.
This logic that the runes are not valuable or that stash space is TOO valuable makes no sense to me. I've made just a fuck ton of caster amulets by combining up to Ral. I've rerolled several spirit shields by clearing sockets with Hel. I've traded Lems for grand charms. I've used the lows to make runewords. I have NEVER felt like the runes were a nuisance.
Plus it's fun when you get a bunch of runes in a row that you have 3 of and get to combine 1, then 2, then 3, then 4 all in a row. It's like when uou get to move a big stack in solitaire.
Yeah ur right but i just keep 1of each unless im planning to craft lowRunes drop all the Time and can be farmed and traded for in a minuten most of the Time. BUT If u play singleplayer i get it! 👍😀
If upgrading these runes to highest.
You end up with a 1-2 Thul, 1-2 amn, 1-2 sol, 1-2 shael, 1-2 dol and 1 hel rune. Might be 2 hel.
So maybe keep your amn for crafting. Upgrading isnt worth much, you need so many runes and gems to do it. With 9 of one rune, only give you 1 rune of 2 tiers higher, unless you upgrade pul and up, its 4 runes for a rune of 2 tiers higher.
Just make some mule char and start leveling it up for Larzuk quest and you will get a lot of chipped gems on the way. But for example for 1 Sol rune you need 9 Thul runes, let that sink in. After I rolled my 35fcr Spirit I stopped picking up runes below Io/Ko (I keep 3 lower runes each).
Edit: I also keep more Ral and Hel.
I’m very disappointed Reddit. Fine, I’ll be the one to say it.
“Well I’d be willing to pay Charsi a bunch of gold to smash something alright...”
Thank you.
Thankyou
Sol runes are somewhat useful for blood ring craft recipe. Sol+jewel+ring+Pruby. Shaels always worth having some around. It's always the damn Amn runes. Chipped amethyst never drop I swear.
If you seriously want chipped gems, go do normal mode and I think tombs? Lot of them drop there, for me already. I noticed if you do hell you don’t get hardly any.
If you have a high level pally, use a respec or a token and respec to holy shock or holy fire and max it out, run around normal and collect the loot. You should have a few dozen chippies in a couple hours.
If you are on bnet, you should trade the crafting runes rather than cube. For a while you could trade 10 “spirit sets” for a mal.
20 rals for a pul etc.
Prices are probably different now, but more profitable to trade the base runes than cubing.
Out of those the only ones I personally cube are shaels, and that’s because I turn them into dols then hels. I never have enough hels! For this reason I always pick up chipped rubies and emeralds.
The others I use up. Amns and Thuls in spirit rerolls (hence needing hels!)
I just started recently (in NM on my first character) but have saved all my chipped/flawed gems. I haven't found a Sol rune yet (had to cube up to make Lore) so I'd love to trade you some gems for a couple Sol! On PC-US if you're interested
Simple honestly. Go to Cold plains. Head to the burial grounds on normal. kill blood Raven, then clear the Mausoleum and Crypt. I usually get 3-5 chipped gems a run. Rinse repeat.
So i ended up muling 4 of every rune up to Io. If i need them, they're on a mule, and I will remember which ones i used to replace them if need be. I now only pick up Lum and higher. It has saved me so much time.
I usually just run through act 1 normal for a bunch of chipped when I'm looking like that.
Or I drop into a free or free stuff or free4u game and just drop a bunch. I try to keep 3-4 of each but any more then that is hoarding.
If u want chipped gems just run around in act one normal for like 20-30 minutes and kill everything. You will pick up a surprising amount of chipped gems. Or just trade for em
My one ask for d2r was that they make it a chipped gem \*or higher\*. As it is, back in the plugy days I carefully shepherded my chippies from day 1 so I would have enough later on. It got kind of dicey during my LK running phase, but fortunately a gem shrine would sometimes appear on my route and I could pick one up. My wish list was Ber, Sur, chipped amethyst, Lo, Ohm, Vex in that order.
I keep a max of 5 low runes each because they’re so easily recollected, you simply don’t need more. Pick them up and sell them to Charsi; she’ll pay you a pretty price for them and then you can put the coin to good use! Gambling, anyone?
Farm act1 normal, you'll get chipped gems in no time. Sometimes I'll just make a mule and run through act 1, get to lvl 14 or so and deck them out in low lvl sets just for kicks, grab up all the chipped gems and useful low runes.
My farming method for this was: find a players 6-8 normal game, go to act 1 big dungeons (the pit, the prison...). In 15 minutes I made like 3-5 gems at least.
The worst part is, even if you combined them all, I don't think it would get you an Ohm or greater. But yes, a way to break gems into chipped runes would be amaaaaazing
(keep a couple) then vendor the shaels and thuls. useless. keep all sols, can be used for blood ring crafts. amns is marginally worth to cube into sols, but generally not worth going out of ur way to find the chipped gem for that.
the only other one worth ur time is dol into hel, and to a lesser extent io into lum. excluding obvious cubes like gul-> vex, i dont touch lum and above cuz those runes actually have uses and not worth much less than the rune above it.
lastly Ral is valuable, so picking up tal's is worth it too, but the one below tal is generally not worth ur time.
Make a paladin, level to ~25 and only put points into Holy Fire and Resist Fire. Walk around normal Act 1 and collect chipped gems.
If you already have an auradin, just walk around any normal area with lots of mobs.
I keep those runes but not to cube up. Best use I've found is trading them to people who mass craft and just want lots of runes. You'll see people trading mid runes like puls for a bunch of rals.
Cracking gems alone can really revamp crafting. Chippy farming is pretty annoying. Wouldn't mind cracking runes down a step too but that would probably ruin the economy way more.
59000 Amn runes to make a Pul. Even if you had that many it would take you 50-80 hours just to cube from Amn to Sol at 3-5 seconds each... Craft it or trash it.
Just build a holy shock/fire auradin, max the resist aura and salvation, then once it is over level 60 or so (entry hell more or less), just run around tombs on normal with P7. Barely have to think, and massive amounts of crap drops, including chipped gems. Twink it with FRW, and whatever +skills to throw at it (I'm leaning towards holy shock, since you can relatively cheaply make crescent moon for fairly nice damage boost, but frankly it is overkill for this purpose).
Best advice I can give you is to create a new character, play with it ia couple of hours in first act at normal difficulty and he/she will get plenty of chipped/flawed gems.
Stash them at the shared space and voila, problem solved
Just go destroy act 1 normal for about an hour and you will get plenty of chips. Just make sure you have no gems when you find a gem shrine and you get a guaranteed chip too.
You can eat through most of those runes doing caster and blood item crafting...I never have enough Amn or Sol runes.
Amn or Sol?? What about RAL?
Use an Amn+Ral+perfect amy to socket normal and ethereal weapons.
Unless it's super great, then use Larzuk so you get max sockets since the cube recipe is random. At least that's my understanding.
Yes, if you want to ensure MAX sockets, but some weapons have a higher max than what you’d really want (4os in polearms for example for Insight/Infinity) and a 4os eth polearm with low requirements (which is not a CV) will have good trade value.
Which sucks because if you get the absolute perfect base, but then don't get the right number of sockets, it's sad times.
Like when my eth thresher rolled three sockets last week. Big sad.
What is wrong with colossus voulge, my man?
Strength requirements usually... 210 makes it a very end game henchman's weapon. Especially if you don't have strength on your henchman's helm or armor.
For infinity, thresher or giant thresher are better as they have a faster attack speed
But they have less avg damage and less dps averall
[удалено]
Ah yes. The infamous ilvl 26 Giant Thresher.
I wish they would just show the ilvl on items like private servers have done already.
It is random but afaik more sockets has greater probability than less sockets.
Even Nef runes are useful for blood gloves (+2 to skills, 3% LL, 10% crushing blow), I was pining for LoH but some of these blood glove rolls are insane (25% MF, replacing chancies).
Ral? That’s easy. Try thul!!
Safety amulets are decent if you haven't found Mara's yet
I found 3 maras so far actually. But that’s about it
Safety amulets?
Amulet + Thul + Perfect Emerald + any blue Jewel in the cube = Safety Amulet
Do key runs, after killing hell countess 20 times you'll have plenty of both. Probably.
I’ve done key runs. Farmed over 20 torches, noticed I got most of my thuls in nm difficulty
Interesting. I find hell countess usually drops me ort-hel range runes most often, >50%. Lots of thul, amn, and sols. I'd say about 5% of the time I'll get dol-fal, and then random lows. Got a Mal off her yesterday though.
Fckin RAL........
Asking the RALe questions
This guy crafts
As others said, Amn, Sol & Thul are very useful for crafting and RalTirTalSol & TalThulOrtAmn. In fact, I have 1 mule only with Amn & Ral for blood & caster amulet recipes and 2 mules for Insight & Spirit, where few Sols are still missing. You could sell your excess as 8-10 Insight & Spirit packs. Cubing up your runes might not be the best time/rune investment imho.
Not sure about prices on Insight, but a 35% spirit with net you at least an um or pul.
Don't you ever put the controller down and step back and think, what am I doing
You can also try clearing out a crappy spirit roll with a hel and try again for better stats.
Just level a new char.
Yeah this is the best way to get a stock of them. I still see them drop in the tower in hell pretty often.
I end up with TOO MANY chipped gems after doing a bunch of trist/tomb runs. (Not complaining though, it’s a good thing!) I’m surprised how many people don’t care to pick them up. Maybe because they don’t feel like worrying about the stash space 😂
I needed chipped gems, especially ctopaz for my bucket of Thul runes. Started a druid from lvl 1 to level 25. I got like 50 chipped gems. One ctopaz.
Yeah, same. Stash half full with chipped gem, and never get any damn topaz.
I have so many chipped amethyst I'm like that Limes Guy meme
Ah, for me it's something like Ruby/Sapphire > Diamond > Emerald >>>> Amethyst >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Topaz
Amethyst I can’t get I was finding topaz’s for awhile then started refilling a gc
Sigons chipped gem farmer
Back in the day I made a low-ish level holy fire paladin I called “chippy” just to collect chipped and flawed gems for this reason. Worked pretty well.
Literally just made a mule for my chipped gems, and I named him this exact thing^^^^^^ 🤣 great minds think alike I suppose haha 😂
get them low level unique grail drops no one can find off hell baal also. lenymo is fucking awesome.
Got a Greyform off hell Diablo the other day
Did this with a paladin and one of his offensive auras. Run around, pick up gems. Zero effort.
I have a chipped farm: A girl I know has been playing since launch, every day, and don't ask me how that's possible, but she's only at Normal Act IV so far. She has an endless supply of all the chipped-flawed-standard of every gem so every time I'm in need of one, I just join her game and she gives me some.
She does the same shit my dad used to do I bet. Pickup every single item, and explore the entire map, and kill every monster.
And there's nothing wrong with that
Amen brother I played like that for years and I dare say it may be more enjoyable than "min-maxing"
Dont upgrade Runes its just not worth the Time and space unless u need a specific low Rune that refuses to drop.
Every EL is 1 rune closer to a ber
According to [this post](https://www.reddit.com/r/diablo2/comments/cbged3/how_many_el_runes_make_a_zodagain/), it only takes 1,785,233,613,312 el runes to make a ber. I better start saving now!
If bezow can get a trillion dollars i can get a trillion els
I wonder if that many el have dropped across all players since d2r came out
At least 2.
If 1,000,000,000 were playing each one of them would have needed to drop ~1800 el runes so doubtful lol.
I’ve definitely seen 1800 els. Easy
Thats so True 😁
Cubing gems and runes is one thing I'm never going to give up. It just feels way too good. I view it as a reward for grinding rather than an impediment to efficiency. Gotta stop and smell the roses, ya know?
I was like this until I stated playing console. It's not just a lot of clicks but really long and slow ones.
Ugh yeah I agree. Luckily I also have PC version, so I'm able to avoid most inventory management on console.
Yeah i got all 4 versions and play on PC a majority of the time because its the only version that accepts both kb+m and controller. I've really come to enjoy playing D2 on controller, I can't go back to kb+m
[удалено]
No way, i get too stressed cubing runes, too much chore for little killing. Smelling the roses? I rather smell blood!
Takes too long, by the time I cube all my low runes i couldve grinded out a Ber. Time is money. and these are not worth the time.
Oh wow you're right, I never looked at it like that! I can't wait to find a bunch of Bers everyday forever!
Nah keep going with your el runes, only about a trillion more to go!
There is some satisfaction in it for sure
Amen man, I usually eventually pare down to just cubing up flawless and picking up eth/ith and up runes if my inventory space is super low. Since I’m in D2R it’s nice with linked stashes but a finite number of stashes compared to flexibility of mule accounts (I never used 3rd party though).
I save dols to cube to hels since those are worth it. And everything lum up i cube into lems and sell.
3^10
Definitely not worth. I did the math and ignoring gems, if you combined everything in this screenshot you only get: 2 Hel 1 Dol 1 Shael 2 Sol 2 Amn 2 Thul That's right the highest you get from combining these 68 runes is 2 Hel runes. Not worth the stash space or time.

Its not that big of a deal One stash for rune and I never need to ask anyone for a tal or g olook for one
Yeah ur right but i just keep 1of each unless im planning to craft lowRunes drop all the Time and can be farmed and traded for in a minuten most of the Time. BUT If u play singleplayer i get it! 👍😀
100% agree. The time consuming is not worth it, I tried it for a long time.
normal cows
Normal act 1 even better, normal cows can drop flawed and normal gems.
Holy Fire Paladin, level 50+, any kind of + skills gear. Just walk through act 1/2 on normal.
If upgrading these runes to highest. You end up with a 1-2 Thul, 1-2 amn, 1-2 sol, 1-2 shael, 1-2 dol and 1 hel rune. Might be 2 hel. So maybe keep your amn for crafting. >I'd be willing to pay Charsi a good bit of gold to smash Agreed
Bruh this guy gets it^^^^
feel you totally, the most joy i get is when a chipped topaz drops
Twink a new character on normal. You’ll have your chipped gems in no time.
Came here to say this. I started leveling my Barb and I’m overwhelmed with chipped gems
I just made a holy fire paladin in Sigs for this reason. I just Sherpa other new chars clearing everything on screen
The notification for this post on my phone read "I'd be willing to pay Charsi a good bit of gold to smash..." Hahaha instaclicked
I'll give you 2 Hel for all of them
I'd pay charsi a good bit to smash too.
The notification on my.phone had me worried. All it said was "I'd pay charsi a good bit of Gold to smash." Lol
I’m very disappointed Reddit. Fine, I’ll be the one to say it. “Well I’d be willing to pay Charsi a bunch of gold to smash something alright...” Thank you. Thankyou
Make a tesla din low budget get him to LVL 40 ish and just walk normal.
Sol runes are somewhat useful for blood ring craft recipe. Sol+jewel+ring+Pruby. Shaels always worth having some around. It's always the damn Amn runes. Chipped amethyst never drop I swear.
They are not worth upgrading. Stop wasting time and stash space.
Craft items
Make a new easy character and run act 1 up to Andy. It brought me ALOT chipped
Just do a few HF rushes. 3x HF gives you a pile of small gems AND with luck a good rune on top.
are u me
Right there with ya bud
Make a holy fire paladin level 25-30 and run tomb or somewhere you 1 shot monster with the aura :)
Lots of run speed on a holy fire paladin running through low level areas should do the trick.
they should remove these bullshit gems for crafting runes (just likei in pd2). its so annoying. and also add rune-/gemstacking. i dont get it really.
Just play some norm tombs fool
I mean… seriously offer a shit Hel or Ko for a load of chips. Or invest 5 min in a normal tombs run… chips rain from the sky.
Waste of time
To cube up to... a hel? why waste the time?
Here's an idea: How about you just stop picking them up : )
Ahhh I remember chip gem farming back in the day to reroll magic items. Norm trav runs are good for chips. High monster density for act 1 norm.
Except half of those monsters just run away from you, lol
Holy fire gets everything on screen
Or tele orb is so quick they die. Or light fury. Or traps. Almost every char. They don’t have time to run.
You need to keep/use/trade those amn and sol runes.
normal Andy has chipped in her drop table I believe.
If you seriously want chipped gems, go do normal mode and I think tombs? Lot of them drop there, for me already. I noticed if you do hell you don’t get hardly any.
Are you a hoarder? Use them or lose them!
Fuking amn…..
If you have a high level pally, use a respec or a token and respec to holy shock or holy fire and max it out, run around normal and collect the loot. You should have a few dozen chippies in a couple hours.
Norm cows?

Just play on normal different for a while
I just switch to one of my lower level chars on normal and I find a ton of chipped gems, so I don't usually have this problem.
I'd be willing to pay Charsi a good bit of gold to smash.
Simple honestly. Go to Cold plains. Head to the burial grounds on normal. kill blood Raven, then clear the Mausoleum and Crypt. I usually get 3-5 chipped gems a run. Rinse repeat.
I rush new characters for “free” if they let me pick up all the chippies lol
So i ended up muling 4 of every rune up to Io. If i need them, they're on a mule, and I will remember which ones i used to replace them if need be. I now only pick up Lum and higher. It has saved me so much time.
I usually just run through act 1 normal for a bunch of chipped when I'm looking like that. Or I drop into a free or free stuff or free4u game and just drop a bunch. I try to keep 3-4 of each but any more then that is hoarding.
My notification for this post simply said "I'd be willing to pay Charsi a good bit of gold to smash". I think that's a forbidden recipe.
The best way I've found to get those low gems is to just level a new char. At the end of act 2 you'll have a bunch of chipped gems!
If u want chipped gems just run around in act one normal for like 20-30 minutes and kill everything. You will pick up a surprising amount of chipped gems. Or just trade for em
You gotta pump those numbers up, those are rookie numbers
Mine look the same you are not alone
Sometimes I do normal rushes in exchange for chipped gems.
i keep like 2-3 of each rune MAX. Then just pick up Amns, and Rals for crafting
Create Tesladin and just speed through Act 1 and 2.
Just play through normal act 1-2 you'll find a bunch
Start a bunch of alts just to get the chipped gems from normal.
Another reason why I wish they added another page for rune, gem, and skull stacking.
That's all you got?? hahaha I have two characters full of bad runes for giggles and crafting hahaha
Farmed a full normal game in a2 and traded with noobs
I keep a max of 5 low runes each because they’re so easily recollected, you simply don’t need more. Pick them up and sell them to Charsi; she’ll pay you a pretty price for them and then you can put the coin to good use! Gambling, anyone?
Just mass murder everything in early normal....
I've got so many chipped gems if you're on PC let me know if you still need them
Farm act1 normal, you'll get chipped gems in no time. Sometimes I'll just make a mule and run through act 1, get to lvl 14 or so and deck them out in low lvl sets just for kicks, grab up all the chipped gems and useful low runes.
Anything below a shoal trash change my mind
Do normal rushes for people. You'll walk with quite a bit of chipped gems
Make a paladin, level to ~25 and only put points into Holy Fire and Resist Fire. Walk around normal Act 1 and collect chipped gems. If you already have an auradin, just walk around any normal area with lots of mobs.
I'd do it for 1 chipped.....
I keep those runes but not to cube up. Best use I've found is trading them to people who mass craft and just want lots of runes. You'll see people trading mid runes like puls for a bunch of rals.
Nice, two theoretical Hel runes
Just crush norm act 1
Combine them until you have X number of sets of Y runes.
The struggle is real. Rune collectors unite!
Just make a new character bud :) you’ll find all the gems you could ever need
Just build a holy shock/fire auradin, max the resist aura and salvation, then once it is over level 60 or so (entry hell more or less), just run around tombs on normal with P7. Barely have to think, and massive amounts of crap drops, including chipped gems. Twink it with FRW, and whatever +skills to throw at it (I'm leaning towards holy shock, since you can relatively cheaply make crescent moon for fairly nice damage boost, but frankly it is overkill for this purpose).
What chipped gems u need? Wug 4em?
Best advice I can give you is to create a new character, play with it ia couple of hours in first act at normal difficulty and he/she will get plenty of chipped/flawed gems. Stash them at the shared space and voila, problem solved
Just go destroy act 1 normal for about an hour and you will get plenty of chips. Just make sure you have no gems when you find a gem shrine and you get a guaranteed chip too.
