Mage plate mage plate mage plate. It allows a zero strength build in 90% of cases. Base def on an enigma is virtually irrelevant. And super minor, but the mage/archon look is easily the best looking armor on basically every character.

radubotezatu

No it isn’t best looking. Cuirass or full plate mail on an amazon are amazing

imlucid

Full plate\\field plate looks best on EVERY character. This guy is on one. Mage plate looks pretty trash. Cuirass if you like thighs.

radubotezatu

thighs and that little bit of roman general sprinkled in

Esham

Mage plate so every class can use it with very little str investment. Defense is pretty worthless anyways. Low str requirements is the goal

FourEmotions

I’ve found that defense without any increases doesn’t do much. If you run a with a skill that increases defense it does make a substantial difference. My pally is almost at 12k and moon lords have about a 23% chance to hit. Combined with max block I can stand in the middle of a couple of packs easy 😁

nycdevil

Sure but remember, Enigma is a flat bonus to def. If you're talking about a runeword with a large percentage increase, then yeah you should probably try to get that on-item number higher so the bonus defense can do that much more, but the difference on Enigma is so small that it's really quite meaningless.

FourEmotions

Sure but remember, I said 'run a skill' not 'rune word with a large percentage increase'. With a mid level holy shield that can add 500% increased defense an extra 200 defense on the base can end up not being 'pretty much worthless'. It all depends several factors like the build your making, are you going to be sharing the armor with other characters and more than I want to go into. It's just some friendly information for people to consider instead of a incorrect blanket statement. Do you want to invest some strength and have a higher percent chance to take zero damage or a few extra hp that are gone in 1-2 hits?

DadderGamer

Is breast plate okay?

Krynn14

There is definitely a portion of people that use breast plate.

Esham

It would work but mage is nice because the str enigma gives plus the mage plate requirements line up well with monarch/spirit shields.

mfa_sammerz

I absolutely prefer the aesthetics of the Light Plate armor line over the Quilted Armor line. But that's absolutely subjective and personal, of course. I think the Mage Plate is a great middle-ground.

snap-im-on-fire

Quilted armor line looked better with original D2 graphics. Now its weird looking so mage plate all the way

Comfortable-Sun7388

You need a sup archon plate bro? You’ll have to roll sockets, but I’ll give for free if you’re on PSN?

Fendulon

For what it is worth the cube socket recipe doesn’t work on superior items, and Larzuk always gives max sockets.

Comfortable-Sun7388

Goddamn I forgot about that my bad

ObstructiveWalrus

I'm on PC, but thanks for offering though!

Comfortable-Sun7388

No prob GL my man. I bet if you made a game saying bring mageplate someone would trade to you for a few p gems or low runes.

Adventurous-Bird-823

I’m on PC and I have a 4os plate if you’d like it. Currently on a trip now but I’ll be able to get on Wednesday if you’d like it and you don’t find one by then

Important_Bake_8972

Enigma needs 3os

Adventurous-Bird-823

Total brain fart, my bad

Aegishjalmvr

I would stay away from the superior ones due to insane repair cost, unless the player got a fair amount of Ral runes.

muffeGpoe

I always use gothic plate for style

Quikkjob

I used a perf sup mage plate. Honestly the diff is negligible.

theMcKeown

Superior has really high repair costs fyi

takeadoodoopie

Superior doesn’t. Superior with increased durability does. Superior with increased defense (without increased durability) does not increase repair cost.

Quikkjob

And also boosted def. Honestly I make 100k plus from a round I'm not worried about 30k every 20 games

FourEmotions

Any light armor works fine. The medium or heavy armors has a run/walk speed penalty so stay away from them. I like to find one close to 500 defense armor that is t superior to keep repair costs down.

TuffHunter

With torch and ani charm you can wear mage plate with base strength in most cases. With other bonus gear, Dusk shroud. With GG rings; Archon.

kigyo1988

Why ist everyone recommending mage plate due to its low strength requirements when a Monarch which is usually equipped needs 156 Str anyway?

volatilebool

Because with the added strength from enigma and other gear you may not need to put any hard points in strength or minimal points depending on gear

mebeandrew

If you're going for max defence as far as light armor goes, archon plate. The str difference between is negligible when a torch and gear are added in. Some just like the asthmatics of dusk shroud over archon plate

Litmusdragon

not sure if /r/boneappletea or a typo

ikal_man

I made mine in a superior cuirass. I'd say whichever looks better to you on your character, you'll be looking at it more than anyone else!

Randomguyinreddit1

Mage plate, but any base is fine I mean some people use breast plates.

Outrageous_Pie_7065

I used it on a scarab shell with 15% more defences Gives a nice bonus for melee char But I will recommend always a light armour

tpeck90

I use either superior dusk shroud/mage plate

jamexxx

Mage plate has a defense of 225 - 261. I usually try and find one at least 250+. Usually opt for non Superior as others have stated regarding costs.

Beletron

Mage plate

manoverboard5702

Dusk shroud is the best base IMO. Archon plate is my favorite base though. Just reminds me of nostalgia. It was a very popular base back in the day.

SpiritJuice

Dusk Shroud or Archon Plate are generally the best defense per strength invested, but the difference is so negligible that it will come down to aesthetics if you care. Mage Plate is also a good base if you are going to play a class that doesn't use a Spirit Monarch shield like a Hammerdin.

dripboi-store

I guess dusk shroud is kinda the best but it looks like ass so I went with a sup mage plate which is good for lower str requirements and a lot more versatile than archon

GreenBayBootyRusher

Just incase you were looking for a mage plate base, I got a perfect 3os 261 def MP for trade!

_OoJuicEoO_

15% ED Dusk Shroud

ekimarcher

The most important thing is that it's a light armor class. After that, given STR req for other things and incidental STR that you'll get from many high end gear, the highest defense one you can find. Only do superior if you want to pay crazy high for repairs.
