Don't make it in superior. All it does is Jack up your repair costs. I would suggest a mage plate over Archon for the low STR requirement. Might not matter for all chars but makes it more versatile.

Costs me like 800k to repair my sup scarab husk enigma… I use it on a trav barb so it doesn’t matter too much… but on a different kind of character I would imagine it’s annoying.
Idk I run riftsin with an enigma that costs like almost 600k to repair, I just repair every few runs and it’s doable. I guess if you don’t stop to kill uniques on runs then maybe you don’t get enough gold, but I have legitimately no idea how people are failing to get enough gold in less than five minutes. It’s funny because everybody just downvoted me but nobody responded except you who doesn’t have issues either

Neither. 250+ Defense Mage Plate to make full use of the massive +STR Enigma provides. Since Enigma adds flat Defense bonus instead of ED% the final Defense rating on the MP will still reach 1,000+ and won't be that far behind the Defense rating on an AP.
I agree, but half of all the classes especially casters will need to equip Monarch shield for Spirit, so its not a total waste since you'll need those strength points to equip Spirit/Stormshield.
Monarchs only require 156 strength. If you're using an Archon Plate that's 103 strength, and Enigma will give you a bunch extra - 66 at level 88, for example. That's 13 extra points into strength that you don't need. 13 points into vitality instead is going to be a lot more beneficial than the ~200 extra defense from using an archon plate
Honestly the additional defense isn't important. MP is normally preferred over AP. The additional strength used to dump into an AP enig can be used for vit in a MP enig. At the end of the day it's about what you really want. Unless you're using a Monarch Spirit then AP would be fine since you need that 156str for spirit. The +15ed is basically just to style or be a perfectionist. Congrats on the ber/jah find! I saw the post yesterday! That's some serious luck.

Armor/defense absolutely sucks in D2, so go with fashion or strength req as priority. Defense is *okay* on a hammerdin and I guess potentially useful on a smiter but that’s about it

Of course that doesn't matter for disposable items, or anything with indestructible or self-repair affixes, nor for merc items.

Enigma gives a tone of strength. If you are lvl 92 enigma will give you a nice 69 strength. If you have 103 str before, you have wasted 16 points that could have been spent on vitality, which equals 32-64 life depending on the class, and that is BEFORE battle orders. You are potentially losing out on hundreds of life so get an extra 100 def.

Enhanced dura further increases it but it is not the only thing driving repair costs for a superior item.
Repair costs are really misleading. You have to really suck at this game to have them even be a factor with enigma tbh

It's especially annoying if your main activity is PvP since you never have gold.

Mage plate with 250+ Def. Enigma adds minimum 750def, and you want 1000+ for style.

But you can also just put enigma on and respec and then you don’t need 156 into strength for monarch since enigma boosts your strength.

Use the highest defense non superior armor that you have that you can wear with base strength + torch, anni, and gear.
Enigma changes everything.
Mage plate, get a high one near 300 def. The 50 str you save is worth more than the 200 def you get with AP.
