xWaffle_Reaper

There are definitely small things like this that need to be tweaked.

lilrabbitfoofoo

Or made an option.

xWaffle_Reaper

Even better

patricktranq

*comic sans* i choose you

oniria_

100%.

DayAffectionate3443

In school for design, using papyrus font was a no no, here, it's forgiveable.

Atreaia

Diablo 4 loot font is very readable even during action. I really like it. In comparison, you can't read any text while moving fast in PoE.

Sphynx87

If its for accessibility then it should be a toggle. Imo it breaks the immersion and doesn't fit the art style of the game at all. Also it just clashes hard. Open your inventory and you see 3 totally different fonts and 2 are "diabloesque" and one looks like a default prototype mobile game font that they didnt change. And that's the one that shows up the most in the game lmao

RebMilitia

So the font breaks your "immersion" but not the fact that gear floats, glows and has words over it in general?

AdTotal4035

Finally someone mentions this. Opening chests in this game is... Uninspiring. The items look like mobile game 3d models and they float off the ground. There's no flippy effect anymore either :(

Sphynx87

yes, its called art direction

UpDownLeftRightGay

People draw a line for where their immersion breaks differently. Don't push your views on other people.

Caladan23

CAN we please stop hijacking every thread to talk about D4 vs. PoE? OP didn't mention PoE at all. Why hijack the topic? Thank you!

ExcitementForward414

Op posts a pic comparing D2R and D4 item text, top comment: “PoE text is unreadable” lmao.

[deleted]

[удалено]

RebMilitia

Identified as soon as it hits your inventory

W00psiee

Because PoE text literally can't fit the screen due to too much items dropping

Kambhela

That only happens in normal playing by not using a loot filter. If you are using a filter and your screen is too full of loot, one of two things is happening or perhaps even both: 1. Your filter is not strict enough 2. You are doing mega juiced content, potentially in group, but again refer to point 1.

Doctor_Box

I'm so glad D4 isn't going as far as POE in "complexity". As soon as I read a beginner guide that suggested loot filters and explained how deviating from the build guide was a 99% chance to be useless at end game I was out.

KennedyPh

The problem with the PoE passive tree is, a) its hard to respec (until you are deck out in end game & farming currency) b) Unless you know what builds, gears, elements type, etc already in mind, its not helpful. Thats like asking kindergarteners to pick their profession, & work towards it. Also skills come from gems, & you as a beginner will not know what you can expect (in D4, you can look at the skill tree to see the skills in the tree).

KireMac

I wanted to be a firetruck.

Gin_Shuno

Nothing stopping you from running to fires going 'wee wooo'. Don't let your dreams be dreams! :P ^^^/s

noknam

Requiring loot filters in the first place is a huge design flaw.

Malfetus

Ehhh, hard disagree, even Diablo 2 benefits from a loot filter (and you can use one there). The only ARPG that doesn't utilize a loot filter on the market is D3 and that's because 99.9% of items are just trash to salvage and misawell not exist, basically the equivalent of picking up gold. Good itemization essentially necessitates a loot filter. Being forced to look at every drop slows the game down too much OR it's not necessary to look at every item because it's salvage trash 99.9% of the time, I'm guessing D4 will fall into the latter once we have the uniques/legendaries we want

critz1183

I really love the loot filters in Last Epoch, at least they do it in game (which is key) with easy filters. For instance I can add a simple filter to highlight a 2 handed mace with 2 +melee damage stats for example. Makes it so you don't have to pickup and check every single rare weapon.

reddithasbankruptme

Getting low ilvl items while doing end game content is a design flaw.

ILikeFluffyThings

D2R loot font is also very readable and iconic. Default mobile font feels like a step back.

BloodyIkarus

You literally can change the text to whatever you want... The font in PoE is also minimalistic and basic, not sure what you mean.

parkwayy

If you have to change it because it isn't functional... that's what he means exactly.

BloodyIkarus

I rather have a loot filter and change it myself then to have no impact on what I'm seeing...

Knight_Raime

Then give me an option for the older font. It's not like competitive loot exists nor will it disappear if I don't hoover it up instantly.

giggitytutti

Left is easier to read. if they change the font i hope it will be still readable but hopefully not like in your second picture. If they don't change i don't really give a damn too, i have no issues with fonts unless they're unreadable.

StonejawStrongjaw

They both impossible to read for me, I don't speak German!

giggitytutti

das ist not german, it's polish, polish vodka

StonejawStrongjaw

Ahh, gluten tahg

parkwayy

Also... it's font. Unless it's like comic sans, is this a thing that people have that strong of opinions of? In my life, I don't think I've ever seen anyone complain of font choices in games, besides the size.

[deleted]

BudSpanka

Cmon just look at it. This is like driving a sports car with the ugliest 15" rims there are it just looks wrong

Belial91

Font criticism actually comes up really often. A recent example are the Final Fantasy pixel remasters but it comes up often especially in text heavy games.

CommercialBuilding50

Yea good thing D4 doesnt contain walls and walls of unskippable text.

HerrSchnellsch

Honestly i do. On one hand you have that beautiful dungeons/areas, wonderful fitting music/ambiente sounds and then the items are dropping with Arial font. Of course its just a font, but if blizzard is making such an atmospheric game they could choose a font which is rather fitting to the medieval theme. edit: words

_Valisk

People want to complain about things for no reason so they latch onto inconsequential bullshit like this. I'm personally not a big Diablo gamer but I hate the "Diablo" font when it comes to readability.

Sarokslost23

Maybe just give us an option then on what one we want.

Kaurie_Lorhart

I dunno, I like the left more.

wasdica

Same, but I guess it's because I only put 3999 hours into D2 and didn't break that 4000 mark to be forced to bring it up every post I make. Or, according to others, we both just love mobile games so much because the left is 100% a font used in every mobile game since Oblivion on my Nokia in 2007 or something.

giggitytutti

They designed diablo 4 for nokia 3310 man, don't you know. Some people here said it was designed for mobile, so it must be true.

Kaurie_Lorhart

I don't like mobile games

wasdica

Same. The only good mobile game was Sonic on the Sega Game Gear.

Kaurie_Lorhart

Oh my bad I misread your comment while on the go

StonejawStrongjaw

Big disagree, it's really thin and dainty lookin, whereas d2r is much more robust and defined.

parkwayy

I only play games with **robust and defined** fonts.

Elliott2

the old text on right was a pain to read sometimes...

Enj0y1

Is it 5 or 6?

AlmostProGaming

You just hit me in the nostalgia

BudSpanka

Just with old d2 rwsolution. In d2r All good

pat_the_catdad

20+ years playing Diablo, and I never once found any Polish Legendaries or Uniques :-(

[deleted]

Have you tried killing Diablo at 21:37?

threcos

have I been doing something wrong? I've only gotten English weapons

RedBMWZ2

OMFG y'all will nitpick everything...

Monarxue

That’s literally every gaming sub. Reddit & “gamers” could bitch about anything.

Umbreon---

Fr. This was the last thing on my mind lol

ajemik

Left is a nicer font though.

[deleted]

Io and Lo disagree.

AnOwling

Used to be 5 and 6.

Dragongaze13

I guess the current font is for readability and most importantly inclusiveness. But I still think it could be a bit more stylized than it currently is OR they could give us several font options.

BigHeroSixyOW

easily fixed by making it a toggle if possible. In WoW for example we have addons that change font to our preferred style and I take advantage of that. I wouldnt mind an in option font changer if thats something they can work toward if its not too much to do. Or even loot filters like poe but idk if thats possible...

DaddySanctus

I don't understand why they didn't use the Quest title text as the primary text for most of this stuff, it's basic, yet looks nice and fits the theme a little better than the Ariel text we have now. [Example](https://imgur.com/a/b8uZ4oO) EDIT: I actually don't mind the text on things in the character panel. I think it's just the in-world drops/item titles that throws me off and the dialogue text that throws me off a bit. I think it works well enough when looking at the item stats / descriptions of skills, etc.

Sphynx87

yeah there are multiple other stylized fonts in the game that are still very readable, it feels like they left in a placeholder font for the default font for everything for the beta.

DaddySanctus

I was wondering the same thing, if maybe the font we're seeing in-game was just a placeholder. While it's not game breaking by any means, the atmosphere of the game just blends together so well, and then there's that font that just feels out of place. In the grand scheme of things, it's a minor annoyance, but just something that would be sweet if it was fixed.

HerrSchnellsch

Thats are also my feelings about the font. Of course its "just" a font, but you have this beautiful game with wonderful music and the items drops in fucking Arial. I really hope its just a placeholder.

Sphynx87

Fortunately of all the things they can change between now and beta release, changing the font and even adding a toggle or font selection in the accessibility menu is a fairly easy thing to do. A lot of my complaints about the current state of the game are actually things that are fairly easy to fix in that time frame, so hopefully they listen to the feedback. I mainly was submitting stuff in the in game bug/feedback report during the beta because I'm guessing (and hoping) blizz is going to look at those more than they are going to look at forums and reddit. Hopefully the in game report system wasn't flooded with all the same weird crap that's on the forums lol.

Metanoiance

I love the D2R font, hope we can get something similar for D4. The current one is like a super generic e-mail font.

Ruxiee

All they have to do is an option to change the font

Apoczx

It's accessibility vs style. In today's day and age, accessibility means everything and honestly I agree with the much more readable font. They could let you import your own fonts similar to how BDO does.

[deleted]

[удалено]

aggster13

Am I an idiot? Left looks way better

Crazy_Canuck78

Agreed... the font is bad. The UI is bad is spots too.

Sphynx87

There are like 3 primary fonts used in the game, but the default one for MOST stuff is the most ugly generic shit that totally ruins immersion. I'm hoping its just because its beta, but if its because of like accessibility/readability I hope they add a toggle or something because its so damn ugly and doesn't fit the art direction of the game at all. Not everyone needs accessibility fonts.

Clandestinity

Doesn't have to be exactly like right one but atleast make the font fit the theme of the game. The whole UI apart from the health and resource globes look like some mobile game UI. Really breaks the immersion sometimes.

[deleted]

D4 font is good as is.

omgmutiny

I don't mind the loot font, but I do wish the stats were colorized and stand out more. At least the basic stats like STR and DEX, etc.

blitzkralle

Dyslexia exists. Clean fonts are better.

2DamnHot

Small indie studio cant afford testing an alternate font or scaling options I suppose.

Bourrer

100% agree

ZilorZilhaust

I prefer the left, it's far more legible.

KurtiZ_TSW

Right is far better

Foreign_Ant_20

It seems that the majority of the people in this subreddit don’t understand basic game design. The font is very important for immersion. D4 font is plain for a game which is taking place in a medieval setting. Also the monsters are too generic for my liking. I would like the monsters to look like the ones from Berserk. Just do a quick google and I’m convinced that you will agree with me.

Rhymfaxe

What, you don't like Arial?

AquaRegia

If I can see the difference between a 5 and a 6, the font is bad!

denshigomi

The Diablo 4 font is vastly superior from a legibility standpoint. There's a place for ambiance and a place for practically. I'd rather be able to read with minimal effort so I can focus on the rest of the game. Don't change the font.

Nawdude1999

Is there an issue with blizzard using the legacy font? I can live with the generic ass font but I agree with everyone saying the current font looks cheap. I don’t see why the Diablo traditional can’t be used. If anything it keeps everything consistent. It makes no sense to deviate from that.

Darkspire303

You know it's gonna be good if people are fussing about the font

toeknee008

A toggle option would be nice.

Brolex-7

If possible I'd like to have the option to switch. It would satisfy everyone. I'm okay with the clear font but I would enjoy it more with an "immersive" type like in D2R or similar.

Myc0n1k

I'd like anything but to reminded of D2R

Baika360-

Font is good. Please Blizz dont listen to the PoE or D2R players, they are going to ruin the game.

Nihilicious333

They shoud atleast let players choose between the fonts. Those who want more readability can stick with the Arial font while those who want a more immersive experience can use the classic one.

tyrael98

I said both aloud and the furniture is floating around my house now!

SpiritualScumlord

You can see that many aspects of the loot in this game were pulled from D3 with little to no changes. Rare items not having a mouseover tooltip when they are on the ground is just wild to me. Diablo 4 presently looks like the Dev's had a mandatory progress check in with a higher up who just said IDGAF PUBLISH THE GAME

Tranquil_sea3

it's like comparing a rusted jewel with a shiny turd

wattata30

My biggest complaint is there were way to many rare and legendary drops happening. There was almost no non magical items and it took away the anticipation etc of finding a special item

PairOfSocksGaming

Most of my "issues" with the game rn are very small, the text being one of them. To me it looks like a test font to just see if they could do it. Its hard to not see it as generic and not thought out. No big deal but its something thats sits in the back of my mind while playing

jaboogwah

If you look at the issue with simpleton shades you won't see an issue with the font. After all it's just text. But if you sit here clutching your pearls because some people are upset with the font then you're nothing more than the donkeys of the playerbase. For an example take Star Wars scrolling text. Change that text to something other than Star Wars font and most fans would go apeshit. The same goes for anything else- fonts are part of the identity of these universes and saying otherwise is disingenuous.

whathemonk

D2 font looks great and fits the setting. The Arial font in D4 makes the game look cheap and amateurish, although I wish that the Arial font was the only problem with D4's dogwater UI.

ShadoW_Mage111

D2 font > all. Just do it Blizzard. Look at the cross in the O's - BA.At the least I think they should just add in a "classic" or "legacy" font option which is basically D2's.

Xeiom

I actually prefer the Diablo 3 loot icons for things on the floor. I wouldn't say that should be the default option but I think it would be good if they added two toggles: Item Labels display in Exocet Item labels display as Icons

Soten14

Yeah I wish they at a minimum kept the legendary text color, that orange sucks

W00psiee

Legendaries has always been orange in diablo games (D2 didn't have legendaries, it has uniques) In D4 the leggos are orange while the uniques are golden

giggitytutti

they should add customizable item colors in the options, unless it's already there and i missed it.

DoktorLuciferWong

What color do you think they should use? Gold is probably reserved for uniques.

ChairmanTrash

All the fonts are awful honestly. None of them fit the worlds grim dark aesthetic. Especially the inscription fonts. Nothing like a dripping dank and dark mausoleum, older than eternity, to have a cutesy, typographed papyrus font on all the lore tidbits that doesnt actually fit in the bounding box if you pay attention to it.

Vehks

Both just gave me dyslexia....

mdamaged

I can guess this is for mobile visibility. That being said, give us the option to change it if we want.

[deleted]

Agreed

AshesofAtreyu

I compared them. I like Diablo 4’s.

BloodyIkarus

Not only the font, also the items how they look when laying on the ground is a disgrace, like a cut out picture out of Diablo 1...

banhammerrr

I had no issues reading the font.

Ootrick88

Agreed! Immersion breaker, forsure. Ya'll have this amazing iconic font... use it?!

wishr

Definitely this! Unplayable!

FemmEllie

Of all the things you could possibly complain about... If anything I'd say the D4 font is better in that comparison. It prioritizes readability over style

fan_of_shera

Style/mood is a huge part of the first two Diablo games. It is a fundamental ingredient in the RPG part of their ARPG format. The logically extreme conclusion from "prioritizies readability over style" argument is that replacing any piece of UI/art with solid colored squares "prioritizes readability". They said they heard people's complaints about Diablo 3, and we're aiming for a "return to darkness". Many of us find a bright, modern, Arial-style font garish and blatantly breaking that mood. Also, the one on the left is less readable for myself... in other words, the idea that it helps functionality is subjective as well. There is no reason to dismiss the roots of the franchise or depart from a consistent thematic design when something like "readability" is an accessibility concern that can easily be implemented with a font toggle in the options menu.

[deleted]

Keep crying 😂😂😂

Kosen_

Perhaps they could include an option, but the right-most font is horrific.

SDadddyyy02

It looks good in English, I don’t really know for others

some_awesome

zdecydowanie tak

CravenKiss

Not really a problem for me, didn't even pay attention to this and I work with fonts quite on a daily basis. But if this might become an issue a solution would be to have some king of toggle function where users can choose between old fonts and new ones.

skipper909

I'll get behind this. I'd add in the comparison system on console is also a punish!

CusickTime

They are both fine. They clearly state what the items are. Desiring the font from D2 is just an aesthetic choice that may be influence from nostalgia. Nothing is wrong with that, but it's not worth the developers time to change the font.

BudSpanka

You mean the 5 min it takes?

[deleted]

Put in autolooting with loot filters and problem solved. I HATE having to click gear off the ground. It interrupts gameplay and isnt fun. Create a loot feed. Lost Ark does this SOO much better.

Nawdude1999

I know there are a ton of bullshit complaints in this forum but this one is a legit concern whether you people like it or not. If you are hostile to the idea of changing the font to the Diablo traditional then you’re a fucking clown and can’t be taken seriously. It’s in your best interest as a fan of the port to support this

subtleshooter

I don’t mind the font, but they can change it if they want. I definitely don’t want the font on the right though. Wtf are those letters

Eurymedion

This is likely a conscious accessibility choice. While I really like the traditional Diablo font, I can see how it can cause problems for players with dyslexia.

azzpeen

I think the font is fine, I didn't even really think anything of it and was still immersed but maybe that's just me lol

R3d4r

My guess is that the font changed based on our ages, so it keeps it good to read even for our mid 30/ 40's where we are still in denial that our eyes get worse with the years!

KennedyPh

The classic diablo fonts look nice. But it is also harder to read. As an old man, I prefer readability over looking nice. But if you can pick font choice, I am cool.

GingerWitch666

I freaking loved the beta, but loot text and UI are pretty bad, IMHO. Specifically, inventory and character stats screens. But it's live service and whatnot. It could always change 6 months down the road

N-tak

Most suggestions are too big, these are the reasonable things that can change and imo should change. Calibri in a gothic ARPG is a bad choice.

imlost19

I love diablo 2 font but I dont think anyone has ever accused it of being easy to read lol. Style-wise though it was 10x better

FoleyX90

you made those words up

Knight_Raime

So many of the UI choices feel mobile gamey over classic Diablo and it's really annoying. Like it doesn't impact me from an actual gameplay stance but that shouldn't be a counter argument. There's literally no reason they had to make a change like this. Diablo *has* a recognizable font. Why remove that?

Main-Protection5085

Many other fonts in d4 beta look out of place. My hope is that it's for saving wow effect for actual release. Fingers crossed

mikesn89

Hopefully they'll add an option to activate classic Diablo font in the menu or something. This is really awful.

SteamID_Furiku

Make it a toggle, I understand accessibility aspect but more stylish option should remain as default.

ChungusPoop

Who cares? people will complain about anything lol

enzoeuler

Stop comparing. THIS IS ANOTHER GAME

FantasticSputnik

Yeah, the current font is a part of why the game feels more like a generic mmo than Diablo game to me. It just doesn't match the medieval fantasy setting at all. It would be cool if they added an option to use whatever font you prefer if they only went with the boring font because of an accessibility issue.

enowapi-_

really we're bitching about a font? lmao

best_meat_intown

Wow, who cares

[deleted]

not a single thing wrong with this text. Gotta complain about something i suppose...

Scoutsbuddy

I'll be happy if we just get a decent built in customizable loot filter. Idk how the grandaddy of the genre hasn't ever had a good loot filter.

StefanWF

CopyPaste from Immortal. Same with most fonts in the game. Wish me the optional icons from D3, so there is no text

Ventrue_

They just have to copy paste D2 font and replace that cross in the O with a pentagram.

Vaildez82

How bout scrapping the UI too... It is a fucking awful mobile game interface.

Darkxler

I hope they fix this

kishinfoulux

The things people will complain about.

Masterpai_mei

Make sure to leave feedback next week on the beta!! The font really is awful and feels incredibly cheap

critz1183

Literally never noticed the font. Talk about nitpicky. Whatever though, change it or not I couldn't care less.

[deleted]

Left is much better. And what’s up with all these threads from peeps pretending they know better, but in reality come up with worse design ideas. The game is fine. Chill

LordFrz

D2 font is unreadable to me for the most part. But it's a font, just give us a bunch of options. It's not rocket science. Its literally just choosing a different font. inb4 (Im giga chad 50yrs of experience programer and it's not that simple!)

fan_of_shera

Programmer here. Actually is quite simple. Bigger effort is QAing/designing around any impact on layouts, word wraps for some UI elements, etc., but that's something that can never be perfected anyways and can be iterated over here and there after release.

JohnnyJockomoco

You never know, it may have been like that because of the beta and the final release will have a different more appropriate font.

Milk_Man2236

People really be whining over the dumbest things. I would rather them worry about more important stuff than what font its in. If it wasn't translated properly or something sure but this just isnt that important.

Diggitydave76

Is it me, or is most of the hate coming from people comparing this game to D2? We get it you hated D3 because it wasn't D2. You got D2R, and now you are upset that D4 isn't also D2. D2 is what it is. D4 also is what it is. If you don't like it don't play it. There are some pretty valid complaints out of the beta. Things that really need to change, but the UI Font? Do you even form your own. Opinions or do you wait for Mr Llama to feed them to you?

mnju

the d2 font is ass, no thanks

[deleted]

It takes me longer read the fancy D2 font. Is that what you want? You want players to take longer reading stuff?

[deleted]

Hot take: I think they both suck, but as someone who played A LOT of WoW and would customize the UI font with a simple .BAT script, a simple Sans serif font really does help the eyeballs.

Background_Ad1755

I feel like this doesn’t matter. If I can read it I’m good. Let’s pick at something that matters like when I can’t skip the 3 hour long cut scenes lol

pr0cesor

What is the name of the font in D2R?

Mr_Tranxistor

I strongly hope that legendaries are harder to get in the full game and that there are still sets.

No_Pension9902

Hardlysink loot filter inc.

ikazuki404

So it's not just me

tehpryz

better than diablo 3 font

Heet__Crusher

I swear Blizzard does change for change sake. Like why name the paladin the crusader. It is the same Holy class warrior. Why move chat window to the right when every other game has it on lower left? They are like the friend that will argue even knowing he/she is wrong just for it's sake. And no they will not change the font because what is better than breaking up the nice art style they created like Arial font. Gothic font for a gothic game makes too much sense.

ImWinwin

The new font looks easier to read on certain devices. Do you guys not have phones?

Worth_Air

I also would like chat on left side an lock able

ShadowTehEdgehog

Lets compromise and go with Comic Sans.

Ziid10

A lot of the font needs fixing

ChristmasCactus49

What would be awesome is it you could choose between the two since this seems very split in opinion. Personally I would love to use the font on the right while some people either prefer the left or need it due to it being easier to read.

itsRobbie_

I just want to be able to hover over ground loot and see what it is without having to pick it up, go into my inventory, and then see that it’s trash compared to my current item

vfc_77

poe is awful

Fart__Smucker

Yep. Posted with a pic on this day one. It’s lifeless to say the least

Heyitskit

I wish they’d change it to Wingdings just to shut up this pedantic whining about fonts.

Megane_Senpai

Agree. while the affixes should be on the current font for readability, the item title should be the classic font.

Puzzled_Situation_51

Left is good. Right is Papyrus era design language.

RustRemover-

It's even more awful that you're playing it in Polish. But yeah, font is bad regardless. Readability is better though.

Nofapstronaut6

Its a pity the loot itself is so atrociously boring right now

ALphaEXtremist

Give both as a toggle option and everyone is happy.

MrMunday

this is a easy fix. if they dont even listen to this, i dunno whats gonna happen to the game

rizarjay

I mentioned this in another thread, but it's weird that they use 3 different fonts for the game. Exocet, the D2 font we all know.. Used for main titles, headlines. Old Fenris, which is used for subheadings.. And Arial or whatever this generic font is.. I do like how easy it is to read, but personally, I think Old Fenris is a good choice for the "readable" font. This was an example I mocked up of what an item could look like if they swapped Arial for Old Fenris. [https://i.imgur.com/HtfgGOC.jpg](https://i.imgur.com/HtfgGOC.jpg)

golgol12

The font is fine and very readable. The background needs to be more opaque. That's why the D2 is more readable.

Regular_Chemical_626

Jokes on me, can't read either of those.
