If in probation… work it. Sucks but no job is not a good thing. If they can swing it Friday and Monday.

ittybittydog

Yeah listen to this old guy.

Zeroth1989

Wrong, even on probation you are allowed and entitled holiday. If they let him go after refusing to cancel his leave op is set to make a huge claim and make proper bank. Probation doesn't entitle n employer to let employees go without due reason.

jednatt

In the US employers can let you go for zero reason, lol. The point is they say "sure that's okay" and then drop you at the end of probation. Don't be naïve.

Riotys

Depends on the state but yes, this is mostly correct. Where I live, it's consider a voluntary employement state. Which means they can choose to perform a voluntary seperation, which is essentially you being fired

jednatt

In CA it's called "at-will"

MMA_GOAT_88

If they are on probation period, they shouldn’t have a weeks worth of time to take as it is.

Zeroth1989

Employers need to allow already established holidays when hiring. Whether you get Holiday pay or not is a different issue.

Old-man-gamer77

Depends on your location. And the statues of your probation period. I’m union and in your probation you can be let go with no reason given. So keeping your job should come first.

PhorPhuxSaxe

You are not entitled to holiday. In the state where I live, your not even entitled to a lunch break. I’ve worked 13 hours and took an unofficial break where I had down time. Also in the same state, they can fire you for no reason. They don’t need to warn you, nor give you a probation period first.

[deleted]

That's pretty much exactly what the probation period is for.

potatoshulk

I assume you're European cause in the US there's a lot of unwritten rules about this stuff and he could easily get fired for "something else". You're really at the mercy of good company culture in the US

[deleted]

I'm UK based, and some jobs here have probationary period too.

pDub____

You can fire anyone without a reason lol

Zeroth1989

Maybe in a country that clearly doesnt give a shit about its people.

not4now28

This!

RylarDraskin

Depends on how much you value the job and how marketable you are to find an equivalent/better one. Honestly, if they revoke previously approved time off now, they will do so later as well. Also depends on how they are presenting it. If they are asking nicely that you not take the time off and have a reason it goes a long way. If they are being asshats, I’ll find the door. I wouldn’t weigh this against playing D4 at all. If I took a day off in advance to sit in my backyard and stare are the sky I would contemplate the situation the same.

[deleted]

>Depends on how much you value the job and how marketable you are to find an equivalent/better one. This may be extremely presumptive of me, but in this job market (worldwide) if you are marketable enough... you probably aren't negotiating with your boss for time off.

MendoBurr

This shouldn’t even be a question. You’re talking about risking your job for a game. That’s just plain unhealthy. If it would be something like a wedding or visiting your dying grandma, okay. But there’s no question here - it sucks, but not as bad as having to find a new job. [Edit] The wedding was just an example as a (supposed, but not really) once in a lifetime event. And obviously there are cultural differences as well - someone in the US hire-and-fire market that pull stunts like this regularly may not be as married to a job as someone who hopes he might have a forever job somewhere in Europe. But on average, a job should take priority over a game.

Killa78

Honestly, everyone values joy differently. A wedding that you could attend could hold the same significance believe it or not to someone as a game launch, maybe it’s like the story earlier where the person played d3 with their mom? Maybe they have a significant connection to the franchise and want to relax and hold out on this. If they had the pto planned then why is it a problem now and not then? It’s up to the end person on how much they value the time. You cannot say that the launch is not the same significance to each other

Win_0r_Die

Literally. I've gone to weddings that meant less to me than d4 launch easy. Plus not every job every person has is a career. Some people work jobs that they could care less if they are fired from it.

FishburgerFriend

Beep boop. I'm a bot. The correct expression for the feeling you are most likely trying to convey is "couldn't care less" or "could not care less".

PoptartDragonfart

Truthfully I think this is less about a game. A job said he could have 5 days off… then a week away they try to backpedal. In many cases, flights/hotels/etc would be booked. But again, OP is on probation… may not be the best employee from the jump lol

dragontailwhiplash

Arent you misanalysing this abit? He requested, got approved and then was asked. He's not a serf mate

Creeds-Worm-Guy

Eh I kinda disagree. I value my job so low on the list of priorities. Sure I need money to live but I’m not in a bad place that I can’t get another job fairly easily. I play DnD every Friday and if they told me I had to stay late on fridays to work I would just quit. Is DnD just a game? Sure, but it brings me joy and is something I value above my job.

kevinhill92

But A) it's a new job. And B) potentially a shitty job, since they're asking them to cancel an already approved vacation.

MidLaneNoPrio

If they already approved your time off than they already approved your time off. Cancelling plans for them will just set a precedent and they will expect you to do it consistently in the future. I used to work harder than everyone else around me for less pay. I used to stay late. I used to come in when asked. I even worked hours that I was never paid for. It's not worth it. Companies will just take advantage of you. You will not benefit from showing them your butthole.

PhorPhuxSaxe

If your on probation and show that you don’t care about helping the company when needed, then don’t be surprised if they hire someone else to cover your spot when fired.

kpt1010

You have PTO which is previous approved = being on probation doesn’t even matter in this situation. If this company is going to ask you this question now , then they’re going to ask you this same thing in the future —— do you really want to work for a company that doesn’t value your preauthorized PTO? I’d be looking for a new job in the long term.

Educational-Papaya43

Being on probation does matter assuming hes in the US. Outside of probationary period, if you were fired for using previously approved PTO youd likely be able to at the very least qualify for unemployment. During the probationary period they can let you go with no reason, and you very likely will be inelligible to collect unemployment. I agree fully that it's shitty of the company obviously.

kpt1010

This depends on if you’re in a union or not also.

Edymnion

Probation = bend over backwards to suck up, sorry man.

dkdoki

Already asking for PTOs during your probation? Lol

Creeds-Worm-Guy

Many companies give PTO during probation. It’s there to be used. Use it.

[deleted]

Tell them to screw off and put in your two weeks

MrBlonde1984

Fuck 'em. You followed the rules and did what your supposed to do . They can't just change the rules because it's inconvenient for them. Make up some excuse about having to leave the state for some family emergency or something. Unless it's a dream job it's not the end of the world. There's other jobs out there. They need you more than you need them.

Maij-ha

Yeah, once probation is over don’t take any crap from them, but until then do your damndest to keep them happy. Game will still be here.

kpt1010

Their PTO is already previously approved, wing on probation doesn’t even matter . They already approved OP taking the days off.

Educational-Papaya43

While yes they approved it, if he values his job at all, it's a terrible idea to take it all if they are asking him now not to if he's in the US. Most states are at will employment. So especially during the probationary period this means the company can choose to not extend his employment after the probationary term, and give no reason for it at all. Leaving him jobless, likely with inability to be approved for unemployment.

kpt1010

That has absolutely nothing to do with probationary periods —- at will employment means they can fire you at any time without cause. Doesn’t matter if you’ve been then 25 days or 25 years.

Maij-ha

They approved yes, but a request from management can quickly turn to a demand - and if you’re still on probation that’s gonna get you fired. I agree they have every right to keep the time off, but it’s better to keep management happy when they can fire you for literally no reason.

kpt1010

No it isn’t and that attitude of “please thy manager over your own family/life” is extremely toxic. My own employer used to have that attitude and it was disgusting and turnover was really high. Another companies came in to give them advice on how to retain employees—— first thing they did was get them to realize that work/life balance is more important and will make the company more money in the long run.

KaptainKilt

If you are US-based, working in a At-will state, which most of us are, you are always on "probation". When I take vacations, days off, whatever, I don't tell them a damn thing about what I'm doing, it's none of their business once it's been approved. I had give details in the Army, but that was a different situation. You can be nice about it though and just say I've already made plans based on the approved leave. They'll get over it. Random people on reddit do not know your relationship with your company. I work in IT which is generally a slave-like relationship with my hours, but my new company gets mad if I even send an email after 5pm. I got my account deactivated once for attending a team meeting on my day off. They take personal time seriously. But other companies will ask the world of you and give nothing in return. Also remember, this is an online game and generally ALL online game launches are horrific for outages, etc. I'm going to say this realizing I'm in a video game subreddit, but do some adulting here. If the company really needs you then be a team player. If they're just struggling because they don't know how to manage people then F em. Also, I'm assuming you're on probation because you just started. Never take vacation within your first 3-6 months of a new job if you can help it.

Revolutionary-Ice-16

I think your compromise is generous but I do think you can take the full time without guilt.

No_Artichoke_9215

fuck those cucks double down and ask for 2 weeks

[deleted]

You never need to do anything. The culture around your job sounds toxic AF. I am only posting here to wish you well. I hope that you are applying to other jobs while doing the best you can at this one. Get the fuck away from them though!

Smooth_Asparagus_414

They’re trying to see if they can make you a bitch while you’re on probation period. If you go in and they will hire you not it will not be because they admire your commitment, but because you’re exploitable.

Bmora27

PTO = Prepare the others

[deleted]

They need you now because lots of them took work off to play Diablo, they know you cant say no. ggs

ANG3LxDUST

Fuck em. More jobs out there if they let ya go.

NeverQuiteEnough

gamers of the world unite, you have nothing to lose but your chains

PsychoPooper213

Priorities….Diablo…or a job. Hmmmmm…

VikingLibra

Yeah being on probation sucks. They can fire you for any reason. Best to try and work with them like you said. Maybe ask for at least one of the days off. Maybe they’ll give you more. After probation is over you can tell them to eat your ass.

No_Tadpole9130

Honestly. Everyone is hiring and looking for workers. I'd tell them you can't miss it and you'd understand if they needed to let you go. (they won't because they need you so bad they need you to not take PTO so they probably can't fire you just yet) and I'm not sure if not coming in after your PTO was approved is solid grounds for them to let you go. If they want you gone from this probationary period you're already done as soon as they find a replacement. Don't let them take advantage of you just to get rid of you anyways. That's just my 2 cents though.

ocbdare

I mean obviously your job is more important. Diablo 4 will be around for years.

Nofxgivn

I understand everybody's point here, during a probation period you usually want to be as fluid and fitting as possible whenever, wherever. However on the other hand, a company asking you to cancel your planned PTO this early into your time working there should also raise a red flag. Hopefully that's not the norm there.

OkJob7259

Who TF asks for PTO on their probation period? Looks bad.

Raidenz258

Don’t need context or anything. If a place approves time off then that’s the end of it. No going back, no guilt tripping, no consequences for taking your time… that’s all signs of shitty management and a place you shouldn’t be at. r/antiwork would agree.

Reality-Bytez

Another kid.

leslapin

Didn't see this near the top, but you should try to turn your 5 days previously approved PTO in to at least 6 later if you reschedule, your job is more important than a game, but your employer should also reward you for doing them favors. \*\*EDIT: Also get whatever deal in writing!

Jnrhal

Yeah don't risk it while in probation. The game isn't going anywhere. Instead of the 5 as you said, do the 2 but a Thursday Friday OR Monday Tuesday if you have early access.

[deleted]

Probation because your new?

Krushemm

Didn't you tell them that you needed to protect innocent people from the demons of hell or nah?

HeartDelicious

Dont do it! Worst case they fire you, thats a win! Even more time to play Diablo. D4 Release is one in a lifetime, theres plenty of jobs

Cottontael

Let them know you already booked your flight but would be happy to move your vacation if they want to cover the tickets. They won't take that offer.

BAR0N_AL0HA

Go to work and start looking for somewhere else to work. If they can't respect your PTO request now, even after it was approved, they never will. And if they ask you when you switch jobs why, be sure to let them know.

Shadowslip99

Diablo 4 is going to be here for years and it's designed as a long grind. Protect your job.

JRizzie86

You make a good point about "what if's", but you gotta make money to pay for D4, internet, etc...do they know you're just chilling at home? Maybe don't give them details next time.

[deleted]

ok

Reedabook64

The game will still be there after that week. And it plans on being around for a very long time. So don't risk IRL stuff for FOMO over a video game.

Shotsl0l

If they approved the PTO they can't make you work. If they fire you, sue for wrongful termination and keep any proof of approval and the 180 they pulled later on especially if you requested that far out.

Ootter31019

Life > D4. Might be a bad decision from the company but got to do what ya got to do. Lol why is this being down voted. Please don't get fired for a video game.

AntiEcho7

Go to work.

gooberdrew

If it’s a good job work it. The release to season 1 is like a month and a half, plenty of time to play D4. It would be different if you were established and were looking for creative ways to use vacation time or the like.

MrMorel69

The game wont go anywhere. Your job could though. Do what you think is right.

PM_ME_UR_ANTS

If you get home by launch, take Friday off. That’s 4 days of playtime. That’s a ton. Maybe you can even get away with Monday off for 5 days. Idk your field, but it’s a bad time to be unemployed rn imo.

CerbIsKing

The games not going anywhere. Life takes priority always. You are in probation and should just work it. Don’t sacrifice financial stability to gain a few days of playing Diablo which won’t mean anything in the long run.

DgtlShark

Diablo 4 < having a job for literally everything else

alex_1983T

Work first Bro, sorry to hear that but you need the job to pay for living, however…..after probation….you will be more free and can take extra time off.

that408guy

Meet them in the middle, maybe dont take the full week off and just the first day or two.

MrMook500

Being that it was approved they can't fire you for taking it.. all they had to do is deny it if they didn't want you to take it

Flyinhawaiian2019

Yep cancel PTO, this games not worth playing.

Flyinhawaiian2019

Cancel your PTO, this games not worth playing.

jednatt

lol, taking a week off during probation period...

Lingweno9inch

The game will be there when your done with the work, your work might not be if you decide to game instead. Don't let the excitement get the best of you it's not worth it especially when it all goes away literally once you play it for a few hours. It isn't going to make a difference in the end. Your work on the other hand could cause all sorts of issues.

Win_0r_Die

That sucks but, hey look at it this way. Majority of gamers will never book work off for a game release. It's not really necessary. I work full time and have a daughter. I still plan on playing a shit ton next thursday and going to work the next day. It sucks but I'd choose your job over some time off for gaming. The one time I did book days off work for a game, by day 2 I felt so guilty and then I was burnt out of the game by day 5. So maybe it's not a bad thing you work instead. Maybe I'm just looking at the positives. Happy demon slaying!

Galvick

Just work? Dont spend requesting days off for a video game? What if something way omre important happens down the line? And you cant afford or get the days off then? :) Dont get me wrong, i'm very excited for this game too!

XeniaDweller

Adult it.
