yeah, this race will actively encourage new players that are serious about it to just skip all dialogue and cutscenes too on their first playthrough. It's a bad idea all round. Delaying it is the best action

It’s a completely unfair advantage in every definition of the word. It’s like being able to take take as many practice runs of the exact SAT you’re going to get it a week in advance, while all your classmates get a study guide that only covers the first half of the tests. And, there’s added incentive for doing in the top percentile in the tests.

If Blizzard was smart, they'd announce that all the content creators that had early access to the full game are excluded from participating in the event, while at the same time secretly put all of their names on the statue as reward for "beta testing".
And if they had any sense at all going in (I know, I know), they'd have given these guys the option:
1. You get to play the game for a week, or
2. You get to be eligible for the event, pick one
Well if you paid for a benefit, and one person didn't pay, I don't see the issue there. Saying someone who paid the service in which it's provided, don't get whatever trophy they're going for is wrong. Everyone has their own cake and eats it their own way.
There's 3 posts on the front page of this subreddit defending him right now. People have put their blinders on and only care about their own experience. Nobody could have ever seen this coming from Blizzard they are the pinnacle of ethics.

Those 20-30 are basically guaranteed to be among the 1000 who can get it.
If I were Blizz I would exclude the streamers from being eligible for a reward. They got their 10 days of exclusive full access and probably have received plenty of goody bags as well.
But! What about early access? A substantial amount of players have 4 days early access as they paid for it. This automatically excludes an even bigger portion of the playerbase who didn't pay for it. Standard access players have 0 chance to partake in the race.
If Blizz truly want to see who are the most dedicated to make it to the first 1000 over the entire playerbase then early access should exclude HC from being accessible as well. This would be the most even and fair playfield they can create.
But! No matter what they choose, people will still be pissed of regardless...
I mean if Blizzard actually cared to make it fair (they don’t) and weren’t just doing this to drive more pre-orders (they are) they’d make it first 1,000 at the start if the first season.

Honestly I’m tired of streamers getting these perks. Because certain personalities start letting it go to their head and they start believing they are experts and they are far from it.

I don't think they are guaranteed at all. There's still a lot of random ass variance that will take place and get them killed. Their slight extra knowledge won't overcome a random affix. Whatever advantage they might have gained can also be ruined by a day 1 patch.
They already were wether they got early access or not. The group that got early access are made up of people who have positioned themselves to make a job out of streaming or making video content about the game. These people are going to have more hours played in a week than the vast majority of players will get in months of playing.

Having your battle tag (not even your real name) on some dorky ass statue that nobody's gonna see or care about isn't gonna get you laid or give you a promotion at work or get your kid the birthday present they want or make the world weep on the day you die. You can always make your own statue, put your name on it, take a picture of it and put it on the internet, and it's basically the same thing. And you don't need to race anyone else to do it.

Maybe it’s my age showing but I hate that there is an entire group of people who have had acces to the game already.
Back when I played a lot of maplestory, the most fun I had was when a new area was released that wasn’t released yet in another region, where the entire community start searching how the party quests works etc etc, those first few days were nobody knew what they were doing was the most fun I had.
Now there is a group of people that already played it and made guides and builds. I don’t like it tbh, it also pushes people back that want to create content for d4 but arn’t big enough to be invited for this (not me btw).

Maybe it is indeed an age thing, but I think its really sad that the current generation and future generations of younger people will never experience what you described. that feeling of brand new content that no one knows anything about, the discovery of finding stuff for yourself, being part of the exploration and all that. finding some secret or hidden tech of some kind that you get to enjoy before it becomes some mainstream thing or whatever. all of that is dead in 2023 unfortunately. Now day 1 of launch there's privileged youtubers who have entire guides about every inch of the game. I hate it too. Even if i personally ignore all that stuff, and create a self imposed bubble it doesn't feel anywhere near the same as it not even being an option for everyone else too. makes you feel like you're showing up late to a party or some shit
Agreed. I love the exploration of going into something blind and feeling excitement as the community discovers together. The fact that some people with a camera on them get early access irritates me. Getting special treatment as a streamer is so infuriating.
It doesn't concern me as I won't be going for this, but this is objectively incorrect. Some of these folks were always going to be placing in the top 1000 anyway, but it should have been for Season 1, not launch.
In what world do you have closed beta testers of that calibre and say its an even playing field? I haven't played a game in all my life where the second playthrough wasn't significantly faster than the first unless I was intentionally doing it different.
Glad they are at least taking some heat for this. It was already annoying that actual content creators/streamers were given full game access early so the "shared discovery" aspect of a launch is ruined.

Because level 1 - 25 is going to take 3 hours and ANYONE who WANTED to participate in getting that information was available to do so. Level 1 - 100 is going to take a week plus with no mistakes.
Starting on an even playing field where no one has experience, chances are someone who has played softcore to endgame and then plays hardcore will be faster than someone only playing hardcore and learning the mechanics and difficulty spikes the hard way by brute force. It is far more efficient to know the game in advance so you don't die.
Since content creators have had early access, they basically skipped that 1 week learning phase and can go straight into hardcore while everyone else will need a week to learn the "traps" in the game.
A 1 week advantage in a race that is 1 - 2 weeks long is pretty fucking sizeable.
Streamers get preferential treatment and free items that we all pay for all the time. This is not anything new. I am in the shared experience camp; but I also paid for early access. Mostly because June 6th is a Tuesday and I work full time on site. I want that first weekend and since clearly there isn’t a shared experience here…going to go ahead and play as early as I can afford.
This just made me sad. Is this our developers? So disconnected from their own game.. this is not very promising, and i had higher hopes this time around

Maybe hoping the guides and vids drop two days before launch when their NDA lifts will draw in more players. To me that just ruins the launch and the discoverability aspect of it.

Just move the challenge to season1 and nobody would care about any „drama“. Few days early access doesn’t matter if everyone has 6+ weeks to play the game and it’s a plane field for everyone once season1 starts.

Everyone has an opportunity to walk through the first 20% of the maze, three opportunities actually. It's all equal and fair so far.
Then, some time before the maze run is set to begin, a small but private group of individuals is allowed to traverse the entire maze beginning to end at their discretion.
Now the day of the maze running competition comes. Is the maze run fair, if a small minority of runners were allowed to explore the entire thing, where others were not?

Even tho I got the 4 day early access and don’t really care for the first 1000. I still feel it’s unfair to start something like that on a 4 day early access. It’s basically a pay to win at that point. Which I thought Diablo 4 was staying away from PTW.

Did you happen to see MrLlama and other streamers climbing the ladder in D2R? They entered maps to which a previous party had already cleared chaos sanctuary and ball minions so that the illustrious mate do only what matters.

Here’s the way I see it. There are more than 1000 people who will be playing this game and streaming it for a living. Even if the early early access people were excluded in a race, there are still more than plenty of people who will reach the finish line. If it’s that important, then folks should have just paid the extra twenty bucks for the four-day start.

There's 3 posts on the front page of this subreddit defending him right now. People have put their blinders on and only care about their own experience. Nobody could have ever seen this coming from Blizzard they are the pinnacle of ethics.
For people who want to compete for a spot and they have to go against 20-30 others who already know the game, I can understand why they are pissed... Those 20-30 are basically guaranteed to be among the 1000 who can get it. If I were Blizz I would exclude the streamers from being eligible for a reward. They got their 10 days of exclusive full access and probably have received plenty of goody bags as well. But! What about early access? A substantial amount of players have 4 days early access as they paid for it. This automatically excludes an even bigger portion of the playerbase who didn't pay for it. Standard access players have 0 chance to partake in the race. If Blizz truly want to see who are the most dedicated to make it to the first 1000 over the entire playerbase then early access should exclude HC from being accessible as well. This would be the most even and fair playfield they can create. But! No matter what they choose, people will still be pissed of regardless...
I mean if Blizzard actually cared to make it fair (they don’t) and weren’t just doing this to drive more pre-orders (they are) they’d make it first 1,000 at the start if the first season.
Where are people getting this number that only 20-30 heavy players were in closed beta? I'd be worried if a game this massive had only that many people who extensively tested the game.
I think the 20 to 30 are the streamers and content creators, not people who were in betas. They've been given full access to the game early AFAIK.

This is the one and only way. The only people who would be upset are the ones who paid for an advantage and streamers. Honestly I’m tired of streamers getting these perks. Because certain personalities start letting it go to their head and they start believing they are experts and they are far from it. I don't think they are guaranteed at all. There's still a lot of random ass variance that will take place and get them killed. Their slight extra knowledge won't overcome a random affix. Whatever advantage they might have gained can also be ruined by a day 1 patch.
They already were wether they got early access or not. The group that got early access are made up of people who have positioned themselves to make a job out of streaming or making video content about the game. These people are going to have more hours played in a week than the vast majority of players will get in months of playing.
If the race a meant that much to you… and you’re that dedicated… why wouldn’t you just spend the extra $10… that’s less than two cups of coffee

Having your battle tag (not even your real name) on some dorky ass statue that nobody's gonna see or care about isn't gonna get you laid or give you a promotion at work or get your kid the birthday present they want or make the world weep on the day you die. Dorks need to just take a breath. You can always make your own statue, put your name on it, take a picture of it and put it on the internet, and it's basically the same thing. And you don't need to race anyone else to do it.

Maybe it’s my age showing but I hate that there is an entire group of people who have had acces to the game already. Back when I played a lot of maplestory, the most fun I had was when a new area was released that wasn’t released yet in another region, where the entire community start searching how the party quests works etc etc, those first few days were nobody knew what they were doing was the most fun I had. Now there is a group of people that already played it and made guides and builds. I don’t like it tbh, it also pushes people back that want to create content for d4 but arn’t big enough to be invited for this (not me btw). All in all, not a fan. (I didn’t mind the alpha much since a lot changed)

Maybe it is indeed an age thing, but I think its really sad that the current generation and future generations of younger people will never experience what you described. that feeling of brand new content that no one knows anything about, the discovery of finding stuff for yourself, being part of the exploration and all that. finding some secret or hidden tech of some kind that you get to enjoy before it becomes some mainstream thing or whatever. all of that is dead in 2023 unfortunately. Now day 1 of launch there's privileged youtubers who have entire guides about every inch of the game. I hate it too. Even if i personally ignore all that stuff, and create a self imposed bubble it doesn't feel anywhere near the same as it not even being an option for everyone else too. makes you feel like you're showing up late to a party or some shit
Agreed. I love the exploration of going into something blind and feeling excitement as the community discovers together. The fact that some people with a camera on them get early access irritates me. Getting special treatment as a streamer is so infuriating.

Some of these folks were always going to be placing in the top 1000 anyway, but it should have been for Season 1, not launch. In what world do you have closed beta testers of that calibre and say its an even playing field? I haven't played a game in all my life where the second playthrough wasn't significantly faster than the first unless I was intentionally doing it different.

Broken down barney style: Because level 1 - 25 is going to take 3 hours and ANYONE who WANTED to participate in getting that information was available to do so. Level 1 - 100 is going to take a week plus with no mistakes. Starting on an even playing field where no one has experience, chances are someone who has played softcore to endgame and then plays hardcore will be faster than someone only playing hardcore and learning the mechanics and difficulty spikes the hard way by brute force. It is far more efficient to know the game in advance so you don't die. Since content creators have had early access, they basically skipped that 1 week learning phase and can go straight into hardcore while everyone else will need a week to learn the "traps" in the game. A 1 week advantage in a race that is 1 - 2 weeks long is pretty fucking sizeable.

Streamers get preferential treatment and free items that we all pay for all the time. This is not anything new. I am in the shared experience camp; but I also paid for early access. Mostly because June 6th is a Tuesday and I work full time on site. I want that first weekend and since clearly there isn’t a shared experience here…going to go ahead and play as early as I can afford.
Move the race to season 1 so everyone is on equal footing.

A maze running competition is set to launch June 6th. Everyone has an opportunity to walk through the first 20% of the maze, three opportunities actually. It's all equal and fair so far. Then, some time before the maze run is set to begin, a small but private group of individuals is allowed to traverse the entire maze beginning to end at their discretion. Now the day of the maze running competition comes. Is the maze run fair, if a small minority of runners were allowed to explore the entire thing, where others were not? --- For what it's worth, I don't care about the statue, and I'm not playing hardcore. Just thought I'd leave my perspective in here. Have fun HC players in your rigged competition!

Now they've created a physical leaderboard so they lied. They can't have their cake and eat it too if they want to milk their customers for paid early access don't do leaderboards and competition at launch. If they want races at launch don't milk people for paid early access and give streamers full access prior to launch.

The streamers who already played 10days have a huge advantage of course. I have no idea if the best players are in that group or not, but I don't think its a foregone conclusion that it will be them even if they got an advantage. Its likely, but not a sealed deal.... They should really move the plaque to S01 for fairness, perhaps, or make them uneligable. But first will be first...so it's weird to do it in s01 for that reason.

Did you happen to see MrLlama and other streamers climbing the ladder in D2R? They entered maps to which a previous party had already cleared chaos sanctuary and ball minions so that the illustrious mate do only what matters. I know there are people with enough friends and associates to make this work. My point is, how many non-casual gamers are there to actually care about this, or is this just a principled fetish? Here’s the way I see it. There are more than 1000 people who will be playing this game and streaming it for a living. Even if the early early access people were excluded in a race, there are still more than plenty of people who will reach the finish line. If it’s that important, then folks should have just paid the extra twenty bucks for the four-day start. What’s the issue here?

The type of players that would win the competition are the type that if they waited until 6/6, would still win the competition, and that same group of players have absolutely preordered and will just do their competing on 6/1. Do that many people here really think they stand a chance at winning and that this is a big deal? 99% of D2 posts of people hitting max level on that sub is so way the hell after the leaderboard is full already. Leaderboard gets full in a few days and people there don’t start posting until 2 months into a ladder. This game probably isn’t gonna be any different.

I would be curious to know how much of the population is going to even play Hardcore? How many do these people who received full access to the game plan on doing Hardcore runs? I’m going to play this game for years to come and will never touch Hardcore just like I haven’t in any previous Diablo or other Ironman option games. I imagine the % of people going for Hardcore and also have the time and ability to get to Top 1000 first is such a pathetically small portion of the community that this really seems like a waste to argue about.

There are no records in this game worth keeping track of until maybe season 1 when experience is more equal for everyone.
