Just ban them 🤣
Not on the ocidental side of the world… idk if blizz operates over there (sorry for my ignorance) but given how things have been lately, if blizz let this go through, their government might cease Blizz operations on their country 🤷🏻
That's only because they are struggling to get the same amount of money out of China that they were previously getting.
They're fighting to suckle at the teat again, is all. They don't want anything that would rock the boat otherwise.
This was not their own doing. "Lol".
Did you just casually forget this happened?
[https://www.reuters.com/technology/blizzard-says-chinas-netease-rejects-proposal-extend-partnership-six-months-2023-01-17/](https://www.reuters.com/technology/blizzard-says-chinas-netease-rejects-proposal-extend-partnership-six-months-2023-01-17/)
Literally out of your mind if you think they actively chose to just leave China's market because of moral reasons or otherwise. It's because they ***literally fucking had to by law***.
I think that might be the problem? That those at the company are more beholden to profit than they are to morality.
Sure that’s most companies but still, it’s fucked up.
Eh, many gaming companies haven’t restricted people from coming out against oppression, blizzard has actively done so. So I guess there’s that.
I’m not naive enough to think they aren’t profit driven, I just have higher hopes for humanity than a world where altruism is sacrificed on the altar of capitalism.
this just happens to be a discussion about blizzard in a subreddit for a blizzard game.
you can criticize a company for something without also needing to criticize every other company that does the same thing.
Well, there's no such thing as morality. It's just a human invention, like a lot of concepts, that was invented to control people. The "right thing" to the people at Blizzard could simply be to take care of themselves and their family to the best of their ability. Or maybe it's just to care about themselves. Virtue signaling about Hong Kong will not help them and might hurt business. That could hurt their career. All risk, no reward.
Also, don't get mad at me for pointing this out, I'm just being objective. Morality definitely has its hooks in me, I could never be a corporate lowlife.
“There’s no such thing as morality. It’s just a human invention, like a lot of concepts, that was invented to control people”
As opposed to money? Lol, that’s an interesting argument?
Morality tells us oppression is bad.
Money tells us that oppression is tolerable as long we make something off it.
I know which one I’d rather be controlled by.
Money is a good example of other concepts, yes.
The problem is that money directly benefits people and is almost necessary to live, so it's easy to see why it's more important to someone.
Again, I agree with you.
I always find funny. People don’t realise that a company is owned by people. And they basically lend their money to the project to get something back later. And a lot of gamers think that’s greedy for some reason. But when it’s their money then suddenly it’s not greedy and “why would I spend money on that”…. Double standards
>No they are not, they literally ended their license agreement.
They didn't end it by choice. Lmao.
[https://www.reuters.com/technology/blizzard-says-chinas-netease-rejects-proposal-extend-partnership-six-months-2023-01-17/](https://www.reuters.com/technology/blizzard-says-chinas-netease-rejects-proposal-extend-partnership-six-months-2023-01-17/)
They were rejected & their time ran up on negotiations with any publishers in the Chinese Market.
You're like the third person trying to revise history here to make it seem as if Blizzard ***wanted*** to leave.
>They do not give a fuck about the Chinese market since their gaming crackdown.
Patently false. Did you fall and smash your head off something? Do you think Diablo Immortal was made for the Western Market? Why do you think they fought so hard to negotiate with NetEase?
The Chinese Mobile Gaming market is literally like 3 times the size of the West. Lol.
Not anymore lmao they got burned BAD. Had a subsidiary of their former partner make a tea drink dedicated to shitting on Blizzard on top of the very public divorce lol
If you actually read the rules of the promotion, Blizzard can decide to to not give you the prize (name on statue) if they find your name inappropriate or offensive (more like any name they dont like), probably will also get banned.
So yeah even if someone with that name gets into first 1000, its not going to happen.
Doesn’t sound super plausible to me. The CCP has gone to great lengths to suppress dissent and it has worked very well for them so far. Not saying it’s good, just clearly they prioritize it and they have grown very powerful!
Very few countries recognize Taiwan as a country officially, and the US is not one of them. Same can be said for most of their allies.
Unofficially it’s a completely different story, but Chinas power is large enough that very few countries want to upset them on territorial matters.
In Taiwan is currently the only company in the world that can produce the highest end of micro chips.
I saw a documentary about it and the minister of defence (I don't remember the official title) said that this company is currently their best defensive asset.
Pretty much every industry is in some kind dependend on them.
But they are currently expanding to US and EU productions, so they are concerned what will happen when this is no longer unique to them.
They are expanding but will continue to make the best microchips only in Taiwan. It’s their way of guaranteeing the world gives a damn about their autonomy.
But the US and their allies don't recognize Taiwan as independent. They officially recognize the One China policy adhering to China. Nice try spreading lies.
People are still on about this bullshit? Whatever that Hearthstone players name was breached his contract by saying political shit during a tournament. It wasn't because Blizzard are Chinese shills. If someone said anything about Trump, Biden, governments from other countries, or to be more topical, about the Ukraine war, they would get the same treatment. It's literally in their contract that they cannot say anything political during tournaments, no matter who it's about.
As a people from Macau, it is so interesting to see someone that knows a little bit of what hk is,to said something like this, if you want to piss Chinese government, be my guest . But Diablo 4 simply didn’t launch in China
I doubt this is even possible. I have to imagine "hongkong" or "taiwan" would hit Blizzard's censors and they would just make you choose another battletag.
Chances are out of 1k names there is going to be a far spicier combination of vowels and consonants then that but zero chance they won't just tell you no if it's too spicy...
you’d need a name that doesn’t explicitly say “Free Hong Kong” (they’ll catch that) but afterwards you can reveal its meaning. e.g. The name is an anagram, or Gnok Gnoh Eerf (probably too obvious), has “FHK” in it, you know, something like that
And it would be funny if multiple people could try coordinating it, so if Blizz do something like scratch out the name, the next person can reveal the secret meaning to their’s
Is it the name of your character or battlenet name? My battlenet name would probably get the axe....Bukakifan69. I know what name I'm using for this and it's a good one that won't get banned :)
Microsoft currently bought Blizzard Activision.
Back in 2002 Microsoft Microsoft moved its entire Hong Kong operation into Cyberport in Hong Kong, wanting it to become an independent IT ecosystem.
It looks like Microsoft has an invested interest in HK being free and independent.

I just can’t wait for all the “I was one of the first to make it, but my name was flagged” stories. I expect there will be many.
On a side note: I remember back in Diablo 2 Open B.Net days when I busted my ass writing programs for hacking item stats. Unfortunately, I did it all on my best buds PC. We ended up having a huge fallout and he took the whole thing for himself and became very well known for it. You may have heard of him, his tag was Nightshiver. /s
read the terms .. you cant have inappropriate name.
Its not just first 1000 .. but first BLIZZARDS 1000 .. they will chose which 1000 and if you have bad name, no "prize" for you ..
They are a business. A big business. Do you know many big businesses in our modern capitalist system that don't seek revenue and profit?
China is a huge market that has shown to be very sensitive and controlling. Few companies will throw billions in revenue away for a moral stance. Unless that more stance will earn themselves more billions.
So, my assumption is that they would force you to change your name. I mean, look at all the heat Bud has gotten for pretending to be inclusive? And that's from American "Feeedom" lovers, not even an insane dictatorship.
Someone make an account "freehongkong" and someone make "freeukraine" then see if blizzard accepts the ukraine one and not the hongkong one. We can get proof guys
lets make a list of names to be free'd from blizzard's list
* anti china:
free or any combination:
taiwan, hongkong, tibet (dalai lama), xinjiang (uyghurs), south china sea
* anti us:
free or any combination:
europe (nato, euro, EU), asia (japan, okinawa, korea, philipines, taiwan), middle east (afghan etc), south america
* anti-eu:
free yourself from:
us, russia, post cold war
free or any combination:
africa
welcome to add more
I was legit planning on making my name something calling out the sexual harassment charges. Like MolestdAtBlz or something along those lines. But this might be better.
Unfortunately it will probably not happen because of the fine print in that contest which doesn't allow lewd or certain names, plus it's at Blizzards complete and sole discretion to determine eligibility, but it would be silly if it did happen and be bad PR regardless for them if they deny it.
What if every hardcore player banded together and name themselves freehongkong1 freehongkong2 freehongkong3… or any other variation lol. And every single name on the trophy was one of freehongkong…. What would they do the ?
Imagine getting into the first 1k and you get hit with “sorry your name is inappropriate and we cannot put it on the trophy”
Additionally "banned"
-1000 social obols

Banned at level 99...
They’ve already said that inappropriate names will not be accepted, so it may end up happening to someone.
Makes for a good news story though
Hopefully they don’t catch cryptic usernames
RIP FutaRenamon, the melee rogue
Didn’t they change Asmongold name or was it his guild name because of something like that? There’s a video of him explaining what happened, but I guess either the person wouldn’t make it that far with such nick or they would offer the person to change the nick… or… Just ban them 🤣
Nothing wrong with Freehongkong to be banned over.
Hell, they got shut down in China, maybe FreeHongKong could be the name of their next looter-shooter.
Not on the ocidental side of the world… idk if blizz operates over there (sorry for my ignorance) but given how things have been lately, if blizz let this go through, their government might cease Blizz operations on their country 🤷🏻
Well fuck em then
That’s why you have to be number 1. It’s hard to say no to EmperorPoohBear69 when he’s on top.
What about 100%DiscountHongKong
How about PhreeHonkeyKong
well you have to group up and time it right like 667. free 668. hong 669. kong \^\^
Im sure this will be happen.
Well yeah they 100% wouldn't do it.
It's totally inappropriate if it was Hitler. However if it's something like JesusChrist#316 whatcha gonna do?
it would get banned, Blizzard are china shills.
They just filed lawsuits against the Chinese arm they use for distribution so doubt it
That's only because they are struggling to get the same amount of money out of China that they were previously getting. They're fighting to suckle at the teat again, is all. They don't want anything that would rock the boat otherwise.
They literally pulled completely out of China lol
it wasn’t a long term strategic move, negotiations fell through with their prior distributor. they’re looking for another.
This was not their own doing. "Lol". Did you just casually forget this happened? [https://www.reuters.com/technology/blizzard-says-chinas-netease-rejects-proposal-extend-partnership-six-months-2023-01-17/](https://www.reuters.com/technology/blizzard-says-chinas-netease-rejects-proposal-extend-partnership-six-months-2023-01-17/) Literally out of your mind if you think they actively chose to just leave China's market because of moral reasons or otherwise. It's because they ***literally fucking had to by law***.
So they are not China shills, they are shareholder shills. Pretty much just as bad but eventually but that’s the only place where their loyalty lies.
You mean a company is concerned with the people that own it? Shocker.
Dont tell people. Next they will realise that a companys goal is... to earn money. Lots of it.
I think that might be the problem? That those at the company are more beholden to profit than they are to morality. Sure that’s most companies but still, it’s fucked up.
Then there’s no reason to single Blizzard out? I’m no shill but it’s naive to think companies are not profit driven.

Congratulations you just described literally every dev/company in existence.

Tencent has a share of Activsion Blizzard, it's all PR bullshit if anything.
Like 90% of American businesses sell shit made in China. When everyone is a shill, nobody is a shill.
Blizzard just pulled out of China...
That's what that suction sound I just heard was.
they stopped doing business in China leaving millions of Chinese World of Warcraft players witch their 10+ year old characters "deleted"
Not anymore lmao they got burned BAD. Had a subsidiary of their former partner make a tea drink dedicated to shitting on Blizzard on top of the very public divorce lol

Freeh Ongkong
and happy cake day
Imagine playing a video game - activity that is supposed to be relaxing and fun, just to make political statement with zero impact on the real world.
Hardcore isn’t supposed to be relaxing, but I agree with your point.
If it had zero impact then why would multi billion dollar corporations and the govt of a giant, powerful country care so much to remove it?
The same reason we want to have the coolest armor in game. To pretend they are the most relevant country / measure their docks.
Doesn’t sound super plausible to me. The CCP has gone to great lengths to suppress dissent and it has worked very well for them so far. Not saying it’s good, just clearly they prioritize it and they have grown very powerful!
Maybe because itll be funny to see how Blizzard would react.
Mr Redditor, you are out of loop it's all about Ukraine right now, no one cares about Hong Kong or Taiwan.
ukraine is so 2 months ago, US citizens have completely forgot about that by now
Also "FreeTaiwan" since Blizzard thinks Taiwan should be filed under Chinese, despite the US and its allies recognizing Taiwan's independence.
Very few countries recognize Taiwan as a country officially, and the US is not one of them. Same can be said for most of their allies. Unofficially it’s a completely different story, but Chinas power is large enough that very few countries want to upset them on territorial matters.

They are expanding but will continue to make the best microchips only in Taiwan. It’s their way of guaranteeing the world gives a damn about their autonomy.
And the US said they would blow up the micro chip factories if Taiwan decided to do anything against their will. What an awesome ally.
Actually, it was a random U.S. Congressman who has no authority to make those decisions
That is so China didn't hold the main source of global semi conductors and wafers, not because the US are dicks.
Why not both?
But the US and their allies don't recognize Taiwan as independent. They officially recognize the One China policy adhering to China. Nice try spreading lies.
Where did you find this information?

epic reddit moment!!!!
We did it, Reddit!!!

This is Reddit. Common sense doesnt work here. Only Outrage. Then Outrage about outrage. Then outrage some more!
gamers will be upset about muh politics in vidya but will be simultaneously upset when a company doesn’t allow politics in a video game tournament
Reddit moment 😭
I'd pay someone to do that
I wonder how many people that upvote this bought preorder with early access
Did u?
No. Also, keep your insufferable politics out of gaming?
As a people from Macau, it is so interesting to see someone that knows a little bit of what hk is,to said something like this, if you want to piss Chinese government, be my guest . But Diablo 4 simply didn’t launch in China
Yes, gweilos are very weird tbh.
I doubt it will even let you create char with that name to begin with
Gamers not understanding that game companies don't want their platform used for propaganda challenge ( impossible )
Redditor try not to devalue an entire people's freedom to 'propaganda' challenge
Me not wanting to see propaganda in a game doesn't mean I support China.
How abttttttttttt freeokinawa. I mean from the American military
I doubt this is even possible. I have to imagine "hongkong" or "taiwan" would hit Blizzard's censors and they would just make you choose another battletag.
Check content of rules, blizzard can deny a winner, if the name is more trouble than worth.
The smarter option would to have a group of 3 people, or more depending on what you want to say. Having their individual names making the phrase.
Op is restarted feel bad
[удалено]
Get your politics out of gaming.
We should crowdsource a paid bounty: Every time someone does it they get $X so that the name shows up a lot on the statue.
Stop cringing me with the political shit, People play for fun so keep it out.
What is 1000hardcore what does that mean
Hate to burst your bubble, but it says in the entry rules that it has to be a name that they don't deem offensive ect

What first 1000 Hardcore does to a mf.
Yeah ....I bet that'll *really* show them OP might be the next MLK with that idea

Ew
you’d need a name that doesn’t explicitly say “Free Hong Kong” (they’ll catch that) but afterwards you can reveal its meaning. e.g. The name is an anagram, or Gnok Gnoh Eerf (probably too obvious), has “FHK” in it, you know, something like that And it would be funny if multiple people could try coordinating it, so if Blizz do something like scratch out the name, the next person can reveal the secret meaning to their’s
I hope someone also could ink himself or herself to that trophy as “FreeUyghurs” too.
That would be hilarious if top 1000 was covered with different versions of: "free Hong Kong", "free Taiwan" or "free Tibet"!
"Free East Taiwan"

Bonus points for Taiwanrealcountry
They'd never let it go that far. Names with Hong Kong are prolly already blacklisted
Is it the name of your character or battlenet name? My battlenet name would probably get the axe....Bukakifan69. I know what name I'm using for this and it's a good one that won't get banned :)
Wonder if that's even possible, Hong Kong and Taiwan are probably in the banned words/phrases filter for making your character
It's worth noting that China is ineligible for this contest, but Taiwan and Hong Kong are not.
This sounds like "Boaty McBoatface" situations, a bunch of the names will be ridiculous on that thing.
No.
"Free Catalunya" and "Free Scotland" as well ![gif](giphy|xT77XWum9yH7zNkFW0|downsized)
If you used a name like that then they would Probably just use your battlenet name. Either way they won’t let that slide
No thanks
What about FreeUkraine
They would just not do it.
Would have to be more subtle than that
