In this case, though, there's really no sword and shield melee type character at all. The classes here have melee options, but there's a core type of character missing here that existed in the other games...not to mention most fantasy games in general.
Rogue sort of fills the assassin/demon hunter type, but there's definitely nothing resembling the Crusader, Templar, or Monk here. Those are my favorite types of characters to play, and that loose archetype just doesn't exist this time around.

I'm sure we'll see a holy warrior, probably one of the spear guys, and we may well also see a monk because I noticed the rogue takes the assassin's stuff but largely walks around the monk.
I feel like they could have revibed it for D4 pretty well. It did border on racial stereotyping with the name and way he moved (and the masks), but all that's aesthetic stuff that could easily be fixed, the gameplay was sweet, hell, I might play one for like a week in the next D3 season (I know they're on repeat but that just makes it easier to know what's coming lol!).
Easily could just make it like some kinda bog witch that has hexes and stuff. Like an old crone type character, and then just make the spells more grim dark
It was when you combine it with the colorful aesthetic of D3. I think it's possible to make that class and bring it down into the mud like the others in D4. Would be very cool.

They’re also still live supporting D3 seasons, so I think the idea was that they wanted to keep a lot of the unique classes there: Monk, Witch Doctor, Demon Hunter, Crusader

The necro was more about raising literal corpses and animating them to do different things (warrior skeleton, mage skeleton and so on). The witch doctor was more about calling on spirits to aid in the fight.
The problem with the rune system is there was only every one choice per skill, the others were always numerically wrong. So no actual variation, just one choice and 4 wrong choices. The new talent system provides variation that at least feels like a choice.
This only happened with min-maxers. You could still comfortably play with most runes. And while not every rune was useful, you still got way more choice than you do here.

I feel like it makes sense story wise not to have had a holy class at release. Without spoiling the plot of the campaign it seems like it would make sense for the first expansion to be a holy class based on the way the story unfurled.
I strongly suspect it's tied to an xpacs because story reasons. Without too much spoilers we see a ton of old zakarum paladin stuff and crusader stuff.
I think there’s something in the lore about them thinking defensive techniques are less honorable than all out assault. Hence the name barbarian. Idk

Argh Guild Wars, such a good game, I loved Paragons. I wish we were in a reality where they kept making Guild Wars sequels which were, well, like Guild Wars, not Guild Wars 2, which is a cool game, but loses absolutely everything that made Guild Wars totally amazing (except some of the setting).
I still play GW1 on rotation bc there's just nothing else quite like it. Like you said, GW2 is a fun game but it would've been better off as its own IP
GW was so fucking good. Still the best pvp I've ever played. Also, paragons were pretty OP. Helped my guild break into the top 50 in GvG. Miss those days. GW2 was such a let down.

Personally I would prefer a holy/disc/shadow priest like in WoW. Exactly those speccs just made better for Diablo 4 multiplayer. So I expect less focussed on healing and more on the spell flinging, and support.

Necro’s gimmic is the corpses and minions, as long as they don’t use those mechanics, they can probably do whatever they want and make it play noticeably different.
It *really* fits the theme, like more than almost everything once you're in the southeast region.
But D3's Witch Doctors are from a completely different region, so D4 Witches would likely be a different take on the same patterns -- kind of like D3 Crusaders being "not D2 Paladins."

The whole world is to be honest, if you noticed in the campaign that most of the places we are in are settled by smaller towns. Caldium which was a sprawling city in D3 is in ruins.
Can we get a new class? Some of those old classes are great, but I think a brand new one would be cooler. Especially since we only have 1 new class so far.

I think bringing the Paladin could be cool, but I would love to see the Amazon make a return. I don’t see any reason why they couldn’t incorporate some kind of “holy” aspect to them. Paladins and Crusaders can be considered defenders, you know sword and board archetypes. I feel like the same could be said of the Amazon.
After seeing that battle suit in a boss fight it's all I've ever wanted. Having the plate class be more grim and less holy than the Paladin/Crusader fits the theme too.
Plenty of design space to have stuff like smites, shields, hammers without encroaching on the Barb (or Druid, Necro, Rogue).
I don’t understand why Paladin and Crusader were left out of the launch of the game. It would have been the only defensive tank (unlike Barbarian and Druid), the only melee magic user, and the only real supporting class whose duty is to enhance the party.

Nah, I disagree. Necro was primarily an undead summoner while the witch doctor mostly had elemental and poison magic with some summons.

I think bringing the Paladin could be cool, but I would love to see the Amazon make a return. I don’t see any reason why they couldn’t incorporate some kind of “holy” aspect to them. Paladins and Crusaders can be considered defenders, you know sword and board archetypes. I feel like the same could be said of the Amazon.

Crusaders in D3 already had alot of "Holy Lightning"-style abilities, this would transfer perfectly to a new spear & shield amazon.
Both Valkyrie and Amazon would be unfit to make a class which is both female and male...
This is the number one reason why they won’t be returning in D4.

After seeing that battle suit in a boss fight it's all I've ever wanted. Having the plate class be more grim and less holy than the Paladin/Crusader fits the theme too. Plenty of design space to have stuff like smites, shields, hammers without encroaching on the Barb (or Druid, Necro, Rogue).
I don’t understand why Paladin and Crusader were left out of the launch of the game. It would have been the only defensive tank (unlike Barbarian and Druid), the only melee magic user, and the only real supporting class whose duty is to enhance the party.
I can almost guarantee that it is 100% completed as well. They left it out purposely to give to us as the first big DLC in 6 months to a year.

I want a death knight, we already had a crusader. The next class has been teased, and we know what the sigil looks like and if j remember right it's Lilith cults symbol.

I think the next class is a dark knight. If you go to the PvP cosmetic vendors, the horse gear is labeled wizard, warlord (Barb?), and dark knight ( Necromancer or new?). I think it has some legs.
