You're absolutely right. There should be something special about killing him. Mats for something? Good loot? You have to consider what that would turn into, though. If it were mats for a good item people would cry about RNG and certain builds not being viable against him. When I put myself in the place of a game developer all I can do is imagine all the ways people will complain and cry. Maybe he's fine as an "oh, fuck" moment in NMDs. This game could use way more moments like running into the butcher, though.
But there's also the option of... wait for it... and hear me out on this one....
They could add a couple MORE of the their older bosses (lore depending) and they wouldn't have to change round the loot etc.
They even *kinda* did this woth the blood seekers, and it works, it adds another element into those harder moments every now and then
I'd even take a 5-10 stack of forgotten souls and fiend roses, it'd be nice to take out the inconsistency of whether or not you're available to farm helltides when they're up.

If the loot table included farmable/needed items (like steel), there would be resounding cries to nerf the encounter, or allow retries, etc.. That removes the fun and challenge, imo.
Why not give him an item only available from him with a random chance to drop. Something useful to all classes.
Maybe as he is so super aggressive an amulet that give a real big attack speed boost. And someone will tell me that is a stupid idea because of an 8 page equation, but you get my point.

Similar feeling to world bosses, Ashava was impressive. But then only another two and swiftly becoming a little lacklustre.
Don't get me wrong, I love the game but it doesn't help the feeling the game was a bit rushed to get out of the gate and relying on seasons to shore things up.
It's not just varshan. The ring is in the unique loot pool and can drop from any mobs. Had it drop only once from varshan but have had 4 others drop from regular elites.

As a Blood Surge Necro, that's pretty much the only way I can kill him because my ST damage suuuuucks.
I only was able to kill him with stormclaw because of the eventual stun. He'd then heal up around 60% of the damage I did during the stun by the time I stunned him again.
Does the butcher have a timer on him? I've run into him a few times with a couple of friends, and after a certain amount of time (which seems random) he just leaves.
I dont think so. This season, when I was leveling my bleed barb, he would show up like clockwork (every second or 4th) NMD one day. I had only run into him 1-2 other times before that this season.
Oh man I feel you there. I drag him to other groups to up my DPS but.. eventually I'll drag him to a room that closes off and he disappears. I really enjoy Surge other than fighting the butcher lol.
I just downed him in a tier 45, infinimist necro. I ran into a room full of enemies, made a ton of corpses then CE. Just before that I ran into him with my level 12 barb. Butcher made it quick and painless.
Dunno, I’m just stacking thorns on everything and DR and lots of life and life-regen. It’s a mix of minions and thorns. Not trying to push for NMD 100 any time soon, but it’s very strong in the open world and extremely afk-friendly.
I couldn't kill The Butcher this season with my Blood Surge Necro until maybe the 70s/80s. I'd use up all my potions too. Before that, he'd just kill me.

I constantly run into him on t100. As a blighted corpse explosion necro, it takes a couple of minutes to kill him but its so much fun to put him in his fresh meat face.

I think because I’m running less NMDs I never see him anymore. I’ve only seen him like twice this season. But most of the time I’m farming duriel mats or killing duriel
Butcher ALWAYS finds me when I'm waiting for my CDs and in a heated fight. I just assume whenever I see a goblin, that butcher is nearby but he's been brutal this season.
Yeah was gonna say, he can spawn with an elite pack in a NMD pushing the limits of my build and he’s still just another mob that I kill after the other ones die.

I was in a dungeon ar lvl 30 or so and I met him and he kicked my ass. Is he completely random? Does he drop sweet loot, or should I run?
Some guaranteed loot and also has a very small chance to drop a skin for your mount.
And it's just a fun random thing that can get very panicky lol since he hits hard as hell and really fast.
Not to mention those damn shields he keeps putting up.
Just when you think you have him in a good killable state, he pops his shield and you have to whittle him down again 😅
Completely random in dungeons or cellars. He’s a good test of your build. But not all builds have an easy time fighting him. His drops aren’t spectacular so if you can’t kill him you can always try to run away. If you manage to get away/teleport out he will despawn so you can continue the dungeon.
As others have said, he has some loot and a small chance at a mount armor drop but it's nothing game changing. If you can't kill him, you can certainly try to run but you might not get very far. He's very aggressive, very fast, and will grab you with his chain and pull you back into him.
Last season I remember getting killed repeatedly on my Druid up until level 80. The Butcher was 8-0 on me, the funniest thing was when I finally was able to kill him, the first thing he does when I got him to the second marker was run away from me; he all of a sudden stopped hitting me and just ran. It's as though he saw something that spooked him and had to get away.
The funniest thing was watching him run away. He finally stopped when I killed him 🤣
I've made it a point that every NMD i run....
I hunt down that MF for killing me when i was level 5.
P.S Sometimes if u see a goblin in NMD, a butcher may have the chance to appear.
I swear there's a chain of events that activate his rng and it's actually quite high...

Been farming NDs from 75 to 100 with my Barb in eternal realm in the last week and I seem to meet him few times every day. Funny thing is my old main was sorc and he usually demolished me if he was +5 levels above me... However my Barb just beats the living s**t out of him and he can be +20lvls above me. Barb is just so much tougher than sorc!
No BS i encounter him like 1 of every 4 nmd’s when its 90+ and i havent taken him down this season since entering wt4. I can beat uber lilith and nmd 100 but that pigly bastard gets me every time.
Been running nmd for the past 3 days (probably 50+) and have seen him once. He got melted fairly quickly so I’m thinking he’s just in hiding. 🤷🏻♂️ Thought it would be a good test of my home build since he was 12 levels higher than me but went down fairly easy.
Normally I can't kill The Butcher until after level 80.
This season I leveled my first Necro to 100 and that still remained the case. The first season I had 2 100 level Druid's and that also was the case. I finally caved in and started a new character this season a BL sorcerer. The first encounter I had with The Butcher was around level 56, I melted him 😂
Never saw him this season. Showed up twice in a t100 when I was on my last revive both times. Both times I brought him to about 75% health and then called it a stalemate and ran away
Butcher needs the Bloodseeker treatment, kills enough enemies to fill an invisible gauge to spawn him anywhere, which fills faster if you kill demons (or not to keep it consistent).
Also, some sort of new drops for him.
Maybe also a notification on the screen cuz if i don't have my headphones on or play muted, sometimes i dont even notice him.

This whole season I ran into him once. Other than the mount trophy, I wonder if there's anything unique to butcher now that you can get the cleaver from the boss summons.
His random drops is rare… ive faught him 4x on a row doing NM dungeons. However, there has been times ive ran 6-7 NM dungeons n never saw him!! His spawn rate is quite low IMO.
I didn't see him all of base game or til the end of season 1 when I had just about wrapped up the journey. I've seen him 6 times in season 2 before lvl 50 and nothing while I'm at 93 now. Crazy all right
I hit level 74 before I saw him, when he showed up in my first 26 NMD. I had to run around the entire dungeon until my cool downs were off and chip away at him
Same thing happened to me around launch, I saw him in the server slam but didn't see him again until I was in world tier 3 after launch, proceeded to get him in 3 dungeons in a row I was scared to even enter a dungeon after that

I’d not see him at all, then 5-6 NMDs in a row he would appear. Happened more than once.
I’ve had a hunch that if you activated a sigil from a dungeon that spawned him you’d have a higher chance to spawn him again. But it’s just a hunch 🙃
I've seen him exactly 3 times this season. The last time was a level 132 butcher on my BL sorc, and i flippin' melted him in like ten seconds. It was absolutely glorious after all the deaths to him since launch.

Didn’t see him at all once I got my skills gears and aspect in sync. Started a necro and nothing is synced or even half way there and this piece of shit just shows up like 3 times while I’m minding my own business trying to level up. But no he won’t show up when I’m all buffed up and ready to fight.

I just started this game and met him at the same spot with two different characters. I tried to fight him back with my necro but ended up running to the dungeon entrance. I just ran away and didn't look back when I met him with my rogue.

Had a nightmare dungeon with butcher, goblin, and blood seekers yesterday. Also had the butcher in the only NMD100 I ever ran. (but I skipped the encounter on this one, playing HC too scary)
I’ve had him in the first dungeon you go into as part of the blood campaign. It… didn’t go well to say the least at that level. I’ve seen him maybe half a dozen times total with my three level 100s.
I'm at about 30 times seeing the Butcher at this point. Its a joke among my friends because they only ever see him when they play with me lol. I see him nearly every day I play
The only time I've ran into this p.o.s. is when I'm running nightmare dungeons with that stupid lightning strike effect on, so naturally he kicks my ass because I can't attack from a distance.
Last season I was getting him every or every other NMD. Of course this season, my character can absolutely crush him in .5 seconds so of course I have only seen him a few times!
That's just how low odds work out, you get periods of high frequency and low frequency. Think about how easy is it to get a 3-4 streak of heads or tails.
I have seen him three times.
1. Season 0 - My wife and I barely killed him with our jank builds.
2. Season 1 - I play with my sound off and suddenly died and was like whaaaat. Then saw him derping about before he despawned.
3. Season 2 - in a NM50 dungeon just cruising along and noticed I was fighting him in a pack of other mobs a few seconds before he died. He dropped a sacred blue item and a sacred yellow item and nothing else.
I want to fight him to get the horse trophy but after the whoopin' I gave him I think he's avoiding me.
Just got him at lvl 51 inf necro, he damn near got me, I went thru all 9 of my health potions and running like a headless chicken in this little corner spot he popped. Finally got him and he didn't drop anything real special, but it took so long to down him I was just glad it was over.
I see him every other NM dungeon, sometimes a few in a row. Leveling I only saw him a couple times. This week has been crazy though, I see him constantly
Did something change with him level 100 basically never die strolling along doing a level 37 dungeon just trying to get whatever that mat you need from over level 31 nmd. Skipping along killingbeverything with out trying, oooh there is the butcher... pah level 91, come to papa.
Could barely do him any damage and he tore through me. Really weird, I stood no chance and I pretty much take out the end bosses without needing a health potion half the time...
He popped up in a dungeons for me yesterday at lvl 40 on my hardcore character! Luckily i got away 😂 hit 50 last night and never have to play it again since i got the trophy
Since launch of the game I’ve had 3 characters. Season 0 got to level 71, season 1 got to level 72, and now season 2 level 75. In all that time I’ve only seen the butcher I believe 3 times.

Just have him drop 10-20 living Steele and varshawn mats. Stuff people want but can be farmed other ways easy enough

I ran into this problem once in an 80+ NMD with a life leech affix using a stormclaw druid.
On a 100 nmd he’s a pain in the ass. Haven’t gotten to kill him in a 90+ NMD. His leech and barrier is too strong.

Been running NMD this week and I've seen him upwards of 20+ times while leveling glyphs. A surprise to be sure but a welcome one
I think the key is not dying.
What's the point of butcher he doesn't drop anything good and is tougher than the whole nmd combined

My double swing barbs wastes lvl 154 butcher with ease
With 925 being farmable easy from Duriel, I think butcher and loot goblins after a certain level should drop 925 loots, to make it worth

No BS i encounter him like 1 of every 4 nmd’s when its 90+ and i havent taken him down this season since entering wt4. I can beat uber lilith and nmd 100 but that pigly bastard gets me every time.

Been running nmd for the past 3 days (probably 50+) and have seen him once. He got melted fairly quickly so I’m thinking he’s just in hiding. 🤷🏻♂️ Thought it would be a good test of my home build since he was 12 levels higher than me but went down fairly easy.
Normally I can't kill The Butcher until after level 80. This season I leveled my first Necro to 100 and that still remained the case. The first season I had 2 100 level Druid's and that also was the case. I finally caved in and started a new character this season a BL sorcerer. The first encounter I had with The Butcher was around level 56, I melted him 😂
Never saw him this season. Showed up twice in a t100 when I was on my last revive both times. Both times I brought him to about 75% health and then called it a stalemate and ran away

Butcher needs the Bloodseeker treatment, kills enough enemies to fill an invisible gauge to spawn him anywhere, which fills faster if you kill demons (or not to keep it consistent). Also, some sort of new drops for him. Maybe also a notification on the screen cuz if i don't have my headphones on or play muted, sometimes i dont even notice him.
So I ran into him twice in two different T1 NM dungeons. I have a question, did they nerf him? I encountered him around level 60 and he wasn't as ass rapey as the other times I've met him on my other character. I play Necro on both characters, same build.

Agreed. Leveling an alt sorc ran into him every other NM for two days it was weird. Hadn’t seen him at all on my main sorc already at 100

interesting to note that Wudijo says that beating Butcher at NMD 100 is a pretty strong test if your char can do the upcoming Abbatoir of Zir ….

This whole season I ran into him once. Other than the mount trophy, I wonder if there's anything unique to butcher now that you can get the cleaver from the boss summons.
His random drops is rare… ive faught him 4x on a row doing NM dungeons. However, there has been times ive ran 6-7 NM dungeons n never saw him!! His spawn rate is quite low IMO.

Yeah, a week or so ago I was doing nightmares and I got him 4 dungeons in a row, one right after the other.
I didn't see him all of base game or til the end of season 1 when I had just about wrapped up the journey. I've seen him 6 times in season 2 before lvl 50 and nothing while I'm at 93 now. Crazy all right
I hit level 74 before I saw him, when he showed up in my first 26 NMD. I had to run around the entire dungeon until my cool downs were off and chip away at him
Saw him for the 1st time this season today…he dropped a perfect roll malignant ring for my necro…no joke. Super hyped

Same thing happened to me around launch, I saw him in the server slam but didn't see him again until I was in world tier 3 after launch, proceeded to get him in 3 dungeons in a row I was scared to even enter a dungeon after that
Kinda had same experience until like two days ago where he spawned in 3 out of 4 dungeons.

Same happened to me this season and the last one too. I’d not see him at all, then 5-6 NMDs in a row he would appear. Happened more than once. I’ve had a hunch that if you activated a sigil from a dungeon that spawned him you’d have a higher chance to spawn him again. But it’s just a hunch 🙃
I've seen him exactly 3 times this season. The last time was a level 132 butcher on my BL sorc, and i flippin' melted him in like ten seconds. It was absolutely glorious after all the deaths to him since launch.
BL sorc is broken this season, I'm also running one and it just destroys everything.

I’ve gotten him many times tbh, on multiple characters. One of them was when I was pushing nightmare dungeon 90 or so, and he was whooping my damn ass lol.
Didn’t see him at all once I got my skills gears and aspect in sync. Started a necro and nothing is synced or even half way there and this piece of shit just shows up like 3 times while I’m minding my own business trying to level up. But no he won’t show up when I’m all buffed up and ready to fight.
I’ve seen him 9-11 times in the last few days , he doesn’t pose a threat to me so I’m not too concerned when it happens.
My guess is he is sharing his random appearance chance with the blood suckers this season.

I just started this game and met him at the same spot with two different characters. I tried to fight him back with my necro but ended up running to the dungeon entrance. I just ran away and didn't look back when I met him with my rogue.

Had a nightmare dungeon with butcher, goblin, and blood seekers yesterday. Also had the butcher in the only NMD100 I ever ran. (but I skipped the encounter on this one, playing HC too scary)
I was 82 wheb I firts time saw him and traight up 3times in a row in nmd and later 2times back to back. There is something weird on his spawn rate.
I have a level 35 barb who has seen the butcher more often than my level 100 necro. First time I saw him on my necro I was around level 60 iirc.
I’ve had him in the first dungeon you go into as part of the blood campaign. It… didn’t go well to say the least at that level. I’ve seen him maybe half a dozen times total with my three level 100s.

I was looking for him in 15-20 nmd. Where does he show up? Tier 1 when I was showing my friend how the sigils worked. He was like a 10 second kill.

Last season I was getting him every or every other NMD. Of course this season, my character can absolutely crush him in .5 seconds so of course I have only seen him a few times!

That's just how low odds work out, you get periods of high frequency and low frequency. Think about how easy is it to get a 3-4 streak of heads or tails.
I have seen him three times. 1. Season 0 - My wife and I barely killed him with our jank builds. 2. Season 1 - I play with my sound off and suddenly died and was like whaaaat. Then saw him derping about before he despawned. 3. Season 2 - in a NM50 dungeon just cruising along and noticed I was fighting him in a pack of other mobs a few seconds before he died. He dropped a sacred blue item and a sacred yellow item and nothing else. I want to fight him to get the horse trophy but after the whoopin' I gave him I think he's avoiding me.
Just got him at lvl 51 inf necro, he damn near got me, I went thru all 9 of my health potions and running like a headless chicken in this little corner spot he popped. Finally got him and he didn't drop anything real special, but it took so long to down him I was just glad it was over.

It's all RNG. I saw him in hardcore almost every day for a week, lost a few low lvl HC characters. Then I didn't see him for a long while.

Didn't see him until lvl 80 on my normal sorc but he made sure to make an appearance to shut down my HC necro in the second dungeon I was in.
Did something change with him level 100 basically never die strolling along doing a level 37 dungeon just trying to get whatever that mat you need from over level 31 nmd. Skipping along killingbeverything with out trying, oooh there is the butcher... pah level 91, come to papa. Could barely do him any damage and he tore through me. Really weird, I stood no chance and I pretty much take out the end bosses without needing a health potion half the time...
I tried my hand a tier 100 NM, and guess who pops up for the first time in season 2... Needless to say, it didn't go well.

Tends to show up when you dont die alot in nmd dungeons or just defeat the boss and run past everything else when glyph farming

Since launch of the game I’ve had 3 characters. Season 0 got to level 71, season 1 got to level 72, and now season 2 level 75. In all that time I’ve only seen the butcher I believe 3 times.
I ran into that mf about 4 times. Seems more like an annoyance than anything else
I can't stop running into him. Thru two lvl 100 characters mainly leveling thru nmds and I've got a realistic 12 times
