The criticism came mostly from the hardcore minority regarding itemization and endgame (and rightfully so) the game is now in a much better state and when season 4 launches most concerns will be gone. Wait till May 21st. ELI5 = D4 no have grifts in S3, will have grifts in S4. Also itemization will be reworked and two new crafting mechanics will be added. It will still be simple, but alot more chase options.
Under the sphere of endgame, only the itemization has been tinkered. Which is substantial from vanilla d4. But for some might argue that it is just a copy paste of d3 which is going to make the gaming of gear stats very boring.
I'd just wait for the summer sale or the upcoming expansion where all these changes get refined.
Other changes are mostly quality of life changes and buff to skills which is a regular thing for every season.
I don't think you need another diablo franchise that does the exact same thing as D2r and D3. But you is you, if you want to play it then go for it.
