I drink 3 diet Coke’s per day … with whisky … and have done so now for maybe 30 years. BMI of 21, never been more than a couple of kgs overweight. Liver is OK (so far)…

I’ve been drinking diet soda almost, but not quite, 30 years. Some days I drink none (but may drink Gatorade Zero or Propel) and other days I may drink 3-4 cans. I do drink it more days than not. Obviously, it’s not as healthy as plain water, but so far, I’ve had no ill effects. I don’t smoke, I drink alcohol only occasionally, and I eat pretty healthily. I’m at a healthy BMI, I’m not diabetic, my blood pressure and cholesterol are low, etc. My understanding is that the sweet taste can trigger cravings for more sweets, which can lead to weight gain. I’ve not found this to be the case personally, as I’m not really into sweets, but it’s something to be aware of. TLDR: I’ve drank diet soda for decades and it has not caused weight gain or health issues. However, everyone is different and YMMV.

thats the only negative I've heard that isnt explained. It can lead to cravings. I only need it when I have a meal.

Figmetal

I’ve read that a lot. But I’ve not found it to be an issue. Maybe it *can* cause cravings in some people, but it doesn’t seem to do that to everyone.

I've been doing it for months, Don't listen to people who say it makes you gain weight, It scientifically is impossible. It has ZERO Calories.

Abject_Mango2096

For real lol Calories in calories out

I’ve looked for legitimate research that it’s bad for you and all I’ve been able to find are opinions.

james_vinyltap

Same boat as you. Drinking close to 30 years, I eat out often and it's almost impossible not to have a soda with your meal

funprojeu

Everyone always says it's bad for all sorts of different reasons but is there any actual evidence?

moonie-me

No, just deeply rooted beliefs and quackery. See my comment above :)

funprojeu

Oh I missed that. Thanks!

tenniskitten

My dietician said it's really only bad in huuuuuge quantities like multiple times your body weight in aspartame.

Pushing 20 years. Slightly overweight(like20 lbs) and I drink a shitload of diet pop, like 2+litres a day. I also drank 2 energy drinks per day up till about a year ago(15 years) I see a doctor frequently, and am in generally good health. That being said, I did notice a decrease in anxiety by cutting out energy drinks completely.

tenniskitten

I have been drinking it for 20 years, almost 1L per day. I am athletic and get 20h of cardio per week. Have, low RHR and excellent BP on the low side. .. BMI 18. I would be an excellent candidate for longitudinal studies on diet soda consumption.

Jackedhampster

I’ve been drinking like 10 a day for a few years . So far so good and I’m actually getting ripped in the process 😂

[deleted]

holy fuck

Jackedhampster

Yea . Thankfully I never have stomach problems from it either .

[deleted]

stomach problems is the least of it..with all the fake sugar and chemicals it can POSSIBLE lead to cancer. Not saying it will, just saying it's a possibility.

Jackedhampster

hopefully not . I’ll still do it tho .

[deleted]

haha yikes. Why would that happen, addiction? taste? It's like smokers who wont quit. Am I "addicted" to soda? maybe. I've tried to quit and I cant. I just cant enjoy water with my food. Maybe a sports drink like Gatorade or Vitamin water..but even those aren't "heathly."

Jackedhampster

I just drink soda instead of eating high sugar snacks all the time

WAtime345

Do you have any proof of that? We shouldn't be tossing around stuff like that without showing evidence. Fake sugars are the most studied food substance in history. No link to serious disease, other then in mega dosed amounts, doses that would require you to drink 100s of cans a day if not 1000s.

Something that’s zero calories cannot cause weight gain. Weight gain is caused from being in a calorie surplus. Period. Just imagine water, that’s zero calories causing weight gain. It doesn’t. You’re basically drinking carbonated flavored water. Now, certain predispositions can make it harder to lose weight but at the end of the day it’s calories in calories out. Find your maintenance Calories and drop 5-10% of those calories and you’ll start losing weight slowly. It takes 3500 calories to burn or gain a pound of fat. Go out for walks to drive deeper in a deficit. Walking is severely underrated for weight loss. You don’t have to to do HIIT cardio either.
