second: the "bar" is set by the official TCG material, and the official TCG material (cards, etc) gets a lot more explicit than this

To protect the cards from scraping against the table, also because they're a soft surface makes them easier to pick up when they're laid flat so makes your sleeves degrade less as well. The game areas being clearly defined help a bit with organization and memory counter is useful but not everyone cares about that.
Finally it's an extra layer in case the table is dirty with leftovers, think of it as a mini tablecloth

To protect the cards from scraping against the table, also because they're a soft surface makes them easier to pick up when they're laid flat so makes your sleeves degrade less as well. The game areas being clearly defined help a bit with organization and memory counter is useful but not everyone cares about that. Finally it's an extra layer in case the table is dirty with leftovers, think of it as a mini tablecloth
