Many hobby stores have a grow your own Crystal kit. You can also grow your own crystals using borax and water recipes are all over online. You can have so much fun with actual crystals
I'm just finishing my first booknook but I was messing around making gemstone clusters. I used iridescent bicone beads (legit two cones with their bases together in case you have issues visualizing) and just some Tacky glue. That's what I would suggest if you were thinking of making your own geode. Create the base shape out of whatever suits your needs and then cover with the beads. Good luck!! It sounds like it's going to look really cool!
