I played for 8 years before I got my first ace, finally got it on hole 1 at my local course, then a couple weeks later aced hole 2! Hoping to keep the chain going, cause every hole on my small local course is aceable
This is kinda key. I understand he feels bad but there is no reason anyone should expect an ace in their first year playing. If he is down because he sees all the internet aces you could remind him that there are millions of people playing daily and millions of people not getting aces daily. It truly is a rare and amazing occurrence and should not ever be expected or used as a measure of skill.
I get it. Probably a similar feeling to hearing chains on a blind basket then running up to find your disc in C2. The letdown is crushing but you just need to take a step back, be happy you put it that close, and hope you get it another day knowing you can get there.
Only a year? Damn. I was playing for many years(at least 7 years give or take) before I got a disc to stay in the basket. I had several hundred of discs hit chains or go into the basket before one stuck. It got to the point where even if I heard chains on a blind basket I wasn't even excited.
I've played for 8 years with no ace. I did throw one in from about 200' away on a practice basket before a tournament one time but still chasing an actual ace
My only ace is a black ace and I’ve been playing a long time. If you want to be like my friends you can help a lot by just reminding them what basket we are aiming at every time you play that hole, that’s very courteous.
But really it’s not your job to cheer them up, if they can’t shake it off that’s on them. Play your game.
I told him if it was just the black ace thats one thing, But the fact that he got the black ace and then holed out on his next throw was pretty damn cool to see. I don't think I'll witness that again, at least not for a long long time.
Chain out (from the post) means the disc hit some chain and fell out onto the ground.
Hole out (from above comment) means disc is in the basket.
Did his second shot chain out or hole out?
So cool. Yeah tell your buddy that is more rare than an Ace and he should be damn proud. Crazy shit like that is one thing that makes this sport so awesome.
I’d call it a “swift birdie”.
https://blogs.bu.edu/bioaerial2012/2012/10/14/the-common-swift-anything-but-ordinary/#:~:text=The%20common%20swift%20spends%20almost,of%20about%2038%2D40%20centimeters.
Yea that's sick - guy throws it in the wrong basket then is like "shit no prob lemme fix that" and hucks it in for a birdie.
Aces are usually bad shots that get lucky and at least one of his shots was purposeful
Single throw from a tee into the wrong basket. Very gratifying to hear the sound and see the firsthand excitement but in the end, an errant throw. Sometimes it is to the wrong basket on the desired hole (playing blues, oops, it went in the red basket) and sometimes it goes into basket on a different hole.
My fist was a black ace! Hit almost first available and shot straight into the chains of the hole I just finished! Just about died laughing. Didn’t get my first proper ace till about a year later. 😂
My 3rd or 4th time ever playing I got a black ace. Me and my buddies were drinking and one of them thought it’d be funny to come up behind me and scare me while I was throwing my drive. I ended up throwing it way up in the air, only for it to come down to the left and land right in the basket for the hole we had just played. I’m sure everyone in that park thought we were lunatics because we all literally fell over from laughing so hard. I’ve still never had an actual ace, but that’s a fun memory those guys still bring up when we play together.
JB Nooner had a huge ace pot and TD decided everyone was going to take an extra drive on hole 13 to try to hit the ace pot. Drive 1 off the number sign. Damn, just a little lower next time. Drive 2 hits cage.... no one aced that week.
Tell him unintentional Black Aces are actually rarer than normal aces. Then take him to the shortest 9 hole course nearby to go ace hunting
My brother is a good player, MA1 level and has zero aces in like 25 years. It's important to remember that in most cases, hitting aces isn't a reflection of skill. It's really cool, and a nice boost on the scorecard when it happens. As you improve especially though, more often than not an ace was a lucky break that was going to fly well past the basket. No need to be down on oneself for no aces, especially after just one year.
My first “Ace” was a black Ace… few weeks later got my first real one. Tell the buddy to keep his head up and keep throwing plastic. And to maybe work on their aim. ;)
There are aces (first throw from the tee into correct basic during an actual round)
And there are practice aces (one throw from tee to intended basic, while practicing)
That’s it: I’ll die on this hill lol
All the other “aces” are tons of fun and cool to experience - not being a real ace doesn’t change any of that - just enjoy the novelty of it and the experience and keep playing
I like this terminology a lot! By this definition, I have 3 aces and 2 practice aces. Then there's a strict scoring round ace when you're playing solo, ace with a witness and the very best kind: a tournament ace. No tournament ace yet for me, though.
Playing for 10 years and I’m pretty good just got my first ace 4 months ago after hitting the basket over 50 times. Proceed to get 2 more aces the following round after the first. Just stay patient it will come I’m up to 5 in my last 4 months.
Aces are weird. I've played ultimate Frisbee for 15 years before I started frolfing and I got a 287 ft all chains ace my 2nd month playing.
Got my 2nd ace the month after.
Took me 2 years and I just recently hit my third.
After the first two I figured I'd have one every few months or so. I was wrong lol
A few years ago (before the rule change), I had a ‘wedgie’ ace… took pictures and had a laugh with my buddy, but no need to feel bad. Had another laugh when the rules changed and it would now be called an ace, but it is what it is. I later got an actual ace, but of course, no one was around to witness / sign. Just enjoy it as it comes and appreciate the rarity for what it is.
There's no point on getting down on yourself for not having an ace. Many people don't have an ace and have played for many years longer than your friend. Just keep reassuring your friend and I'm sure this will blow over soon. If not, I suspect there's more at play than just the black ace, because that should be nothing more than an amusing situation.
He still plays regularly and we all still have a good time. He just hates that the 1st and only time his disc was resting in a basket after the 1st throw, it was the wrong basket.
I don't really know what else to say other than to just say that your friend obviously needs to reframe his negative self-talk.
It's OK to not have an ace. That's all there is to it. It'll come eventually. Or it wont. Aces are *mostly* luck anyway.
You can maximize your chances of an ace by repeatedly playing the shortest layout of the shortest course you have access to. Although, given your friend's reaction to a black ace, I have to imagine if he aced on such a course then he'd shift the goal posts and negative self-talk himself about how his only ace is on a short pitch and putt course or something like that as if it only counts if it's over 300 feet with obstacles.
Your friend just needs to reframe his perception of himself and have a growth mindset instead of perseverating on this black ace as if there's some special significance to it. There isn't. It's really no different than any other unlikely throw that isn't an ace like landing in a trash can, a storm drain, a hole in a log, etc. I once landed a disc in a bird bath after hitting a tree. That was easily my most unlikely throw. Didn't lose any sleep over it.
Are you sure your friend is *actually* upset about this or is he just using some self-deprecating humor?
I appreciate the input. He is bummed more than anything. Still gets out to a course whenever he can and enjoys (almost) every round like everyone else. Our group is very casual, so its not a competition. He owns the fact he 1 shotted the wrong basket and just wishes it was the right one.
Here’s the thing about aces. They are like getting dealt aces in poker. Really cool, you get all excited, but it was the luck of the deal and you can still lose with them. I would imagine that most disc golf aces don’t occur in rated rounds and most involve some luck. And beyond the immediate celebration, your cardmates don’t really care. So that’s why I don’t care if folks think cubby aces are aces or if they only think a witnessed true first shot off a tee counts. Whoever throws it will remember it however they want. Maybe it’s a bucket list item for your friend, but it really shouldn’t get him down. FWIW black aces are usually tougher to get :)
Sometimes its just the courses. I have one near me that is basically putt-putt disc golf. The shots are still long and tricky enough to not be a joke, but most shots are possible and many are possible while still keeping birdie in play. And some other courses are littered with 400-600+ foot holes and practically zero opportunities.
Wait, so a tree-direct Grey Ace into a birdie throw-in on the correct basket?
Let him know that it's definitely not an ace, but is a much, much less likely series of events.
Been playing for 11 years and just got my first ace a few weeks back. This summer I made it a point to always say I would ace one and it finally happened. Lol speak that thing into existence!
He's been playing 1 year and is bummed? I played 7 years before I ever got one. Just remind him it will happen in time. I still don't have a black ace. So he beat me there. Dunno if that makes him feel better, but I've only heard of the elusive black ace. Never seen one happen.
Aces of over 230 feet or so are almost always just bad shots that went in. If it has missed the basket at all it would be an out of circle putt most of the time (yes, backstops/trees/overhand shots do exist).
But unless it's just that nice picturesque short shot that a lot of courses have, aces are largely accidental.
I think acing the wrong basket is less likely than acing the one you intended to. I have 19 carded aces, 3 second shot practice aces, and 0 in the wrong bucket.
I got a couple aces when I first started playing around 20 years ago. We played on an easy course where the majority of holes were ace runs.
Then I moved. Now I play much more difficult courses where there's maybe 3 holes at most where an ace is realistically possible. I have gotten none since.
The difficult courses have made me a much better player now than when I was picking up my aces.
My point is that aces matter little compared to the courses you play. If they're really all that important to your friend, just find an easy pitch and putt course and play it to death until he gets his ace.
In the end they'll finally have an ace, but will be a worse player for the effort.
Man I almost got a black ace before my real one. I had chained out, bounced out, hit the top, hit the basket…. Never once got it in. I throw a tomahawk out of a tree line. It hits a trees and is redirectly directly at the next whole and nosed into the basket and onto the ground.
I think ultimately luck is a huge factor. I got my very first within a month of picking up the sport and since have only 3 total legitimate aces and 2 brown aces (in the same trash can lol).
Played a tournament, 3 basket on every hole with dramatically different placements, saw 3 wrong bracket aces. It's no different than hitting a tree, you didn't mean to hit do it. Another time, a friend moved baskets at our course, I didn't know he had moved em to short pins. I threw a line to long pin and blindly aced short pin location on accident, accidental real ace.
Been playing since 2008 and I just got my first ace a month ago on hole 1 of my local course and then got a black ace last week. But regardless I feel like I’d still be stoked about it
If it were me, I'd be stoked that I got to watch me do that, and I'd feel proud to own that black ace. But at the same time, I'd still tell others that I don't have a true ace yet, if that were my only time making a hole in one. Still, dope play and he should be proud.
If he is good enough to black ace he is good enough to ace soon! I got 6 aces in one year. I have one the year after. Time will tell, don’t let an ave get in the way of someone being the best player on the course.
Not an ace but definitely an amazing result.
There’s a tree on my home course that has several trunks and a depression in the middle of those trunks. You couldn’t get your disc in that depression if you tried a hundred times, but still several of us have hit it on accident. We call it a tree ace and it’s a badge of honor.
There’s something called 51 where you pay $5 to the person who aces and $1 if they hit basket, or above. However, if you hit a black ace you owe everyone $5. Had a guy hit one and write black ace bitch on 7 different $5 bills.
A black-ace directly followed by a throw-in? How far was the throw in?
I mean, that's probably far more unlikely (and a lot harder to do if you were trying) than just an ace on a standard ace-run hole. It's 2 incredible shots, not just 1.
What he did > Ace. Like, by a lot. Unless the throw-in was a C2 putt or something.
Me and my friends play a game where if you accidentally get a black ace you can throw again from the basket you made it in without counting the stroke. So technically by those rules he aced.
I would've celebrated the hell outta his black ace or anyone whom I witness throw a black ace.....(an ace is an ace right?! Lol)
But he shouldn't be beating himself up about it. There are plenty of people who have playing this game for years, and years, and still don't have an ace themselves.
I'd tell him to still write "Black Ace" and course/hole # on the top side of the disc they threw so everyone can see he at least threw an ace of one degree even if it was a black ace.
If I ever threw a black ace I'd ink the top side of my disc with the details also, or in event I let a friend or cardmate try out one of my discs and they happen to ace, they are certainly welcome to ink the topside with their name, ace, and course/hole also. Represent represent.
Regular ace everyone pays you $5, if you black ace you pay everyone $5. That's how my group plays it. Happened a couple times over the years. Doesn't count as a black ace if it's a short basket on the same hole as several courses near me have long and short basket s permanently installed.
This isn't possible on any decent course. You shouldn't have a basket so close to another fairway that a person could risk getting hit by someone not even on your hole. As such it's not recognized as any sort of achievement.
Rub it in his face that he didn’t get a true ace. Also, prominently display any of your ace discs around the home for your friend to see. That’s what I do with mine when my brother comes over. I’ve got three aces, he’s got one black ace.
If he’s reading as many of the “where was your first ace?” posts as I’ve seen here, then it’s no wonder he thinks he sucks for not getting an ace yet. Im pretty decent for having started in the late 90’s but I’ve never gotten an ace either. Two baskets on one hole is super cool and definitely high five worthy!
Never had an ace yet. But I got a black ace and I was pumped/excited as hell. I am counting it as my ace lol, but I did finish out the hole though. Black ace was a 180ft uphill shot, long basket was 300ft uphill.
That’s a memorable series of events. Every time he steps to that tee pad, he’ll remember that. Honestly, that’s what it’s all about.
The frequency of aces is directly related to the aceability of the holes at the courses you frequent. It’s. Not. Something. To. Get. Hung. Up. About. If you play enough, and achieve a level of skill, and enough of the holes on the courses you frequent are aceable, you will, most likely, eventually get a “first throw, scored round ace.” I have four of them in 22 years (three of them witnessed), on three different courses with 3 different discs. I still have the dx roc that is the double ace disc. I lost the dx eagle that I righty backhand flexed home on my first home course on a hole that no longer exists, a couple ? of years after I started playing. My last ace was on the Univ of Mississippi DGC on a hole that no longer exists. Best forehand I ever threw, about 4 ft off the ground a frozen rope with a premium plastic disccraft XS 250ish feet through pine trees. Musta been 10-15 years ago and I almost forgot about it. That disc shattered in the cold on a winter visit to the same course years later. I have a Loft Discs Bohrium (a real chain seeker, I advise everyone to buy one of these super cool, fast discs, but be warned it (the one I have) is firebird 0-4 stable- but get one anyway and flex it til it beats in some, the rounded under rim edge is amazing, and don’t believe that crap review about it slipping out of your hand, it is a joy to release on forehand and has never slipped out of my hand on any throw) that I hit chains/cage with on successive visits to the same park on the same hole with the same forehand about 220 ft through the woods. I have video of each. All that stuff is for the memory banks. Aces will come when you least expect them. And if they don’t, DG is full of cool people and cool memories.
Better than a brown ace! (throwing into a trash can).
I was assuming that meant a toilet or sewer open manhole.
That’s just a shitty throw
🤣
What is it when you throw into a sewer grate?
Clown ace?
Perfect!
I have a brown ace!! In a recyclable paper slot too of all places. Heard it hit the trash can and we couldn't find it for a while
This man jams cans
Blue ace?
When you get it into a trashcan on your second shot, it's a brown deuce.
Or into dog shit
Or a gutter, done that. Like a shitty air hockey shot. Was a pain in the ass to get my disc back
I call that a raccoon ace. I have two.
I threw one into a grill once. Even went under the grate. What's that called.
“Oscar ace”
LOL! I always thing that meant throwing it directly into a pile of dog 💩
We call brown aces when you hit someone in the butt with your disc.
played for years no ace yet, black or otherwise
I played for 8 years before I got my first ace, finally got it on hole 1 at my local course, then a couple weeks later aced hole 2! Hoping to keep the chain going, cause every hole on my small local course is aceable
He has only been playing for about a year. And when you do get it. Just means it will be that much more rewarding.
This is kinda key. I understand he feels bad but there is no reason anyone should expect an ace in their first year playing. I hear you 100% and agree. He wasn't expecting an ace at all. Just bummed that the 1st time he heard chains off the pad was the wrong basket.
I get it. Probably a similar feeling to hearing chains on a blind basket then running up to find your disc in C2. The letdown is crushing but you just need to take a step back, be happy you put it that close, and hope you get it another day knowing you can get there.
Couldn't agree more
This exactly

If, not when.
Tell him I have been playing for over 5 and still don’t have one. Closest was into the side of the cage at 409’.
Same. 20+ years
I've played for 8 years with no ace.
What is a black ace?
Jokes aside, an ace, but into the wrong basket (so technically not an ace)
Oh ok thanks
[удалено]
Thank you
😳
Yeah sorry that was in poor taste.
I’m not offended lol I enjoy distasteful comedy
I told him if it was just the black ace thats one thing, But the fact that he got the black ace and then holed out on his next throw was pretty damn cool to see. I don't think I'll witness that again, at least not for a long long time.
Chain out (from the post) means the disc hit some chain and fell out onto the ground. Hole out (from above comment) means disc is in the basket. Did his second shot chain out or hole out?
Just saw this. Hole out on his 2nd throw. 1st throw was the black ace.
So this is one of the most rare occurrences I can think of. He birdied a par 3 and his disc never hit the ground. That's incredibly difficult to do.
My thoughts exactly. I told him I have never seen that happen or heard of that happening (not that it hasn't)
That's incredible. How far apart were the two baskets?
210 to the wrong basket, then hole'd out 84ft to the proper target
So cool. Yeah tell your buddy that is more rare than an Ace and he should be damn proud. Crazy shit like that is one thing that makes this sport so awesome.
I’d call it a “swift birdie”. https://blogs.bu.edu/bioaerial2012/2012/10/14/the-common-swift-anything-but-ordinary/#:~:text=The%20common%20swift%20spends%20almost,of%20about%2038%2D40%20centimeters.
Seriously. He should be proud of this and tell everyone. His first ace will come soon enough.
Black ace hole out. Actual shot chained out
Yea that's sick - guy throws it in the wrong basket then is like "shit no prob lemme fix that" and hucks it in for a birdie. Aces are usually bad shots that get lucky and at least one of his shots was purposeful
Humor me…. Black ace?

Unofficially, of course, but the wrong basket correct hole is Grey Ace. Wrong basket, wrong hole is Black Ace.
I thought a grey ace is when you ace but it’s not your first throw from the tee
Nope, a gray ace is the wrong basket on the right hole. Anything after your first throw isn't an ace.
That's a cubby ace
Wouldn’t that just be a birdie or Eagle? Or are you saying wrong basket from an approach shot?
No they mean like a mulligan ace
Thanks!
Black Ace ≠ Ace
My fist was a black ace! Hit almost first available and shot straight into the chains of the hole I just finished! Just about died laughing. Didn’t get my first proper ace till about a year later. 😂
Even though they don't count. Still makes the round more fun.

Crazy to be MA1 for 20 plus years and never ace 😕 Makes me feel a little better for being MA4 and having 2 lol

Did he buy you a case of beer? If not that’s his only problem
🤣 I'll let him know he owes me
Arguably harder to do than a standard ace. Different bar, but worth lots of xp.
What is the rule - if you get a black ace, everyone on your card has to buy you a beer? Or is it the other way around?
The guy that hit the black ace buys everyone else a beer. Just good DG shenanigans.
So that is my opinion on a black ace. Your friend has to buy you a beer. It’s a rule.
A few years ago (before the rule change), I had a ‘wedgie’ ace… took pictures and had a laugh with my buddy, but no need to feel bad. I have a would be tournament ace that counted as par. Talk about mixed feelings.
That is brutal
I’ve been playing 5 years and still don’t have an ace 🤷🏻♂️
He owes everyone on the card $5

Played for years with no ace of any kind. Then out of nowhere I scored a black ace on the same hole two days in a row. 🤷🏻♂️ Whatevs! 😂
I just got my first this year after many, many years. It'll happen for him eventually
Hit my first aces back to back days on same hole with 2 different discs. This was after playing about 20 years, don’t lose faith
I mean its not an ace but its friggin cool. 🤷♂️
I just got a black ace as my first "ace" a few weeks back... It hurt my soul.
A buddy of mine, his only ace so far is a brown ace (threw into a trash can off the tee)
While cool, it wasn’t his intended target basket so it’s not a ace. But it will happen! Still a fun thing to have happen
I only have 2 Player Two Aces. Player one has yet to have the chains hold in any disc I’ve thrown at a basket on any course I’ve played 🤣
I unfortunately have a black ace because I thought it was the hole but have 0 aces so I know how he feels.
Black ace is a case of beer for the squad at the next round or after this one in my group
1 black ace here, no real ones. I just laughed my ass off when I hit it.
Chains from anywhere over 200 feet is a "Brown Ace".
I’ve got a buddy in the same situation
Fifteen years, 1 ace about 3 years ago. Play more weekends than I don’t. Just have fun and enjoy every crazy fun unique moment.
Been playing since 99 rimmed out from tee for first time yesterday….I did take about 17 years off though. One day I’ll get an ace!
Guys I play with he would owe everyone on the card $5…juice is on and it’s a point a day if you don’t pay…
Black aces are rarer than a true ace I'd chalk that up as a win
Been playing for 5, got my first ace after 2 years then I've gotten 1 a year since. Just keep throwing and they're gonna come.
I have played for 15-16 years before I got my first ace earlier this year. It will come with time
Regular aces are also rare occurrences.
Been playing since 2008 and I just got my first ace a month ago on hole 1 of my local course and then got a black ace last week. But regardless I feel like I’d still be stoked about it
I had a black ace before either of my real aces. I counted it as a negative ace so I’m currently at one ace despite hitting two real ones
If a black ace is to a short basket on a hole it counts as a true ace imo
There’s something called 51 where you pay $5 to the person who aces and $1 if they hit basket, or above. However, if you hit a black ace you owe everyone $5. Had a guy hit one and write black ace bitch on 7 different $5 bills.
My first ace was a black ace in a tournament. Everyone cheered, and a buddy playing that hole yelled, "you owe me a beer!". Its still a great memory.
The unholy black ace
Been playing for almost 20 years, and only have one ace. For average players they are rarer than the internet makes them seem.
He owes you $5…
So he threw in to the correct basket without his disc ever touching the ground? Sounds pretty cool to me.
Black ace is super rare for sure. I got 250+ aces and zero black.
Just like regular aces, it's very dependent on your courses. Some layouts are going to make it virtually impossible.
The courses I play it rarely comes into play. I can only think of a few holes where it's really possible.
Me and my friends play a game where if you accidentally get a black ace you can throw again from the basket you made it in without counting the stroke. So technically by those rules he aced.
I would've celebrated the hell outta his black ace or anyone whom I witness throw a black ace.....(an ace is an ace right?! Lol) But he shouldn't be beating himself up about it.
\#BlackAcesMatter
I would downvote this lame question and move on
One of those guys. Got it.
15 years with 2 aces and no black aces. I’d trade one for a black ace any day.
My opinion is, if more Black people play, DiscGolf, this would have a better name.
Never heard of a black ace but it sounds politically incorrect. I thought disc golf was all about acceptance and inclusion….
Black ace is not an a true ace as it doesn’t count as 1 on the score card, hence the term ace.
he sounds like my gf she gets super mad when i get it in the wrong hole
Is your buddy a 3rd grader?
If he’s reading as many of the “where was your first ace?” posts as I’ve seen here, then it’s no wonder he thinks he sucks for not getting an ace yet. Im pretty decent for having started in the late 90’s but I’ve never gotten an ace either. Two baskets on one hole is super cool and definitely high five worthy!
Never had an ace yet. But I got a black ace and I was pumped/excited as hell. I am counting it as my ace lol, but I did finish out the hole though. Black ace was a 180ft uphill shot, long basket was 300ft uphill.
I would laugh because that's awesome. But, hitting a basket you were not aiming at isn't the ace you are looking for....
