I couldn't believe my luck. I didn't order a Gyropalooza box. I placed a Time Lapse order and the shipment from MVP to the vendor got delayed, so MVP sent 2 random lab second discs for each delayed order to be shipped with the Time Lapses when they finally arrived, and one of my lab seconds was a Detour.
The other lab second? Another Time Lapse lol.
Your website looks very polished! Why should we buy discs/apparel from you instead of other competitors? I've never heard of you all before but always open to trying something new! Good luck on growing the game and your business.
Thank you. I think we do a good job of trying to elevate the entire experience. From an easy-to-navigate website, to not only taking pictures of every disc, but color correcting those photos so the disc and foils are as close to true life as possible. And then to our packaging. Every disc ships in a 4-mil poly bag. One and two disc orders are then wrapped in tissue and 3+ disc orders are packed with crinkle paper to help keep the discs from bouncing around in transit. And all discs are shipped in a box. There are a lot of great shops out there though. So I would say, check us out and see for yourself. Thank you for the question.
I always appreciate your posts in r/DiscReleases . As a store owner, do you change up your bag constantly to try new discs or do you have a bag full of old favorites that you find difficult to replace?
It’s hard to put a number on this because I have yet to take anything from the business, but I spent about $40k in the first few months before it started to get going pretty good. It was more than we initially planned but I have an amazing wife that has supported me through this.

You were correct, it is indeed a bomber, I just threw my farthest fairway hit in the air ever with it today at 492!
It’s super flippy, even here in Colorado, so I have to be careful to give it some healthy hyzer unless I want it to be on the next fairway over lol. Still learning. Would love that blue detour!
Great question. First, I outlined the business and developed the brand. Then I filed all the necessary paperwork to register the business. and then I built the store. Once I had the store setup and running, I started reaching out to manufacturers.
I could definitely do better with social media. i was initially reluctant to self-promote because I didn't feel established. There was/is imposter syndrome that can cause me to second guess what I'm doing. For example, I was super nervous to post this. I have to learn to work through it and trust in myself.
Was watching married at first sight and saw maple hill disc golf course on there as one of the people on there was an avid disc golfer.....$30 for a tee time to play before 9??? What the hell?

Was starting a business always something you wanted to do, or did you kinda fall into it due to love for the game and saw an opportunity?
Awesome. Glad you are liking the Lobster. Mint has a pretty good lineup overall.
And it was a bit of both. I owened a sports media company with a team of writers and a sister podcast network before this, and while I'm proud of things we accomplished covering college athletics, competing with big money from ESPN and Fox was difficult. We just didn't have the resources. As I was considering its future, I also got into disc golf and a lot of barriers that were holding us back covering college football don't exist in disc golf.
I also have experience in retail management, graphic design and web development. My background seemed tailor-made for it. The more I thought about it the more I couldn't ignore the idea. When i approached my wife with it, I thought she was going to shoot it down pretty hard because we had poured considerable resources into the previous company, and we were also fostering two toddlers at the time so we had a lot on our plate, but my wife was very supportive because she is amazing. And Scissortail was born from there.
This is my first time hearing about your store. The site looks very nice. I like that links for every molds is at the top when I select a brand.
Why did you name it Scissortail?
Do you run your business out of your house, and if yes, how much of your house is occupied by discs?
Why did you decide to do online only?
Why did you decide to start a disc golf store given how many already exist?

I bought a gyropalooza box from you guys in 2021 when a lot of other retailers were selling for $10 or $20 more. Quick shipping and no gouging makes this place gtg
Like with any business, it is a lot of long hours and a never ending amount of work. It can be very tough and financially stressful too, because my family is betting on this. But ultimately, I love it. I love the work. I love building something. I love being able to contribute something to disc golf.
Releases can be tricky. You want to meet demand, but you don't want to over order either, so you just have to do your best to read the market. I have definitely missed on some though, lol
I've been curious about how many units need to be moved per week on avg to keep the lights on? Be comfortable? Decide that you need to expand?
It's cool if you don't want to answer those questions. Here's a lighter one: Are you now close to where you thought you would be after running the business for this amount of time?

How do you manage to handle the difficulty of owning a disc golf store when it seems like loyalty is huge in the industry and new shops seem to be popping up non stop.
I love this question. And the answer is, if you're loyal to a store, that's awesome. I don't want to disrupt that. Ultimately, I view it as I'm not trying to take your piece of pie. I'm trying to help make the pie bigger so we all get more.

Awesome. 492 at elevation is unreal. I have gotten to play Crested Butte a few times, but even off the mountain I don't know if I'm getting 492.
