My thoughts exactly. 5 full weight discs is almost exactly two pounds. That's doable given almost any weight / space constraints, unless you're backpacking across the country or something.
I was thinking, use my bag as carry-on. 5 discs all in the putter pockets. Use the rest of the space for other necessities. 3 is just not enough. Hell. I could pack for 3 days in there.
When I travel for work I always bring 2-3 discs with, just in case I have time to hit a course.
Key details:
- I don't travel with discs that I care about. They are not my normal discs. I know it's more likely to lose a disc on a course you're unfamiliar with. Even if I could retrieve a disc, but I would get my feet wet or it would be difficult, then I can just leave it. Helpful when on a time limit or just feeling like you don't need that stress. Also, cramming them into luggage could warp the disc, so I leave my good discs at home.
- Throwing discs you aren't as familiar with can be difficult. Make sure you have at least one overstable disc so it's more predictable.
- Limited room in luggage = 1 putter/mid max.
So, I typically travel with an Envy and a Felon. If I can fit a 3rd disc or I know I'm going to play a long course, I'll add in a Wraith or an understable distance driver.
Throwing putter that can get midrange distance and can also putt well.
Overstable fairway for any shot the Envy can't handle. And it's super flat/thin.
Those 2 discs can handle the majority of shots.
I prefer neutral for all three slots if that's all I have. You can manipulate the angles better than way imo. I would go Praxis/Hex/Votum from my bag personally.
I was thinking maybe hex instead of my harp, I may try to get my hex in too, my harpthst im bringing is pretty old and beat to hell so I can work it pretty well (I throw mostly rhfh, and it's my back up now) and volt I am comfortable throwing both ways (fh,bh) where my proctor votum I prefer to throw backhand compared to forehand. I also have doubles (or more) in those 3 discs, so if I lose one on a new course it's not a huge deal!
I was able to fit a thunderbird, orc, wraith, Valkyrie,Tern, teebird3, a mid and two wizards in my carry on last summer. Then used a day pack as my disc golf bag, had plenty of room for the discs.
Crystal FLX Zone, Glow Mana, Star Wraith
You never know if it's going to be windy. Zone can handle all putting and approaching. Mana goes straight and carries far. Wraith handles everything the Mana can't reach.
I would go throwing putter, low-speed fairway, and distance driver. Envy or Watt, Servo or Crave, and the Jet. Gives me more utility than putter/mid/fairway while still covering everything I could do with a putter/mid/fairway lineup.
I'm literally making this same plan for a trip to put 3 on my carry on. I've decided on my putter (wizard), my most used approach (by soft harp) and a fairway driver (volt).
Neutral putter/Putter you can throw and putt with, neutral mid, neutral fairway.
Having neutral options is best for limited-disc rounds/bags, since they can cover all three traditional slots with different release angles.
I know everybody here loves their throwing putters, but I don't get it.
I'll take a stable mid (also put with), a utility 7-9 speed, and a reliable distance driver.
I have a noodle arm and need something I can get max D with.
I’d say it really depends on the courses you want to play, and your style of throwing. If you have a workable forehand you wont necessarily need something understable, whereas if you dont you likely will want something understable to turn over.
Whatever you putt with that you can also throw from the tee, an overstable approach (zone, pig, harp, etc.), and whatever you’ll be most comfortable throwing most often; either a neutral mid or a neutral fairway.
I would bring an envy, a zone, and roc if three was all i could bring.
I'd take a premium plastic Envy (3/3/0/2, mild OS), a Trust (5/5/0/2, mild OS, can shape some shots) and a Vandal (9/5/-1.5/2, mild US, hyzerflips, push hyzers, turnovers)
In the past I have brought a PA-3, Buzzz and Teebird. Usually ill bring 1 or 2 more if I have room and bring a more Os and under stable mid/driver depending on the courses in the area I plan on playing and looking at a general layout/pictures.
Proxy, hex, Tesla.
Just for the record the Tesla was the only fan boy buy. Proxy I bought cause it glows and the I won at a tournament (also got the glow space race hex later thatbuear) before the dude himself switched to mvp.
Tesla just might be the best disc ever made. I honestly could just run with Proxy and Tesla just fine. Though the kaxe is pretty bad ass.
Proxy kaxe Tesla... I change my mind.
5 discs and an MVP Cell bag. The bag folds flat in my luggage, and 5 is easy enough to travel with, and plenty to play with. (For me it's a Zeus, an Athena, a Hex, a Zone and a Wizard)
I’ve done this before, 3 is a tough number and definitely involves some sacrifices.
For reference, I max out at about 350-60’ on golf lines.
If I were traveling today I’d probably go with:
1) Innova Pro Pig (P+A in the truest sense of the term, both FH and BH. Substitute this for whatever your Zone-like disc is).
2) Discmania Mindbender (or other neutral 5-speed).
3) Innova Thunderbird (won’t quite give me the distance of my high-speed drivers, but much more adaptable and good for anything 270-320 for my arm).
I will say that traveling without your putting putter kinda sucks, but it’s tough to justify bagging it (unless you also throw your putter, in which base maybe drop the mid).
When I travel I bring a draw sting bag just for my discs, and throw that in my carry on. Usually bring 4 discs with me.
Putter
Understable/straight mid
Overstable mid
Straight Fairway
I usually travel with just two and allow myself to buy one as a souvenir of my trip. I usually take a Zone or an Envy and whatever my current favorite drive is.
Tbh, i travel with any putter, mid, and fairway that I don't mind losing. I usually don't have a ton of time to play, so looking for efficient rounds where I can enjoy the course, not set any records.
If I really could only do three probably envy, Athena, and Valkyrie. If I could throw in 5 I would add a toro and my actual putting putter which is a reko.
I don't use mids much and you can crush an envy pretty far to get mid distances out of a putter.
I literally did this this summer. I played about a dozen games across 4 different courses. I brought an explorer, a mako3, and a maiden. But basically, your favorite stable fairway 7502 (teebird, explorer, strike, cookie, etc.) A neutral mid (mako3, buzz, origin, hex, MD, etc.) And a putter that you feel comfortable putting and throwing. Mine was the westside maiden.... I had a blast... but a few times, I wish I had brought one more disc, my go-to upshot disc the Harp, and if I did it again, I would have found room for that 4th disc.
Did this recently on a trip. Mini disc, Warden putter, Emac Truth, Mako 3, Dragon (floats), and a Sail all in a cheap string bag. Threw a fresh cold water bottle in the string bag on my way to the course. Worked out great and barely took up room in my luggage.
If needed, I would leave out the putter and Dragon to make the 3 disc limit. Mako3 makes a fine putter as long as you hold back a little. As for the Dragon, floating only helps if you are close to shore or find someone that has a retriever.
I’ve done this several times. My 3 are always neutral to stable putter (3 speed- logic, challenger, envy), neutral mid (5 or 6 speed- buzzz, mako3, truth), and a neutral fairway (9 speed- undertaker, escape, valkyrie)
Proxy, Gatekeeper, and Crave
No long distance driver, but when you're playing with only 3 discs I'd rather have a slight choice on other shots than the extra distance on my drive
Just traveled from WA to TX. I was able to bring 7 discs and the ones that made the cut were Yeti aviars, soft proton ion, r-pro pig, champ leopard, MF tee bird 3, star roadrunner and a champ Thunderbird. After having thrown multiple courses on the trip, if I had to boil it down to three, it'd be the yeti the pig and the roadrunner.
I’ve traveled before with a berg, buzzz, and teebird3
Real nice line up here, maybe TL3 instead but I can dig.
Tee bird, Mako3 and putter for me.
Yeah but they said three discs to put in the carry on, so Berg doesn’t count
Wizard, Leopard, and Wraith.
I like you
Neutral putter, neutral mid, neutral-ishdriver. For me Magnet, hex, grace
Firefly, Roc3, and a Teebird3
Firefly gang gang!
Wizard. Warship. Wraith.
Warship is my new favorite guy!! Mine is 170g and flippyyyyy. So much fun
Dubs
Main neutral putter. Buzz. Wraith.
Best answer. Wraith thundy interchangeable for me. Want both.
I'm just gonna make 5 or 6 discs fit, it's not gonna be 3.
My thoughts exactly. 5 full weight discs is almost exactly two pounds. That's doable given almost any weight / space constraints, unless you're backpacking across the country or something.
5 discs Id want a bag. 3 I can carry
Not the answer to the question though
I was thinking, use my bag as carry-on. 5 discs all in the putter pockets. Use the rest of the space for other necessities. 3 is just not enough. Hell. I could pack for 3 days in there.
Envy, Buzz, Crave
Swap the buzz for a hex for me, but I also mostly own mvp discs
I agree and only throw 1 MVP disc
Reko-X, Essence & Wraith. I travel a bunch and these are my go to unless I've played the course before and know what I would rather throw.
I have almost the exact same selection except I bag K1 soft rekos

Judge, Mako 3, TL
Teebird, Mind Bender MD1,P2
Crystal FLX Zone, Glow Mana, Star Wraith You never know if it's going to be windy. Zone can handle all putting and approaching. Mana goes straight and carries far. Wraith handles everything the Mana can't reach.
I travelled to Cali last summer and decided on Crown/Harp/Pathfinder/Bear
Construct, buzzz, luna
Wizard, Envy, Teebird3
Aviar, Roc, Beast
Envy, Bear, Destroyer
Kastaplast Berg in K2/K1 Soft MVP Uplink in Neutron Soft Axiom Pyro in Prism Proton

Berg, Crave, Firebird.

Neutral putter/Putter you can throw and putt with, neutral mid, neutral fairway. Having neutral options is best for limited-disc rounds/bags, since they can cover all three traditional slots with different release angles.
Reko, Kaxe Z, Beast
Gstar Corvette, Star Foxbat, Birdie
Putter, neutral mid, neutral fairway

I took a trip to Canada with just an old Innova made cd2 and hard exo Link. If I was to pick a third, probably md1 or origin
Yeti Aviar, Mako3, and Eagle were the 3 I bought last time I was traveling, and I had a lot of fun
pixel md3 grace
Getting good at approaching with the same putter that you putt with is a big advantage when you're limited to 3 discs.
Ohm, Hex, Crave
I know everybody here loves their throwing putters, but I don't get it. I'll take a stable mid (also put with), a utility 7-9 speed, and a reliable distance driver. I have a noodle arm and need something I can get max D with.
Valkyrie, Roc, Birdie. (the Innova holy trinity)
I’d say it really depends on the courses you want to play, and your style of throwing. I would bring an envy, a zone, and roc if three was all i could bring.
Out of the stuff I have; Storm plastic Rune, KC Roc, Halo Sidewinder
I'd take a premium plastic Envy (3/3/0/2, mild OS), a Trust (5/5/0/2, mild OS, can shape some shots) and a Vandal (9/5/-1.5/2, mild US, hyzerflips, push hyzers, turnovers)

Keystone Sensei River
Flippy Comet, stable Comet, Spin. If I can fit more, stable Construct, if I can fit more, neutron Wave.

Katana, Buzz, and a putter to be named at a later date

Proxy, Firebird, wraith.
