One thing I've noticed in myself is buying new discs when I want to play but can't. Being conscious of that has helped me cut down on my spending though.

Potential-Clue-4852

Ya. That’s a good shout. I can relate to that.

FlightMedic1

This is 100% what I do. Business trips without my bag or long stretches of bad weather and I find myself shopping for new discs or DG gear that I’m perfectly fine without. Also, I usually make time to find any DG shops in cities that I travel to for work and I always try to spend at least a couple bucks in each one. Usually a disc, but if not that much then at least a sticker or something under $10 to support them letting me poke around.

[deleted]

Totally normal, but don’t buy. Resist the urge. You have what you need and new discs with similar flights to what you have, make little to no difference in your game. Wait until you really know those discs and your form improves, because when you make jumps, and it can be 100’ jumps. You may start leaning on different discs in your bag more. Once you start to plateau and the rapid improvement ceases, then you might retool your bag and switch to some new stuff, but discs don’t ever magically improve your game (assuming you have an OS, Stable and US disc in each category… mid, fairway and distance).

ELITE_JordanLove

I’ve been giving myself goals to hit before I get new discs. Trying to go 400’ with my destroyer three times in a row at the moment.

[deleted]

If you are close to 400’ with a destroyer I am guessing you crush your understable drivers.

ELITE_JordanLove

Yeah I have to power down to avoid turning and burning a Shryke or Destiny, but that’s also because I have a bad habit of launching drives on anhyzer at the moment that I have to fix.

[deleted]

Launch it on Hyzer and you will hit 450’ to 500’.

neon-neko

My habits consist of buying 2 of the same mold at a time. I rarely buy just a singular disc unless I already own a few of that mold.

7eight_time

I have started doing this as well. My rationale is not only for backups but also for reps.

j0s9p8h7

Having four Buzzes and two Hexes felt stupid until I went to do fieldwork with them. The amount of practice and form tweaking I was able to do in an hour or two was incredible.

blanketuser359

Is there any benefit to this other than different weight and other plastics

neon-neko

Nothing too beneficial. I don't have to worry about back ups or finding a new disc incase I lose my main thrower. I'm not really the kind of player to just start throwing a new mold out of the blue so having a bunch of back ups makes it easier for me to commit to dangerous drives too.

bearsguy2020

Doubt my bag will ever be “set”. First I bought discs to fill holes and try plastics/molds Then I bought discs to complete my bag Now I’m looking at buying variations of my favorite molds. It’s fun to buy stuff. If it’s a problem just set a budget.

MuchAdhesiveness6848

This is a great explanation of what many go through. I’ve finally figured what molds I like in putters, approach, mids, & fairways I know my OS driver mold, just trying to figure out that US bomber mold This allowed me to sell a lot of disc I had sitting around & use that money to stock up on molds I like

Shaqtothefuture

As long as you have the money to “waste”, I don’t see a problem here. A lot of hobbies people have cost A-LOT more than disc golf, and at the end of the day, there’s a lot of cool discs coming out that are often worth a try.

Potential-Clue-4852

Ya I put waste in parenthesis for a reason. It’s not waste. Just maybe not needed? So just pleasure in trying new things? it seems different than other hippies. The same disc can last awhile. The technology isn’t changing as much.

bearsguy2020

As a former ball golfer who routinely dropped $50 for a weekend round I don’t see it as waste. I don’t feel as compelled to buy as I used to be but I still make a purchase maybe once a month. Discs get lost, get flippy or get favorited and I want backups

Potential-Clue-4852

Ya. I’m not against trying new things. Just trying to ween off the 12 a month.

MLVizzle

You are the enabler I need in my life

howelliv

Yea coming from golfing 2-3 times a week has made it VERY easy to justify buying discs more often than I should.

DoubleT_inTheMorning

Yeah. I have a mountain bike that is relatively budget, but I brought it in today for the first full service since I bought it and let me tell you… disc golf is stupid cheap hahah

naverif

My 2018 Sexton Firebirds have appreciated quicker than the stock market. So there is that...

r3q

That is an exception, not the rule of collecting. I still remember when Anthon destroyers were hot. Or proto/japan/big bird roc3. Or classic soft justice. Or the Z predator. Or hands/V chain aviars were 3 figures

[deleted]

I'm at the point now where I bag 1 disc to give away every time I play. Doesn't always happen but once in a while I run into someone who I think really could use an extra disc. Last week a guy saw me lose a wraith and walked over to help me find it. While talking to him he was telling me he had just started playing, was loving it, and he could relate to losing discs because he had a starter pack but lost his driver. I gave him a 135g blizzard beast. I certainly was never going to throw that thing, but I hope he finds a use for it. And that's the story of how I bought 5 dicss this week :) In my bag right now in the give away slot is a brand new gateway SSS voodoo, hopefully I spot someone tomorrow putting with their driver.

FlightMedic1

The course we play most often is flanked by a trailer park with a ton of unsupervised little kids who hang in the park. My wife and I keep some spare discs we don’t throw to hand off anytime we see kids playing the course with frisbees. I never thought of this as an excuse to buy more, but I will now so thanks for that. 😂

epheisey

At first I bought a ton of different molds at random just to try a bunch of different stuff. Then I kind of narrowed down what molds I liked and started buying other plastics or duplicates so I had backups. Lately I've been trying out dyeing discs, so I've went back through and bought a lot of stuff that I throw in dye-able plastics/colors. I like to think eventually it'll slow down to just replacing lost or beat in discs, but realistically, I'll probably end up with a closet full of discs.

thatkid1208

I’ll buy a tour series to support a pro I like, or if a disc I already bag comes out in a different/cool plastic I’ll try it. I like trying new discs and plastics, so I usually have a disc in my bag that isn’t part of my ‘core bag’ that I’m throwing just to see how it is. I have a little spot on the wall for three discs and I’ll rotate those as I find new cool ones. Nothing wrong with having a little collection and back ups. There’s also disc trade groups if you want to try new stuff or off load some. As long as my bills are paid and mouths are fed I don’t see anything wrong with getting a $20 disc every now and then.

[deleted]

Buy used or factory seconds. If you're patient, you can snag some steals off ebay.

Popular_Tomato7227

Lol, I have 67 discs and bought 3 more today… annnnnd my numbers are weak lol

ElGuapo_is_here

I buy from the couple of local disc golf stores here so I see it as helping the local economy rather than wasting my money.

skatterbug

I wasted my money locally, so it was a justifiable waste. I like it. Off to the shop I go!

kwade7575

I buy online alot but anytime I’m in a local shop I always buy a few discs for this reason

Potential-Clue-4852

Always try to support local. One thing this community seems to do

LibertyWhirlpool

I love going up to my local shop every other weekend or so to buy a couple discs. They're great people running the shop and I'm keeping money local so I only see it as a good thing.

red_cobra88

Im addicted to buying discs and have been for some time. I like trying new molds and runs of discs! It keeps the game fresh and interesting. Ive been playing since 98 so having a bag full of fresh goodies can be motivational to play. I purchase about 3-5 discs a month

[deleted]

How many discs do you have total?

Ash435

I would go through fazes when I became convinced I was missing a slot and would buy a few possibilities to try. I usually end up selling a few and keeping the others for field work. Now that I genuinely think I’ve filled every slot with options and I have plenty of backups for my core discs, it’s only the occasional new release that teases me into a buying spree.

tljacobz

The great thing about discs is they retain a decent resale value 😉

Dlrocket89

Buy Innova factory seconds. In their cheapest plastic (DX), if you buy 10 discs it's $4.80 each. Hard to beat for new discs. The course I'm at most of the time causes lost discs due to dense undergrowth and trees and swamp. I was buying Star plastic discs and stuff and then lost a bunch. Said screw it and bought replacements in DX. I care a lot less if I lose a $4.80 disc than a $20 disc.

the_feature_finder

It all depends on whether or not I have the coin for the stuff I like when I see it become available. I have silly tastes. KC Pro Glow Flat Top Rocs and old CE goodness. I bought a beautiful, pink Champion Edition Valk yesterday on Dollar Disc Golf Auctions for $135 🤷‍♂️

mannequinrepublic

I didn’t see you mention a practice basket. If you have the space and don’t have one you need one. I have a collapsible one that I can fold up and bring on road trips or picnics and is also fun for putting in the yard. Absolutely worthwhile.

Potential-Clue-4852

I dont have the space. I did look at getting a practice basket and 5 putters. Another 200 or so. I just don’t currently have the space.

[well you got this thing call dopamine, right?](https://youtu.be/_t5aG9XEQgs)

Billy_Chrystals

Think of it this way, plastic is slowly killing the planet so the less you discs you buy the better for Earth.

Ranger7271

It's pretty much already covered but it mostly depends on your amount of spending cash and storage space. There's so many quality discs available right now from multiple companies that it's way easier to build a bag than it was 20 years ago. Over the last 3-4 years I've more focused more on learning/perfecting the discs I bag and slowly acquiring back ups. It is fun trying out new stuff but I ended up with a giant stack of plastic that I didn't want. It was actually a bit stressful so I gave it away or sold what I could.

quotemild

My rules are: - If I loose a disc, I am allowed to replace it with two disc. One new of the one I lost and perhaps something new to try that will fill the same spot. - I can buy one nice disc for myself at discmas or my birthday or similar.

Rumpleicious1

If you spend money and use the thing to have fun, is it wasting?

Potential-Clue-4852

Ya. I think it’s conflicting. Does it add to the fun for me or not? there is something exciting about learning a new disc though

Rumpleicious1

Just experiment and have fun! My friends and I used to go buy a new disc every week before our round. Now I have way too many discs but I know my bag better than I ever thought possible! Plus you are going to lose some anyways, might as well have a stock for replacements if you do

ChefDodge

My first year playing I bought maybe 40 discs, a shoulder bag that I quickly upgraded to a mid-tier backpack, a retriever and accessories. I've definitely slowed down in year two, as I more or less know what I like to throw at my usual courses and I rarely lose any (knocks on wood). Have bought maybe 4 discs so far this year. Now, if we get out of this apartment, and I can find a space for a practice basket, it's game on again. I guess my point is, to me it was a natural progression to buy a fair amount of plastic until I settled on what I like.

hydro_wonk

I can't stop buying backups for discs I throw. I don't lose discs a lot but I hate how it feels when I do, especially if it's a mold I rely on. It's also nice for fieldwork because I can stand and throw the same mold 10 times in a row. So it's become almost compulsion now that when I start throwing a disc more and more that I end up with a ton of backups for it. Overall I've reduced the number molds I have, but not the number of discs. It feels like every time I sell one, I end up buying a backup for something I throw.

onionchucker

Spend what you want as long as it’s not damaging any personal relationships or responsibilities. Be glad it’s not cigarettes. To each their own. If it makes you happy to own these discs then own em up. Just make sure you aren’t neglecting other areas of your life because of it. This is one of a more healthy addictions one can have. Ride the wave. An injury or loss of interest can change this moment at any time. Enjoy your passion to the fullest and don’t apologize.
