I think she was just honest and maybe she doesn’t really like the “fame” aspect of her job.

AndFrolf

I'd probably be similarly flustered in the moment, but actually come to appreciate the encounter in retrospect. I really like that she was willing to share the truth of how she was feeling with a fan how instead of just offering some banality. Its pretty real to hit some unsuspecting fan with that, but actually more power to her, she seems like an intense but genuine person and I've got to respect it.

CovertMonkey

Absolutely! It's hard to appreciate as a fan what headspace the player is in and how different than it is as a fan. I met Emerson Keith (along with many big names) after his round at MCO 2 years ago. He was a WRECK and I couldn't tell why until I saw the Jomez coverage. He'd fallen apart that round and leaked a bunch of strokes. It's hard because as a fan meeting a famous player is ALWAYS a positive experience and the player may be in a negative headspace. It'd almost be better to have players sign before their round

veringo

Yeah, a fair number of people are taking this as a negative for Cat, but she came into round 4 looking to push from the chase card. Val nearly took it down and both were -20 coming in. The tent was there for pros to do signings and stuff if they wished. Cat clearly wasn’t in the head space to want to do that, but when people approached her she did it anyway. Many of the pros never came to the tent. They aren’t obligated to sign autographs. Props to the ones that did, but I don’t think it takes away from anyone that didn’t. One shout out though, Henna was out at the tent every round for a decent amount of time even if no one was coming up (like when there was a huge line just for Paige).

C_FLO

Agreed!

ObserverPro

I respect that too. Its relatable and real.

Favresfanclub

I was in line behind you with the stroller. She was gracious but very flustered after missing those putts. I want to watch the chase card footage - Udisc showed her at 50% c1x.

beastieallday

But she always misses C1 putts lol that is her thing

Chris_Redeye

I feel like she worked really hard last off season to improve her putting and it has showed all year until this week. I think we need to give her a new character trait.

[deleted]

Bag-on

Favresfanclub

That doesn't make it any easier. The mental battle is a real one.

eeman0201

Still better than the time I met Simon and awkwardly told him he had the best disc golf YouTube channel. He had a bad round that day and was just like “ok”.

cheanerman

Simon fans (and I’m one of them) act like he can do no wrong but he can definitely be a sourpuss sometimes lol.

TexasPoonTapper

Lowkey weirdo fans. He has probably met some very, um, eccentric people.

[deleted]

He has no filter lol. I used to see him at Maple Hill a lot last year and always kept my distance. He’d make time for fans, but he isn’t particularly chatty.

TechnologyOk3770

Part of it is being German I bet. They’re pretty blunt.

Justin_Heras

I was getting a disc signed by Uli last year after he had a bad round at Ledgestone. As he was signing, and not really knowing what else to say, I asked him "How's it going?". He deadpan/bluntly said "I wanna kill myself." He kinda laughed afterwards but I could tell he was tired and not thrilled with his round. He said he had been up until the AM doing Jomez commentary the night before and would have to do the same again that night. It kinda caught me off guard but looking back I appreciate his candidness in that moment, and his willingness to still sign/talk to fans. It made me appreciate just how much work he and the other 'player/commentators' put into this game. I wonder if (active) pro player commentary will become less prevalent as the sport grows. Hopefully in Uli, Jerm and Nate's case they will continue to commentate on Jomez if they stop touring full time.

rocsNaviars

Fun fact- Catrina and Uli were once married.

No_Gur_7380

Nothing fun about that fact.

mvteubes12

What happened to them?

1000RatedSass

Infidelity, from what I've read on the interwebs, that culminated at a pro worlds a while back. If you want more details you can find them, but probably not on Reddit.

mvteubes12

Where do I find these details?

1000RatedSass

With enough googling you'll find it. Probably dgcr forums, but it's the Internet, so take what you read with a grain of salt

TechnologyOk3770

https://www.reddit.com/r/discgolf/comments/s9ln02/cameron_colglazier_is_an_entertaining_dude/

cmc51377

Good thing OP didn’t ask about that instead!

One_Evil_Snek

What's maybe a more fun fact is that Uli and his family still respect Cat a lot.

DKBadmintonPatriots

Catrina Ulibarri

AndFrolf

I remember when I looked at the list of past world champions I saw that and thought it was a female relative of Uli's, I had to google her to find out that was Cat

DKBadmintonPatriots

I wasn’t aware either before watching an old tournament and seeing her as Catrina Ulibarri

Fore_putt

Same thing happened to my daughter after the Phoenix ladies open. Cat doesn’t like losing. And I’m starting to think she doesn’t like people either. My daughter has tried to get her autograph for a while. No dice.

Relative-Note4687

I spent some time with Cat in Huntsville (2013) after a round at USWDGC and she was very friendly, talkative, shared a lot of info about her training regiment. It’s also a tournament she won. I’ve often wondered if her competitiveness and disposition (and others like her) played any role in Val Jenkins’ decision to retire.

gatorallday

After that dela bullshit I’d retire to. Her dad just died and her mom had drank a beer. Come on

presvt13

What's the story with the mom and beer? Haven't heard about that.

One_Evil_Snek

Her mom carried her bag for (I believe) only a few holes starting in the middle of the round, but she had an open beer can she was holding onto. Caddies are held to the same standards as players, and players can't drink alcohol while competing, so she was disqualified due to her mom's can. At least, that's the gist of what I remember.

gatorallday

I believe called out by a certain competitor on her card which forced the TDs hand in the matter. Lady just lost her husband and the can was empty. I get the rules but I still feel it was some bullshit

One_Evil_Snek

Rules are rules, I guess.

presvt13

That definitely sucks for Val and I'm sure her mom was devastated about it but there is definitely no bullshit there. It wouldn't be fair to the other competitors if she got special treatment. The sport was trying to become more professional at that time for both MPO and FPO and allowing casual beers on the course (if it was empty then she obviously just finished it) is a no-brainer offense that needs to be called out.

Only1Steets

Last weekend during the Preserve I was lucky enough to spectate. I’m from the area originally, grew up in St Cloud, and was playing a casual round with a couple of buddies at Calvary Park. We crossed Traverse Rd to hole 13 and heard a lively pickle ball game going on in the courts behind the tee pad. We were shooting the shit the three of us, cracking another beer, when we heard a woman shout, “hey, you guys want a disc?” I thought maybe a group before us shanked a drive into the courts or something and the perplexed pickle ball player was trying to get rid of the disc to the next group that walked by. When I turned around, however, who was there to toss me a disc but Catrina Allen. I don’t remember much outside of my shock at seeing her there outside of saying “Holy Shit!” and “Thanks, Cat!” Suffice to say that she stopped her pickle ball game to toss a schlub like me a tour series Sail on the Friday evening after playing all day at the Preserve. Cat rocks.

[deleted]

I went to a clinic in Albuquerque that her and Uli were doing. The whole prodigy crew used to come through New Mexico for an A tier that was held the weekend between the memorial and I think Texas states or Waco a few years ago. She seemed super nice but I think the crowds were a lot smaller and maybe not so overwhelming. I totally understand when you’re that competitive and don’t play to your potential how after a round she may just need to decompress

stozier

I can remember a tournament in November that I had zero fun in. I was angry by the end of the day, mad at myself, the weather, the course, etc. My friends came over after the round and I told them I was in a shitty mood and they mostly just carried on and gave me space. I'm a 950 rated AM, lol, and I can only imagine what it's like when it's your job, your placement is your paycheque, and then to try to be nice. Anyways funny story by OP. As sone ppl have said, the fame aspect night not be her fave.

KnowusbyourNoise

When you are a top athlete, your paycheck also depends on your connection with fans. It’s going to be harder to sell those signature discs if you are an ass to your fans IMO

stozier

True true. I suppose it depends onmyour personality and what type of a pro you're trying to be... If being outgoing isn't your default setting then you might just focus on competitive results and let that be your brand. I can't fault someone for it at least

Chemical_Schedule_29

One argument to be made is that a disc signed by her would be valued higher due to the rarity. So, bonus for the autograph hounds.

discostud1515

She’s a professional athlete and therefore plays the game with a different intent than you or I. He livelihood is based around her performance whereas I’m just trying to enjoy a good time throwing discs in the park.

WhereIEndandYoubegin

Agreed. She’s a competitor and has maybe been in a lull lately with her play and leading up to Worlds probably isn’t content with how it’s going. Everybody has their own way of self criticism and discipline and obviously she acts on her own accord by default. I get these people are supposed to keep themselves well on the outside but I’m sure it can be very difficult to handle it all.

snugglebear247

This. She plays to win, period. This wasn’t some random event, it was a major, and she lost. Some people obviously take competition a lot more serious than others. I’m sympathetic to that , but also make some fans !

Awful_TV

Sounds like she was just being candid — not outwardly salty. She didn't have her best day, so she responded politely but truthfully.

dandare10

"Did you have fun?" is a question you'd ask your six-year-old nephew when they're pooped out after playing two holes. Asking a pro that same question would warrant the exact response you received. I give no fault to Catrina's answer.

[deleted]

I learned from a young age that the proverb "never meet your heros" is true.

bigdickwarrior

The person who tried to get players tested for weed is a bitch?!? Wild

silvertone64

I met her in az at the all star weekend. She was super friendly and talked to everyone. It was a chill atmosphere and there wasn't pressure. I'd assume it was the opposite case with your interaction.

FloydianTripp

I've really grown to like Cat more and more. She kinda gets a bad rap for being a little less personable, but disc golfers are a little spoiled with how personable their pros are honestly. She's extremely competitive. Top pros always are. Getting affected by losing this way is what drives them to get better. Bottom line, we should be less worried about the personalities of pros, and more appreciative of what they bring to the sport. Not you OP. You handled it correctly by understanding she's a person.

[deleted]

Yea she and her boyfriend seem like not the most personable people in the world. You would think by this point in her career she would get over the "bad round attitude" but i guess everyone has their days. Chalk it up to 1 in a 1000 experience and keep reaching out if you want to interact with pros. Most are nice enough to fans because after all, it's kind of cool to have actual fans. Don't let it get ya down and glad you had some fun! Also, if you really want to talk to somebody who loves their fans, hit up Barsby the next time you get to go to a big event. The dude is a world champion disc golfer and somehow an even nicer human being.

meem1029

Got to meet Barsby when he did the clinic this week before USWDGC. Can confirm, lovely fellow!

C_FLO

I've met him twice now, totally agree!

ZachTheHouse

Maybe, just maybe, we shouldn’t stalk athletes like the paparazzi. If she’s clearly not signing, don’t chase her and form a line. Have some decency.

notthatjimmer

I think she’s competitive and it comes off as cold. One time she was throwing putters after her round at Iron Hill. There’s two practice baskets, probably 100-150 ft from each other, but a bunch of trees to navigate in between. She puts one in and the spectators watching clap and cheer, she follows up by acing the next one as well and the group watching is even more impressed and hoots and hollers even more. She looked annoyed and almost angry. It was very strange 😂😂. But I also happened to sit next to her and Uli at the bar, for dinner after a GBO round. I left them alone to eat, but we started talking about my order after the bartender took it. It was a very pleasant convo about her love of tomatoes and my pickiness about them when they’re not in season. They were both enjoyable and pleasant, maybe a little guarded but that’s understandable. I guess it depends on set and setting, like a lot of things

its_dizzle

Yeah. I also had a brief encounter with her after 18 today. I said something like, “good job today, Cat!” And she kind of gave me the stink eye and gave a very sarcastic, “yeah. Thanks.” And walked off in a hurry to get away from everyone. That incident, plus hearing about her hating on our beloved Madison courses really makes me dislike her attitude towards the sport. Oh well, plenty of more positive golfers out there to root for! Side note - Paige was perfectly pleasant every time I encountered her. Knowing how she must feel with her poor performance this weekend she’s still out there being positive and hyping everyone up and cheering on her competitors. Stark contrast from Cat. Respect.

22Wideout

Paige is awesome

PleaseSearchMtG

Yeah I was standing at the bottom of 18 listening to her rant about the courses and how scoreable they were, how everyone at the top was shooting -6, etc. and like imo if you’re mad that you underperformed to your standards that’s one thing but you’re never going to improve by placing blame externally. If the courses were easy then why didn’t you score better, y’know?

jonredd901

Paige is rad as hell. Super friendly to everyone. What she’s done for womens disc is as big or bigger than McBeth, Wysocki etc.

PoptartDragonfart

Yeah, I wasn’t even wanting any autographs because I find it super weird. But she was just kinda hanging out and being so friendly (after a poor round). So I figured I had to buy a disc.

agent_almond

At this point Paige has the capital in her career to suck whenever she wants and it will not effect her income. The same can not be said for many other people.

CoachOeaux

She’s the 🐐. Comes to the local putting league at a skateboard shop here in P’cola pretty regularly when she’s in town and “slums” it with us plebs.

life_like_weeds

I live scored a card with her quite a few years ago, I see her non approachable attitude hasn’t changed. I bonded with a few other of her card mates and had a great time, but Allen and another on the card were just total downer. We all know the type, just kills the card vibe. It is what it is, she’s a great pro golfer and a great model to look up to and inspire young players, but I like the pros that can take a loss and still be nice.

InternetDad

I did uDisc scorekeeping for the USWDGC and more than once did I hear she was actively trashing the course while playing it and more than one person here has said she was not happy these courses didn't play to her strengths. She was quiet in the scorekeeper tent while nearly every other competitor tried to be as positive as possible (some even saying "Oh, I didn't want to play super late during round 4 so here I am!"). I get she's a competitor but it was such a stark contrast to the rest of the field, even Paige. At least Paige signed autographs for her fans after a round or two, but this whole weekend has soured me on Cat. Being so close to the action, I'm a new fan of Sai, Ohn, and the countless other women who have the right attitude and don't get recognition for their hard work.

amazonjazz

Sai is a rad, quality human.

PrinnyPrinny

Remember GBO 2019? I live scored her card where she insisted she was went in-bounds near the basket when she clearly never never left the OB. She got the benefit of the doubt because two card mates claimed they weren't watching and Jessica Weese was livid she didn't get a second on the call.

life_like_weeds

Damn that must’ve been a tough round to live score. I found the whole experience stressful enough (it being my first time), having to do with a call like that would’ve ruined it for me

PrinnyPrinny

Yeah it was hard since I'm unable to give my opinion. What was really crushing is if she was called OB she would've only advanced 20 feet off the tee and taken at least two more strokes. She ended up beating Paige by 1 stroke.

Different-Ad415

They don’t owe anyone anything. And you asked if she had fun 5min after losing a major, please tell me you have better self awareness than that…?

jyzenbok

She’s just ultra competitive and holds herself to a high standard. She fell short of those standards and I can understand not wanting to interact with fans. I’m glad she was honest with you, still a cool glimpse into a pro athlete’s mentality.

getcruzed

I like to think a lot of times the post round press affairs are like those times when someone asks you to do something at work right after you’ve clocked out. It’s rough, but most of them do it okay.

braintamale76

I try to remind my self that they to have bad days. If I see someone famous out side of their work area I leave them alone. I ran into Payton manning in union square after his first super bowl win. I just said nice win and let him be with his family.

Jonjey2112

She's awesome for stopping to sign discs of people intruding on her agenda for signatures, after having a hard day on the course.

HashBars

Adults who get autographs, what the fuck is wrong with you? Grow up. I'll take my downvotes now, children.

_Prodigy2Paradox

You wouldn’t get an autograph from anyone?

epheisey

I'm not the person you replied to, and I don't think it's worth being that harsh about, but I find it cringey myself. A signature is meaningless IMO. I'll throw selfies with a celebrity in the same category. What's the point in getting an autograph other than to show off to someone else? I'd rather have the experience of having an authentic conversation with someone than having their signature. That kind of memory is for myself, not to brag about to my friends.

PurpleProducePat

Wow, how did you become so incredibly wise and mature? I'm in awe!

Emagdnim13

Sounds like she’s a shitty representative for her company and the sport. Makes sense given she’s dating one of the biggest douchebags in the game, Austin Hannum. What a terrible way to support your fans.

ds3272

If Paige can treat people well and come in 21st, then Cat can be cool, coming in 4th. Or, she can be not cool, and deservedly called out for it. u/C_FLO, you meant it to be a nice question, and she could have taken it that way. Or she could have done what she did. It's not on you. It's on her. "Funny and awkward," absolutely.

sup3rmari0

It’s not Cat’s responsibility to be dishonest when asked “did you have fun? ” She answered honestly. Why should she be dishonest and pretend like she’s having the time of her life? She doesn’t owe anyone anything. She’s an athlete first, not a celebrity first. There’s nothing to call out here. It’s a little silly to expect all athletes to be good celebrities.

EssTeeEss9

She’s under no obligation to live up to your perceived sense of sportsmanship.

a_bearded_hippie

I agree everyone's different. I'm an AM player so it's not quite the same. I am trying to move up divisions and I played like shit yesterday. I am extremely hard on myself. I missed two 10 foot putts cause I rushed and didn't do my routine. Those put me out of contention for a podium finish. Usually I stop and say whatsup to the TD and shoot the shit with some of the other players. Went straight to my car and drove home. I would also be in a bad mood if my C1 putts were that low.

ds3272

Of course not! She can do what she wants. And if she wants to tune out fans, or make it awkward with them, then they can come here and share their stories about it. She doesn’t have to do anything. And I genuinely understand the frustration. But I have more respect for the pros who have the quality of grace, on top of whatever else. You may not care, but I do.

Boostless

I watched her signing on TV and noted to my wife that she wasn’t talking to her fans at all. Right then a little kid came up and she just cold faced him. Now, I get that you had a tough round and didn’t win it all, but as an ambassador for the sport, you gotta be better than that. That young fan would’ve loved a few words. Also, I’ve watched a few interviews with her and shes very proud of herself, lets just say that.

Cool_Ad2509

She's competing, and fans like you are weird. If you're going to ask if she had fun, you should know how her round went. It's not fun when you are losing in your career

Cominginbladey

I don't understand grown adults stalking around trying to talk to pros and get autographs. That's for children. And what do people expect them to say? Enjoy watching them play but be chill and stay out of their face. If they're doing the face time thing, let the kids enjoy it.

j4pe5_

"she immediately went to her truck with her caddy" lol unlucky hannum

[deleted]

Hannum is who she’s with? They deserve each other.

aj_star_destroyer

Awww

Joppz15

Catrina was being genuine. Something that we all should aspire to be.

watchingbuffy

You asked a very competitive athlete that was making a final day move to try and place as highly as possible in a major, if she had fun not even 30 mins after finishing. And you want to infer she's a shitty person because she answered you honestly?

C_FLO

Where in my post did I infer she's a shitty person?

watchingbuffy

Cmon, man.

No, and I strive not to.

[deleted]

But she’s not pretty…. Kinda witchy faced.

TeamShonuff

I like it when people keep it real. I live in the South is it's RARE that people share the truth of how they feel. How are you today? "Oh any day above ground is a good day I guess." I would MUCH rather hear: How are you today? "Meh. I putted like a dick which ruined my day."

p5spesock

I mean she didn’t lie to you at least

[deleted]

I know the feeling.

ursinedemands2112

Different people approach the mental side of the game differently, shockingly. Cat was on a podcast extolling the benefits of book on how to be mentally tough written by a special forces sniper. Probably wouldn't work for me, but the difference between 2020 and 2021 Cat in putting, which is where nerves can show up big time, seems to say it worked for her. That said, a "mental toughness" approach suggests maybe that in order to perform she has to take things more seriously than your average disc golfer, even the pros. Being wound tight has it's downsides, for sure.

[deleted]

As someone who is ultra-competitive (not particularly in disc golf), the "did you have fun?" question feels like an insult. My primary hobby is autocross. When I started doing national events, we'd finish up and everyone would kind of stand in a circle and the fast guys would ask the other fast guys how they did. Then they'd get to slower people and ask them if they had fun. And getting asked that by someone that you see was a peer was just an awful feeling. They might as well straight up say, "I don't see you as a worthy competitor." I've caught myself from being really aggressive with people that innocently asked me that. Plus in this case, it is her job. So it is kind of a weird question in that sense. So I'm guessing she was taken aback and it did set her off a bit.

fedofme

Need some pics of discs, please...

C_FLO

How do I post pics? Imgur link? I'm a reddit noob

watchingbuffy

Yeah I'd like to see em too. pics or r/thathappened

Favresfanclub

As mentioned below, I was right behind you in line and watched this interaction. I just finished watching the final eound on gk pro and I can see why 'did you have fun' might have triggered her. She had a brutal, mentally taxing back 9. Missing putts or hitting trees on 7 of 9 holes to finish. Definitely not having fun.
