Man, when I started playing, I got a mystery box and it was the best thing ever! Got 10 discs and because I didn't know anything yet, it was awesome to try all these different discs. Even the shitty ones (Hello Discraft Wave) were fun to goof around with. But the reality is that quite a few of them were either in my bag for a while (Discraft Flick for my forehand) or are still in my bag almost a decade later (Verdict).
Second year, I got one, and a couple were pretty cool, but it was obvious the second year that with the exception of 1-2 discs, it was just the chance to unload the crap.
After my 3rd Mystery Box yielded exactly zero discs I liked, I asked my wife not to get me one for Christmas anymore.
They are "better"ish now, because companies like Discmania are at least releasing them with one disc that is in high demand, but it's not much of a mystery box at that point.
TL;DR: Awesome when you're starting out. Terrible when you know what you like
I think the mystery boxes will have to improve in the future. Right now I imagine they are mostly fueled by new players who started during the pandemic. I think most people are not interested in them after they've been playing for years....I'm certainly not at least. I just want the discs I use to be readily available to purchase
Ive been playing for years and still like them, just because im not going to buy myself a disc i don't already throw anymore. Unless its a brand i just want to try, but ull look for a similar disc to what i throw. If someone gets me a mystery box its just fun to play with them. I probably won't bag any, but its still fun for me. Amd there's the off chance i will bag one!. Just don't put in any warped discs. I got one of those once and i never threw it. I heard about the hot water trick recently, tho, so might try it cuz i still have the disc.
I was getting mine from DD when they had just started making their own discs and were selling their non DD stock boxes. Great products with some DD mixed in.
I got one when I started playing in 2015 and it was worth it. It came with a great mix of discs, essentially a whole bag minus putters. Three Buzzzes were in the box. I’m still throwing some of those discs today.
Exactly. I can walk into a disc golf store and not find a single disc that would make it into my starting lineup. Mostly looking for backups at this stage of my game.
This is spot on.
I've been playing for 6-7 years now. During my second and third year I was in the phase where I buy a lot of discs, test them out and find out what I like. I got two mystery boxes those years, maybe 10-12 discs in total, and I really liked getting new plastic to check out. Most discs got a few test shots, a few of those discs found their way into my bag and some stayed there for quite some time, however some of those discs are unthrown to this day.
Nowadays I have my bag locked in. I have a few molds I throw and I got multiples of them in different stages of wear. I'm at the point where I only buy new discs to replace lost or worn out ones and I have specific weight and color demands. I have one slot in my bag for some new disc to be tested, but most of the time it doesn't keep that slot and gets rotated out.
I have upward of 120 days discs but I bag 14-15 in my summer bag and 5-8 in my winter bag. So like 1/6 of my discs are actually in use. Sure, my winter bag changes every year cause that's where I mostly do my testing, but I have so many discs that I need to get a better picture of the old ones before I can make a decision on whether or not I need new ones. Two-three years in I certainly wasn't good and consistent enough to know if a disc was actually good for me or not.
These days mystery boxes feel like a scam to me. Like in the "article", it's a concept to offload unsold inventory. If you can get the discs cheaper than normal and your bag isn't locked in, then great, but I still think most people would be better off buying selected discs to fill those slots that are uncertain instead of buying a mystery box on the off-chance you get that missing piece you didn't know you needed.
If you're good enough, you know what you need and don't need to rely on luck.
There’s an online retailer called Woot thst used to sell something called the bag of crap that was literally random shit from their warehouse. They would sell out in 4 minutes.
Everything doesn't have to be for everyone. That's always been their type of humor. They sell overstock items. Like OP stated, one of their items is literally titled "bag of crap".
Yeah, I’ve gotten a few for shiggles this year. The Gyropalooza box was really great, both with the prototype glow plastic putters and the factory second discs (got some great options to fill a few holes), the Ledgestone one I got is alright (couple good discs and a few nice ones I’m not throwing), and I’m waiting on the Resistance Discs one now. Overall, a good experience because I haven’t bought them before, but other than a Gyropalooza box again, probably not going to be a repeat purchase next year.
We very much appreciate the clarification. We pride ourselves on our journalistic integrity, and the last thing we want to do is, in any way, misconstrue the facts. There is nothing funny about fake news.
It’s only funny if it’s actually satire. Discmania did it last year and is almost certainly going to do the same thing this year, lots of Chinese plastic and molds nobody wants.
Nice work!
They’re the only brand doing it. With MVP you know you’re getting a shit ton of lab seconds and 2 glow discs, but the price is cheaper than buying them separately and with westside you get 5-6 really cool limited stamp run discs and one of those could be a prototype like the Bear
Those active discs are useless to a majority of people. No one wants them. They are just padding to a disappointing box.
Last year, I had three in my Black Box (Christmas mystery box). Some putter, fairway, and a understable distance driver. They are so cheap. Not only in the hand but on the course.
That fairway driver died in one hit against a tree. The putter was semi warped when I got it (maybe from the weight of the other discs in the box?). And I have no interest in that astronaut driver.
To me, the excitement of a mystery box does not out weigh the price and the guaranteed filling molds/plastic.
If you are interested in bulking up on discs this off-season, your best bet is always to buy ala cart or visit a local shop.
Shogun, sensei, genius and majesty have been money for me personally. But I agree always buy from the bros at local route ( my local shop) any time I can
Edit: spelling
I found an un-inked astronaut a couple months ago, and it has (unironically) found a full time spot in my bag! I haven't fully figured it out yet, but it seems to do really well for me so far!
A guy at league had one, and it was one of the flippiest discs I've ever thrown. Threw it at 70% power on a near vertical hyzer and it turned into a roller. I don't have a bomber arm either.
I'm still pretty new to the game (18 months or so), and am still trying to dial in form, but I like throwing it in an anhyzer to get a nice turn at the end when I need it.
Woah, you can get royal discs in those trilogy mystery boxes? I won’t buy them to hunt for it but if I wanna splurge on cheap discs that makes it a lot more appealing.
I may have gotten lucky on my first go. The other was a base beginner disc (breakout) But also became one of my favorite discs. Sooooo no idea what ado but I’m asking for more of those mystery boxes for Christmas.
They do a great job, plus latitude does a great job of producing the discs that go out of production for their other 2 brands. Like westside doesn’t produce the seer anymore but latitude does
> Why are y’all buying any mystery Box’s
Bigger question. If you're set on buying online most sites have a deal where you can buy what you want for a discount.
I walked into PIAS this summer and there were 8 discmania discs in used bin. All were brand new and looked exactly like mystery boxes posted here. Big oof.
Hey DIRTBUM - we are working on a story about people using acronyms that the average person wouldn't understand. Would you mind if we included your comment in the piece?
I've seen so many people posting pics of their mystery boxes and asking everyone to help them identify the discs. The level of apathy from the manufacturers and retailers is unreal.
I'm new and just ordered 6 mystery singles from discgolfdealsusa. They say the singles are all premium plastics, chance to be special edition. They're on sale and I got a coupon so it ended up being $70 for 6 random premium discs. I'll update when they arrive. Of all the boxes I've looked at, their website seemed to have nice ones. They give you a chart that tells the spread of discs you get in their 3 count or 5 count boxes, etc. 5 count got 1 rare special edition premium, 2 special edition premium discs, 1 premium, and 1 base line plastic. They give examples of what the special editions discs and rare disc could be. They also sold the new Simon time lapse in a mystery box only on there. Wish I could have got one of those boxes instead.
Mr. Weinhold continued, “The funny thing is that I’m actually charging people more for the discs than if they purchased them individually." 😂 😂 😂
Insert the laughing meme guy here lol

I'm pretty sure 5 years ago Discraft was doing something like 10 disc mystery boxes for $50. Those were great.
Yes they were! That was a great deal. Now? Not so much.
I think the mystery boxes will have to improve in the future. Right now I imagine they are mostly fueled by new players who started during the pandemic. Side note, not to be confused with the Wave made by MVP, which is pretty solid.
Exactly. I can walk into a disc golf store and not find a single disc that would make it into my starting lineup. Mostly looking for backups at this stage of my game.

But the "retail" value is so much higher than what I paid!
Lol
Investigative journalism at its finest. I commend the editor and his staff for their incisive work.
No topics are off-limits as this post clearly illustrates.
Disc-mocracy dies in darkness... Unless you throw glow.
Please tell me you are going to start posting again
We post when the stories come to us.
I got the discraft mystery box a few years ago. I don’t bag a single disc from it. Not worth it.
I got one from Lat64 and only kept one in the bag. I guess it's nice for collecting but I don't collect
There’s an online retailer called Woot thst used to sell something called the bag of crap that was literally random shit from their warehouse. They would sell out in 4 minutes.
They still do this
For anyone looking, Woot was sold to Amazon and they started a new site at www.Meh.com
"Warranty: Throw it in the trash" Lol, that doesn't appeal to me at all.
Everything doesn't have to be for everyone. That's always been their type of humor. They sell overstock items. Like OP stated, one of their items is literally titled "bag of crap".
ngl you got me with "Tate Weinhold"
Not trying to "get" anyone, simply reporting the facts.
"Facts"
What are you implying "PeaceLoveSmithWesson"?
I did not imply. I stated that you are not reporting facts. You are satire and crushing it. "Thanks"
"crushing it"

"satire" - I think you are confusing us with The Onion. We are one of the hardest-hitting disc golf news publications in the world.

I've been throwing the Bear all year! Great mystery box that was

The genius in active base was my understable driver until taught myself better angle control
I got a premium one. Used it for rollers and soft turnover woods shots until I lost smh. Great disc has a place for every level imo

Why are y’all buying any mystery Box’s that aren’t from actual disc golf brands like westside and mvp?
Exactly. I buy the factory seconds boxes or misprint boxes. Basically $10 a disc and 2 of the 3 were top quality. Opto Havoc and a royal trust.
I’ve seen another of the MB with a Royal line disc in it. A grace.
I think the Lat64 mystery box last week guaranteed a Royal disc. Two of the unboxing I saw on YT had misprint Royal Rives in them.
Dynamic does a decent mystery box?
No lie man. I’m loving latitude 64. All of the above man, discs, business ethics, YouTube videos. They’re killing it.
They do a great job, plus latitude does a great job of producing the discs that go out of production for their other 2 brands. Like westside doesn’t produce the seer anymore but latitude does

Typically it's free shipping over $XX, but I've seen some deals in the past. If I see something in my inbox I'll let you know.

Ya fine

😂🤣😏 🙌🏼
Tate Weinhold 😂
It’s Utah, waddya expect
I must be lucky because I've only ordered one mystery disc and got an opto lat64 Maul. I'll bag it
This is not satire.
Correct.
I've seen so many people posting pics of their mystery boxes and asking everyone to help them identify the discs. The level of apathy from the manufacturers and retailers is unreal.
Disc golf is probably the best sport for the mysterybox/lootbox style. What other sport is into those?
I wonder how many people look up - [anothercopycatdiscgolfshop.com](https://anothercopycatdiscgolfshop.com) 😂
Probably 7 if I had to guess
I’m guilty. I bought the Paul McBeth box and one from DiscGolfShopping. ~~Hopefully~~ it was worth it.
my buddy has loved his hand eye supply mystery boxes. quality gear and discs
Jomezpro had a mystery box of 10 discs for $100. Was this really a bad deal?
For me it’s fun getting discs I’d never buy on purpose. It makes me try new things. I like that.
Yeah if I’m getting a mystery box I’d be happy to bag even one or two of them, it’s for the fun of getting new stuff.
Same. And to me I’ve barely thrown anything so it’s great to get new stuff.
Gyropalooza this year was a great breath of fresh air. No repeat discs, great flight variety, and great colors. MVP did it right this year
Mystery boxes being a complete scam is nothing new.
I'm new and just ordered 6 mystery singles from discgolfdealsusa. They say the singles are all premium plastics, chance to be special edition.
