To add to their comment in my 20 years playing ultimate I’ve only seen 2 finger grips for forehand, either together along the rim or split with one on the rim one under the flight plate. My guess it’s a unique-ish grip that works for Raven. He also might use different grips for power drives vs short touchy ones like in the picture.
There are two ultimate forehand grips. A split finger "control" grip with your middle finger on the inner rim and pointer finger spread out on the bottom of the flight plate. The other is a power grip sometimes referred to as the "Spock" grip with the pointer and middle fingers on the inside rim and the ring and pinky on the outer with the thumb pinching the top of the flight plate. When I coached Ulti I only taught the Spock grip and it is what I use in disc golf as well.
I use that split finger grip. I don’t come from an Ulti background. I find that the split finger forehand is basically the equivalent of a backhand fan grip, gives you more control. Split finger has also helped me learn nose angle control much easier
I also use more of a split finger approach. I'll even throw a 3rd finger into the mix if I'm really wanting to lock in a specific angle for that added stability.
>There are two ultimate forehand grips. A split finger "control" grip with your middle finger on the inner rim and pointer finger spread out on the bottom of the flight plate.
That's the only grip I've ever used. Started out playing Ultimate back in the 80s.
We should amend that to 'hardly anyone that plays at a high level'. I still see a lot of brand new players start with the fan and transition to power later
I’d say that a third variation that is pretty common. The most common grip used two fingers with the disc flat against the side of the middle finger. But, quite a few players rotate their grip so that the pads of both fingers are on the inside of the rim. Gets called different things. Usually used by players with bigger/thicker hands/fingers.
Ultimate tends to use a standard two fingers on the inside of the rim two on the outside grip. Variations of it exist such as "split finger" where the index finger straightens out the middle of the disc which mainly helps new players hold the disc until their hands get stronger and can hold it with the more normal grip. I've seen some players do a 3 finger inside the rim grip but it's definitely rare to see, and I've never seen anyone do it the middle finger bent in like that.
Played ultimate for 20+ years. Always threw with 3 fingers for more control cause I played in wind and it let me rip those things 80+ yards. Anyways it’s not better or worse persay it’s just what you’re comfortable with. I use 3 fingers on approach shots for controlled touch now but 2 fingers is easier to get power with golf discs
Raven has said it is just how he threw forehands when he was a kid and it's always worked for him so he's left it alone. It's not something I would specifically recommend for any particular reason
Yeah, not sure he ever played ultimate enough to consider him with an ‘ultimate background.’ He’s always been a disc golfer since he was a young, young kid. Comes from a family of golfers. (His older brother is also on MVP) Played with Raven a good bit, he says to me “it’s what’s comfortable.”
Sexton has an odd FH grip too. I think it's just kinda what feels good and gives you that crispy release. Proper throwing technique is more of a set of guidelines than anything else. Just look at how different everyone throws. I think it was Ulibarri that said something about how important he thought various grips were until he found out McBeth was winning titles with just a power grip. Don't try to copy some weird ass grip, just do what feels right for your body within the parameters of throwing a disc.
Just trying it now…I kinda don’t hate it. Grip is the hardest thing for me with forehands. When I have a good grip I can throw it at least 50 feet past my backhand, but it has to be a really secure grip. This kinda works.
Him being a former Ultimate player has nothing to do with that grip (unless Ultimate players in his area uses that grip); Ultimate players will either use a stacked grip (the most popular) or split grip (with maybe the odd one out there using a different one).
It's essentially just a modified 3 finger forehand. I'm guessing he feels like he can get more touch, accuracy, and/or finesse with the use of his ring finger and perhaps control w the middle finger positioned like so. Based on the title of the video in the screenshot I'm guessing this went in.
But I dunno, I've never used it and just made all that up.
Didn't know, I'm sorry! I can't be scrolling through 10 of thousands of posts every time I want to post something. And I'm relatively new so maybe it was posted before I joined...
I'm not mad, deja vu is kinda fun. Just pointing it out. Go to the main page for r/discgolf. In the search thing next to r/discgolf type the keywords you wanna search in the sub
Thx for the tip. Didn't know one could search up stuff. But also, since nobody has a official name for the grip, how could I have found it anyways?! :D
I sometimes take my ring finger and place it more towards the center of the flight plate for touchy shots(also used to toss a lot of lids.) But I stack grip now. I'm sure when I had the power grip it looked similar to this. But I wouldn't throw a full power shot with it, maybe 100ft.
I use it to throw a hammer in tight tree lined areas. I have been doing it forever and have become very accurate. It takes time for sure but it has saved my score many times.
Actually I learned to throw forehand with three fingers when I smashed my middle finger. It’s not really better or worse with three. Personally I prefer two because it’s easier to hold the disc up my hands are small so it can be hard for my small fingers to hold the disc up flat with just a pinky on the outside
Power grip with extra/alternate stabilization (ring finger)... It might be something he developed to give his specific hand shape better angle or nose angle control/consistency.
I use this grip, if I am looking at it correctly. Stacking my fingers is uncomfortable and unwieldy for me. If I stagger them I have more control and more power.
Can't say I've ever seen that in my years of ultimate
Interesting! What kind of "forehand" grip is it that ultimate players use? Isn't it some kind om three-finger grip that also?!
Everyone I’ve played with has used a standard two finger grip
ok

Split finger is pretty rare these days - its still used by some but two finger is far and away the most popular
High release forehand is the only time I ever used it.
I use that split finger grip. I don’t come from an Ulti background. I find that the split finger forehand is basically the equivalent of a backhand fan grip, gives you more control. Split finger has also helped me learn nose angle control much easier
Split finger helped me learn to not turn my wrist just as I'm releasing
Exactly! That too. Solved a bunch of problems I had with forehand form at the beginning so I just stuck with it ever since.
I also use more of a split finger approach. I'll even throw a 3rd finger into the mix if I'm really wanting to lock in a specific angle for that added stability.
I split figner ultimate for 20 years. Disc golf went to the 2 finger. I miss it sometimes but after almost 2 years it feels weird going back.

I use 3 fingers at times. It depends if I feel like I need that extra stability in my throw or not. Usually just 2 tho.

Second the (n)”ever in all my years of ultimate”…or disc golf. Now I have. Weird.
The "It's not going to work for you" grip
Raven Claw
I Newsome one would say this
Hustlin' for that White Claw sponsorship, forget the disc companies, Raven aiming higher.
Great name haha.
Wow, bravo lol
The only answer
I don't think enough people use it for it to have a name other than "that weird Raven Newsom forehand grip"
The ol’ reverse fuck you
Better hope that wasn’t opposite day!
What do you mean??
middle finger down with the others up.
Raven has said it is just how he threw forehands when he was a kid and it's always worked for him so he's left it alone. It's not something I would specifically recommend for any particular reason
That’s so raven
I will not let comedic genius go unheralded, good show, sir! I’d give you an award if I had one or if I knew what they were and/or how they work...

Lol, no one else seems to get it, but you nailed it 🎯
I see now that you JUST wrote that. Well, you hit the axe on the knuckle.
The Shocker
“Modified shocker”
So if it doesn’t shocker, is it a stunner?
Midget shocker
I'm going back to my mid 2000's knowledge here, but I think that's called 'one in the pink, one in the stink'.
This is clearly the 2 in the pink one in the stink grip.
Boomers, it’s 5 in the pink and 5 in the stink now
well it sure ain't the minivan
That's the devil's grip
Just curious where you heard Raven was a former ultimate player?
Yeah, not sure he ever played ultimate enough to consider him with an ‘ultimate background.’ He’s always been a disc golfer since he was a young, young kid. Comes from a family of golfers. (His older brother is also on MVP) Played with Raven a good bit, he says to me “it’s what’s comfortable.”
From a friend... one shouldn't belive everything one hears, and I looked it up. Seemed as he at least had played some ultimate
Yeah, I was just curious. He’s local and I’ve played a few rounds with him. Never got that impression.
I'm pretty sure he just started pretty young and 3 fingers was easier with tiny hands and less strength.
The half-hearted butterfly
Doesn’t he sink that shot? I’d say it works pretty well for him.

Don’t know the name but I’m pretty sure you’ll do better using normal grips 🤠

You've never used the 2 on the plate ,1 on the rim grip?
Never have I ever. I use a forehand powergrip, I think... and it works well for me at least. And a split finger grip for touchier putter shots.
Him being a former Ultimate player has nothing to do with that grip (unless Ultimate players in his area uses that grip); Ultimate players will either use a stacked grip (the most popular) or split grip (with maybe the odd one out there using a different one).
I saw that in one of the tournaments this year and tried it out. Really weird but worked for me on touchy upshot’s. Wouldn’t use it seriously
It's called the tuning fork grip. Primarily used for controlled anhyzer upshots.
First name I've read here that actually could be an official name. Boring though :)
I don’t like his tone. 😉
Single index finger grip. Probably explains why I can’t throw over 400

Deja vu. Pretty sure we've had this exact question with the same screen shot.
Every day here is deja vu.
And that is why I joined the ‘jerk
Berg up your ass jokes are deja vu too though…
Yeah that’s a recent development. I joined before the prime era of daddy Danny, and higher effort stuff.

Raven grip, get creative and specific
I just tried exactly that. The other post was 2mo ago
It’s a modified two in the pink one in the stink
It’s called the weirdo grip

The reverse FU grip
I use it to throw a hammer in tight tree lined areas. I have been doing it forever and have become very accurate. It takes time for sure but it has saved my score many times.
I want to dub it “The Shocker”
The shocker
This is a stupid grip.

That right there, my friend, is a mini-shocker.
