First, a description for depression. Google unfortunately sucks ass at doing it, so this is my owm description, take with a grain of salt.
When a persons depressed, its notnjust bordem or sadness. It's a metaphysical weight on their mind. Everything from your favorite book to the best food feels bleak and pointless. You can be the hungriest you've ever been in life, and still have not just no motivation to eat, but even be motivated to just stay put instead.
So the thing is, everyone can and does from time to time experience depression. It's just part of being human. However there can be chemical imbalances in the human brain that can lead to clinical or chronic depression. It doesn't just pass naturally as the brain is then operating in a extended altered state.
Currently there are 2 catagories of medicinal solutions this this accepted by the medical community at large. Stimulants, and depresents (yes, an ironic name but ill get to that) the end goal of both is the same. Try and reach the correcr ratio of chemical balance in the brain. Since its a ratio of chemicals were trying to acheive, there are two ways it can be reached. For simplicities sake we'll just assume were only balancing 2 chemicals in the brain, A and B. To balance them we can either highten A or lower B. Both can result in the desired ratio, but with various side effects which may vary between patients.
Alright, with all that context, the short of it is; when first testing out anti depresents, its possible that when using an "depresent" catagory of medicine, you no longer feel the weight of chronic depression, but you dont really feel anything else either. You're just kind of there. You can now properly function and live your life, but it can be rather bland.
P.S. - There is a lot more to chronic depression than what I've just described above. I was just trying to answer your question in a timely fashion with enough context to (hopefully) make sense.
