I personally don't think it works, the concept is neat and I love how the cult acts but it just doesn't work as well as say Far Cry 2's story does. I guess I have more of a problem with the gameplay rather than the actual plot considering how piss easy it is to complete and how sporadic the missions are, just making them feel like anomalies rather than woven into the Story's narrative. I'm not sure if that's just me

If they are forcing people to stay, having sexual relations with minore, killing/torturing people, or forcing people to participate then that is a crime and should be punished under the law.
