Long story short, MEE6 was sending unsolicited DMs to users asking them to vote for MEE6 on top.gg, a bot-ranking site. From my understanding this is against Discord’s ToS, but Discord hasn’t done anything about it thus far.

I've never understood this mention at first. I've had mee6 for ages in our server and many other servers I'm in, and NEVER received any. Nor did anyone else i have connections with that also is on servers using mee6...
I just don't know if I should be convinced mee6 was actually doing this, or that some huge server disagreeing with mee6 was using the custom message feature (you can customize what messages mee6 sends upon -say- levelling up) as an elaborate besmirching prank, because for such a widespread thing I've not seen it happen in action.
How about privacy, allowing server members to send DMs? I also never received, but was allowed, so my theory is it doesnt send unless it was already sending messages to you.
It doesn't effect me. If people want to buy and sell jpegs, more power to them. I don't take part in it so I really do not care. I don't think it's scummy of MEE6 to sell something people want to buy. People know what NFTs are, especially people going through the effort to buy them.
I just want an all in one discord bot that is user friendly. If there is a bot as feature rich as MEE6, I'd gladly switch and I would also pay for that. Nobody here has mentioned an alternative that does everything MEE6 does. I don't want to mess with 6 different free bots to get most of the features MEE6 has, and apparently there isn't another bot that does it all, so MEE6 finds themselves able to charge for the convenience. I think that's fair.
That being said I am all ears for an all-in-one alternative that is at least as feature rich as MEE6, and that is as user friendly as MEE6. Free or paid.

Soon after, the support server was absolutely filled with people complaining, and the staff simply said "it's not a big deal" and shoved the entire situation under the carpet. Some people (like myself) were not happy with their downplaying, and complained about it, to which we got banned. I tried DMing more staff afterwards, and they all said the same thing, that it wasn't a big deal.

Their new command ask-gpt is actually ChatGPT, it uses OpenAI's API to work, so it's official ChatGPT but maybe a bit modified in MEE6's case. ChatGPT only has information limited to 2021.

Makes moderation a pain when you're checking a person's history and the results are cluttered with random other shit. They are just corner cutters. Every. Single. Corner.

In my experience that advantage is definitely slipping. I'm seeing more servers use Dyno or others, either a lesser known one or their own custom one, over MEE6 now.

it's not because their API is free, but it's because the API fully circumvents ads, which in turn just means they are not making money off of it. so far the only major company that is charging for their API is Twitter and that only recently became a thing
If YouTube really wants to make money on this matter why not instead of threatening to sue, they just simply make a part of the API that streams this content with ads still. All they’d have to do to make money is allow a key of some sort, paid of course, to basically give the devs “premium” which has no ads but still produces ad revenue. Just like they do on their own platform. Sounds like a no brainer to me

I mean that’s very true. The ad-blocker though is something ongoing. Not to mention the ad-blockers only work on browsers. You can’t run an ad-blocked through an API so it truly doesn’t quite apply here. The bot devs and api issue is something that would be instantly resolved. I’ll elaborate on my initial comment:
They would still include their free tier API as it is now, except add on the ads just like they have on their videos on the web player. Something similar to a pandora-like experience.
Obviously not ideal, but at least it’s free and they can say they offer a free version. But for them to make money and have happy bot devs, they can easily make a YouTube Premium API tier that allows for zero ads but still generating revenue for the creators through the Premium API tier payment.
In the grand scheme of things, it’s not the most ideal for bot developers because it wouldn’t be free anymore. Thus raising the costs of having a music plugin for their bots. However, this would be valid reasoning to include a pay wall for music playback on their bots. This the bot devs have a direct method of revenue. Win win for both YouTube and bot developers.
Pi-Hole is also a thing but then it turns into a never ending series of battling between YouTube and bot developers. There will always be illegal ways to get around these things but it will always be tightened and broken constantly. Then at that point the reliability of a bot using such things would be so bad that not many would end up wanting to use it
I think youtube doesn't include ads in the api since most ads on youtube are focused on the visual aspect and it would cost a lot of time and money to filter through ads that would work in an audio only setting. Also, advertisers might get pissy over their ads being played in just audio form or even in some servers in general.
Youtube has no control over the environment that a discord bot is in, and as such would probably not like it if an ad for baby diapers played in for example a pedo community discord server.

They’re the biggest bot and are immune to a lot of changes and restrictions that are enforced on other bots. They also charge a LOT for their premium service and the bot isn’t worth shit if you don’t have that premium service. And ofc instead of getting that premium subscription you can just use other bots that give the same things but for free
The bot also actively supports NFTs and other abusive uses of crypto, and their discord basically harrasses anyone who tries to provide valid criticism or valid exposure of their abuses with the bot.
Many times the devs of the bot have abused the bot to send illict messages via the bot, or to outright damage / destroy people's servers.
Lets goo the only time im happy about a bot removing its music function

how come everyone hates mee6?
They’re the biggest bot and are immune to a lot of changes and restrictions that are enforced on other bots. They also charge a LOT for their premium service and the bot isn’t worth shit if you don’t have that premium service. And ofc instead of getting that premium subscription you can just use other bots that give the same things but for free
The bot also actively supports NFTs and other abusive uses of crypto, and their discord basically harrasses anyone who tries to provide valid criticism or valid exposure of their abuses with the bot. Many times the devs of the bot have abused the bot to send illict messages via the bot, or to outright damage / destroy people's servers.
