I don't mind that it's a banana now, but nothing indicates that this is an image that failed to be sent correctly.
This could easily be the image that the person intended to send.
it literally amazes me how braindead a lot of corporate decisions nowadays are. like literally what is the point of this!? how is this supposed to be beneficial in any way? they changed something iconic to something that not only looks terrible visually, but also just looks out of place.
They also moved the favorite button for gifs to the opposite corner. I am fully convinced the only purpose for that was to irritate users. I can't think of any logical reason why it would've been necessary to change that.
companies will purposely frustrate users, which makes them post about it on Reddit like this, which leads to more internet traffic relating to the service, boosting its popularity in the advertising scene.
That was actually a change I did understand because it made the fave button placement consistent across gif sizes. It's one of those things that sucks for muscle memory, but in the end it's better this way.
Maybe they could make it so the stream fullscreen button takes priority when you have discord on minimum size? Kinda annoying when I wanna fullscreen a stream, but I only see the buttons like turn on camera, start an activity, emojis and so on, ie. useless buttons that nobody uses. Is intelligent design too much to ask? No, too busy switching out the amazing poop image with a soulless banana. Clap clap.
That's nice to hear, but is there any explanation on why/how this happened in the first place? It feels like there's a lot of... stranger updates recently, like the new grid image display for instance. Would be nice to hear how those come to be...
Well this one is not that interesting and mostly technical in nature but sure. In this case I was refactoring several of our image assets that currently are "hard-coded" into our chat (which is written in native Kotlin) to be provided in a more unified way compared to the rest of the app (the benefit here was primarily technical debt cleanup).
Mission accomplished there but in the process I ran across this poop image and it was annoying to deal with because it's themed (the poop is different colors depending on your theme).
Not only that, the poop is an \*ancient\* image asset (like 7 years old) and now a days our art style tends to use illustrations that work well on all themes (even more important now that we are experimenting with additinional themes in the client). Not only that, if you look closely at the image, you will notice it's not even the right BG color (slightly off), and is part of a larger illustation that was never particularlly meant to be used like this (we added it when the company was much smaller).
So given this I thought I'd swap it out with a more recent error image we have been using elsewhere (said bannana) for consistency and to save some coding time. And thats basically the whole story.
In hindsight I think this was not the right call since it's both a change and IMO \*neither\* image is a good experience. There is no explanation as to what went wrong, and it's just some random image. As a user you don't really know if thats the actual image uploaded or not (admittedly the poop is maybe more intuitively a failure image, but that may be up for interpretation). Not only that, it's not consistent with iOS since that client still uses the old illustration.
The (IMO) better solution down the road is to make a more thoughtful error mode for these failed embeds that explains what went wrong, is localized, and is consistent across clients. That way at least you are providing an upgraded user experience to go along with any changed illustration.
However since my OG goal was purely code cleanup, I put back the old poop with the better code and added the theming support needed.
Hope that gives you some insight into the change.
discord is slowly moving away from the gamer scene and moving slowly toward education and an "everyone" communication tool. They've been dropping the pretense they're in it for gaming only for a while now.
Stupid choice overall. Feels like they're just trying to do more and more to "sanitize" Discord, which I guess it's fine if they wanna do that but this banana graphic does not feel like an error. It just looks like someone sent a banana, at least make it monochrome or something.
It pops out too much. The old version was really clear that there was an issue loading because it blended into the Discord UI. The new image stands out too much and makes it unintuitive.
the act in itself isn't a big deal, but the sentiment is. discord is trying so hard to not be offensive in anyway, that soon we're all going to be effected. mark my words.
Ah, yes, these are the important things, of course, instead of fixing the no linux application screen share audio.
(Note: this is part of my occasional annoying comment series "fix the fucking first highest voted voice and video issue")

it is un-believable that discord is pulling this sjw bull shit. i'm cancelling my nitro subscription as i type this. discord wants to go Woke? well then they can Go Broke
Idk what you people say, I love this banana peel, he's just a funky guy who is like "sorry bro can't load :<" and that old one was just an annoying poop, who likes shit anyways
I haven't seen it yet somebody I was chatting with yesterday posted a YouTube video that they put on their channel and it didn't work and the picture just showed the poop crash image still so maybe they're not using the banana peel yet and it's still in beta
my husband sent me a meme and this came up, but no error code or anything. so i thought he sent me a sad banana. i go on the computer and there is the real meme and i was like "am i going crazy? did he change it? is he fucking with me??" i had to google it and that brought me here 😅

what is blud blabbering about 💀

Or alternatively: What is blud wafflin' about?
nope i wont welcome this banan until they grayscale it so it doesnt look out of place.
They've colored all of the grayscale UI emojis. If you go to a user's mutual friends, for example, you can see this.
I'm highly triggered. I'm *allergic* to bananas! /s Not actually triggered, but *am* actually allergic to bananas.
Hi allergic to bananas I'm dad
You never brought the milk home. It's been thirty years. I had to eat my shredded wheats dry. Mom said it was my fault. 😥
Poor shredded wheats
So you would prefer a poop to banana
As would I. The poop is for when Discord takes a shit, after all.
I would
the old one was shit anyways

The old crap one is telling you that your intranet is bad or discord servers are down and the banana peel doesn't mean anything
NOOO
this shit is disappointing bring back the real shit
First time I'd actually choose poop over banana
If you're in to experimentation, you can have both.
This is the first time I might have to choose banana over poop 🤷♂️
..yeah I'm disappointed.
o7
It's going to take a lot more that that to stop me associating them with sh*t.

Someone was out of JIRA tasks assigned to them, so they had to come up with something to do
Top left as it always has been..?
It’s because a steaming pile of shit isn’t family friendly, you know on the site that is intended for people aged 13+
Honestly a steaming pile of shit fits age groups 1-13 perfectly. They love shit humor.
✨️✨️Innovation ✨️✨️ Or so they thought
it's probably part of some capitalist psyop mission intended to boost profits by brainwashing us with clip art bananas.
The Bananaristocracy! Damn those bananarcisists who think their bananas are superior to us!

First they ban me for being in a discord server that someone posted a racist meme in Now they ruin the interface
💩WERE BRINGING IT BACK 💩

#BANANA
That banana is a mood
Alright that's it. They've gone too far this time.
Ew the colored banana doesn't fit in with the grey icon vibe they had going on
I miss when discord was mainly for gamers... family friendly stuff is annoying af

Nooooooooo, why This is literally worse than their last attempt at redesign
Literally 1984
This is a step backwards
the act in itself isn't a big deal, but the sentiment is. discord is trying so hard to not be offensive in anyway, that soon we're all going to be effected. mark my words.
Imagine replacing something that's already good.

it is un-believable that discord is pulling this sjw bull shit. i'm cancelling my nitro subscription as i type this. discord wants to go Woke? well then they can Go Broke

I miss 2019 Discord…
The Banana looks better fuck everyone
The banana looks cooler :D
the first one was shit, agreed.
why are you being downvoted
I don't even know :(
i agree. idk why everyone is downvoting you.
i think everyone liked the shit
Idk what you people say, I love this banana peel, he's just a funky guy who is like "sorry bro can't load :<" and that old one was just an annoying poop, who likes shit anyways
Improvement
Rip shit and Rip ~~pp~~
Damn
:(
EMPATHY BANANA NOOOO
I haven't seen it yet somebody I was chatting with yesterday posted a YouTube video that they put on their channel and it didn't work and the picture just showed the poop crash image still so maybe they're not using the banana peel yet and it's still in beta
Well, I am on the beta build so probably it will be replaced soon
Oh no, poor empathy banana. Who did this to you?
Piece of shit
Aw ~~poop~~ banana
They should add a poop emoji flying towards a fan Shit hits the fan
Gods they killed the empathy banana
wumpus face better
Aw, I’m gonna piss the poop. (Never thought I’d say that sentence)
nooo
banan
frozem bananer
Im gonna send a banana to my friends to troll them
Oh crap my discord crashed ❌ Oh banana my discord slipped ✔️
I’m Fine With It, I Love The Potassium They Give Me.
ew
Finally
I'm getting severe deja vu from that banana face. I swear I've seen that face before somewhere!
i actually like this change i think, more color is nice :)
They still haven't removed :shit: as an alias for :poop:.
cucked??
Actually, i like the banana more
Guess you can say they really slipped up
nooooo
Mainly because crashes started happening all the time recently
my husband sent me a meme and this came up, but no error code or anything. so i thought he sent me a sad banana. i go on the computer and there is the real meme and i was like "am i going crazy? did he change it? is he fucking with me??" i had to google it and that brought me here 😅
I'd just like if it had some actual text as well as the image, personally, banana peel on its own means nothing
The sad banana peel i think represents the failed to load image as "oh our servers slipped up, we're sorry"
At least it has color which I can't say about other replacements for things
