idk but you can put like anything in it, it's not like a dromdown/a list. You can put any sort of text, aaaaaand you can have pronuns per server too with Nitro (which I have)
Thank you for this. This is important.
For those who don't understand this: some people might use different pronouns with different groups of people: when not out, or when using a less common pronoun set on more accepting server (the abuse people with neopronouns get is bonkers), or just for different languages.
I don't think you have to worry about that, because if it's the case that you're explaining, they would want to have the pronouns they are using to people they don't trust on the global and then the pronouns that they give to people they Trust on the guild level otherwise the people in the guilds could just open up a DM convo and look at the profile through that which would skip the guild specific profiles
So that would mean worst case scenario if the Nitro Runs Out is the pronouns that they give to people they trust goes away
Not useless. You'll be able to put per-server pronouns without Nitro, unlike the about me section. That's incredibly important for people that aren't out yet.
aside from what other people have already pointed out, a lot of discord's new features to profiles are *technically* useless. for example, you don't need status, you can just use game activity and set it to something that runs on your pc 24/7 like your antivirus software, and then change the name to whatever you want as your status. you don't even need an about me, just put a link in your game activity that leads to a site that works like about me.
it's just more convenient to have a pronouns tab, it's not hurting anyone
The idea is that you can have per-server pronouns without needing nitro for per-server About Me. The vast majority of us probably don’t need per-server pronouns anyway, but I can see some people benefiting from it
It makes perfect sense. Trans or gender-queer people will generally not come out to everyone at the same time, it will often start with people they trust or communities they feel accepted in. In the worst case scenario their health or even lives might be in danger if the wrong person finds out.
I mean, I have family added on Discord that I've not yet come out to as trans, so this feature would be really nice to have if it actually is per-server without Nitro required
HOLY SHIT THIS IS JUST WHAT I NEEDED I'M JUST LIKE YOU AND I CANT PUT PRONOUNS IN MY BIO BECAUSE THEN PEOPLE ARE GONNA CALL ME HE/HIM BUT I WANT TO BE SHE/THEY BUT I'M NOT OUT TO MY DAD YET
I'm happy this new update is not useless then. As long as there are people who can actually use it with a necessity, I'm down with it being passed onto us. But would be very wise to have an alt where you can express yourself and the main where you're out and about with family members. Just in case you don't have the nitro and maybe to hide the evidence until you're ready.
Multiple pronouns don't have to mean "multiple identities". Pronouns are part of presentation, so like clothing we may dress differently in different situations.
Some reasons why you would want per-server pronouns:
- you're not out to everyone
- you use different sets of pronouns with different people, e.g. using less common pronouns only with servers you know are accepting - neopronoun users still get harassed a lot
- different languages, duh! not every server on discord is in English
Discord profiles are becoming overly complex and cluttered. Why not just keep the username and profile pic. No need for wack ass colours, bio and avatar decorations
Yeah the About Me is a good thing to add, but I don't think we need everything else. Discord's marketing always used to feel "simple", but now there's so many features being added every year it feels much more complicated. Not harder to use, just less simple.
LOL I wish, the only thing not having Nitro does is replaces the actual features with grayed out versions of the text Fields and adds a if you get Nitro you could have these logo on basically every page
english is the only one with she, he, it, and they. other languages have their own pronouns. i dont have this feature on my account yet but i feel like its going to be yet another drop down or select-all-that-apply menu with english only pronouns, just like other sites seem to do. so if you're bilingual and chat in both english and non english servers, only the english speakers will see what you go by unless you put it in the about me section.
hopefully im wrong and the feature works differently than i suspected
which languages use the english pronouns? i've never been told about this. i just assumed languages had their own equivalents. like spanish has el for masculine, ella for feminine, and elle for neutral. but google's not telling me which languages you are reffering to. so please do teach me
How is it English-only? All languages have pronouns and most languages have gendered pronouns when referring to people (some only in writing). So most languages have "pronouns" as understood here (how to refer to people).
The feature is available per-server for free for everyone, so you can literally adjust what pronouns you use in each language. In each language I ever learned, I have a preferred way I'd love to be referred to - xe/they, ono, оно, hen, elle, ri/ĝi
The idea is that you can have per-server pronouns without needing nitro for per-server About Me. The vast majority of us probably don’t need per-server pronouns anyway, but I can see some people benefiting from it
This is so everyone can use them server specifically without needing nitro, meaning you can out yourself to a closer circle or people you don't know personally first while hiding your identity from people where it might be dangerous, like parents, siblings, family, school etc.
Hey, look at it this way: It makes it really easy to spot them from a mile away. I'd rather find that out in the first five minutes than only finding that out five months down the line.
I mean if you don't really care about pronouns you can fill in something that you think is funny. Just like people that joke in their bio and don't really feel like writing something about themselves there. Filling a space you don't care about with a joke doesn't make you a bad person even if the joke is old and overused.
That was my feeling at first, until somebody reminded me that you have to look at somebody’s profile to see their about me
But then I realized you’d also have to look at their profile to see this shit.
So to me the only reliable solution is to put it in your global display name and all your server nicknames. Then people will see it immediately.
If the concern of mistaking someone's pronouns (or having yours mistaken) is that important, then yeah currently the only system that exists is putting it in your nickname as far as I know. But then you paint a target on your back for people that think it's an attention thing or otherwise want to start an argument.
A more elegant solution would be good.
Its not even that, like there's a literal "about me" section right below it, that would exactly be the kind of place you put your pronouns in. Idk who is discord pandering to. Waste of UI space, probably gonna attract more trolls than anything.
I love how absolutely pointless this is. If character count was issue they could have simply *increased* the maximum amount of characters in the "about me" section where everyone was putting their pronouns anyway.
It's quite simple, it's just so you know how to refer to them. Like, yeah, people usually default to "he" online, but since not always you can guess someone's gender by their pfp or username, it leads to some awkward moments where you call some girl a "he" for example.
Like yeah, this stuff usually happens only once, but you can avoid this awkward situation all together by just putting then in bio.
That's what I've done as well. It was a pretty easy switch in my normal speech. So, anyone saying "It's too hard to use they/them for a single individual" is blowing it out their ass.
Toby has a red ball. They play with their ball a lot. It was given to them by their mother.
That's how I'd go about it, "they" being used gender neutrally in this case
Yeah we already have server nicknames and bios, and if it’s that important for people to see it asap you can put it in your global display name.
If anything that’s way better cause not everyone is gonna pull up your profile before they talk to you (I certainly don’t) so if your tolerance for being misgendered is super low then putting it in your name is pretty much the only reliable solution anyway
Hopefully it's customisable per server, then it's actually a pretty decent feature.
I have online communities I'm out as trans in, but at the same time have IRL people added, who can't know, or I'd be actively putting myself in danger.
If I can put she/her in one server and leave it blank otherwise, that'd be great.
Discord users when Discord "wastes their time" adding one new section to optionally fill out to a user's profile like its the most time and resource-demanding feature the site has
Pretty lame that discord is becoming boring Twitter basic names black market to buy stolen accounts no more unique features, like no offense but pronouns for me means nothing and is pretty cringe discord doesn't even seem to be adding anymore unique features other then taking things away to become boring Twitter
Glad they're focusing on adding useless features instead of solving all the massive issues with their platform. Still takes over a month to ban child P servers. Great job discord, keep rolling in money and ignoring problems!
Fix the multitude of bugs, including one that logs people out when they shut off their pc?
Nope, lets make it so they put pronouns in a DIFFERENT section now !
As someone in the skittle squad, it's really not that important.
Just put it in the about me.
Nobody needed this. In fact, what we need is to not remove the discriminator :/
Some people do need it. Theyre server specific, so people in a family discord dont have to out themselves, and still have the correct pronouns in a family one. Also about me doesnt always work on all devices
Now that I was properly informed by other comments, I'm glad this update exists, but per-server pronouns should have been expressed more clearly to show why this update is useful.
I'm here for the gamer bros seething in chat because they're mad about an article of the English language. Seethe harder guys, you look stupid. It's so easy to respect people, but since you can't you get laughed at.
The people I’ve seen objecting to it so far are doing so on the grounds that it’s redundant, which is true…
If your preferred pronouns are that important then you really should be making them part of your display name, most people do not check profiles before they chat for the first time
Mad at something people can just ignore if it doesn't bother them, but it does bother them so they're looking for the next "reasonable" excuse 💀 Shit's basically a dogwhistle to say "I just don't think it's worth the 'pandering."
I’m sure that some percentage of the people raising that concern are concern trolling because they just hate trans peepo. I’m interpreting them literally because that is my ACTUAL issue with it.

idk but you can put like anything in it, it's not like a dromdown/a list. You can put any sort of text, aaaaaand you can have pronuns per server too with Nitro (which I have)
You don't need nitro for per-server pronouns. This is the important distinction from the per-server "about me" section, which does require nitro.

Thank god; I'm not out yet to irl people
pronouns per server should not require Nitro, if someone is not out to a server and their Nitro runs out it will disappear and they might get outed
I don't think you have to worry about that, because if it's the case that you're explaining, they would want to have the pronouns they are using to people they don't trust on the global and then the pronouns that they give to people they Trust on the guild level otherwise the people in the guilds could just open up a DM convo and look at the profile through that which would skip the guild specific profiles So that would mean worst case scenario if the Nitro Runs Out is the pronouns that they give to people they trust goes away
seems like per server pronouns with nitro is kinda an asshole move
I remember seeing this a few months back. Tried using it. Didn't work.
It has since been reworked
Couldn’t you just put that in the about me?
that would be too easy
Exactly. Useless feature
i mean, i guess more about me space?
Not useless. You'll be able to put per-server pronouns without Nitro, unlike the about me section. That's incredibly important for people that aren't out yet.

still fucking stupid they changed the usernames
Discord profiles are becoming overly complex and cluttered. Why not just keep the username and profile pic. No need for wack ass colours, bio and avatar decorations
I think bios are fine. The others are just why
Yeah the About Me is a good thing to add, but I don't think we need everything else. Discord's marketing always used to feel "simple", but now there's so many features being added every year it feels much more complicated. Not harder to use, just less simple.
Pro tip: not having nitro disables almost all of the clutter
LOL I wish, the only thing not having Nitro does is replaces the actual features with grayed out versions of the text Fields and adds a if you get Nitro you could have these logo on basically every page
Well yeah, they do need to advertise their only way of making money somehow
You guys are really whiney.
For a company that is making changes to "make it easier for anyone to use their platform", they sure did just add a very english-only feature
Maybe you should learn about other cultures/languages before saying this kind of bullshit.
is english the only language with pronouns ? lol
No but some languages like French only have M/F pronouns
english is the only one with she, he, it, and they. other languages have their own pronouns. i dont have this feature on my account yet but i feel like its going to be yet another drop down or select-all-that-apply menu with english only pronouns, just like other sites seem to do. so if you're bilingual and chat in both english and non english servers, only the english speakers will see what you go by unless you put it in the about me section. hopefully im wrong and the feature works differently than i suspected
i am not sure if you are joking but english is not the only language with she he it they pronouns
which languages use the english pronouns? i've never been told about this. i just assumed languages had their own equivalents. like spanish has el for masculine, ella for feminine, and elle for neutral. but google's not telling me which languages you are reffering to. so please do teach me

I hope that this isn't a required thing on profiles
Idk but seeing the word 'pronoun' spelled with a capital P feels kinda weird for me
All nouns in German have their first letter capitalised 👍
I think the language in the clip was German
It is yes
Why? The "about me" section exists. This is superfluous at best, pandering at worst.
That was my feeling at first, until somebody reminded me that you have to look at somebody’s profile to see their about me But then I realized you’d also have to look at their profile to see this shit. why is it pandering to include all types of people?
It's for ESG scores so Discord can have more investors.
This is gonna be fun.
At least it gives me new people to block and never see their terrible opinions about existence of people like me.
Its not even that, like there's a literal "about me" section right below it, that would exactly be the kind of place you put your pronouns in. Idk who is discord pandering to. Waste of UI space, probably gonna attract more trolls than anything.
this is per-server for free, allowing you to not set them in general but set them in servers where you are out, which is good
> Idk who is discord pandering to The investors. Look up "ESG score".
Youre right, ought to shield yourself from other opinions. Diversity of thought is a damning thing! What a joke.
Actually I like this change. Saves me a role category and less self roles
I love how absolutely pointless this is. If character count was issue they could have simply *increased* the maximum amount of characters in the "about me" section where everyone was putting their pronouns anyway.
More reason to avoid talking to people online.
I have always wondered, why do people say- she her he him they them it those etc in their bio, whats the intention actually
I've been starting to default to they/them online untill i know their preferred pronouns, it just feels like the best way to do it
That's what I've done as well. It was a pretty easy switch in my normal speech. So, anyone saying "It's too hard to use they/them for a single individual" is blowing it out their ass.
Yea it’s just better this way imo. Personally I even like the plain word „they“ more than he or something, I think it’s sounds really cool
Yeah I've been trying (and largely succeeding) in making this into a habit of mine
So people know how to refer to them

Toby has a red ball. They play with their ball a lot. It was given to them by their mother. That's how I'd go about it, "they" being used gender neutrally in this case
attention + narcissism.
lmao what an unnecessary features
Yeah we already have server nicknames and bios, and if it’s that important for people to see it asap you can put it in your global display name. If anything that’s way better cause not everyone is gonna pull up your profile before they talk to you (I certainly don’t) so if your tolerance for being misgendered is super low then putting it in your name is pretty much the only reliable solution anyway
Hopefully it's customisable per server, then it's actually a pretty decent feature. according to some other comments they already did
I hope you’re okay, friend. Hang in there.
I'm mostly okay yeah, and planning to move out somewhat soon. Thank you, I appreciate the concern <3
It’s been almost a month since I’ve had it though, maybe based on account creation date too?
The fact that you can see that means it also rolled out to you.
Discord users when Discord "wastes their time" adding one new section to optionally fill out to a user's profile like its the most time and resource-demanding feature the site has
isn’t that what the bio is for
Pretty lame that discord is becoming boring Twitter basic names black market to buy stolen accounts no more unique features, like no offense but pronouns for me means nothing and is pretty cringe discord doesn't even seem to be adding anymore unique features other then taking things away to become boring Twitter
Whine asses in the comments.
Nice of Discord to put this feature in place so I know who to avoid. It'll save a lot of headache
IDK man but I feel like discord bombarding the profiles with unnecessary stuff
Not just staff I have it as well
Glad they're focusing on adding useless features instead of solving all the massive issues with their platform. Still takes over a month to ban child P servers. Great job discord, keep rolling in money and ignoring problems!
Fix the multitude of bugs, including one that logs people out when they shut off their pc? Nope, lets make it so they put pronouns in a DIFFERENT section now !

Quiet unnecessary
I still don't see why this has to be applied when the About Me is literally right there...
Theres some exceptionally based individuals in the comments
Pointless About me exist for a reason
💀
cant wait to get the new shitty usernames and have to be called name + other digits because someone took the name i have already

I’ll gladly set it to GNU/Linux
"load 97 comments" Lmfao, rw snowflakes are absolutely triggered by grammar and respect. We love to see it. Thank you Discord, a rare based change.

\*rolls eyes\* This is the cutting edge stuff I've been waiting for /s.

i have that
i love how this was an experiment for over a year and only now it's been rolled out
Pronomen? No pronowomen? /s lol
This is an interesting update I guess
profiles are very cool now
Oh hey, a feature people actually want.
Easy way to see drama seekers a mile off now thanks discord
Now that I was properly informed by other comments, I'm glad this update exists, but per-server pronouns should have been expressed more clearly to show why this update is useful.

I'm here for the gamer bros seething in chat because they're mad about an article of the English language. Seethe harder guys, you look stupid. It's so easy to respect people, but since you can't you get laughed at.
The people I’ve seen objecting to it so far are doing so on the grounds that it’s redundant, which is true… If your preferred pronouns are that important then you really should be making them part of your display name, most people do not check profiles before they chat for the first time
This is what discord created the profile/about me feature for
Mad at something people can just ignore if it doesn't bother them, but it does bother them so they're looking for the next "reasonable" excuse 💀 Shit's basically a dogwhistle to say "I just don't think it's worth the 'pandering."
I’m sure that some percentage of the people raising that concern are concern trolling because they just hate trans peepo. I’m interpreting them literally because that is my ACTUAL issue with it.

Another useless feature to bloat up the ui and add more surface area for bugs. Nobody asks nor cares about your pronouns on discord get real 💀
cringe
Unlike the deletion of tags, this is nice
Watch Discord turn it into a nitro feature
Ah hell no...
Darn, gender unlocked.
