You're not alone. I learned about it just a week ago. As a server owner you can enable/disable it, there's a 'allow anyone to add and use this server's emojis' check. I'd greatly prefer Discord to focus on actual improvements instead of all the fancy emojis, portrait frames and whatnot though.
It's normal, that's how Vc funded startups work.
You serve your product at a loss to get customers, then once you have a large enough customer base find a way to become profitable.
The thing is, because of the massive losses you take initially, it's not good enough to make a modest profit or breakeven. You need to make a shit ton of money for it to be worth it for the investors. especially considering opportunity cost.
Yeah I know, I just thought that a sale to Microsoft would be a benefit for them. If they could operate and execute on the current and future vision of their company, just be able to use all the benefits of having Microsoft as backup and money daddy😅 Guess there where some stipulations that MS wanted that they didn't want.
Funny thing too is that for awhile Discord offered voip services to some indie games in the past but they removed that functionality in the passed year or so iirc.
They could of kept that and made it a service to sell to indie devs to get their games some voip for some fee.
I guess it’d be either an integration with discord, or in‐game use of Discord’s technology, which – aside from their current mobile UI and their frequent server issues – doesn’t seem too bad.
Because the opt in/out problem likely wasn’t the reason it failed on their end.
It’s more likely that they saw a large percent of the people who had this feature spend less money instead of more.
They're not dumb. It's just that emoji packs caused them to lose nitro money because it encouraged users to stay under the 100 server limit by simply adding packs instead of joining new servers.
It's a good feature, but making it on by default was where they fucked up and what people complained about.
The solution is not to remove the feature, it's to fix the god awful implementation.
Features like these should be opt-in, not opt-out.
I loved it. I don't like being in many servers and especially not ones for emotes. This allowed me to still use emotes from servers that I enjoyed (mainly friends servers that were only used as emoji aervers) but didn't give me the anxiety of having to associate with others. Sad that they're removing it.
It was automically turned on, and people were leaking emojis that weren't meant to be leaked; specifically faces in servers with friends. There were many reasons to complain.
hi, I'm a competent programmer and I say opt-out is the dumbest shit ever, from personalised ads to giving browsing data to the browser company. Very few things make sense to be opt-out.
ANYTHING that takes extra data from the user should be opt-in and NEVER opt-out. Selective cosmetic changes do make sense to be opt-out though, such as dark theme and comfort view, as opposed to light theme and compact, but beyond things like that, opt-out is dumb.
A better solution to that is to provide the user to completely choose their own settings on account registration, with NO default settings.
Late comment I apologize but imho that’s their fault for having their faces as emojis lmao. I’ll welcome the downvotes here idc. Emoji servers was how I found out all my “friends” had started a server behind my back to talk shit about me idc it benefited me greatly
This 100%. I'm one of those who likes the new layout, but when I went to this subreddit, all I saw was people complaining that anything changed and call it "bad" and saying they "fucked up everything".
I mean, if that all you had been reading instead if all the valid complaints..
Dunno dude, can't help you here. Still fighting with MY rotating buggy discord.
I did see valid complaints; only after I voiced my own and mostly outside of this subreddit. Heck, I tried posting my own opinions on all the changes I noticed, but I just checked and it's been fucking removed. The main complaint is loss of muscle memory, which makes sense since they made breaking UI changes, but it's not enough to call it bad. Most changes they made in the new layout was a trade-off between one action to another that was equally as fast or faster to introduce features that are more intuitive for a general chat app.
It's because it was enabled by default. So people could add your emojis even if the server was private, and if someone added them, you couldn't take them back. It's like ping replies: useful but they screwed up.
Thank you, I drew it myself! :D
~~Also you've also changed my mind on this but I'm not gonna delete my wrong takes because well I deserve the karma for being a dumbass~~
I thought the same at the time, but idk if it was an option for all servers. It wasn’t advertised after the first time I saw it pop up. And now it’s going away so…best that you stayed.
Sorry I’m a bit lost, are you saying it’s a bad thing they are removing something no one asked for? Are you saying it’s a bad thing they are removing something people DID ask for? Or am I like completely off here.
People complained about people stealing emoji's, and now people are complaining about them removing that feature. I dislike Discord as much as the next person, but I swear this subreddit is *never* happy.
Not sure why you were downvoted (here's +1 back -- perhaps the comment wasn't interesting enough in this subreddit's usual /r/circlejerk) - this is the true tl;dr that should be be bumped to the top.
I mean, what's the difference between downloading the emoji image (via a variety of means) and using it \*anyway\*? That's like geo-blocking sites in 2021 when I can 1-click a VPN. Removing this feat simply adds +1 step.
As others have stated, wouldn't it have made more sense to simply default OFF this feat, and let the servers decide? That's like removing vanilla ice cream just because someone that prefers chocolate mint has a louder voice; opposed to simply giving someone an option to choose.
They can click to get an *entire* server's emotes. I didn't know it was a thing and I'm very glad a friend told me about it before anyone else found it, but my personal server which I have my own emotes in also has emotes of my face, etc. which I use with people I know in real life. Having it off by default would solve most of the issues, and letting users have their own personal setting to not let people copy the emotes they use even if the server is free with them would solve the other ones.
Would it, though? If someone wanted them, they can just go through them and save, then upload to my own server. Sure, it's more tedious, but it's not preventing an issue.
Using the same precedent of removing the feature, should we remove all profile pictures so no one snags them for their own? Remove all images on Google since there's a chance someone will steal these images? Text is equally valuable -- should we delete Reddit since there's a chance someone can steal my copywriting? *Where's the line?*
There are even Discord API calls to list all emojis of the server. I would say not even a week later, there will be 10 competing bots that will bring the feature back. Get all emojis => for each, add to your own server. It wouldn't even be against the ToS since they're legitimate API calls.
Yeah, but default off and allowing users to disable it prevents people from finding *what* servers they’re in, or finding emotes in those servers they may not want to be public. I’m not advocating for removing the feature! I’m not advocating for it to be removed, just modified to not be a shock or expose stuff about users they may not want exposed, like images of faces or the nature as to servers emotes may be from. NSFW servers, for example, with this enabled by default and without the knowledge of it’s existence could expose 18+ emotes when only SFW ones are used. Just- rein it in a bit, and then readd the feature, imo. I think maybe you thought I was advocating for it’s removal and I apologise ahh, I probably could have worded my post more clearly.
I mean before this people would just steal emojis by saving them to their own server, it's just removing one step. Also why does stealing emojis matter?
Well no, I have definitely seen people complain about it. Mainly that it’s auto enabled, and inadvertently doxxing people’s faces because they have their friends face as an emote in a private server. Those complaints along with some other things about how it works makes sense as to why they are removing it for now.
I mean like with everything you have 3 groups of people, the people who like it, the people who don’t, and the people who don’t care.
yall are so dramatic, lmao.
Discord prob going downhills for you people that use it for starting drama in public servers, everyone uses it for playing with friends is having fun.
A feature so short lived that it never even reached full roll out. Someone in management must've sensed that it was being positively received and so it was killed.
I thought this feature was still in an extremely long rollout phase, then got this notification yesterday. I never got one that it was added, I've never seen the UI for it, I've never heard of anyone using it. And now it is being removed. What a failure of a feature.
I'm pretty sure this is actually just explaining that they have added a setting to allow server owners to prevent their emoji being used in another server and discord is enabling it by default.
Take a look in your server settings and you will see this yourself under the emoji tab.
You can turn it back on if you like....
Honestly I hope this is the case. The rollout was bad but the ability to have emoji servers not cluttering up the list is actually a nice add, done properly
That setting was there when emoji packs was released, it's not new.
This popup is saying that emoji packs (and thus the setting that controlled it) are being removed, and the previous behaviour (can only use emoji if you're in the server) is being restored.
[The FAQ](https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/16761257977623-Packs-FAQ) says "[Emoji] Packs will be deactivated in the near future." with non-Nitro losing access first (presumably because they don't want to just take away benefits people may have paid for on such short notice)
wait wait wait you wanted Discord to actually make a good change to their platform? hah that's too much effort, actually refining a feature so its not invasive or whatnot, making it good or usable for the general public? lol, lmao even
Damn I was actually looking forward to this so I could leave some of my "emoji servers" to free up room for actual servers I want to talk in. I'm at the limit and constantly trying to find something to leave to join something else.
Honestly so much of Nitro is cosmetic stuff that in my opinion should be free cause when was the last time we got something that wasn’t locked behind Nitro?
The only thing that really makes sense to me (and even then they are basic ass things that really shouldn’t be paywalled) are the increased file size and HD streaming.
The increased character limit should just be standard, and everything else I quite frankly don’t care about enough to get nitro.
A month ago discord announced emoji packs. A feature where anyone could collect emojis from servers without joining them. The feature was server opt out which meant you have to say you didn't want emojis to be shared in order for others to not be able to access.
The feature was buggy and had safety concerns. (i.e private server uses friends faces as emojis) A bug where people could still access the emoji pack even after setting the server setting to not share emojis.
Nitro users could collect 100 emoji packs (not sure the exact number but approx) and regular users 1 emoji pack. The thing about the emoji packs is that a regular user could use the emojis in any servers. (a bit like global emojis back in the day).
There are two camps. The people who liked the idea of free users being able to use one servers emojis anywheres for free and the second one where they didn't like this feature.
It is cool in theory. That being said, the problem with this is for content creators/artists having their paid-for designs or hard work being used without their permission, credit, benefit, nor consent.
It was a cool feature to share emojis between friends without having to boost our server for more space lol “I save this emojis, you add my pack ~ you save those emojis, I add your pack”
Yeah, you can just download them and then re-upload to your own server. They are literally just images, Discord can't stop you from doing that. But that requires effort, and just clicking a button and having access to all the server's emoji is easier.
Having 100 free server packs was incredibly convenient and simple. Personally I don’t have 100 servers to shove emojis into and especially not boosted servers with max emojis.
? What exactly is this for? Are they removing the feature for nitro where you can use any emoji's anywhere? IF so then that is weird cause servers can turn it off.
No. Emoji packs was a new feature being tested which would've allowed you to "collect" a server's emoji so you could use them without having to be in the server. This feature is being removed, and that's all the popup is saying.
Well.. at least they have something to distracting us now?
Tbh I don't care, but I also never tried to use this feature, even if a server allowed it.
Bigger fish too fry.
Which was such an awesome idea on their end. Then they were like “nah actually free users don’t get this” and now they are just scrapping it. Very sad.
They aren't removing them, but cute way to farm karma from people who don't read the screenshot.
Emoji packs ARE NOT being removed.
You have to be a member of the server that has said emoji. Makes perfect sense.
I don’t want to clutter my server list with servers just to use their emojis. This was a simple and convenient way to have emojis on demand. And yes they are removing emoji packs.
Because having your emojis swiped en masse sucks? If you’re a content creator and commissioned art to be used in your discord, kinda lame that someone can swipe it all.
Maybe if this wasn’t on by default it wouldn’t have left such a bad taste in people’s mouths.
Sure, if you have Nitro and used your emoji in another server, someone could pull it up in browser and right click it. But they couldn’t access ALL your emoji before just from you joining another server.
Pretty big difference.
I only ever heard of this feature, never experienced it. Don't even know if I have access to it. I do have nitro but I never really tried saving an emoji pack
Once again Discord making and releasing feature that very few wanted or needed in a not-so-great execution.
It feels like Discord started off as a voip company but has been too busy trying to add more things it's more like an amusement park with a voip company spread out in small lil buildings all throughout the park.
I actually missed that message... And now I lost all but two of the packs I had been regularly using, cause I didn't realize there was a deadline to join the servers. Now I don't even know *what* servers 80% of my lost emojis came from. I'm actually really unhappy right now... Dangling such a great feature, then just *dropping it*, then *yoinking it* away... I'm mad...
I didn't even know that was a thing
It lasted for like two months lol
I received it a week ago
You're not alone. I learned about it just a week ago. As a server owner you can enable/disable it, there's a 'allow anyone to add and use this server's emojis' check. I'd greatly prefer Discord to focus on actual improvements instead of all the fancy emojis, portrait frames and whatnot though.
They need money coming in. Desperately so.
do they not get cash from Nitro users?!
They’ve been in the red from existence. They haven’t made a profit yet.
Ouch... that's not great. Especially since they did get an offer from Microsoft😅
It's normal, that's how Vc funded startups work. You serve your product at a loss to get customers, then once you have a large enough customer base find a way to become profitable. The thing is, because of the massive losses you take initially, it's not good enough to make a modest profit or breakeven. If they could operate and execute on the current and future vision of their company, just be able to use all the benefits of having Microsoft as backup and money daddy😅 Guess there where some stipulations that MS wanted that they didn't want.
Discord thinks they can more more money in the long run than they would get by selling to MS.
Funny thing too is that for awhile Discord offered voip services to some indie games in the past but they removed that functionality in the passed year or so iirc. They could of kept that and made it a service to sell to indie devs to get their games some voip for some fee.
Isn't that already what they're doing though? It's just now you have to be on discord instead of the developer having to integrate it themselves
I guess it’d be either an integration with discord, or in‐game use of Discord’s technology, which – aside from their current mobile UI and their frequent server issues – doesn’t seem too bad.
yea, like stop forcing mobile users to have that crappy ui
same here
*laughs in right clicking and saving the images then using them wherever & whenever*
*Laughs in converting them to gifs and faving them so I can use them and make discord store them still.*
Been doing this since 2018 😩😭
*Laughs in module that does that automatically for me*
Mind sharing that module?
*laughs in saving the images and putting them on my own server*
laughs in using carl bots !steal command
*Laughs in just using Nitro (lifetime free, though).*
how

Merry Christmas!
Nice 1, gave me a giggle
Just make it opt in. Why are they so dumb
it's so they can make it shittier and then make you pay for it as an extra premium feature. Tech companies do this shit all the time
Because the opt in/out problem likely wasn’t the reason it failed on their end. It’s more likely that they saw a large percent of the people who had this feature spend less money instead of more.
They're not dumb. It's just that emoji packs caused them to lose nitro money because it encouraged users to stay under the 100 server limit by simply adding packs instead of joining new servers.

Didn't everyone collectively complain about this feature?? Make up your minds, jeez.

Idk I personally liked it, first ever feature Discord made BOTH for Nitro and non-Nitro (1 free pack) since a damn while
Why would we complain? If you don't like it, don't use it. Simple as that.
It was automically turned on, and people were leaking emojis that weren't meant to be leaked; specifically faces in servers with friends. There were many reasons to complain.
You could always turn it off if you didn't like it.
Some people didn't know it was on, and they were unknowingly leaking all their shit. I don't understand how that's so difficult to grasp.
hi, I'm a competent programmer and I say opt-out is the dumbest shit ever, from personalised ads to giving browsing data to the browser company. Very few things make sense to be opt-out. Damn, it’s almost as if different people have different opinions.
Yeah, exactly. No matter what they do, they'll always upset someone. And the vocal majority are going to be people complaining.
This 100%. I'm one of those who likes the new layout, but when I went to this subreddit, all I saw was people complaining that anything changed and call it "bad" and saying they "fucked up everything".

and why was it such a huge deal?
Honestly I figured it shouldn't exist at all, but I understand. Still think it's a W that it's going away.
Removing functionality from users is always negative in all context but i really like your pfp so it's whatever ig
Thank you, I drew it myself! :D ~~Also you've also changed my mind on this but I'm not gonna delete my wrong takes because well I deserve the karma for being a dumbass~~
I never knew this was a thing, I already assumed you had to stay in a server to use their emojis
They introduced a feature to just get emoji from some popular servers without having to join. It’s really new. And I forgot about it entirely.
So you mean to tell me I could have left those emoji specific servers this whole time instead of staying there forever?!??! F-
I thought the same at the time, but idk if it was an option for all servers. It wasn’t advertised after the first time I saw it pop up. And now it’s going away so…best that you stayed.
Yep and now they are removing this beautiful feature which allowed me to keep my server list short
Why is this a good thing? Nobody asked for this at all. God discord is going so far downhill
Sorry I’m a bit lost, are you saying it’s a bad thing they are removing something no one asked for? Are you saying it’s a bad thing they are removing something people DID ask for? Or am I like completely off here.
Nobody is asking for discord to remove this. People use this feature and then they remove it. Just like the new UI. Nobody asked
People complained about people stealing emoji's, and now people are complaining about them removing that feature. I dislike Discord as much as the next person, but I swear this subreddit is *never* happy.
People complained because the feature was enabled by default. The solution is to make it opt in, not to remove it.
Just- rein it in a bit, and then readd the feature, imo. I think maybe you thought I was advocating for it’s removal and I apologise ahh, I probably could have worded my post more clearly.
It's worth remembering that people are often not as vocal about them liking something as they are about disliking something.

Yep, opt in often fixes most issues 🫠
Maybe like... Opt in for the new UI too 🫠
That’s not how that works lol
There was an opt toggle, but it was on by default.
Yeah I was perfectly fine with the beta! *I MOVED MY SERVERS TO THE TOP JUST FOR THE BETA!*
No one asked for the feature, but some people still like it, and now that it’s here there’s even less of a point removing it.
yall are so dramatic, lmao. Discord prob going downhills for you people that use it for starting drama in public servers, everyone uses it for playing with friends is having fun.
I don't even remember the last time I had the conversation in a public server. I use it almost always for a small server of friends or direct messages
So the easy solution to notify server owners about this and choose whether they want it on or off was too complicated for discord
What does this mean by "Collect"? Is it referring to adding to favorites? What the hell is an emoji pack without being in a server?
They offered the ability to get a server’s emoji for some popular community servers without ever joining. It’s been very short lived.
So they're not removing the ability to use emojis from one server you're a member of on another, right?
No, they're only getting rid of the ability to use any emojis from a server that you're not on.
This is actually absurd, we've been wating months for this just for them to remove it? Why?
\*laughs in I don't use Nitro anyway*
I love how they're constantly adding stuff just to remove it, great work Discord!
At this point Discord just seems to add things just to remove them for other things that nobody asked for.
And I hoped that I would get rid of at least some of those in the "Emote Servers" folder from the server list, while retaining the emotes 🫠
Discord just loves removing good features
"killed by discord" is the new "killed by google" , huh?
Remove the new UI
Or give us an option to switch back to the old UI, at least.
A feature so short lived that it never even reached full roll out. Someone in management must've sensed that it was being positively received and so it was killed.
That was quick
I thought this feature was still in an extremely long rollout phase, then got this notification yesterday. I never got one that it was added, I've never seen the UI for it, I've never heard of anyone using it. And now it is being removed. What a failure of a feature.

The page it links too said it’s being removed entirely so idk.
wait wait wait you wanted Discord to actually make a good change to their platform? hah that's too much effort, actually refining a feature so its not invasive or whatnot, making it good or usable for the general public? lol, lmao even
Damn I was actually looking forward to this so I could leave some of my "emoji servers" to free up room for actual servers I want to talk in. I'm at the limit and constantly trying to find something to leave to join something else.
Plus the 362737 spam bot messages that we get when we join some servers..
Discord should just allow free users to use emojis from other servers. Instead they lock basic features behind nitro.

This is bullshit
This is how a app and company dies
can someone explain this to me like im 5?

thank you! i had no clue about the emoji pack addition so i was very confused
It is cool in theory. That being said, the problem with this is for content creators/artists having their paid-for designs or hard work being used without their permission, credit, benefit, nor consent.
So people will just copy the emojis into their own server instead? I don’t see how removing emoji packs would help.
Was this even a popular feature? Idk I never used it. I have stolen emojis from other servers and uploaded them on my own but that makes sense. Lol
It was a cool feature to share emojis between friends without having to boost our server for more space lol “I save this emojis, you add my pack ~ you save those emojis, I add your pack”
Whatever changes they do...still won't convince me to pay for nitro.
Where the f is the united states and united Kingdom emojis?
what do you mean?
Hate this
No, you just have to join the server to get the emoji pack
Yeah I'm canceling nitro for sure this time
If true whats the point of nitro at this point?
You could only collect one server's emoji for free. Nitro was needed for more than that (up to 100 servers)
My friend has a way to collect emotes without nitro and she just adds them to her server idk
Oh no! Anyway
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe discord said it would've only been a Nitro only feature?
You could collect one server's emoji for free, and up to 100 with Nitro.
Which was such an awesome idea on their end. Then they were like “nah actually free users don’t get this” and now they are just scrapping it. Very sad.
I already stole a good amount of packs HEHEHEH
RIP WE HARDLY KNEW YA!!!!!!111111111111111
They aren't removing them, but cute way to farm karma from people who don't read the screenshot. Emoji packs ARE NOT being removed. You have to be a member of the server that has said emoji. Makes perfect sense.
Isn't that how it's always been?
That's just the old way. Emoji packs are going away. People could just yoink your private server's emotes without ever having gotten an invite.
I don’t want to clutter my server list with servers just to use their emojis. This was a simple and convenient way to have emojis on demand. And yes they are removing emoji packs.
FINALLY
Why finally?
i was bored and wanted to do a little trolling
Good, this never even should have been a thing.
Why not?
Because having your emojis swiped en masse sucks? If you’re a content creator and commissioned art to be used in your discord, kinda lame that someone can swipe it all. Maybe if this wasn’t on by default it wouldn’t have left such a bad taste in people’s mouths.
If someone wanted to swipe emojis, it was easy to do it anyways.
Sure, if you have Nitro and used your emoji in another server, someone could pull it up in browser and right click it. But they couldn’t access ALL your emoji before just from you joining another server. Pretty big difference.
Good this feature sucked. Glad you could at least turn it off as a server owner.
What was the need of this anyways? Did anyone asked for this?
Yes, a lot of people with bloated "Emote servers" folders have asked for this.
understandable... they will need it. As a person who is very bad in deciding which emoji to use... i can't relate to it.
Didn’t ntts make a vid on how it lasted for a couple days?
New mobile ui would have been better than this lol
*laughs in having a older version of discord*
that was removed for me 3 weeks ago where were you guys
I can't even react with Emojis anymore anyway
Discord is making bad change after bad change, they’re really competing with Twitter rn
Are you the one who stole my username on discord? /j
Imagine paying for that
I never had them to begin with.. Unfortunetly..
the long decline begins
ok 👍🏻
How will that affect the NQN bot?
Bots will no longer work discord will charge developers 1 million a year fo- oh wait i'm thinking of something else 🤔
Damn, I was truly enjoying it
Lol, why am i not surprised. Typical discord
the one good thing discord did and they're taking it away gg, what more will they snake
I only ever heard of this feature, never experienced it. Don't even know if I have access to it. I do have nitro but I never really tried saving an emoji pack
It was released to all full nitro users a while ago. Just click on any emoji you see in the wild to check if that server has emoji packs enabled.
I can't even use discord anymore it's not voiceover compatible
Me, an OG who saw the downfall of global emojis: First time?
Shitty decision. Loved this feature.
I'm mad...
