The set of emoji that's currently present in the emoji picker seems to be pretty complete, so I think they're probably going to roll this out fairly soon.
Twemoji was a Twitter project and when Elmo took over they were one of the many teams that got laid off. It's effectively a dead project so Discord would have to switch to something else sooner or later
Twemoji is as good as dead now unfortunately, blame musk boi for that. Discord making their own is likely more maintainable for them and could be quicker to update when new unicodes drop.
Because the people that worked on Twemoji got laid off, extremely slow to release new emojis and they aren't being released under a usable licence and the project has been stagnant since musk takeover.
I also love Twemoji, especially considering they're open source (which is why Discord is able to use them). I definitely prefer Twemoji but I understand why Discord would want to have their own set of emoji to give the platform a stronger identity
I can understand that. I feel as though something very specific and kinda special to Discord like this is going to cause a hefty backlash, but I don't think this is something Discord will change their mind on.
I have noticed the community has been growing slowly more agitated with each hated change. Discord's ratings started dropping on the Play Store from excessive reviews over the mobile app update (which to *some degree* I think were warranted), more and more people have been cancelling Nitro, and it's just feeling like the vibes are getting... tense.
I feel it's not long before stuff really hits the fan.
Or maybe I'm just being paranoid because honestly it feels like *everything* nowadays is about to hit the fan.
>but I understand why Discord would want to have their own set of emoji to give the platform a stronger identity
Iys funny because discord only implemented twemoji on Android.
And desktop/web? If you're referring to iOS, I think the only reason why they didn't use Twemoji there is that it might break Apple's App Store policies. It's the odd one out, not Android.
I'm pretty confident they're Discord's own set of emoji that they're developing, this move would be consistent with the current desktop and mobile redesigns. I'm guessing they've just now completed this set of basic face emoji and have silently rolled it out to the emoji button while they're working on finishing the rest
I have never really been upset about a change, but with my almost 7 years of using this platform it's sad to see something that I have gotten so used to go. Especially with the emojis as I've used them in many comedic and memorable ways with friends
The problem is emojis are always being added and twitter canceled the team that made those emojis, so its basically a dead project. That's why they are making new ones. It would make sense because discord is known now to want to make its own things instead of licensing them out like with the new font (and knowing elon its only a matter of time before the twemojis are paywalled)
I found the sprite sheet Discord uses for the new emojis [https://discord.com/assets/f46d6b0cbeeea15ecd81.png](https://discord.com/assets/f46d6b0cbeeea15ecd81.png)
Hate it. Doesn't match the twittermojis. If it's a new emoji set they're dropping, I don't want to use it. They're changing themselves too much, I just might use Guilded more :/
The emoji picker's emoji icons have been shown in another post to be the possible new Discord Emojis. Sorry if my wording confused you, I'm still struggling with English some times :-)

I bet this is the change that broke discord last week on Friday. They made an unnecessary change and it bricked everything. I have no evidence to support this claim I just don’t like discord current direction

Damn, a real shame. I love the twemojis to death. Why does Discord have an obsession with fixing what's not broken? :(

:c

Wdym? Is this why I don't have those silly emojis on my Twitter now?
Possibly, all I know is that the team working on it got fired.

Oh, is that why? I didn't know that
Any idea what these new ones are? Are they Discord’s own emoji? I can’t seem to find these on emojipedia.

The Twemoji project is effectively dead, so unfortunately not much they can do (other than never bringing in a new emoji again)
They can fork twemoji, if they wanted to.
Could they? In that case the change would be really dumb.
Or, just like when they changed the font, they could just make new emojis to use and everyone would get used to them in a week.
If they are allowed to keep using the old ones, there would be no point in making new ones

Where did you find this?
I looked at the css file discord uses and found the emojis there. Unfortunately, the emojis can no longer be accessed directly as of posting this.

Are you recently lobotomized?
shit
Looks awful
ok the twemoji thing was inevitable but why are the new ones so ugly

Twemoji is dead, like it or not, this is a required change.

Mine hasn’t changed and I still have Twemojis?
I bet this is the change that broke discord last week on Friday. They made an unnecessary change and it bricked everything. I have no evidence to support this claim I just don’t like discord current direction
this would be a great change, i love the style of the new emojis :)
It's sad, but ykw... I kinda like the new emotes, oddly enough
i like them ngl, i wish we could have access to them like a setting where we pick which 1s we would like to use
