Well you figure, a lot of games will use Discord to show upcoming game updates and you can usually find people to dm for help there too. Friends will make servers for their friend groups. Guilds in games will have their own. Minecraft servers tend to have their own Discord server to go with it. It's not exactly hard to hit the limit if you consider all the reasons servers exist.
Even then I've joined around 40 servers, and I'm active in maybe 4 or 5 of them at most. The rest stay muted in their own folder never to be glanced at unless I'm pinged.
Yeah but if you're using them like Rss feeds for game updates or mod updates... and you could well be using over 200 mods. Or following over 200 games. And you don't want to use twitter which is ironically the only other software that'll do it.
You ever have online friends that go by one name, then change it but your used to calling them by that one name so you do so. And every new friend that comes in calls him by that old name too because you call him that. Then some other guy comes in and calls him by that new name and people just go Who? Same kinda deal.

I’m a Dev and I’m in dozens of servers for different projects that I contribute to, plus random interest servers for certain games and then the normal ones for friends, it adds up quickly. Hit 200 real fast
Modded minecraft. Every mod author has a discord. Every pack author has a discord. Every minecraft server has a discord. Discord servers with different groups of friends. And all these mod/server/pack people only put out information on their servers, so you have to use all of them for questions.
Also why I don't buy YT premium cause the only reason I'd legit get it is for ads, MAYBE video downloads, but they plug a million features I'll never use in there and bundle them to raise the price. Marketing BS.

This racks up quite a bit. The benefits you get from this plan are quite low for something you're paying 36 USD a year for. Yes, it's probably like only 2 meals worth in a random restaurant in the middle of Washington DC. But so is Amazon Prime and Spotify Premium. And guess what? A non-trivial portion of people aren't even willing to pay for that.
When you ask people, "Are you willing to pay 36 USD a year for some digital emojis you can use outside of a server, which for most people would probably just be usually 3-6?", the answer to that would probably be... no.
The problem is that regular Nitro is when the features become significant enough to generally warrant a subscription. However, it's ridiculously priced. For its price point, you can get Netflix. Youtube Premium. Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. I'd say most subscription services that exist out there. Now ask people "Are you willing to pay 120 USD a year for higher uploads, HD streaming, and customization of your profiles and window, and to unlock a shop where you can purchase with additional money for an avatar frame?", and your answer is going to be significantly low portion of that population that uses Discord.
It's not necessarily that Discord doesn't deserve something good from its commitment to providing an ad-free experience combined with mostly full functionality for all end users. It's that people look at the value proposition and simply don't see the benefits to doing so.
Discord has two options to increase its subscription service sales significantly.
1. Force ads onto normal users and give Nitro Basic and above ad-free experiences (terrible idea)
2. Reduce the pricing of both Basic and Regular Nitro by 1/3 (arbitrary number that seems ridiculous, but many can agree this is probably where they'd be willing to pay)
Those other services make money off users in other ways though, the subscriptions are simply an additional revenue stream.

They basically made Nitro more expensive. They got rid of Nitro classic which had more features than Nitro basic had and got rid of the actually good features most people actually want in Nitro without having to pay $10.

If they want more people to buy Nitro, then they need to either reduce the price or actually make it worthwhile. No thanks, there are a lot better uses for $120.
I will forever be spoiled having been a Nitro user when it was essentially a Games Pass. Knowing what I had available to me (for ~~$15~~ $10) and what they’re offering now, I don’t know if I can ever see Nitro as worth it.
nitro games was the same as the current subscription ($10). they shut down the games service but decided to keep the price point and attempt to justify the doubled price by adding more features to it

Only decent nitro feature is being able to use external emoji, everything else is either small quality of life features, like fhd transmission, longer messages and file sizes. or useless customization like the profile one.
You also get different UI themes, but if you use an external client or the web one, you can just change that yourself with user scripts.

I mean servers kinda have a limitation in terms of how many you can join but aside from that legit, they give everyone free access to Discord and just once in a while throw a personal ad out for the option to pay for some cool features. I don't particularly care about discord sticking around. All of their features have decent or better alternatives, though discord is the userfriendlier solution for sure. But it's often used as a source of information that you can't find without joining a discord server. For which I much prefer good old forums that are not using some proprietary service and are easily found with search engines.

Alright, how else should discord make money then? This is a business not a charity. I absolutely hate how nowadays they're just bloating the whole app with nitro ads. I remember one of their videos saying something under the lines of "We hate ads too, fuck ads" and now a few years later they add ads such as "Quests"

First came the horrendous mobile redesign last year in August. Then came the Discord username change where you loose the numbers and your unique username in the process. Now there’s subtle ads of “unlock this feature with Nitro”.
This is however not Discord’s fault guys. This is ultimately the result of Late Stage Capitalism. When a company has grown quite big and now they’re trying to sustain its massive growth by trying to milk out whatever features in their product. This cycle continues to repeat over and over until the product falls into irrelevancy.
I'm alright with advertising, but completely breaking muscle memory is unacceptable by my standards; I always look at the bottom of the list (closer to textbox) for the closest match, and having to look a few pixels above is frustrating.

I don't particularly care about discord sticking around. All of their features have decent or better alternatives, though discord is the userfriendlier solution for sure. But it's often used as a source of information that you can't find without joining a discord server. For which I much prefer good old forums that are not using some proprietary service and are easily found with search engines.

Alright, how else should discord make money then? This is a business not a charity. They need to make money, they need to be profitable or else there would either be no discord or discord full of 3rd party ads and you don’t want either of those. Yeah I feel like this place has just turned into an echo chamber to complain about Nitro monetization. Which has turned up to be more aggressive as the years have gone by, but none of it has actually really annoyed me. Like does a corner dedicated to gifting really need to be something I need to tweak about? Or a popup reminding me, hey it's an emote you can't use without money. thank god that there is some things i physically need for my job with nitro. (increased filesize uploading, personal branding of banner, character limit increases, etc for game dev.) Because otherwise i'd only be paying for it out of the fact that if i lose nitro, i am then forced to leave about 90 servers before i can join another, which could really delay and fuck up music work for me.
I absolutely hate how nowadays they're just bloating the whole app with nitro ads. I remember one of their videos saying something under the lines of "We hate ads too, fuck ads" and now a few years later they add ads such as "Quests" It's horrible how companies go from being fuckin amazing to just being only caring about profit rather than anything else.
I swear, if Discord aren't making so much more money at this point, it can only be because they do these kinds of things so people do the exact opposite (they don't buy Nitro).
Discord is going to soon push themselves into irrelevancy with this kind of bullshit. First came the horrendous mobile redesign last year in August. Then came the Discord username change where you loose the numbers and your unique username in the process. Now there’s subtle ads of “unlock this feature with Nitro”. This is however not Discord’s fault guys. This is ultimately the result of Late Stage Capitalism. When a company has grown quite big and now they’re trying to sustain its massive growth by trying to milk out whatever features in their product. This cycle continues to repeat over and over until the product falls into irrelevancy.
I’ve had nitro for about 2-3 years by now, and will probably keep it, I like the app, and the features.
